Soulmates

.

.

It's a cold Friday evening, You decide you don't want to go with your friends, you're going to get a coffee from your favorite place, find a spot and read. Yes that sounds like heaven.

The December snow has covered New York and somehow it seems even more beautiful.

After placing your order you scan the room for a place to sit when all of a sudden…

"Santana?" You exhale and it makes her drop the muffin in her hand. She almost seems frozen unable to look up so you tilt your head, trying to get a good look at your personal ghost of christmas past.

"San" you try again and this time when she looks up.

"Q?" She whispers back, her eyes glossed over and you now she feels it too. It's always been there between the two of you, somewhere between the slaps and insults love grew in between and through the cracks….

"Q" you hear again snapping out of your reverie.

You can't seem to stop staring at her. In high school she was gorgeous, you knew it, she knew it, hell the whole town knew it but seeing her now... You can't quite put her finger on it but maybe it's her hair that's a little shorter or maybe it's the freshly fallen snow in the window contrasting against her perfect skin or just maybe it's the soft lighting of the coffee shop making her almost glow but whatever it is, she is absolutely breathtaking.

"You're staring" She laughs softly

You lean back and smile "I'm sorry it's just…."

"What Q?" She says leaning forward

"You're beautiful" You exhale because it's true and for some reason, it makes her laugh "Same ol Fabray, well since you've highjacked that seat why don't you tell me what you've been up too?"

You take a minute to think about what you're going to say. Are you really going to tell her how lost you've been without her? How you can't seem to hold a relationship because the sun rose and set with her? No, your pride won't let you do that. So you what you do best…...

"Great….I've umm…been great, finished Yale a year early and now I'm…"

"Writing for the New York Times" she finishes your sentence and you're blown away.

"You know?" You ask in disbelief as she nods.

"Of course I do Q, I have all of your articles. Did you honestly think I wouldn't?"

You look at her and realize how sincere she's being.

This is the Santana Lopez you fell in love with, the very same Santana Lopez you let slip through your fingers, the same Santana Lopez who would sing yellow submarine at the top of her lungs just to make you smile. She's always had this way of crushing your walls and making a bee line straight to your heart.

"You know I've always loved you…Santana Lopez"

She sits back in complete shock, her eyebrows could almost touch the ceiling right now "What?" she responds, finally finding her voice.

"I've loved you since high school but at the time your world revolved around a different blonde"

She puts her head down and nods

"Then we had our moment and…." You take a minute because how can you possibly find the words but you know you have to. You owe her that much.

"And it was everything to me but at the time I didn't think I deserved you, us, anything really so I did what I do best"

"You ran" Her eyes gloss as she wipes a tear that has fallen, now it's your turn to nod.

"I ran but please know, there hasn't been one minute of any hour in any day that I ever stopped thinking about you"

You know she wants to interrupt but you put your hand up begging her to let you finish "Please Santana let me get this out" she nods allowing you to continue "No one had me the way you did and that scared the shit out of me. No one has ever been able to love me the way you did"

"Do" she says and it stops you mid sentence so she continues "You said did but it's do, present tense, I've always loved you Lucy you know that, you left me but now looking back, I think it's what I needed, maybe what we both needed?"

"I'm so sorry Santana" you try but now it's her turn, she holds up her hand shaking her head so you let her continue "No Q, I was absolutely heartbroken but it fueled something in me. I was a no one from no where but somehow….. Quinn Fabray loved me" she laughs pointing to herself "And I figured if I could get her to love me, there was nothing I couldn't do! Do you realize I have my masters Q? Santana Lopez has a fucking masters!"

This makes you both laugh

"Okay first of all stop talking about me in the third person, second of all"

In a bold move you reach out and grab her hand to which she intertwines your fingers allowing you to continue

"You've always been amazing Santana, your potential was untapped and I always knew you were destined for greatness, you just had to see it"

"Damn it Fabray" she says shaking that gorgeous head "You are definitely a writer"

The two of you spend the next few hours reminiscing and you're pleasantly surprised there isn't an ounce of venom in the way you speak to each other, it's almost as if you two are simply picking up from where you've left off.

You realized a long time ago that the two of you were bound by some invisible string, no matter how far away you got from each other eventually that string would pull you both back. That makes you smile because it finally makes sense why no one else could ever stack up to the one one woman you measured, everyone against .

"What?" She asks you and you can't help but stare at the girl in front of you in awe, realizing she's still equal parts the girl you fell in love with so long ago and now the woman you cant seem to live without.

"Can we start over?" You ask and she seems to take a second to really think it over before…..

"No" she finally responds and you are crushed, but you of all people should understand after all, you were the one who broke her heart. So you nod, deciding to grab your things and leave but her hand on your arm stops you.

"Let me finish Luce" You sit back down but can't seem to look at her. "Please look at me" she gently tilts your chin up so your hazel eyes meet her soft brown ones and now it's she who smiles.

"I said no because I don't want to start over, you and I had something we couldn't explain, you were my best friend who became my lover and eventually my soulmate, so no I don't want to start over" she laughs as if my request was ridiculous but takes my hand again

"Because I want to keep going from here…..with you"

You smile as you wipe the tears from your eyes, "Damn you Santana Lopez I thought I was the writer" She laughs shaking her head before standing to pull you up with her.

The hug she gives you is one that will stay embedded in you until the end of time, you're absolutely sure of it.

"I'd like that" you finally husk out against her chest. She finally pulls you in for a kiss and it's exactly how you remember it. Like Christmas morning, like that first sip of hot coffee waking you up, like a breath of fresh air. It's a feeling you haven't felt in years and you know, you never want to let it go again.

"Come on Q" she says putting her hand in yours leading you out of the coffee shop and hopefully towards the rest of your forever, Together.
