Chapter Twenty-Nine: Decisions.

"There's something that I wished to discuss with you," Viola stated sitting down next to Caitlyn's hospital bed, a cup of coffee clutched in her hands as she took in Caitlyn's face. With Laura gone, Viola felt it was her duty to protect Caitlyn; she would do anything that she could to make sure that she was safe.

Caitlyn looked up from her lunch, she chewed on the sandwich that Jay had dropped off to save her from the horrible hospital food before he had to head into work with the promise of coming by to see her later. It was strange having her grandmother hover, she had never known the older woman to be this way but she guessed that her mother's murder would have changed a lot of things. Her stomach turned at the thought of her mother's death, memories from the moment that Edward had taken her life in front of her swam in front of her eyes and Caitlyn felt sick.

"I want you to come to California with me," Viola stated firmly, she was not going to leave Caitlyn in this city and it was not safe for her to be here; she cursed Laura for the mess that she had made before she had left this world. Viola would never speak ill of the dead, she had loved her daughter greatly and part of her understand why she had lied for so long about who Caitlyn's father was. However, Laura had left behind one giant mess that Caitlyn had to live with for the rest of her life; something that she would never be able to shake and Viola wished she could fix that.

"What?" Caitlyn whispered staring at her grandmother, this was certainly not what she had been expecting to come out of her mouth. Caitlyn had not even considered what she was going to do now that this was all over, she hadn't put much thought into what would happen when she got out of the hospital.

"I've been doing a lot of thinking. I've got plenty of room, you would certainly not be intruding. It could be the fresh start that you need," Viola stated leaning back in the hospital chair, she seemed to stare straight past Caitlyn for a moment before she looked her in the eyes. There had been a moment when the news had reached her that Laura had been murdered and Caitlyn was missing that she thought she'd have to bury the last of her family. No parent should ever have to bury their child and yet Viola had been forced to do just that, she had nearly been forced to bury her grandchild as well.

Opening and closing her mouth, Caitlyn did not know how to respond other than the fact that she had not considered if she should leave Chicago after everything that had happened. A small part of her did want to run from all of this, to get on a plane and leave behind the city that had brought her even more pain that she had ever thought possible.

"You don't have to decide right now. But I want you to consider it, what is there here for you but bad memories," Viola asked reaching over and took Caitlyn's hand to give it a squeeze. Viola would do anything to make sure that when she got on the plane to fly home that Caitlyn was in the seat next to her. There would be no peace for Caitlyn here, the past would come back to haunt Caitlyn further; Viola was not going to allow this city to swallow her like it had done Laura.

"I can wait for an answer but you need to think about this, do you truly want to live in the shadow of this for the rest of your life… do you truly wish to be remind of what happened every time you walk down the street," Viola explained trying to persuade her to come to California with her. Viola was happy to play dirty if that was what she needed to do to make this happen, she knew that no one would have Caitlyn's best interests at heart like she would.

Laura had played this game and lost, she had been so close to getting away with it only for that man to send her a letter that had caused her to do something completely stupid. Twenty-Five years all down the drain for nothing, it had all been ruined by one stupid decision that could never be taken back and now her daughter and son-in-law lay in the ground while Caitlyn had been put in hospital.

Viola closed her eyes, she wanted nothing more than to keep Caitlyn safe and she could not do that in this city; she had to get her out of her before the real trouble began. It was only a matter of time before this situation only got worse and Viola feared what that might be.

"Will was saying that he thinks you should be able to get out of here tomorrow," Jay stated taking the seat next to Caitlyn's bed, his back ached and he stretched trying to get the kinks out of his back. It had been a long day and he was glad to be away from his desk even for a little while so that he could spend time with her.

Caitlyn grinned at that news, she was desperate to get out of this bed and do something other than rest; she wanted nothing more than to curl in her own bed and watch some decent television. There wasn't much on the hospital television and the books that Jay had brought her could only entertain her for so long before someone came to poke her with needles.

"I've been thinking," Jay murmured leaning forward, his knees touching the cool metal of the hospital bed and he bounced his knee nervously; his elbows rested on his knee and he clasped his hands together. He had put a lot of thought into all of this, he knew that things would be a little strange after everything that she had been through; he couldn't help but fear that he might scare her off.

"A very dangerous pastime," Caitlyn joked with a smile, her ribs ached a little at the movement and she tried not to let it bother her too much. It was going to take time for her body to fully recover and she had talked a little with Dr. Charles after what she had been through.

"I know," Jay replied shaking his head, he didn't want to get too in his head about what he was about to do; he didn't want to over think something that should come completely natural at this point. They had been sort of dating before all of this, hell he had considered Caitlyn his girlfriend before all of this; they had been happy and he wished to go back to that especially after all the drama in their lives.

"I'd like to take you to dinner," Jay said feeling far more nervous than he should, he almost wanted to hurry out of the room and make up some stupid excuse to get out of the situation. His blue eyes darted towards the door to her hospital room and Jay almost wished one of the nurses would come in and say that they needed to do another test on Caitlyn so he could get out of this. Jay almost jumped out of his skin as she took his hand, he looked at her not sure what emotion was on her face until he saw the small smile that had appeared.

"I'd like that," Caitlyn told him, she squeezed his hand gently wanting to let him know that it was okay; she needed something normal right now especially after the crazy that had tried to take over her life. A small part of her had worried that they might not be able to get back to where they had been before all this had happened.

Caitlyn cursed herself for digging into her father, she wanted no part of him in her life now and she would spend the rest of her life denying that Edward Olinsky was her father. As far as she was concerned, her father had been Richard Jones who had been tragically murdered; she hoped that he would have felt the same way about her even if they hadn't had the chance to speak again after her mother's poorly time reveal.

A grin formed on Jay's face and he kissed her softly, relief filling him as he did so; he had been worried that she might want a clean break after everything that they had been through. The kiss was tender and Caitlyn wanted nothing more than to enjoy it, it felt weird that things had been so awkward between them after everything. Part of all of this didn't feel real, Jay had been shot right before her eyes and Caitlyn had thought he was dead for the entire time that she had been held captive by Edward.

Pulling back from Jay, Caitlyn knew that she should tell him about what her grandmother had said about leaving Chicago; she had to decide sooner or later but for now she just wanted to try. Try to see if she could go back to normal here in Chicago, to continue to build a life here and pursue her relationship with Jay; she wasn't ready to just let Edward win just yet even if she might have to admit defeat later.

Jay sat back in his chair, a grin on his face as he tried to wrap his head around the fact that this could work. He had worried for their relationship and he knew that he would do anything to make sure that she was safe; she deserved better and he was going to make sure that she was okay. Whatever Caitlyn needed to recover from this, he knew that it wasn't all going to be fixed right away but they could work towards being better together.
