PS 7 – The Cup
Aw… man, it feels good to be back for riding duels, thought Yugo.
He and Yuzu just barely managed to enroll in the tournament. Right now, they were in the stadium about to watch the exhibition match. They weren't supposed to be there, but he wanted to see Yuya and his duel against Jack Atlas. Yugo knew he wasn't actually his little brother, he wasn't the guy he showed how to do riding duels and with whom he fought for the last piece of food… either way, he wanted to see him. It wasn't fair that only Yuto and Yuri got to meet their brother's counterpart.
Yuya! Why are you using XYZ summoning and Fusion summoning! What happened to Synchro summoning, it is way better than the other two! Yugo was enthralled watching the match and he had to admit, Yuya had some cool monsters (he even had Yuto's Dark Rebellion XYZ Dragon, when did that happen?) but he was missing the best summoning method. Maybe after the match he could go to his room and show him how awesome synchro monsters really were…
That bastard! He just saw Yuya's defeat against Jack, with the other duelist throwing him out of his bike.
"Yuy—!" Yuzu was going to speak for his friend when she was interrupted by Yugo.
"That bastard!" he shouted out loud, "What's he doing?! Yuya doesn't even know how to do riding duels!"
"Yugo! Calm down!" the girl tried to calm him. It was really sweet how worried he was for her friend.
"But Yuzu! Yuya could have gotten hurt!"
"Yugo, we need to—" this time she was interrupted by a security man taking ahold of her.
"Hey! Let her go!" shouted Yugo who managed to evade the guy trying to catch him, "We're participants of the Friendship Cup!"
"You're to come with us to the Participants' dormitories."
Now Yugo was trapped in a fancy room.
At least, they have good room service, he thought, and Yuya is probably here too.
He wanted to check on him, but for that he needed to find a way to get out. The window and door were locked. He also knew there was someone outside his room; additional security, undoubtedly. In here, he needed to be careful about using his Academia duel disk. Calling his brothers was out of the question because there was a chance there were cameras in the room (hopefully the bathroom was free) so a message would have to do. Better to be safe, he got under the covers and took out his other duel disk.
WE'RE IN. EYES EVERYWHERE, SECURITY TIGHT. YUYA SAFE.
He actually didn't know Yuya's whereabouts, but it was a good way to calm his brothers. Yuto probably saw the duel and must be worried sick. Getting from out of the covers, he received a message/threat from the Administrative Council about winning and then room service arrived with his food.
After eating, his deck started to shine. When Yugo went to check it out, the culprit was Clear Wing Synchro Dragon. The card was probably resonating with something, if that were the case it must be with Yuya's Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon. Maybe that's the reason Yuto gave his own card to Yuya…?
How do I get out? I need to find Yuya, thought the synchro duelist.
If this Yuya was a little like his brother, then he could be in a depressed state because of the outcome of the duel. After all, this Yuya was a dueltainer like their dad. Jack Atlas was a huge jerk to step up in Yuya's dream like that… even if his technique in his D-Wheel was really beautiful. Thinking back a little, he noticed while he was getting food the guard outside his door was a kid. The situation in the City must be awful if they have kids working.
Maybe if I appeal to his heart?
"Hey! I know someone's outside," shouted Yugo. "Please! I need to see my brother!"
Revealing something like that was a dangerous bet and he could already hear Yuri and Yuto in his head calling him out on this, but he needed to see Yuya.
"He's the one that got his ass kicked in the exhibition match! I just want to speak to him a little. Please."
After some minutes his door opened and the kid outside looked at him. His eyes widened a little in surprise, probably because he saw how similar he looked to Yuya; a point to use in his favor.
"Please, he's my little brother."
Yuya wasn't having a good day. After his fight with Jack he wasn't sure if he could stop the war and bring smiles to everyone with his entertainment dueling; does he even knew what his entertainment dueling was actually for? He was doubting himself and just wanted to see someone…
"What're you doing here?"
"He wants to visit his brother for a minute."
"Please, I just want to see him for a moment, he must be feeling alone."
Yuya heard from outside his room when suddenly the door opened, and he saw a guy with a similar face as him accompanied by two guard kids.
He isn't Yuto, thought the entertainer, who is this guy?
"Yuya! Little brother!" he shouted.
Little brother—?
The guy came to him and gave him a hug. Yuya couldn't move because of the surprise. The other one turned his head and said to the kids/guards outside:
"Can you give us a moment? Family reunion!"
"We can give you ten minutes, be quick!"
"That's enough, thanks a lot!"
The kids closed the door and Yuya was unexpectedly alone with this look-alike.
"Well, it went better than expected, maybe I can use that trick again…" the guy mumbled to himself.
"Who are you?"
"Me? I'm Yugo! Nice to finally meet you, Yuya! Yuzu has told me a lot about you."
"You know Yuzu?"
His blue-and-yellow double suddenly became shy, not looking him in the eye and touching the back of his head.
"Yeah, I— I may be the guy that… you know… that took her from Standard," he said a little quietly at the end.
What?!
"I'm really sorry about that! My friend Rin was kidnapped some months ago and I thought Yuzu was her. They have the same face, you see."
The same? Like Yuto and me… and this guy, it appears, thought Yuya.
He wanted to be mad at Yugo because he got his friend involved in this mess, but he just gave him a sincere apology and didn't seem like a bad guy.
"It's okay, I forgive you. Either way, in the long run I think it was actually for the better you took her, if not, Academia could have kidnapped her."
Yuya was blinded by the biggest smile he had ever seen. He didn't know his face could make that kind of expression. It seemed Yugo was honestly sorry and wanted his forgiveness.
"Is she okay?" asked Yuya.
"Yeah, don't worry. She is participating in the tournament too—"
"What?! Why?!"
"Don't worry too much, she's a tough girl. She wants to warn the people of this dimension about the war against the Fusion Dimension."
Even Yuzu wants to fight the war, thought Yuya, will I really be able to stop it?
This was not Yugo's little brother, but he knew that face.
"Hey, man, I know you want to stop the war and make people smile while doing it."
"Am I that obvious?" Apparently all people with the same face as him could read him like a book.
"No, well, kind of. I knew a guy who wanted the same thing as you; to make people smile. Believe in yourself and keep doing your thing, I'm sure you'll find a way to reach the people here, if someone can do it, it's you, Yuya."
After Yugo's speech, Yuya got some tears in his eyes and gave the other one a hug.
"Thank you," he said under his breath.
"Don't sweat it!"
Yuya separated from him and gave the other a good look.
"You know, it's strange," said Yuya, "there's this other guy, his name's Yuto, and he kind of looks like me too. Except, he's from the XYZ Dimension. I wonder if I'm like Yuzu and have people from different dimensions who look like me."
"Yuzu told me about it," said Yugo, "she said there even was a guy like us from the Fusion Dimension."
"Now that you mention Fusion, your name kind of sounds like—"
"Don't even think about it!" shouted Yugo. That made his brother-not-brother laugh. Yugo was happy he managed to make the other one smile, even if it was at his expense.
"Speaking of Fusion, you should totally try synchro summoning! It's way better than that fusion crap!" said an exciting Yugo. (Back in the Fusion Dimension, Yuri got the feeling Yugo was saying stupid things.)
"Eh? Synchro summoning?" Yuya was surprised from hearing that. Maybe the other was right, if he wanted to appeal to the people of the Synchro Dimension, he should try using their summoning method. "I'll think about it, I know the theory, but I have never really—"
"I'll teach you!"
A knock interrupted them, and the door opened.
"It's time, you have to return to your room," said the kid that accompanied his visitor.
"Aw, man, we were getting to something good!" said Yugo with a pout on his face.
"It's okay, Yugo. I don't want the kids to get in trouble and it was good seeing you," said Yuya with a little blush.
The synchro duelist went for his head and ruffled his hair.
"Don't sweat it, Yuya. That's what big brothers are for. Maybe at night we could meet again?" he turned to look at the kids by the door with hope in his eyes.
"… We'll think about it."
"Hell yeah! You're awesome kids!" said Yugo who turned to see Yuya and gave him a wink, "See you later, little brother!"
"See you later… brother," he said back.
Yugo just smiled at that at left the room. This meeting really lifted Yuya's spirits. His synchro counterpart was a really nice guy. Thinking about him, made him think about Yuto who he hadn't seen since arriving in this dimension, I wonder what he's doing?
Yuto was watching from his hiding place over a ceiling the matches of the Friendship Cup. He was angry at what Jack Atlas did but a message from Yugo managed to calm him down.
In between matches, he went a turned people into cards. With everyone's attention in the Cup, his job became easier.
On the first day, the duels were first a guy named Crow Hogan against Gongenzaka with the latter losing (that must have hurt Yuya); then a radical guy called Shinji Weber against Tsukikage with Tsukikage losing (and Yuto was pretty sure it was on purpose); the third duel was an old man called Tokumatsu Chojiro vs Yuzu with the girl wining in a spectacular manner; and finally a guy named Tony Simmons against Serena with Serena claiming the victory. Yuto was relieved Yuya and Yugo hadn't had to fight, but he was scared that they could be put to fight against each other. I wonder how they are doing?
After the first round of duels, dinner was served to the participants and even though Yugo wanted to visit Yuya again, the kid told him it was better to try the next day. Something about doing it twice the same day being too risky.
The first duel of the second day was Yuya vs Duel Chaser 227; the same chaser who tried to capture Yugo and Yuzu the day they arrived to the Synchro Dimension. Yuya tried to reach the people with his entertainment, but they didn't want to listen to him. The thing that horrified Yugo the most of the duel was the way the Duel Chaser and the spectators were pushing Yuya in a bad direction. The moment he summoned Odd-Eyes Saber Dragon it didn't felt like Yuya at all. Yuto told them that during the Standard invasion Yuya managed to evolve his monsters into an incredible powerful new one under Zarc's influence. Maybe that was what happened here as well.
Yuya… He was definitely going to visit him tonight and no one was going to stop him.
The next duel was his own against Sawatari. He never got the chance to meet him while in their own world and Yuto told them he was a little less proficient at dueling than back in their universe. Nevertheless, he was going to be careful because he didn't have pendulum cards in his deck, unlike Sawatari who had. Something on his favor was riding duels combined with action duels was the same as in his universe, the only difference was that you needed to pick the card from the floor and there were a lot more here.
I got this! Thought Yugo when leaving his room.
Damn it Yuto! Thought Yugo as his fight with Sawatari became a little more difficult than expected. Midway through the duel he got a strange feeling in him as if Yuya was playing alongside him. What's this? Is this another of Zarc's powers in Yuya? In the end, he managed to win the duel.
The third match of the day was between a guy called Damon Lopez and a freaky strange guy called Sergey Volkov. He gave Yugo the creeps. The winner was Sergey.
The last match of the day was an intense duel between Dennis and Kurosaki. He didn't know either of them personally although he has heard about both guys. Dennis was a somewhat friend of Yuri who was actually a spy from Academia, and Kurosaki was an emo guy friend of Yuto who was looking for his little sister. He respected that. Kurosaki managed to reveal Dennis' true character as a member of the Fusion Dimension. Yugo hoped his brother was careful around the guy; emo as he may be, it seemed he had a good eye for liars. The match became so destructive, it was going to be miracle to continue dueling in the stadium the next day.
At night, he asked the kid to let him see Yuya again and got his wish granted.
"Yuya!" shouted Yugo after closing the door behind him, "Are you okay?"
"Oh, Yugo," said the other, "you came?"
"I wanted to visit yesterday but the kid told me it was better to wait until next day. That's not important, are you okay?" he asked again.
"Why do you think something is wrong?" Yuya could not look him in the eye when asking this.
"…Fine, let's talk about me teaching you synchro summoning." Yugo wasn't like his other two brothers, he would wait until Yuya wanted to open up. Yuri was the one to ask indirect questions until you accidentally confessed and Yuto asked directly until you inevitably confessed.
Yugo started to explain how to synchro summon and they discovered Yuya even had already a tuner monster given to him by some kid named Sam. They were having a good time and eventually his brother's counterpart opened up to him.
"It was a horrible match, right?"
"Honestly, I think you did an amazing job. I didn't know you could move like that in a motorcycle, the first time Yuzu tried it she got scared of the ignition."
Mission accomplished, he got a little laugh out of Yuya.
"Speaking seriously, don't let the people tell you how to duel. You're the one that is dueling, and you know how you want to do it. Don't let yourself be moved by the spectators."
"Thanks Yugo," said Yuya a little teary-eyed, "you're a really nice guy."
"The best person you'll ever meet."
They laughed again.
"Then there's this issue with Dennis," said Yuya, "I thought he was our friend, we even dueled together back in Standard."
"Sometimes you think you know someone, but they are actually planning to stab you in the back," said Yugo. That topic hit a little closer to home than he wanted to admit.
After that, Yuya told him that he managed to send a card to Yuzu and received an encouraging message from Reira. These events and his talk with Yugo made him feel a lot better.
The time to talk finished and Yugo had to return to his room. He promised to visit again the next day.
Back in his room, he went to the bathroom with the Academia duel disk, started the shower to make some noise and contacted his brothers.
"Hey, guys, anything new to report?" asked Yugo.
"Are you okay? How's Yuya?" asked Yuto instead. He probably saw the duels and was concerned about them. Typical Yuto, thought Yugo.
"Yuya's fine. I managed to talk to him and even though he's a little shaken about his duel, I think he'll manage. This Yuya is a lot stronger than we give him credit for. I— well, I'm fine but something strange did happen." His brothers listened carefully to his experience during his own duel.
"Something like that never happened between me and Yuya," said Yuto, "the closest thing I can think of was when our dragons tried to call for each other back when he tried to duel me with Sora."
"Maybe Zarc's presence is getting stronger," said Yuri. If that was the case, the clock was ticking, and they needed to complete their plan before something happened to Yuya.
Remembering something, Yugo asked his oldest brother:
"Why did you gave Dark Rebellion XYZ Dragon to Yuya?"
"You gave it to Yuya?" asked Yuri, surprised to hear about it.
"Yeah, back in Standard, after our first meeting. Sorry I forgot to tell you, guys. I thought it could help him in the following fights. Remember how I told you about a powerful monster he managed to summon," both brothers nodded. "It was actually an XYZ monster using both Dark Rebellion and Odd-Eyes as materials; Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon."
It left the two of them speechless. Their little brother had never thought about combining their monsters before.
"Think he can do it with all dragons?" asked Yugo.
"I don't know, but there's a big chance he can," said Yuto.
"Yugo, I have a question," said Yuri, "now that you're spending a lot of time with Yuya, Yuzu's bracelet hasn't been an issue?"
"Now that you mention it, no. Maybe it's because she's far away from us."
"Wait!" said Yuto, he suddenly noticed something from way back. "Yuya, Serena and I were all together before leaving Standard and her bracelet didn't light up. Serena's bracelet can't transport us, but you guys told me it released light when you were together back in Academia, right?"
Yugo just nodded not understanding right away the point of that, on the other hand, Yuri had an idea already forming in his mind.
"You think something is different regarding this issue?" he asked.
"The only thing that changed was Yuya had Dark Rebellion too. Maybe if he has all dragons, the girls' bracelets will not affect us."
"What?! It would be perfect!" said an excited Yugo, "Then I just need to give him Clear Wing."
"I'll have to wait a little before giving him Starving Venom," said Yuri, "it would be suspicious if I don't use my ace monster. Are you sure about giving him Clear Wing right now this far in the tournament?"
"It's okay, I can manage. Later at night I'll give it to him, I just need to think of a way for him to accept it, I guess."
"And how are you doing, Yuto?" asked Yuri changing topics.
"I'm fine. Doing my part, don't worry about it," he said (Typical Yuto, thought both brothers), "the losers of the tournament are sent to the underground facility, but according to Tsukikage they're fine. When the moment is right, we'll get them out of there and go to the Fusion Dimension."
"You guys need to be careful," said Yuri, "Sora is there in the city."
Both brothers were surprised to hear that.
"He's here?" asked Yugo, "Why?"
"Special mission to capture Serena," said Yuri with a serious face, "and Academia knows Yuzu is there too. Dennis came back a little while ago and informed us. They're preparing to send some Obelisk Force units to seize them."
"Damn it!" cursed Yugo.
Damn it, indeed, thought Yuto. They were running out of time.
"I'll keep you both informed if anything new comes up," said Yuri.
With that, they ended the call.
At night, Yuri and Yugo received a message from Yuto.
COUP D'ÉTAT, ROGER MOVES, DON'T TRUST SYNCHRO
The brothers couldn't get any moment of rest.
Author notes
Yugo and Yuya get the chance to talk! It was something I always wanted to see in the anime and we never got
Let's hope Yugo doesn't get too attached ;)
When I said we were going to speedrun the anime, I wasn't joking. Flash duels!
