I is for Ice Cream
It was hot enough that the pavement was sticky beneath their tires and the air strained to carry the aircrafts' weight. The heat dome that had been building over the National Park was stifling and the residence of Piston Peak Air Attack Base had no access to air conditioning to they did their best to shelter in the shade of the main hangar. The building had all of its doors thrown open in an attempt to catch a whisper of a cooling breeze. That breeze always seemed to remain elusive, leaving the various vehicles to mope with their misery.
"That it!" It was Cabbie that was finally the one who snapped. Rousing from his stooper he started rolling slowly towards the main door. "Blackout, go grab the cooler." He called over his wing.
"Do you mean?" Dipper perked up from her position in front of the biggest box fan she could find.
"Yes." The old plane replied. He didn't need to say any more everyone in the hangar started to perk up. "So, I am grabbing the regular or something special?"
"THE REGULAR!" If other vehicles spoke their voices were completely drowned out by a very enthusiastic Avalanche.
"Alright." Cabbie sighed, the winced slightly as he rolled into the harsh summer sun. He blinked to allow his eyes to adjust to the intense light and then allowed them to sweep across the wide expanse of baking tarmac. "Alright." He said more to himself than to vehicles behind him as he tentatively rolled out onto the blacktop and started to feel heat soaking into his tires and reflecting up onto his belly. "Let's get moving Blackout…the sooner we take off the sooner we will be at 10,000 feet."
The old plane once again didn't need to spell out the rest. The air would be so much cooler that far above the earth's surface giving Cabbie and his shopping assistant a welcome rest bit from the sweltering air at ground level. The C-119 knew that everyone on base was probably going to be jealous of their momentary escape from the heat…but he also knew that jealous would dissolve the moment that Cabbie's tires once again kissed the tarmac at Piston Peak Air Attack Base as he returned carrying the fruits of his emergency ice cream run.
End Note: Well, that was fun to write, because I of course chose to write it when it was snowing outside. But that brings us to the question of the day...what is your prompt suggestions for the letter J?
