Chapter 2 - 魔法がない場 ~ See A Bird's Eye View
"Ms. Okazaki," my younger self sounded like I was talking to my mom, "I was reading through some of the archives, and I came across an article about entanglement allowing birds to see Earth's magnetic field."
"Hmm? What about it?"
"It's an old article, and I couldn't find any follow up on it. I was wondering if you knew anything more about it."
"Well, I'm not a biologist. That's the reason why you're probably not finding anything about it. That said, the theory behind bird navigation was laid out in the early 2020s, but wasn't truly confirmed until after the Unification of Physics itself.
"In any case, yes, birds do see Earth's magnetic field via changes to proteins caused by entangled electrons. However, they're the only known example of an animal having an adaptation like this."
"You mean even after cataloging 75% of all animal species, we haven't found any other example?"
"I'm afraid not. It does make sense though. How many actual clades of animals would actually benefit from an adaptation based in quantum mechanics? Animals like flatworms live so simply, that there would be no pressure to keep an adaptation like that. Maybe more complex animals like mammals could make use of a convergent adaptation, but mammals seem to lack the evolutionary time, so to speak, to have developed it. There were even experiments trying to entangle whole animals, although those were eventually proven to be in error.
"With all that said, there's also nothing to say that individuals with mutations that allowed them to exploit some facet of quantum mechanics haven't appeared. There are many reports of people who have had strange, mystical, or magical powers throughout history. Most of them are likely fake, or are trumped up versions of real events, but if they were real, I could see this as one likely avenue of explanation."
"Are you saying that you believe in magic?"
"In this perfectly explainable unified field of physics, Kitashirakawa, there is no room for magic."
