Day 5: First Kiss

They were so different. It was one of the first things that Sakura noticed the day the new student came into her class. The new student was serious and didn't laugh about everything, unlike herself. She was quiet and introverted, unlike herself. She was good at various subjects, unlike herself. And yet, she couldn't help but be intrigued by the new student. Or maybe their differences was exactly what made her be so intrigued by the new student. She didn't know much about the new student. In fact, the only thing she knew was her name: Nakamura Mei. In Sakura's ears, the name was so beautiful. And maybe she imagined having the surname Nakamura every once in a while. Just for the fun of course.

It would take two full years for the two of them to actually exchange some words. It was only a short conversation, consisting of Sakura asking if Mei was watching the finals of table tennis of the Olympic games and Mei answering with a short yes. But that conversation meant everything to Sakura. She finally noticed that even though Mei and herself were so different, they did share a common interest: table tennis. Ever since she was young, she would always watch table tennis games on the TV. And while everyone else was talking about duels, Sakura would want to talk about table tennis. She dropped talking about it once she enrolled in the Duel Academy, after all, everyone there was so into dueling that it wouldn't make sense to talk about it. But now she knew she could talk to Mei about it. And so she did. She could talk hours about table tennis and Sakura was sure that Mei would be at some point annoyed by her constant wall of text consisting of her favourite players, the latest games, the newest equipment and the upcoming tournaments. But to her surprise, Mei would actually start talking more and more. Soon they would be known as the inseparable table tennis duo.

At one point during their school days, both Mei and Sakura decided that there needs to be a table tennis club. To their surprise, there was actually a fair share of students who participated in it. Club meetings were every Thursday. In the beginning, they only played one versus one matches and Sakura hated playing against Mei. The black haired student was so skilled in her game, it only caused frustration in Sakura. One day, she was so frustrated that she only sat on the bench, hugging her knees for the whole meeting. It was then that Mei suggested that maybe they should try having two versus two matches as well. Everyone in the club agreed and so they started doing those matches as well. At first, playing with another person was so unfamiliar to Sakura. Maybe it was because the other student in her team wasn't that skilled yet. But Sakura knew there was another reason. And it didn't take long until she figured out that the reason was in fact that she was paired with the wrong person. She was paired with Mei for the final match of the day and it just felt so natural playing together with Mei. From that moment on, they won every single match in Duel Academy.

But their great chemistry in table tennis wasn't the only thing that Sakura realized that day. It didn't cross her mind at first, but being paired with Mei during their table tennis games made her realize how attractive the black haired student was. She was taller than herself, she had short hair that framed her face so perfectly and she was quite muscular. All those things were so attractive to her. So attractive that she couldn't help but stare at the black haired student during their regular classes. So attractive that she couldn't help but think about various things when staring at the black haired student. She blamed her teenager hormones for the mess that she was thinking about. But honestly, thinking about being pressed against the wall while being kissed by the tall black haired student wasn't that bad at all.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of laughter around her. She looked around, only to find the teacher standing in front of her with a furious look. "Tanaka, would you mind answering the question?", he asked. Of course, Sakura had no idea what class they even had now. The whole situation ended with her having to go to the teacher after the class. To her surprise, the teacher wanted to talk to Mei as well. So now they were standing in front of the teacher. He was talking about what a great student Mei was and how bad Sakura was in comparison. So he suggested that Mei should tutor Sakura and both of them agreed.

Maybe she shouldn't have agreed though, since now she was alone with Mei in Mei's bedroom. Of course that was enough for Sakura's thoughts to be about something completely different than geography. A hand landed on Sakura's. "What's wrong?", Mei asked her concerned. Sakura couldn't answer, not with Mei's soft hand on her own. The only things she could think about was kissing Mei and she couldn't possibly tell Mei that. So she couldn't answer. "Are you not feeling well?", the black haired student asked, her hand now on Sakura's forehead. Sakura swallowed. She surely was blushing right now and the only thing in her vision were Mei's perfect shaped lips. They looked so soft. And before Sakura knew it, her lips fell onto Mei's. And before her brain could realize that she just kissed Mei without even knowing if the black-haired student felt the same, she felt Mei kiss her back. Sakura didn't learn anything about geography that day. But making out with Mei helped her with biology at least.

"I really like you," Sakura said a while after they had stopped kissing. Kissing while sitting next to each other got uncomfortable after a while so they had rearranged their position quite often. From sitting in Mei's lap to lying underneath the tall black haired student. Right now, they were just lying in the bed next to each other. Mei didn't answer for quite some time and Sakura got nervous. What if the black haired student didn't feel the same? Did she just ruin their great friendship by making out with Mei? "Why are you not saying something?", she asked and looked to her side, only to find Mei being asleep already. "Oh you fell asleep," Sakura murmured more to herself than to Mei. She looked at the clock that was hanging on the wall of Mei's bedroom. It was quite late after all. How long had they been making out? She shook her head slightly. She shouldn't think about it too much. She also had to get home. Her parents were probably super mad at her already. So she wanted to sit up but apparently her movement woke up Mei. The tall student held onto her arm which caused Sakura to look at Mei again. "Does that mean you like me?", the tall student asked tiredly, obviously referring to their making out from before. Sakura smiled brightly and bend down to kiss Mei again. "Yes, it does," she whispered and Mei smiled slightly now as well.

A/N: I think Mei/Sakura are quite a rare pare for Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's. For everyone who doesn't know them: they are from the manga and they actually don't appear that often. I got the idea of shipping them after reading the fanfiction of my dear friend Crimson Priestess of Miracles.

I kind of headcanaon Sakura to be quite a bad student. She's only good at things that she's interested in. Don't ask me where the table tennis headcanon comes from. I just think it's cute that both of them have a different hobby than dueling.

Also, shame on this website that you can't choose Sakura and Mei as characters for the story :(
