Chapter 20
Natsu's Hungry!
I'm in the guild hall right now, staring at the disgusting sight that is Natsu eating. Food is flying all over the place. The food is entering his mouth at a frightening speed. It is doubtful that he chewed even a bit of it; he is just shoveling it into his mouth desperately. Everyone around us has given us a wide birth, staring at him incredulously. I'm not, because this is all I ever see of his eating manners, but even I am still disgusted.
I mean, I just started talking to him when he immediately after ordered enough food to feed an army. I can't talk to him when he is eating unless I want to get food spit all over me. Yah, I think I can live without that experience.
It takes him forever to finish all that food, despite the ferocity in which he tore into the food.
"You done?" I ask sarcastically, now that I am out of danger of having food spit all over me.
He doesn't bother looking up at me in response; too busy staring at his plate. Perhaps checking for any scraps he may have missed. There are none.
"I'm still hungry," he says. I stare at him in shock. After all that food, and trust me that there was more food than should humanly of been able to eat, he is still hungry! That's a lot, even by Natsu standards.
"Are you serious?" I ask, not managing to keep the disgusted shock out of my tone.
He just nods in response.
Before I could berate him for eating too much, he call's Mira over.
"Yes, Natsu?" She says sweetly, with her usual Mira smile on her face.
"Can I have another round of everything I just ordered," He asks eagerly.
"Be out in a minute," Mira says, nodding.
I sit there gobsmacked.
He sees my expression and asks me confused, "What?"
I just shake my head and remain silent.
In a couple of minutes, Mira comes back out with Natsu's overabundance of food. As soon as she has set it down, he'd already began chowing down on it with the same ferocity as before.
"Natsu," I hiss at him, appalled by his lacking mannerisms.
"What?" He grumbles out, some food falling out of his mouth.
I shudder of disgust rips through me. I have to take a moment to shove the baby barf back down my throat before I am able to speak. "What do you have to say to Mira?"
He looks at me confused for a moment before he realizes what I am referring to.
"Can I have another drink?" he asks.
Okay, so he didn't understand.
"Natsu!" I yell, appalled.
"What?" he asks grumpily, not happy at being taken away from his food again, even for a moment.
"Where are your manners?" I ask disgusted.
His blank stare tells me that he's still not getting it. I'm done trying.
I turn to Mira. "Since this Neanderthal is too depraved to be able to conjure up any semblance of manners, I will do it for him. Thank you for the meal." I say, sincerely.
Natsu doesn't bother adding his thanks, or even bother paying attention to anything outside of his food.
Mira smiles and answers, "Thank you and its okay. Natsu's always like this when it comes to food."
"That's no excuse," I grumble out.
"No, it's not, but I don't care." She says with her easy-going smile, showing how fond she is of Natsu, despite his decorum.
She goes back to the bar after that, and I am again stuck with just Natsu's company. The sight of him eating repulses me.
"Can't you eat like a normal human being?" I ask, exasperated.
He doesn't bother responding; he just shoots me a blank look and goes back to eating.
I sit there, starring at him in silence. This is not the first time this has occurred. It seems that recently he has been eating more and more. I'm going broke just trying to keep the kitchen stocked.
I can't help but wonder why the sudden spike in eating. I mean, it's not like he is any more active than usual. He is also kind of past the age on where you can blame it on him being a growing boy. He could have a worm . . . but I am pretty sure that due to his magical consumption, any worms that might have found its way in are sure to have been incinerated by now.
Could he be upset about something? Eating as a form of comfort? I know that I, and I am sure most other females, eat when upset. It could be that, but he hasn't shown any signs of being downtrodden. It's possible . . . but unlikely.
I am thoroughly stumped as to why he has been eating so much. I can't picture any differences in his normal life. No significant changes. No reason for this change in behavior.
Frustrated and needing to get away from Natsu, if only briefly, I take a quick bathroom break to freshen up. As I exit the bathroom I run into Mira right outside. She is heading to Natsu to give him the drink he ordered. That thought brings back my frustration with him.
"Mira, I just wanted to apologize again for Natsu," I say.
"Don't worry! All men in Fairy Tail are like that, more or less," She said, with her normal smile.
"I'm sorry, I'm just so frustrated," I vent.
"What's got you so frustrated?" She asks curiously.
"Natsu! He hasn't done anything bad, but, I guess, I am just, I don't know, worried about him. Have you noticed how much food he has been eating lately? It's a lot, even for Natsu!" I let out quickly in a relieved rush, finally having someone to share my worries with.
Mira nods her head, acknowledging that she too has noticed this phenomenon.
"I also noticed that this is not the first time for this sudden eating spike though. You probably don't know this but Natsu started eating more relatively around the time you joined the guild. I was worried at first, but there was nothing wrong with him. You don't have worry so much, I'm sure it is nothing now like it was nothing then," Mira said, reassuringly.
Natsu started eating more when I joined? I didn't know that. I wonder why that was. Is it just a coincidence or did my coming cause the spike? If the latter is true, why did it cause a spike? I thought he was happy that he brought me. He wasn't secretly regretting it, was he? How does this correlate with now? He is eating more even though there have been no changes. Did anything happen that I don't know about?
I had thought that talking to Mira would answer my questions, but instead I have been left with more. It's like taking a step in the dark towards the light, only to find you are in just as much darkness as you were before.
I'm about to question Mira further, but Natsu appears out of nowhere and interrupts us.
"Lucy, let's go on job," he says joyfully and thrusts the paper, which I assume has the job he wants to go on, in my face, all the while ignoring Mira.
I shot Mira an apologetic look and then answer him. "This mission is so far away! You just ate; do you really want to get on a train right now?" I ask him.
His face pales but he remains firm with his decision.
I sigh and relent. A smile breaks out across his face, chasing away the pallor that just adorned his face.
He grabs my hand and pulls me along, rushing to the train station. His hand is surprisingly bigger than mine, and it's so warm. It feels . . . nice. Though he has a slender, lean frame, his back is rather broad and masculine. I never knew he could be so manly. It's easy to not notice such a thing when he spends the majority of his time eating, acting like a child, or cowering from Erza.
In his rush to get us to the train station in, we get there in record time. When we get there, we gradually slow to a stop. We're still holding hands. His back is still to me. No move is made to change our position.
I ask him a question that I never would have been able to ask him had we been face to face.
"Natsu, I've noticed that you have been eating more recently. I was just wondering . . . you know . . . if there was any reason for it?" I ask bashfully.
His back stiffens and the grip of his hand tightens around mine. His tension quickly falls away, so quickly that I am left questioning if I really sensed his stress to the question or if I imagined it.
He turns back to me with his usual smile adorning his face.
"No particular reason . . . just that you make me hungry," he says nonchalantly.
I stare at him dumbfounded, too shocked to reply. What does that even mean?
He slowly stalks me with a predator gleam in his eyes. He leans over, whispering softly in my ear, "I just want to. Eat. You. Up."
His warm breath caresses my ear, sending shivers down my spine.
Bite
"Kya!" I scream out of shock.
He bit my ear! He bit me! Who does that?
"Natsu," I growl, rubbing my ear. "Don't joke with me like that," I scold him.
He gives me that look again. The one that I sometimes see cross his face but haven't been able to interpret. Like always, it's gone too soon for me to analyze it or to confirm that it's not more than my over active imagination. With Natsu, my imagination always seems to be tricking me.
He laughs at me so hard that I eventually start to laugh along until we are both crying tears of laughter and both of our bellies hurt.
"Thanks for the laugh! Kami, I'm starving! Let's finish with this job so we can both eat," he says, smiling.
I don't even bother commenting. I just smile and shake my head, incredulous.
I turn my back to him and wait for the train to arrive.
From behind my back, Natsu's voice travels towards me so softly that I pass it off as my imagination and board the newly arrived train, despite Natsu's groan of devastation.
"Soon," he Lucy heard. Unheard to her was this: "Soon I shall be fulfilled."
The bunny really should start learning more about dragon instincts If only she knew that he wasn't kidding, she really is the reason why he is eating so much. He eats to hold back his instinct to claim her. Each day that passes, as he waits patiently, the urge grows and he does everything he can to hold back. He knows he must wait until she is ready. Until then, he'll stalk his prey and satiate his desire until he can devour his bunny.
Note: His desire for the bunny is neither cannibalistic nor sexual. It is one soul wanting to devour another soul, meshing them together until they are one. He desires to claim her, not as an act of possession, but so that she is his. It is not about sex but becoming one with another person in a nonsexual way.
I hope you enjoyed it!
