Hear You Me by Jimmy Eat World

"I never said thank you for that

I thought I might get one more chance."

V. Friends

Edward had never wished to read minds; he never thought of it as a gift really, more of a curse since he had no control over his 'talent'. But watching from the corner of his Abby release silent tears while sitting in the passenger seat truly made him wish that his gift would work on her. She hadn't uttered a single thing other than one simple plea of driving her to the hospital. He was clueless, but more importantly, he was worried and he had no clue how to comfort her.

He didn't finish parking in the slot before she rushed out of her seat and closed the door shut, practically running to the front entrance of the small hospital. Edward went to follow her, taking long strides to keep up with her telling her silently that he'd never leave her - not now, not ever. She barely looked at him, her face still blanched and tears streaked on her perfect cheeks but he still wasn't going anywhere.

"Hey Majorie," Abby barely whispered when she reached the front desk. The older blonde woman passed Abby a pitiful look to the girl and Abby wondered softly, "Where's JD?" Edward quickly scanned the nurse's mind and he could feel himself ease tenfold when he saw his father taking care of the injured man. Abby would have to see for herself to believe it that everything would be fine.

"Right around the corner, 1F sweetheart, go ahead," Majorie smiled at her, mentally telling her that Jason was okay and it was nothing to worry about but Abby didn't notice the look because she took off immediately. Edward passed the nurse an appreciative nod before following her to the room.

While walking to their destination, Edward knew he had to say something to soothe her nerves, "He's fine, Abby. I'm sure of it."

He heard her scoff, "Life is rarely ever so kind, Edward."

The undead man couldn't help but agree with her though he wouldn't voice it. He didn't have to be a telepath to know how much heartache the beautiful brunette carried with her everywhere she went.

The blood didn't bother Edward much anymore though he was in a hospital and it was everywhere. He's been a vampire for far too long to let the faint smell of human blood bother him but he did catch the fresher scent of the ruby red liquid coming from 1F. He also caught the scent of his father's familiar aroma.

Edward watched as an anxious Abby burst open the door and saw her brother sitting on the hospital bed in his deputy uniform with a sling on his arm and gauze placed over the corner of his forehead. His father, Carlisle, stood next to the man sitting on the bed checking over his notes when the duo turned to see Abby and Edward at the door.

"Oh, my god," Abby whimpered. JD's face morphed into a slight panic and surprise when he saw his younger sister's face that was close to breaking into incorrigible sobs. She speed walked across the short space, ignoring everyone else in the room, and engulfed her older brother in her arms.

"Hey," JD mumbled into her hair, wrapping his one good arm around her, "I'm fine," he tried pulling away but she held onto him tightly, "Abby look at me, I'm fine."

She didn't let go of him and he froze when he heard her let out an almost soundless sob against his shoulder, "You can't leave me, too."

Edward knew if he had a beating heart, it'd be breaking for Abigail and it took every single muscle in his body to not comfort her in any way. Thus, he stayed put near his father and watched the scene unfold with concerned eyes. Carlisle and Edward shared a look before the telepath answered Carlisle's unspoken words. He nodded at the inquiry of whether these were the siblings that recently lost their parents in a tragic accident.

JD forcefully pulled her away so that she would see his face and would see that he was fine. He was completely and totally okay. Abby's face was blotched with hot tears, staining her cheeks a disheartening scarlet. Her lips were completely swollen due to her picking at them anxiously with her teeth.

She was crying for awhile, he concluded.

"I'm not going anywhere," JD reassured, holding her upper shoulders tightly to remind her that he was there and alive. "You're stuck with me, doofus. Besides I can't eat Ramen noodles for the rest of my life! That sodium intake will kill me."

Abby released a half sob and laugh combination, an ugly laugh in her opinion, and shakily replied, "That's not funny, Jay."

JD motioned to her whole face with his hand and grinned, saying, "You gotta' a little snot...everywhere."

The girl glared at her brother, knowing it wasn't as bad he was saying, before she started to look around for a tissue to wipe her face with when suddenly a hand brought up a box of Kleenex. She raised her eyes to meet Edward and his gentle smile. Abby had no idea what it was about him and his smiles, but they were too contagious because she always had to match the motion of his lips. Even at a time like this, her lips twitched upwards.

An uncomfortable throat clearing caused Abby and Edward to stop looking at each other. She quickly swiped a tissue from the box before looking at JD's suspicious gaze of Edward. And the telepath had to wipe away a grin from arriving to his face when he heard JD's thought's of 'ah, the Devil'.

"So, Doc," JD started, keeping a firm glare on Edward, "this is one of your boys?"

Carlisle, who knew nothing of JD's thoughts, still had to hold in his laughter when he saw the young deputy's glaring eyes on his adopted son, "Yes, he is, Deputy. His name's Edward."

"Thank you," a softer voice suddenly spoke up before anyone could say anything more and all three males switched their gaze to the short brunette who placed a hand on top of JD's shoulder, "Dr. Cullen, for taking care of him."

The handsome doctor gently smiled at the young girl before saying, "Of course, Abigail. He's going to be just fine - all he needs is a bit of ibuprofen and rest, and he'll be good as new."

She shot him a grateful look while wondering how on earth Edward was adopted. He shared the same eyes as his adoptive father. The doctor was extraordinarily handsome - just like Edward. The man had sleeked back blonde hair, a tall build, and perfect porcelain skin. She couldn't understand the term 'adopted' anymore when it came to the Cullen's.

Something egged her to believe otherwise.

Carlisle quickly understood how this human was his son's mate. Edward looked at her as she if was the only person in this world that would save him from an eternity of damnation. Though, she was only human and even in his 300 some odd years, he'd never truly heard of a human mate lasting with a vampire - if the mate wasn't turned or worst of all, killed. But he'd support any decision his son would choose because it seemed clear as day that Edward was absolutely enamored with her.

"So," Abby started, wiping at her nose once more and turning to JD, "what exactly happened?"

Jason suddenly had a sheepish look to his face and lifted his one okay arm to scratch the back of his head, "I kinda'...fell down the stairs at work, hit my head hard, and sprained my wrist. You know the works."

"Does it bother you that you're the dumbest tool in the shed?" Abby rolled her eyes.

"Hey," JD laughed, pointing to himself with pride, "I'm the most utilized tool there is."

Unbeknownst to either of them, the Cullen's left the room to give them some privacy. The two siblings were too worried about each other to realize what was going on outside of the two of them.

"So you admit: you're a tool?" Abby smirked in victory as he narrowed her eyes at her, not able to come up with a quick retaliation. "Can we go home now?"

JD shook his head at her, and he shrugged while saying, "I didn't know you'd be called. I need to go back to the station and fill out papers to confirm that, ya know, I won't 'sue the company' or whatever."

"You didn't want me to know?" Abby eyebrows furrowed as she looked at her older brother in concern.

He lolled his head back in exasperation and said, "Abby, I'm fine! I promise the only reason I'm in here is because I had a tiny cut on my forehead. You would've seen all this at home anyways and I would've told you the same thing." JD sighed, grasping her shoulder and softly said, "I know how you feel about hospitals. I wouldn't want you here unless it was an actual emergency."

Abby slowly nodded, understanding his points but still was worried about him nonetheless. She asked, "Who drove you here?"

"Charlie," he smiled, "he's picking up some dinner for the two of us from the diner and he'll be back to pick me up to take me to the station."

"No dinner tonight, then?"

JD pinched her cheek before she slapped his hand away and he laughed, "No, Abs, thank you though. Order in if you want, I might have to stay late." She nodded at him again, and gave him a final hug before turning to leave when he suddenly remembered, "Hey," she turned around to look at him, "why was the Devil with you?"

She felt her eyes roll to the back of her head so hard that she was sure that they would pop out of her skull. Abby exclaimed, "He's not the Devil, JD!"

"You sure are quick to defend the Devil, Abs," he sneered at the younger brunette.

"He's nice, JD. Edward drove me here when I got the phone call." She didn't know whether to feel embarrassed or comforted by the fact that Edward practically held her. And almost instantaneously, her cheeks started flushing a furious rouge that JD instantly caught. "He's a friend," she concluded, with a faint smile upon her lips.

He wanted to snap her out of whatever trance she was in and got her attention when he suddenly grumbled, "Judas had friends too, Abby."

She sent him a final glare before hissing out, "Goodbye, JD." She opened the door to his room and sent him a final adieu, "I'll see you at home, idiot."

The second she closed the door, Abby heard snickers to the right of her to see Edward leaning against the wall next to the door. He flashed her an amused look because he heard their entire conversation and said, "I don't think your brother likes me much."

She huffed, "He doesn't like the entire male population much." Edward stood up straight and she looked up at him, even wearing ankle boots with a slight heel she was still considerably shorter than him. Abby suddenly shy staring into his dark golden eyes and asked, "Could you drop me home, please?"

"Of course," he replied without hesitation and motioned her to walk first.

Edward knew the hospital was small, built all in a single floor with a basement for equipment and x-ray rooms, but he wished it was bigger. He wanted to spend as much time with her as possible before having to part with her.

It was killing Edward while sitting silently in the car with her, wishing that he could pick at her thoughts even if it was just a little just so that he could know what she was feeling.

"Tell me what you're thinking," he suddenly spewed out.

Abby, stunned at his words, murmured out a, "I'm sorry," She looked down at her lap and started picking at her finger nails, noticing a lone hangnail that she'd have to take care of when she got home.

"What for?" Edward asked, turning his head to glance at her forlorn expression. For once, in his entire vampire existence, he was driving under the speed limit to possibly slow time.

"I didn't mean to breakdown like -"

"Abby," he instantly cut her off, "I never want you to apologize for something like that, alright?" He saw her nod and he couldn't help but send her a tender look.

They sat in companionable silence for a beat before she quietly spoke up, "I had a similar phone call a few months ago." Edward stayed silent, knowing what she was referring to. "I guess JD was working because he was the first emergency contact, I was the second. And I picked up. It was the most horrific phone call of my life and I think about it every single day." She cleared her throat, willing herself to not shed anymore tears today and continued, "I just - I figured the worst when I picked up today."

"I understand," Edward replied because he did. Living as long as he did, everyone he's loved as family were dead. His vampire family was everything he had left and JD was everything Abby had left.

"I haven't told anyone that," Abby mumbled, mostly to herself. But she knew Edward caught it - the lack of music in the car helped with the words coming out of her mouth.

He parked in front of her lawn, trying not to feel slightly enthusiastic about her sharing something personal with him. Edward replied after she turned in her seat to look at him, "If you can't tell friends, who else can you tell?"

"I guess so," Abby huffed, with a slight smile. "We really are friends, aren't we?"

"No need to sound so upset about it, Abby," Edward full on beamed at her.

He was so contagious. His smile was ridiculously blinding and so full of light that she couldn't physically help but smile back at him equally wide.

"No, no," she shook her head, smile still intact, "I'm happy we are."

She dialed the all too familiar number in her phone because gaining Edward as a friend served as a reminder that she missed her old friends. Edward, along with Charlie's helpful words, made her realize that baby steps to feeling like Abby again were necessary.

And she wanted her parents to know that was trying to get better.

"Abby?" The familiar female voice wondered full of shock.

"Hey," Abby replied, a little nervousness slipping past her voice, "I just ordered a pizza and I know I can't finish it on my own. Help me?" The girl on the other end stayed silent. Abby shut her eyes and continued, "I know we haven't spoken in months. But I'm so, so sorry. I can't do this without you anymore."

"It better be pepperoni."
