The Ultimate Detective woke up in a moving closed room, probably a semi-trailer. She slowly sat up and leaned her back against the wall feeling weak from the substance she and her friend were forced to inhale.
Kyoko couldn't see anything in the darkness. Anything but her smiling persecutor sitting against the wall in front of her.
"Damn it, my pills..." She nervously touched her belly to check if she didn't have any of her meds left in her bulletproof vest, only to find out that it was gone. "Makoto?" Kirigiri barely got up and began blindly searching the wagon for her friend.
"We don't have much time dear." Junko smiled. "It was a nice stay but I think I'll be going, it's not like you're stopping me anyway."
After failing to find her former classmate the detective gave her nothing but her cold stare and sat back down.
"...I didn't always like you, you were a big pain in the ass back at the beginning. I had to erase more of your memories than I did with the others. Unfortunately, I couldn't decrease your intelligence so that went for nothing anyway." She chuckled shortly. "..Always thinking sharp, didn't attend parties, didn't care about boys, duh you didn't even care about anyone except your detective teacher. Just working all the time. It was hard to figure out how to make you despair ya know? I only had your grandpa but he fled from my wholesome hotel shortly after we recorded your motive. Doesn't seem like he's showing up anytime soon. Sooo fuckin' lame right?.. Or it would be if not a certain someone even more important to you. Every cloud has a silver lining after all." Enoshima smiled mischievously.
"You didn't see my thoughts on Makoto, your assumptions are unfounded." Kyoko spoke while her facial expression didn't change a bit.
"Oh don't worry darling, it's perfectly fine to have a lover! Even I had one but, you can guess what happened to him.. Anyways! This is probably the last moment you can ask me for relationship advice so if I were you I would go for it! Last chance!" She cheered.
"I would sooner ask Miu." Kirigiri said barely above a whisper as she put her hand on her forehead tired of her persecutor.
"Did you meet her already? Or should I say, get to know her again." Junko smirked.
"We already had three incidents with her in just two weeks. You can see my memories so you know the answer to your question." Kyoko replied calmly.
"I know! I just wanted to make you chat a little." She told playfully.
"I thought you can talk seriously for more than a few seconds." Kirigiri said in disappointment.
"Ugh, why can't you just cheer up? Life's so hopelessly beautiful with despair!" Enoshima shouted with her tongue out and her hands forming the sign of horns.
She sighed in annoyance. "Nevermind. Don't talk at all just, shut up already."
"Huh. Not in the mood, like always right? Don't even wanna keep on investigating my backstory or somethin'?" Junko proposed.
"No, you won. I give up. My theories just, don't add up." Kyoko stated.
"Nice bluff there girl. I still feel sorry for you though. I mean, all of those sleepless nights at HPA's archive. Ya'know what? I'll give you a hint!.. Or no! Two hints! You ready?" She questioned with enthusiasm.
"Why would I believe anything you say?" Kirigiri asked without showing any interest.
"Cause I'm fucking dead? Besides, I want you to discover the truth eventually. You're so desperate for it after all Mrs. Detective." Enoshima giggled.
"I'm not addicted anymore." Kyoko told.
"So you're not interested in my clues? Really want to abandon your only chance?" She questioned teasingly.
Kirigiri sighed. "Why don't you just say it already? It's not like you need my permission."
"Knew you are still into it! Alright, hint number one iiis.. I'm not actually a genius, I'm just good at using other people! The best part is that I am not even trying, my charm does all the work, ya know?" Junko crossed her hands under her bust.
"...Go on." She commanded.
"Hint number two is, my chest size! Ninety centimeters!.. Oh come on, I didn't say it to make you jealous, it's a real clue. Word of honor!" Enoshima winked. "It's showtime!" She cheered as the truck stopped and a soldier walked in.
Hope's Peak Academy
Six months after the first worldwide streamed killing game - 12:30 am
Makoto entered the no longer active school and followed traces of wet boots.
"What the hell is she doing here?" He thought as he entered the storage room located on the first floor.
Naegi turned on the lights and opened his eyes widely when he saw the trail going downstairs. "This floor can move?! How many secrets does this school have?"
Makoto went down and walked into a dark room. "Kiri?" His voice echoed.
Kyoko exhaled in relief and hid her pistol. "You almost scared me." She said in a tired voice and sat back down on her metal chair.
"What is this room? W-why are you in here so late?" Naegi headed over to her table on which there were many folders, documents, pictures, and a camping lamp.
"It's a secret archive of HPA and I'm investigating Junko Enoshima's past. My turn for questions: Why are you awake and how did you find me?" Kirigiri asked.
"W-what do you mean your turn? It doesn't matter how I-"
"I answered your questions out of hand and I expect you to do the same with mine." Kyoko interrupted while browsing a folder.
"..Sure. I couldn't fall asleep because of the storm so I visited my kitchen to grab a glass of water, that's when I noticed that your car is missing. Then I guessed where you drove and followed your wet trail. He replied.
"I see." Kirigiri put the documents away and glanced at her friend. "I don't want to be mean but you should head back to your place and get some sleep."
"Look who's talking! How many times did you stay here?" Makoto questioned.
"I really don't have time for interviews." She opened another folder.
"Kiri I'm serious. You can't mess with your sleep schedule like this and then rely on coffee." Naegi stated.
"We're Ultimates, it's expected from us to bend our limits." Kyoko argued.
"Fine, I'm not leaving without you." He grabbed one of the metal chairs lying against the wall and unfolded it next to his former classmate.
"There's no point in what you're doing. You won't convince me to leave, you'll just lose sleep." Kirigiri frowned.
"You won't change my mind either, so if I'm staying anyway maybe you could use my help." Makoto smiled.
"Well, it would be a waste if you just sat here." She smirked at his happy attitude. "As you noticed the lights here don't work. I suspect that it may be a problem with circuit breakers and I would check it myself but I don't have time to search for the right electric panel."
"Alright, I'll go take a look." Naegi got up.
"Take this." Kyoko gave him a flashlight. "In case the lights wouldn't work elsewhere as well."
"Thanks, and good luck with the research." He exited the underground room in search of fuse boxes.
After what felt like three quarters, Makoto returned to the secret archive which had its lights on. "Whoa, it worked!.." He cheered but then noticed dozens of steel regals with thousands of documents and sealed plastic boxes which made him stare in shock.
"They wanted to upload all the data to the school servers, but before Chihiro could finish his job.. you know what happened..." Kirigiri looked down in silence after remembering her dead classmate.
"When the internet will be restored his programs will continue to serve millions of people." Naegi sat down on his chair. "..I know this is silly but, his alter ego makes me believe that he's still with us."
"I wish I could believe it too." She almost completely closed her eyes but reopened them when she felt her friend's hand on top of hers.
"Is everything alright?" Makoto looked at his friend.
"Yes, don't worry. I'm just tired of reading that's all.." Kyoko rubbed her eyelid.
"I can't tell if she's lying, even when I look directly in her eyes..." He thought and moved his hand away just when his former classmate was about to grab it back. "So, do you want to tell me why you choose to work here at night?"
"We are the only people alive that know about this room and I want it to stay this way for now. Securing this archive would take Future Foundation months and they're not even done with half of the school. I can't let them prevent me from investigating." Kirigiri stated.
"But why do you need to do this now? Junko is dead, her secrets won't escape you." Naegi told.
"We can't predict the future since the world is in total chaos, I prefer to do it as fast as possible." She replied while analyzing another picture of another class.
"Still I think that you should try asking them for help, it'll take forever for you to go through all of the docs." Makoto assumed.
"Not a good idea. Trust me, I can handle it myself." Kyoko got up with the picture and walked past Makoto.
"Kiri you can't overwork yourse- oh, my.." Naegi dropped his jaw open when he saw a few meters of the wall covered with documents, photos, and pins connected with rubber bands.
"I've been working on this for a while now." Kirigiri pinned the picture.
"That explains your addiction to coffee." He walked up next to her.
"..How did you fix the lights?" Kyoko asked wanting to change the topic.
"Huh? Oh the lights um, the electric panel controlling this part of the school is damaged, looks like someone hit it. Luckily the circuit breakers weren't completely broken so I managed to switch them on." Makoto explained.
"Thank you, it'll make my work easier." Kirigiri turned around and walked towards her seat but stopped after hearing her friend.
"Kiri no, let's get back to our apartments. We'll talk this over tomorrow." Naegi suggested.
"I somehow cannot focus when he's here anyway.." She said in her mind and turned back to him. "As you wish."
"But Ki- oh, oh really you just, agreed?" Makoto questioned in astonishment.
"That's right, shall we go?" Kyoko asked and took her violet bag from under the table.
"Y-yeah, of course." He replied while his face shined up with a smile.
Suddenly his eyesight went pitch black...
"..."
"..."
"..."
"Oh right sorry, disconnecting you right now." An unknown male voice sounded.
Makoto regained his vision and saw a middle-aged man with neck-length black hair who was wearing a lab coat and a pair of glasses. He took a helmet connected by many cables off Naegi's head. "Memory rewind successful, work like a charm right?" The stranger placed the device on a nearby high table and headed over to a big machine that seemed to be a computer to type something very quickly.
"Where, am I..." Makoto began looking around with his dizzy head. He realized that he was in a huge hall with many complex devices and cables everywhere, even on the ceiling.
"Over here!" Junko's voice sounded from a TV hung over Kyoko's seat. "Yeah here baby, time to take over this body!"
"-KIRI NO!" Naegi jumped out of his chair to run to his friend and take her helmet off.
