Chapter 6

Within the next hour, L'Oiseau Rare filled up with patrons eager to see Lucille and Francœur perform, to which Carlotta greeted guests at the door and seated them at their tables while Madeleine served drinks and cigars (if desired).

As the show began, the young blonde watched as her cousin and singing partner took to the stage and began to sing their most popular song: La Seine. Hearing them finally sing together and seeing them perform, Madeleine was completely awestruck. Of course, she already knew Lucille had a lovely voice and had heard her sing many times before; but her voice paired with Francœur's was pure magic. And his skill with the guitar was absolutely astounding!

But his voice.. Madeleine was at a loss for words at how beautiful and gentle it was. Truly, it was the most enchanting sound she'd ever heard. She felt herself becoming lost in his harmonics and emitted a sigh as their music transported her mind to a different realm.

When the song came to an end, she and the entire cabaret erupted into applause before she was immediately brought back to reality:

"Excuse me Mademoiselle, but I require another glass of brandy. Would you be a dear and mind fetching it for me," an aristocratic gentleman asked in a neutral tone, to which she donned a polite smile.

"Of course Monsieur," she answered with a slight bow of her head as she headed over to the bar and retrieved his drink.

Upon returning to the table, she presented the glass of brandy to the patron who in turn, paid for his drink and leisurely sat back in his chair.

"Is there anything else I can get for you Monsieur?"

"Not at the moment, but I may require your personal services later," he shamelessly winked, to which she suppressed the urge to slap him across the face.

With a small scoff at his innuendo, Madeleine turned on her heel and walked away; however, she could still feel the man's eyes on her as she headed across the room to check on some of the other guests.

'Don't let him get to you Madeleine,' she mentally told herself as she approached a table with an elderly couple sitting together. "Good evening Madame, Monsieur, is everything to your liking?"

"Everything is just splendid, thank you," the man kindly stated as she refilled their champagne glasses.

"Of course. Now, if you need anything else please let me know," she politely bowed her head and headed off to wait on another group of guests while the band played some relaxing instrumental music to pass the time until the next performance.
