After the blackness of the night, the sun finally rose.

Hiccup watched as the yellow shining sun started rising from the ground. It filled the sky with mellow blues and pinks. The Viking teen couldn't help but be mesmerized as the shades blurred together in a silver mist to create a gorgeous scene.

When he saw that his human companion was awake, Toothless crooned softly and nudged Hiccup with his snout.

He did not know where they were, and yet Hiccup felt a small sense of hope, a new beginning. Another chance to live.

Toothless rumbled again and if the growling he heard emitting from the Night Fury's stomach, which was soon echoed by a rumble from his own, was any indication, their first task of the day would be to get some food.

Hiccup sat up and reached for the basket that he had brought with him. He had packed a small supply of rations for the two of them. Of course, they wouldn't last forever, but for the moment they would provide staying power.

"Alright, just in case we don't find anything today, we're only going to eat half of this so we have something to eat later," Hiccup said as he handed a fish to Toothless. "Sound good to you, Bud?"

Toothless looked a bit indignant but lowered in shoulders in resignation before devouring his food.

After Hiccup tended the dying embers of last night's fire, he held a fish for himself over the fire on a stick, his stomach aching as the smell of the roasting fish filled his nostrils.

He hoped he and Toothless would be able to find something suitable to eat out here. But what would they do for shelter? Hiccup had tossed and turned all through the night before. Even with his dragon, the boy still felt the chill of the air. And winter would soon be upon them. When that time came, even Toothless might fall prey to the cold.

As soon as the fish was cooked through, Hiccup pulled it back from the fire and sank his teeth into the crispy flesh.

Toothless had already finished his own portion and was looking around the landscape before them, partially trying to distract himself from the scent of fish.

When Hiccup had finished his food, he wrapped the pelt he had brought with him around his shoulders and patted Toothless's side.

"Right then," he said, forcing himself to smile. "What do you say we look around a bit, Bud? See if this is a good spot to call home."

Toothless grunted in reply and the pair began walking.

It was only approaching midday when Hiccup noticed the sky darkening slightly and the wind began to pick up.

Hiccup shivered, feeling the sting of the cold and Toothless brayed in concern.

"It's alright, Bud," Hiccup said, giving the Night Fury a reassuring pat. "Just surprised me is all."

The sun was trying to peek through the clouds, but it offered no warmth. As he looked around and his breath began to rise skyward, Hiccup could see thousands of tiny little flurries making their way to Earth from the sky above.

Before long however, the sun finally lost its battle against the dark clouds and the last visible rays disappeared with it.

In the brittle air, Hiccup could feel the hope he had that morning now slipping away as well; the swirling white flakes were now coming in a greater abundance and were beginning to lay upon the ground, covering the ground in a white blanket. At this point, he and Toothless would be unable to follow any tracks they might have left back to where they had slept the night before. Perhaps Toothless could track by their scent?

The only way to navigate was by the sun, and now it had been overtaken by the clouds. And it wouldn't be long before it sank below the horizon, leaving dragon and rider to shiver beneath the cloud-covered stars.

The cold was already beginning to get to Toothless as well and the dragon quickly shot a bolt of flaming plasma onto the ground.

Hiccup leaned against the dragon as the flames went out and Toothless shot another.

The boy prayed silently that the snow and wind would cease before Toothless reached his shot limit.

Suddenly, Toothless's eyes narrowed as he glared at something before them. Something Hiccup could not see. But whatever it was, it was clearly causing Toothless to grow more agitated with each passing moment.

Hiccup then heard a girl's scream.

Was it someone else who happened to be trapped out in this unforgiving tundra? Or was the wind playing tricks on him?

"Hello?" he called out. "Is someone there?"

"Dragon!"

Before Hiccup could say a word, a knife flew out of the snowy void and nearly struck Toothless's shoulder.

"No! Don't!" Hiccup cried, hurrying in front of Toothless and stretching out his arms. "He won't hurt you, he's friendly!"

"What?" came an incredulous voice. "You're…defending this thing?"

Hiccup didn't have a chance to reply before a girl who appeared around his age appeared.

She had long, black hair that fell to her waist and light grey eyes and she wore a dark grey, nearly black, dress that fell nearly to her feet, with a dark blue apron dress over it and a fur cloak wrapped around her shoulders.

He then noticed the small arsenal of knives that hung from the belt about her waist.

"Who are you?" the girl demanded; her dark brows furrowed as she looked from Toothless to Hiccup. "Where did you come from, and why are you here?"

"We'll go," Hiccup held his hands up to show he meant no harm, "We were just stopping for some rest. We were looking for food, but if this place is already spoken for, we'll just go."

"You haven't answered my questions," the girl frowned. "Tell me who you are, where you came from, and why you're here?"

"Where exactly is here?" Hiccup questioned, knowing he was pushing it, but he needed to know.

"You answer my questions first."

"I…We, are from further south," Hiccup answered. "And as I said, we were only stopping here to rest and maybe get some food, then we were going to be on our way."

The girl was about to say something, when she looked up, and her eyes widened.

"We'll talk more at the village," she said, looking reluctant. "My father would be displeased if he knew I left someone here to die."

Hiccup wondered if this might be a trap, but soon decided if it was, he and Toothless could make a hasty retreat.

"The dragon stays out here though," the girl said, glaring at Toothless, who glared back.

"No," Hiccup said, his voice growing hard. "He comes with me, or I don't go back with you."

"You'd really let yourself freeze to death for this beast?" the girl asked. She no longer looked angry, simply curious.

"Yes," Hiccup nodded without hesitation. "Wherever he goes, I go and wherever I go, he goes. If you can't accept that, then you'll just have to go back without me."

"Odin's beard," the girl sighed and shrugged. "Fine, but if he attacks anyone in my village, you both pay with your lives."

"No worries there," Hiccup assured her.

The girl scoffed before gesturing sarcastically to the snowy landscape.

"Welcome to the Ice-Shelf Isles."
