(Friday, 2:00PM; State Fair; Monika's PoV)
Aki and I wave to the father and walk away.
Aki: "Wow, that made me feel good."
Monika: "It sure did."
I hear some screaming, and I turn my head in that direction. I notice that the screams are coming from the roller coaster. Maybe Aki and I can go!
Monika: "Hey, wanna go on that roller coaster?"
Aki: "Hell yeah!"
Aki and I go to the roller coaster and stand in line. Soon enough, it's our turn. We get into our seats, and the ride starts. As the ride accelerates, I throw my hands up in the air in joy, and I join the other people and scream in joy. When the ride finishes and the safety bar rises, I turn towards Aki-
Monika: "AKI?!"
I see Aki's limp body. I shake him around violently in an attempt to make him wake up.
Monika: "AKI! SAY SOMETHING!"
He still doesn't respond. I feel the stares around me, looking at me trying to help Aki.
Monika: "SOMEONE CALL AN AMBULANCE!"
I hear someone pulling their phone out and making a call.
?: "Hello? I'm at the state fair and someone has fainted! Please call an ambulance!"
I turn to see who called the ambulance, and it was none other than the father we gave the fries to earlier. He then approaches me and helps me take Aki out of the roller coaster cart.
Father: "Here, I'll carry him to the entrance, the ambulance will come soon."
Monika: "T-thank y-you…"
I manage to thank the man through my tears. We soon arrive at the front of the state fair, and the ambulance comes a few minutes after. The paramedics come out with a stretcher, and one of them takes Aki from the father and puts him on the stretcher.
The paramedic then signals me to get in the back, and I do so. The ambulance driver then speeds to the hospital. Once we arrive, the paramedics open the back door and take Aki to the hospital. I follow them to the hospital and to a room until I'm stopped. One of the doctors tells me to stay on the bench, and I do so.
Millions of thoughts are rushing through my mind, and it doesn't help that I'm crying a lot too. Should I call someone to be here? They would help me a lot… but I don't want to worry anyone…
I subconsciously pull out my phone and dial Sayori. Wait, what am I doing?! The last person I want to tell is Sayori! She's already been through a lot, I don't want to add this on! What do I do-
Sayori: "Hello?"
Dammit, she picked up.
Monika: "H-hey Sayori…"
Sayori: "Monika? Are you alright?"
Monika: "O-of course I am! W-why wouldn't I be?"
Sayori: "You sound like you were… crying."
Monika: "N-no I wasn't!"
Sayori: "Where are you right now?"
Monika: "I'm at-"
Doctor: "Excuse me, are you the one that brought Akihito Yamada?"
Sayori: "Wait… was that a doctor?"
Monika: "I-I'll call you back."
I quickly cut the call before turning my attention to the doctor.
Monika: "Y-yes sir…"
Doctor: "Is… his parents here?"
Monika: "N-no… it's just me…"
Doctor: "I see… could you maybe call his parents here?"
Monika: "Okay…"
I pull out my phone and dial Aki's mother. She picks up the phone almost immediately.
Akira: "Hey, Monika! Any reason why you called?"
Monika: "A-Aki…"
Akira: "Is everything okay? What about Aki?"
Monika: "H-he's… in the…"
Akira: "Aki's in the…"
Monika: "H-hospital…"
Akira: "What?!"
Monika: "T-they said they needed to talk to his parents now…"
Akira: "Do this. Find the doctor and give the phone."
Monika: "O-okay…"
I look around and find the doctor who spoke to me earlier.
Monika: "E-excuse me?"
Doctor: "Ah, hello there."
Monika: "Akihito's mother is on the phone… she wants to talk with you…"
Doctor: "Okay, I can speak over the phone. Please wait at the bench over there, I'll return your phone shortly."
I hand my phone to the doctor and go to the bench. The doctor goes into the room they took Aki in, most likely so that Aki can talk with his mom. I bury my face in my hands, only to feel a tap on my shoulder. I look up to see…
Monika: "S-Sayori?"
Sayori: "Hey…"
I move over to let Sayori sit on the bench.
Monika: "W-what are you doing here?"
Sayori: "I heard the doctor… and Aki's mom texted me telling me to come here."
Monika: "O-oh…"
Sayori: "Let me guess, Aki had more chest pain?"
Monika: "Y-yeah…"
Sayori: "You mind talking about it with me? It'll help calm you down."
Monika: "W-we went to the state fair today… and we had a lot of fun… he even got me a stuffed animal…"
Sayori: "I can see that, ehehe… you're squeezing the life out of it right now."
I only now notice that I've had the stuffed animal the whole time.
Monika: "Oh… I guess so…"
Sayori: "So… what did you guys do at the state fair?"
Monika: "Well… we played carnival games for a bit… then we went on the ferris wheel… and then a roller coaster…"
Sayori: "Hey, a roller coaster sounds fun!"
Monika: "Not when your lover fainted on it…"
Sayori: "W-wait… Aki… fainted on the coaster?"
Monika: "Y-yeah… and I didn't even notice until the end…"
My crying slowly gets more intense as the scene plays through my head again.
Monika: "It's all my fault! I should've paid more attention to him! And now he's in the hospital because of me…"
Sayori holds me in a hug in an attempt to calm me down.
Sayori: "Shh… it's not your fault… it's gonna be okay…"
As Sayori attempts to calm me down, the doctor comes back.
Doctor: "Here is your phone, ma'am."
I take the phone from the doctor and put it in my pocket.
Monika: "Is… is Akihito okay?"
Doctor: "He's… asleep right now. The chest pain seems to have knocked him out."
Monika: "Will I be able to see him later?"
Doctor: "We'll… we'll see. I have to return now."
The doctor quickly leaves me and Sayori at the bench.
Monika: "So… what do we do now?"
Sayori: "Aki's mom is coming tomorrow. I don't think they'll let us see Aki today, so we'll have to leave."
Monika: "Oh…"
We both wait in the hospital for the rest of the day, hoping that we'd get the chance to see Aki once. A person, who seems to be a receptionist, comes up to both of us.
Receptionist: "Excuse me? Visiting hours are over, so we're going to have to ask you to leave."
Monika: "B-but he's still in there!"
Receptionist: "Your friend will be fine, he's in good hands. You guys can come tomorrow and check up on him."
Monika: "Okay…"
Sayori and I then get up from the bench and head out of the hospital. I begin to walk home before Sayori stops me.
Sayori: "How about you come over and stay with me and Natsuki for the night? That way we can come here tomorrow."
Monika: "Okay…"
We both get up and head to Sayori's house. Once we arrive, I see Natsuki sitting on the couch, watching TV.
Natsuki: "Hey Sayori. Everything alright?"
Sayori: "The doctors said Aki's asleep right now, and we'll have to see him tomorrow. I brought Monika with me for the night, so that she has some company."
Natsuki: "Wait, Monika's here?"
Natsuki turns her attention from the TV to me and Sayori.
Monika: "H-hey…"
Natsuki: "Lemme guess, you brought Aki to the hospital?"
I simply nod my head.
Natsuki: "You mind telling us the story?"
I sit down on the couch with Natsuki and Sayori and tell them everything we did. As I'm telling the story, tears are streaming down my eyes. Sayori and Natsuki do their best to calm me down and keep me from having a breakdown. After I finish, I hang my head low.
Natsuki: "Wow… I… I don't know what to say…"
Sayori: "It's gonna be okay. Aki's safe in the hospital. All we can do now is just wait."
Suddenly, Sayori's phone rings. She picks it up, and after seeing the caller, she heads out of the living room to talk privately. After a few minutes, she comes back to the living room.
Natsuki: "Who was it?"
Sayori: "Aki's mom. She's coming in the morning. I told her that we're staying here and that we all can go when she arrives."
Natsuki: "Okay. She's going to be coming here as soon as she arrives?"
Sayori: "Yep. We should head to sleep, she could come at any time so we have to be ready. Monika, you take my bed, I'll sleep on the couch."
Monika: "N-no… I'll take the couch."
Natsuki: "Are you sure? You can even take my bed if you want. I don't mind being on the couch for one night."
Monika: "Yeah, I'll be fine."
Sayori: "Okay then… you can wake me up if you need anything, okay?"
I give Sayori a thumbs up as she and Natsuki get up from the couch and head to their rooms. I lay down on the couch and attempt to sleep. A few minutes later, Sayori comes back to the living room with some stuff.
Sayori: "Forgot to give you a pillow and blanket, ehehe."
Monika: "Thanks, Sayori."
Sayori: "No problem. Good night!"
Monika: "Good night."
Sayori heads back up, and I try to sleep again. After many attempts, I can't fall asleep. Today's events keep running in my head. I rise from the couch and check my phone for the time. Huh, one in the morning. I guess I've been trying to sleep for three hours. I hear footsteps coming down the steps, so I quickly lay back down and act like I'm sleeping.
Natsuki: "Heh, you can cut the act now, Monika. I know you can't sleep."
Monika: "How did you know?"
Natsuki: "Oh please, I could hear you shuffling from a mile away. If you're gonna cover up something, you gotta at least do it right."
Monika: "Oh… ahaha… I guess I do need to get better. What are you doing down here?"
Natsuki: "I'm on the same ship as you."
Monika: "You can't sleep either?"
Natsuki: "Nope, not a single minute of sleep since I hit the bed. I came down to get some water, hopefully, that'll help."
Monika: "I see… any reason why you can't sleep?"
Natsuki: "Oh, it's nothing. It's just that a friend of mine is in the hospital."
Monika: "Why would that affect you? You always act like you don't like Aki."
Natsuki: "Just because I tease him doesn't mean I don't like him, Monika. I still care about him, although not as much as you or Sayori. Without him, who else could I make fun of?"
Natsuki's attempt to lighten the mood works, as I'm smiling from her joke.
Monika: "Ahaha, I suppose so."
Natsuki: "Well, I'm heading back now. I know this sounds like bad advice, but don't think about Aki too much. He's in good hands, so you can take your mind off of him for some time. Constantly thinking about him will just not let you sleep anymore."
Monika: "Alright…"
Natsuki then heads back upstairs to her room. I think about what Natsuki said, and try to keep my mind off Aki. After taking her advice, I manage to sleep fairly quickly.
(Saturday, 9:00AM; Sayori's House; Monika's PoV)
I wake up to the sound of something sizzling in the kitchen. It smells like… bacon? I rise from the couch and sleepily walk over to the kitchen to see what's happening. Upon arriving, I see that Natsuki is making some eggs and bacon for breakfast.
Natsuki: "Morning, Monika."
Monika: "Good morning. Where's Sayori?"
Natsuki: "Brushing her teeth. She woke up to the smell of food, and almost ate everything there. I told her to back off and brush her teeth first."
Monika: "Ahaha, okay. What're you making?"
Natsuki: "Eggs and bacon. I'll get the toast later for you."
Monika: "Thank you so much."
Just then, Sayori comes into the kitchen.
Sayori: "Ok, I brushed my teeth. Now can I eat?"
Natsuki: "Sure. Take whatever you need, but leave some for the rest of us!"
Sayori: "I will!"
Sayori takes a few pieces of bacon and an egg and then heads to the dining table.
Monika: "Hey, Sayori?"
Sayori: "Hm?"
Sayori looks at me with her mouth stuffed with eggs.
Monika: "Do you have an extra brush I can use?"
Sayori quickly chews her food and swallows before answering.
Sayori: "Yeah, follow me."
I follow Sayori to one of the restrooms, where she hands me a new toothbrush for me to use.
Sayori: "Here's your toothbrush. You can just use this restroom and the toothpaste over there."
Monika: "Alright, thank you."
Sayori then leaves me in the restroom. I brush my teeth and head back downstairs to the dining room where everyone else is. I see that there is a plate with some eggs and two pieces of toast, so I sit at that chair, and begin eating. After we finish our breakfast, Sayori takes the plates to the kitchen and puts them in the sink. We all then head to the living room to relax for a bit while we wait for Aki's mother to arrive.
After a few minutes, there's a ring on the doorbell. Sayori quickly gets up from the couch and goes to open the door. She then comes back into the living room… with no one behind her?
Sayori: "Alright, let's go. Aki's mom is waiting outside in her car."
We all follow Sayori out the door, and to Aki's mom's car. Once we all get in, she drives straight to the hospital. Once we arrive, we go up to the front desk to find Aki's room. They tell us the direction to go in, but before we enter, we're stopped by one of the doctors.
Doctor: "Woah there, you can't just barge in. Who are you guys?"
Akira: "I'm Akira Yamada, mother of Akihito Yamada, who is a patient here. These two are his friends."
Doctor: "Oh, I see. Please follow me into Akihito's room for a minute."
We all follow the doctor into Aki's room. Once I arrive, I see Aki laying down in a bed… but something's off. There are no machines connected to him. Akira immediately rushes over to Aki and shakes him around a bit in an attempt to wake him up. But he never woke up.
Akira: "Is… is he still unconscious?"
Doctor: "We're sorry to inform you that…"
No… please don't say what I think he's going to say… please…
Doctor: "Akihito… passed away last night."
We all stare at the doctor in shock.
Akira: "No… NO!"
Akira immediately starts bawling her eyes out. The three of us begin to cry as well.
Akira: "You can't be serious! He was so healthy!"
Doctor: "That's what we thought too… but his heart disease got out of control, resulting in him dying of a heart attack."
Heart disease…?
Monika: "W-what is this h-heart disease?"
Doctor: "Coronary artery disease. In short term, a buildup of plaque in the blood vessels, resulting in less blood flow. The blockage of blood flow resulted in the heart attack."
I look over at Sayori and Natsuki, who only stare back at me, with apologetic looks on their faces, only meaning one thing…
Doctor: "I'll leave you all alone for a bit."
The doctor then leaves the room, leaving us four and Aki's body.
Sayori: "Monika… I'm so sorry-"
Monika: "Y-you knew about this?!"
Sayori: "Y-yes… but-"
Monika: "How could you not tell me?!"
Sayori: "Aki told us to!"
Monika: "So?!"
Natsuki: "Monika, he didn't want you to worry… so he told us to keep it from you…"
He… didn't want me to worry?
Monika: "S-so that's why he told me he should stay away from fatty foods…"
Sayori: "W-what?"
Monika: "H-he only told me that the doctor told him to stay away from fatty foods… he never told me anything about the heart disease…"
I take another look at Aki, who's being held tightly by Akira. I can't imagine what she's going through… her own son dying…
Monika: "I'm… I'm gonna go home."
Sayori: "Want me to… walk you home?"
Monika: "No. I can go myself."
Without another word, I leave the hospital room, and then the hospital. I head straight towards my house, with only one thing on my mind.
Aki. Akihito. Akihito Yamada. My lover. My boyfriend. The love of my life. Gone. Dead. No more. In a better place.
Once I arrive home, I head straight to my bedroom. I lay down on my bed, and cry myself to sleep.
(Saturday, 1:00AM; House; Monika's PoV)
It's been a few hours since I woke up. I haven't eaten anything today, but that's the least of my concerns. I decide to take a walk outside, maybe that'll clear my head. Maybe it'll be my last walk for a while. I take my coat and head outside. I start walking in a random direction, with no knowledge of where I'm going or my destination. It won't matter soon.
I continue walking for a while when I spot a tall building. Luckily, there are some stairs on the side of it. Maybe I can take a nice view. Maybe more. I climb to the top of the building and take a seat on the rooftop. I look out in the distance and see a nice view of the city. I look up at the stars. Aki is probably up there right now, all alone. Don't worry Aki, you won't be alone soon.
I stand up, walk over to the safety railing, and look over the edge. Wow, it seems like a high building. Good thing I don't have a fear of heights. I lean over the railing, taking another look at the city. I then take a few steps backward and pause.
Thoughts of Aki rush back into my head. All the memories we spent together. Hopefully, we'll make more. I sprint towards the railing, ignoring my brain telling me to stop. This must be done. This is the only escape from everything. I'm coming, Aki. I jump over the railing and begin my trip down. Thoughts of Aki come back, flooding my brain. The first day we met, the day he came to the club, the day he confessed, the day we kissed, and then… the day he died. Aki, if you're looking at me from above… don't be afraid. I'm doing this for you. I'll see you soon-
(Saturday, 1:30AM; Outdoors; Third Person PoV)
Silence. No sounds of human life can be heard. Silence. Her body lay there, lifeless. A couple walking in the area sees her and calls an ambulance. They try to see if Monika is still alive, but it's no use. The ambulance shortly arrives, and she's rushed to the emergency room. The other club members receive word and rush to the hospital as well.
Doctors and nurses try to save Monika, but it's no use. The doctor approaches the club members, each of them with tears filling their eyes. Each of them hoping for good news. The doctor tells them what happened, and everyone's shocked. After what seems like an eternity of silence, Natsuki speaks up.
Natsuki: "Is she ok? Will she survive?"
Doctor: "We're sorry, we did everything we could, but the chances of succeeding were slim to none."
The three club members break into tears after hearing the news. They lost two of their friends in the span of two days.
Yuri: "W-what are we going to tell Aki?"
That's right, Yuri was never informed of her friend's demise.
Sayori: "W-we won't…"
Yuri: "W-what?!"
Sayori: "The whole reason Monika committed suicide was that… Aki died yesterday…"
Yuri: "H-he did?!"
Natsuki: "We three were there with his mom… and the doctor told us the news…"
Yuri: "No…"
He was the one who helped Yuri out of her dangerous addiction, and now he's died. The three went to their homes, devastated at the news.
A few days later, Natsuki arose from her sleep. She got out of bed and brushed her teeth as usual. She went downstairs to cook some breakfast since she usually woke up later than Sayori.
Natsuki: "Huh, Sayori should've been down here by now. Is she still sleeping?"
She heads upstairs to Sayori's room. She knocks on the door a few times, hoping to get an answer, but to no avail.
Natsuki: "Sayori? You still sleeping?"
Still no answer. She has no choice but to enter Sayori's room herself. She opens the door and-
Natsuki: "SAYORI?!"
There she sees Sayori, hanging from the ceiling. Out of panic, Natsuki desperately calls an ambulance. After describing the situation, she hangs up and tries to call Yuri. After many attempts, she's left with no answer. She hears the sounds of sirens and quickly rushes downstairs to open the door. The paramedics rush inside and follow Natsuki to Sayori's room. They quickly take Sayori out of the noose and carry her into the ambulance. Instead of going to the hospital with her, she goes straight to Yuri's house. Upon arriving, she bangs on the door, hoping to get an answer.
Natsuki: "Goddammit, YURI! OPEN THE FUCKING DOOR!"
No answer. Natsuki tries to break down the door, but she fails to do so due to a lack of strength. She goes around the perimeter, hoping to find another opening. She finds a window, and she knows what has to be done. Looking around, she finds a stone and throws it at the window, shattering the glass into millions of pieces. She then climbs through the broken window, careful as to not cut herself. She successfully gets in, with only a small cut on her arm. Shaking it off, she runs through Yuri's house, trying to find her. Eventually, she finds a closed room and knocks harshly once again. With no response back, she barges into the room-
Natsuki: "YURI!"
There she sees Yuri, laying on the ground, a pool of blood around her. She quickly pulls out her phone and calls an ambulance once again. After trying to convince the phone operator that it's not a prank call, the operator reluctantly sends another ambulance to Yuri's place. After cutting the call, Natsuki examines Yuri. It looks like she cut herself too much that she bled out. Natsuki hears sirens outside, and she unlocks the door. She leads another batch of paramedics to Yuri, who picks her up and takes her to the ambulance. This time, Natsuki gets in the ambulance and heads to the hospital.
Once they arrive, the paramedics take Yuri inside. Natsuki heads to the front desk, and explains her situation, saying that she brought in another person, that being Sayori, and wants to know her condition. The receptionist says that she doesn't know anything and that she'd have to ask the doctor. The receptionist gives Natsuki Sayori's room number, and she immediately rushes over there. She sees a doctor in front of Sayori's room and approaches him.
Natsuki: "Excuse me? Is Sayori alright?"
Doctor: "You're the one who brought her?"
Natsuki: "Yes sir, I also brought another person with me."
Suddenly, a nurse approaches both of them.
Nurse: "Would that be Yuri?"
Natsuki: "Y-yes! Are they okay?"
The doctor and nurse look at each other with rather sorrowful looks, indicating only one thing.
Natsuki: "No…"
Doctor: "We're sorry, but they both didn't survive. They were dead when they were first brought here."
Natsuki: "No! That can't be true!"
Doctor: "Reports say that they both committed suicide late in the night. Bringing them here now wouldn't have helped."
'They… killed themselves in the night?' Natsuki thought to herself. 'So… there was nothing I could've done…'
Natsuki leaves the hospital and heads home, crying along the way. The fact that all her friends killed themselves because another friend died is just shocking to her. But Natsuki wouldn't go down that same path. She'd live and keep the four of her friends in memory.
(One Year Later; Natsuki's PoV)
The bell rings, indicating the end of the day. I start to make my way home, knowing that the literature club would never meet again. Not only because the other four would have graduated, but because they all died. Just as I'm about to go home, I'm stopped by someone. Someone I don't know.
?: "Hey, you're Natsuki, right?"
Natsuki: "Y-yeah… why?"
?: "I heard that you were in a literature club, is that still open?"
Natsuki: "N-no… sadly…"
?: "Oh, that's too bad. How come it ended?"
Not wanting to reveal the truth, I decide to tell him what would've happened if they didn't die a year ago.
Natsuki: "The other members graduated, so we couldn't hold the club."
?: "Aw, that sucks. Well, thanks Natsuki!"
Natsuki: "Yeah, no problem."
He walks off towards his house, and I head towards mine. Sorry man… sorry that the literature club is no more. If it was still there, I would've gladly asked you to join. But it's not… the literature club is…
The literature club is truly a place where no happiness can be found.
Author's Notes: Hey everyone, AnotherAnonymooseWriter here. As of this chapter, this story is complete. To be open with you guys, I had this ending planned even before I wrote this FanFic. It's also why I named it "Two Broken Hearts", since the ending represents Aki's heart disease, and Monika's emotionally broken heart. I'm going through the whole story again, and fixing many grammatical and similar errors I made, so that new readers won't have to suffer with my poor writing.
Side note, if you are interested in making this FanFic into a DDLC mod, please reach out to me! It's been my dream to see this become a mod, and I would love to join your dev team as a writer.
That's all I wanted to say. I apologize for the ending, but I still wanted to go with it. If I ever write more FanFics, I'll make sure to have happier endings. But for now, goodbye.
