Chapter 12: Consequential Aftermath
'Tap! Tap! Tap! Tap! Tap!'
Facing Royman — the head of the local guild —Gazef adjusted himself on the pillowy seat.
For his taste, it was too soft; he couldn't find a comfortable position. Worse, the way the man before him tapped the flat side of his pen on the paper made his eyes tick continuously.
Yet, it was not his biggest problem at the moment!
"I thought I was clear about how things work here, Zeff-san…"
That unmoving, expressionless face that resembled a dead goblin more than of an elf. Those empty orbs that watched him continuously. Yeah, they were more of his concern now than the noise the writing instrument made.
Gazef Stronoff had faced many opponents in his life, but the way this elf glared at him almost dismissively and with that empty look caused some kind of unease in him. It was… almost unnatural.
"I apologize if I caused any turmoil in the city, but I assure you, Royman-dono, it was not my intention."
"Yet, according to the reports, you caused quite a bit of turmoil in Daedalus Street, resulting in many people becoming homeless. Fighting with an unknown assailant during this troublesome situation as the reports of many witnesses state..." the way Royman spoke was elegant, yet unnerving; his unblinking gaze made it even worse!
"As said, it was…"
"Not to mention, it is eerily suspicious that many reports also say you entered the arena before the monsters started their rampage, and strangely, the next time you appeared right after the trouble was already in the making. I find the events aligning too well to be accidental, Zeff-san."
"Are you trying to say it was me who released those monsters, Royman-dono?" Gazef squinted his eyes, almost angry, suspecting what the fat elf was trying to say. He didn't like what this elf referred to. Not one bit!
"Our current evidence marks you as one of the possible suspects. Zeff-san. Nothing more, nothing less. Your appearance in the arena, then your sudden disappearance perfectly aligning with the release of the monsters who rampaged through the city. Not to mention your reemergence in Daedalus Street and beyond is too timely to ignore. It is too early to say anything for sure, of course."
Behind Royman, Misha lowered her head, looking away while biting her lower lip, concerned with what trouble will arise from this situation.
As Gazef's advisor, the guild's head also called her to be present in this meeting — more like interrogation if anyone asked Gazef.
"This meeting is supposed to be a chance to explain my side of the story. Yet, ever since coming here, I feel like they're trying to frame me.
Leading several interrogations in his life, the Warrior Captain knows what he is speaking about.
"Yet, currently my only regret is bringing trouble to Misha."
It was bad enough he was in this situation. The last thing he needed was to endanger Misha's position in the guild.
"…And let's not mention your involvement beyond that! Taking care of that plant creature the members of the Loki familia struggled with." Royman adjusted his glasses, reading the fresh report further.
"Tha-That…!"
Misha now started to gasp, her eyes about to jump out of their sockets.
"H-He did what!?"
It was too much!
First, Zeff disappears without giving any real reason! Then monsters start to rampage not long after! Then, she was called here without anyone saying anything, questioned intensely! She was more and more confused and, at the same time, angry!
Her hands curled into a fist. Now she really wanted to slap Zeff for bringing her such trouble!
"This is too much…!" she muttered, half glaring at Gazef.
Everything happened too fast, yet, the guild already managed to secure some evidence even in such a short time, already overhearing several people during the day — even her. Nonetheless, she was still in the dark about what really happened!
"I was immensely worried about him, not even knowing where he disappeared to, or even if he was alive or not! And he had the nerve to get into trouble once again!? Guuuh! Zeff, why are you doing this to me!?"
She doesn't even know if she was blessed, or rather cursed with such a troublesome client!
"Misha…" Royman glanced at the advisor rather dismissively, making her lower her head.
"I am sorry." right! This was not the time for her rage. She needed to concentrate on what was important, and that is to find the truth!
They need to listen to his side of the story! That's the bases of their judicial system! Listening to every side of the story, then concluding! Without this! There would be chaos! Worse, they would be tyrants who judge innocents without listening to them first!
"So, Zeff-san. I am curious. What made you get involved in the events? According to your advisor, you were in her company before leaving. Seemingly spotting something in the crowd before leaving her behind."
The interrogation of Misha — as Gazef's advisor — had already taken place. And now, it was Gazef's time to give his part of the story.
"As you know, I was with my advisor, Misha, before parting ways with her."
"And why would you do that, if I may ask?"
"I spotted a suspicious person in the crowd, and I decided to investigate it."
"I see, so you say, in that thick crowd, you were able to spot someone suspicious. Tell me, what made you think that person is up to no good?"
"The way she moved, how she was wrapped in a cloak from tip to toe despite the openness of the event. Moreover, the unnatural feeling she gave away was all an indication she was up to no good. I met my fair share of people who gave away such a feeling, and they were all criminal elements."
"So it was a she?"
"Yes." Gazef nodded in confirmation.
"I see…" Royman noted what Gazef said in his paper. "And you followed her out of pure instinct?"
"Exactly…"
"Strange you have such a keen perception, Zeff-san. Almost otherworldly, or coincidental…? And this experience of yours to identify such suspicious elements? I find it quite hard to believe you have such skills. Almost like you made it all up. A fascinating story, yet, still sounds like a fabrication." Royman raised his brow, almost like he questioned Gazef's trustworthiness.
"Let's just say, in my past profession, it was a requirement to develop sharper senses and learn how to read people. I wouldn't have survived this long if I didn't develop such instinct and skills."
"Hmm, fair enough, please continue."
And with that, Gazef continued his tale, telling Royman about his findings: How he found the open cages, how the guards were out cold when he found them — affected by some strange drug or aphrodisiac. How he followed the tracks left behind carelessly by that suspicious woman — or she did so intentionally if you asked him — and eventually, how he cornered her, just to, in the last moment, be interrupted by his attacker, leaving the Daedalus Street in ruins in their fight.
Of course, he spared the unnecessary details that would give away Freya as a culprit or later can be used against the man himself.
Gazef was not stupid; he knew well he had a limited toolset and resources to use. With no significant money, real influential friends, or connections around, the only one he can count on was himself!
The woman who called herself Freya gave away the same feeling as Toth, Loki, and even Hestia — paired with some potent presence Gazef might even classify as mind control.
If his suspicion is right, this Freya might be an influential individual not only in this city but beyond its borders.
Even if he tells Royman she released the beasts and caused the commotion, it most likely isn't worth notch just now. With her influence, she can simply trample out the rumors of her involvement or invalidate every evidence he brings forth — just like most nobles did back home.
It was his word against hers!
The story of a nobody newcomer who just arrived in the city. A person who is already causing trouble stood against a wealthy, influential person who most likely had deep roots in the town and connections spreading like a deeply rooted tree.
It was obvious which side the people will believe and which they will divert the blame!
"It makes me remember too much about the court of his Majesty. All the plotting and backstabbing…"
He almost snorted in disgust, only barely holding his expression straight.
It was against the Warrior Captain's moral code to do this, but he needed to hold back this information — at least until he finds more evidence or supporters who can back him enough to face the real culprits.
Lying about who let out the beasts might gain him some blackmail material or even favors in the near future. As it may, it was currently more beneficial than the immediate truth, the truth that will bring more trouble than worth just now.
"If I tell them now the whole story as it happened, it will be a minor annoyance to that woman — calling a few favors to trample the sparks of doubt is most likely nothing to her."
It is possible they don't even believe his words; this would immediately make him look even more suspicious in the eyes of many.
"But If I keep this information for myself, for the time being at least, I might earn a temporary ally who can help my investigation in exchange for my silence."
He hated the thought of it, but he had little choice in the matter.
"Of course, she can always send assassins after me — Being the most likely only person who knows her secret is me. But the same danger stands if I tell them it was her. Not an easy choice, but experience dictates it is less likely a possibility if I keep this information for myself than annoy her just now by spreading the truth."
Fighting with that demi-human was the proof she has capable people who can compete with him. He needed to be extra careful, or he might not be able to win next time.
"I wonder if that person on the clock tower was hers too."
Or that person worked for someone else? Gazef hated uncertain things, and this feeling haunted him just now.
As his mind rambled on this, he already finished recounting his version of the tale, giving a brief recount about the happenings in the Arena, the Daedalus Street, speaking about the battle with the plant creature and his meeting with the Amazons and Aiz — of course, keeping some details for himself.
"Hmm, I see. Very descriptive, Zeff-san. Almost like you read it from a textbook."
"As stated, this is how I remember things. I can't help it." Gazef crossed his arms above his chest, making his stand against Royman — who seemingly tried to frame him, or better said, find fault on his alibi.
More than a half-day passed since the event, and the sun slowly started to set. Fortunately, the guild provided him some spare clothes — alternatively, he would be forced to wear his ragged, burnt ones.
"Hmm, I see…" Royman finished writing, looking Gazef right into his eyes.
Despite the strength difference, only apathy and maybe a minor annoyance were visible in the guild head's dead orbs. He was not afraid of Gazef, or, better said, was not aware how dangerous the Warrior Captain can be.
"To be frank with you, Zeff-san. You are a troublemaker. We don't like your kind here. Ever since you appeared, only trouble had followed. First having no Familia, then you somehow managed to beat a first-class despite not having Falna — setting up quite a calamity in the town. Then, followed by this, you started your suspicious investigation about artifacts no one ever heard of. Not speaking about the events of today. I am starting to regret allowing you to join the guild without first joining a Familia."
"But you did allow me…" Gazef pointed out, calm as his gaze scanned the chubby and short man who snorted huffishly.
Royman was visibly frustrated about his own decision — this was the only clear emotion Gazef has seen on his face ever since coming here.
"Yes, and that's my burden. All in all, with a Familia, at least we could put restrictions on you through your god or goddess. But like this? My only choice is to ban you and your advisor from the guild and even from the city to avoid further trouble."
"Wha-WHAT!?" Misha can only gape in disbelief. How is the stupidity of her client her fault!? She gave every instruction needed on what was described in the regulation! It is not her fault Zeff's skull was too thick to understand! Or is it?!
"Director Royman! Please! It is…"
"…" Royman glanced once more at her, raising his brow, questioning. It was almost like he said: "Are you questioning my decision?"
It was more than enough to make the girl shut her mouth and look down remorsefully. She knows that glare too well to dare open her mouth once again.
"But it is not up to you, is it?" Gazef right away recognized this fact. Royman maybe was the guild's head, but surely, someone was his boss too; else, he would have already banned him.
"Maybe one of these so-called gods control and regulate the guild too…"
He would find it quite ironic if one of them was sitting in a dark room on a throne, giving orders to Royman like a loyal henchman.
"Not entirely, yes…" Royman gave a tired sight. It was visible he had enough of this and was too tired to really argue. "Albeit, I have a word in the matter, considering how things turned out, it will create more uproar if I ban you, rather than keeping you around. All in all, you gained quite an amount of fame in a short time, Zeff-san, a thing that currently brings more to the guild than the damage you caused. That's your only luck…"
The man's greed was evident, thinking with the mind of a true trader rather than of a person who was controlled by his emotions.
If a good brings more than he actually loses keeping it, then it is an investment worth holding on to despite the damage it causes in the meantime.
"In that light, and considering your accomplishments, I will make a recommendation to my superior to consider you a first-class adventurer. Of course, with this, you will be burdened with more duties, as well as more guild tax you need to pay…"
"Naturally…" Gazef almost rolled his eyes, expecting this stocky man had some ulterior motive.
"…Moreover, until the investigation in this matter is completed, your activity will be monitored even more strictly. Also, the reward you would receive for stopping that rampaging plant monster will be put on hold — recalculated according to the damage you caused in the Daedalus Street."
"That…!" Misha gasped audibly, paling right away.
Taking away the reward of an adventurer was a harsh punishment. The guild very rarely did so, knowing well how much uproar it earned amongst other adventurers.
Indeed, most adventurers were a greedy bunch of people who are less than forgiving if someone is trying to cut their reward. Most joining not out of heroic spirit but in the hope of easy money and fame.
In that case, the generous reward that Gazef would receive will be significantly cut.
Misha only hoped the man would do nothing reckless — considering how much money he needs to pay to the guild for his ongoing investigation after the items he wanted to find, it was a possibility.
"Although I know him as a calm person. Who knows what he will do if someone tries to take what he earned?"
Endanger someone's property or wealth, and soon you will know their ugly side.
"That's fine…"
"!" Misha's eyes widened, hearing Gazef's words.
"Until it is used for the restoration of the living place of those people who became homeless due to my recklessness, then I would gladly offer my reward for them. It is the least I can do."
"How noble of you…" Royman hummed apathetically. Still, Gazef felt a slight disgust in the man's tone.
"That's all. You can leave, Zeff-san. And once more, I ask you, for at least a few days, avoid trouble. It involves too much paperwork."
"I'll try my best…" after standing up; he bowed his head to Royman. "Royman-dono. Misha-san?"
"I…" Misha wanted to follow him, rebuke him, and even ask him for more detail about what really happened after they separated, only for Royman to raise his hand, stopping her.
"Misha, you remain here. I need to discuss a few more things with you."
"Ye-Yes." The poor girl looked like she was about to break down in tears; she had enough both from the Warrior Captain and from this whole day!
Too many things happened. Too many things had gone wrong in this supposed to be joyful day and event!
Monsterphilia is supposed to be a place where people enjoy themselves. And yet, now she had to bear the consequences for stuff she didn't do! Why the world always punishes her! First with paperwork! Now with this!
It was just not fair!
"I need to make it up to her later." Gazef really regretted bringing her trouble, but sometimes, things just went vastly different than one expects.
"I am too familiar with this feeling… unfortunately…"
Giving a sympathetic nod to his advisor, the warrior captain left the room, leaving the two alone.
...
"Haah! Finally…"
After leaving the room, Gazef thought; finally, he can get some breathing room.
Yet, as the door closed behind him, and he could find some relief from the intense questioning, a familiar figure greeted him.
"Yo!" Loki grinned, taking a seat not far from the door of the director. "Took ya' long enough!"
"Lady Loki?" Gazef was baffled, seeing the goddess of mischief sitting not far from the door. "May I ask what you are doing here? Are you waiting for me, perhaps?"
"Hmm, maybe…~" Loki patted her chin while looking up. It was apparent to the Warrior Captain she was just playing around.
"I see. And why would you look for me? If I may ask?"
"I don't know. Maybeee it has to da' something with yer performance today?" that grin this woman offered just made the man shiver. He definitely felt she was up to no good.
"That's possible…" Gazef already started to regret his today's actions. It brought too much unnecessary attention.
"Maybe I shouldn't have started my investigation. Maybe I should have simply let Freya do as she likes and ignore her when I spotted her passing the crowd."
People said he often stuck his nose where he shouldn't. If he were just to let this thing pass and didn't track Freya, maybe he wouldn't have raised any more unnecessary attention. Maybe things would have turned out differently. Perhaps then he didn't endanger Misha's position.
"No! Even then, she would have released those beasts, and maybe, I wouldn't be there to help those civilians and deal with that monster."
Maybe he could have helped out with the other rampaging monsters all across the town. Maybe not. Perhaps those three could have dealt with that plant creature even without his help, perhaps they can't, and it would have caused a bloodbath before anyone came to stop it. Maybe…
"Too many unknowns…"
Gazef was one man, not a god, not a devil, no one special to see the future or to change the past, neither did he possess the capability to divine what will happen. He can only draw conclusions through logic, connecting the dots and clues his environment provides.
"Oi! Are ya' listening?!" In the next moment, Loki leaned dangerously close, opening her line like eyes slightly, scanning him with those crimson orbs. "What's in yer' mind? Care to tell? Hmm?~"
"Ah, nothing, just pondered about what happened today."
"Fufufu! Indeed, many interesting things happened." Loki licked her lips, keeping her tongue out on the corner of her mouth mischievously.
"What did you ask again? Sorry, I was just deep in my thoughts."
"Hmm, I just said, that wa' AWESOME show ya' put on out there! Tell me! What technique did ya' use, I never saw something like tha'! Tha' feeling it gave… brrhhh! It made me shiver in my boots!" the goddess grabbed at her side, shuddering even remembering it.
"As I told you, it was simple Martial Arts, nothing else."
"Alrighty… keep yer' secrets." Loki winked, hardly believing it was simple Martial Arts.
After Zeff left her Familia's base, she asked around her children if they knew anything about this "Martial Art" nonsense. Most never heard of it; some said they are some fancy moves from the east.
Maybe she should ask Takemikazuchi, as she heard, he is an eastern god who fancies himself with his combat knowledge.
"Still, what I felt in that battle…"
It was completely different! It was like this man with his sheer will defied the very world! The very gods themselves!
Not like the activation of a Falna related ability that originated from gods. No! It made her skin and bones shiver unlike anything else!
"Not to mention…" her slightly opened eyes moved to the wrapped sword on Gazef's back. She can't help but even looking at it made her godly instinct scream "danger!"
"Since my days spent in Tenkai battling against other gods, I never felt anything similar…"
Except, it was different! It was alien! She needs to find out what it is! Something inside her skull can't let it pass; a strange scratching feeling will drive her mad!
"You awaited me here, just to ask me this?" Gazef raised his brow, hardly believing the woman wasted her time just for this.
"Pft! Of course not!" she patted his back, finding the man's back muscles strangely stiff, almost like she is patting metal fibers instead of simple muscles and flesh.
"Still not clear, then why? If you want me to join your Familia, my answer is still no. Sorry."
"Guhhh! What's wrong with my Familia!?"
"Haah…" Gazef just sighed, shaking his head, and left the goddess behind. He already told his reason. He will not repeat it. "Farewell, Lady Loki."
"Oi! Wait for me!" Loki, of course, followed after him, not willing to give up so easily.
Scene Change: Meanwhile, in the Tower of Babel:
The echoes of great battle flashed before his eyes!
He did his best! Yet he failed!
"Failure! Failure! You are a failure!"
"She will never love someone like you!"
He pushed himself to his limit! He used his strongest technique, but all it earned him was frustration and pain!
"You are weak!"
"How do you expect to protect anyone… to save anyone like this?"
"Trash!"
"And they call him the fastest…"
"Disgraceful!"
Numerous shadows looked down at him in his dreams, filled with contempt, ridicule, mocking him constantly!
"Shut up!" the man gritted his teeth, pushing the shadows away with his sheer will.
"Nii-san, Nii-san, he lost!"
"Indeed, Nii-san, how expected."
"But…"
"… what can we…"
"…expect…"
"…from a failure?" next, four short, but similar-looking figures appeared behind him. Sounding almost like they talked amongst themselves, knowing what the others think and will say, and following up with the appropriate sentence.
"OUT OF MY WAY, YOU LITTLE SHITS!" a silver spear appeared in his hand, answering to his command cut through all four of them at once! Yet, as he got rid of them, another shadow emerged, more towering than any other!
"I expected more from you…"
His tone calm and collected, more silent than any other voice in the background, yet, brought forth the power that made every other shout silent in comparison, more so, when he spoke, every voice snuffed out suddenly!
His body built like a stone wall, packed with muscles from tip to toe and sporting two swords on his back; even through the shadows, it was evident, he was the leading figure; every other shade gave way to him!
"WHAT DO YOU KNOW, OTTAR! I SAID SHUT UP! YOU HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS!"
He swung his spear, giving his all, only to be repelled by the shadow of the man, kicking him to the ground with a smooth move.
"Pathetic…"
"You will… not defeat me…" gathering his strength, he finally stood up, leaning against his weapon. Suddenly, his previous might started to leave him, breathing haphazard, pain coursing through his body. "You have no right to judge… trash! You can just go and die."
He spat on them! He cared not what they barked about!
He was better than them! He can take care of all of them!
It was only a slip-up! He will win next time!
He will get on his feet in no time and show them all!
"I told you, you should give up. You struggled, and where has it led? You were defeated. How shameful a display indeed…"
His eyes widened, turning his head to the side! That person came before his view! That monster! The human who curbed his pride and left scars not only on his body but his very soul!
He will have his revenge! He will prove to Freya his worth! He will wash away his shame with the blood of that man!
"DAMN YOU!"
He struggled and struggled, but no matter how hard he tried, how many of his strikes connected, he just can't win!
Every hit simply passed through the shadows, causing no damage! Meanwhile, he was getting injured more and more, his precious blood dripping on the ground intensely!
"STOP ALREADY! WHY!? WHY CAN'T YOU JUST FALL!?"
"This is pathetic.."
"Guahhh!" one more flash from the monster's sword, and his spear fell to pieces, exploding in his hands! His muscles and tendons cut, as many wounds opening on his body once again! At this stage, the most he can do is struggle against this seemingly invincible opponent.
"No matter… I will win! And you will fall, YOU TRASH!" he barely managed to stand, whole body trembling from the strain, yet, he mustered the last of his strength and grabbed the only intact piece of his spear — doing so clumsy and not agile like previous!
"I need to… push forth…!"
His vision already blurry, breathing haphazard, barely managing to remain conscious; this will be his last attack; he knew it! He will win or fall!
Only his love towards Freya pushed the fighter forth, fuelling his last strike! The last strike that lost all its elegance and power as his injured muscles can't keep up with his sheer will!
"I WILL NOT LOSE! FOR LADY FREYA!"
As he started his last desperate charge, giving his all, deep inside, he already knew it was for nothing!
His will and love towards Freya were here, but his body refused to comply! Or, is her love not enough to push him further anymore? Was it not enough to surpass his bodily limitations? Even he started to doubt himself.
"Hmm! How predictable!" 'Flash!'
The shadow simply stepped out of the way of his clumsy charge, raising his sword and bringing it down above his neck!
"Ah!"
The only thing he recognized was a flash of pain, then his head spinning in the air, rolling unnaturally on the ground. Seeing everything, yet unable to move! Witnessing his beheaded body fall on its knees, then falling on the side lifeless! His precious blood pouring from the hole remained in his neck.
"Nii-san lost? Nyaa! Quite ironic."
In the next moment, someone raised his head, looking deep into his eyes.
"Grrruahh…" He tried to say, "Anya?" but only blood dripped out from his mouth; he could not form sentences anymore. Not without vocal cords!
"Ah… poor Nii-san. Nyaa! How you have fallen. Poor, poor Nii-san!"
He recognized her right away! The girl who held his decapitated head sported similar cat ears as him, her brown slit eyes piercing the very darkness which covered her.
"No! Please, don't pity me! Noo! Anything but that! Anya, please don't!" his pleading found deaf ears as he glimpsed the pity in his sister's eyes.
It was hell! It was damnation he can't escape!
"Hmm! Nii-san is in bad shape! Nyaa! Oh! Look at that! It seems Lady Freya found someone interesting!"
Turning his head around, she hugged it close, pushing it between her breasts, and covering his mouth.
"I thought you were exciting. Maybe I made a mistake when I chose you. How boorish!"
The woman who came in his view was elegance and charm crystalized, even penetrating the infinite shadows trying to cover her, gazing down at him with those irresistible silverish eyes, carrying herself with otherworldly grace! Her very presence banished all shadows, only leaving her shining in the abyss.
"Noo! Lady Freya! Please don't leave me! I do anything!" his mouth can't move anymore, covered by the shadow of his sister. And what he saw in those silver orbs made his hell even more unbearable!
"Tell me, why would I need you when I have someone like him?"
The shadow of the "monster" materialized, and Freya immediately sneaked around him, hugging his bulging biceps, starting to caress his face amidst shadows.
"Unlike you, he can satisfy me…"
She smooched a passionate kiss. Then doing so again, and again, and again, starting to unbutton his pants next as she proceeded downward with her foreplay!
"Just accept it; you were not good enough!" his shadow grinned, looking down at Allen, filled with contempt and ridicule.
"NO! LADY FREYA! I WILL DO BETTER NEXT TIME! PLEASE… don't leave me… GET YOUR FILTHY HANDS OF HER! OR…!"
"Or what?" the shadow looked back at him, grinning as he grabbed Freya's bare breast, squeezing it violently, making the goddess moan in pleasure and pain.
"Ahhh!"
"You are powerless! You always were, Allen Fromel! Accept it; you were never good enough!"
The dream world started to melt away as his despair reached the peak, leaving him immobile in the darkness! Only leaving one sharp image to witness in the abyss, the scene as that man embraces Freya passionately, paired with the goddess' moans which reverberated in the infinite emptiness!
"No… No! NOOOOOO! Lady Freya, please!" This was hell, and he can't escape from it! "Don't leave me…"
…
"Guahhh!"
As the nightmare reached the peak, Allen suddenly jumped up from his bed, drenched from tip to toe by perspiration, hyperventilating, his heart throbbed in his throat.
"Shh, calm down, child." an infinitely gentle hand started to caress his messy black hair, scratching just behind his bandaged ears, the place that made him slightly purr as he calmed down. "Did you have a bad dream?"
Her fragrance hit his nose immediately! That hypnotizing fragrance that always made him forget all his problems. That scent he can't forget, no matter where he was or how much time passed.
"Goddess! I…!"
"Shh… It's alright." she continued to care about him, the back of his head resting on her lap. It was soft, better than any luxurious pillow!
"I failed… I am so sorry!" his eyes moistened, all his body ached, bandaged from tip to toe. Allen didn't know how long he slumbered; he only knew that nightmare was too long as it is!
He lost! He brought shame to the Freya Familia! Vana Freya, the fastest adventurer in the town, failed to uphold his promise, left in the dust by no one, defeated by a nameless monster!
"I-I understand if you want me gone…" it hurt him immensely, saying these words. Maybe his hardest confession. Yet, after such shame, the goddess would want him gone anyway.
She gave him a task, and he failed to uphold his promise. Moreover, he even endangered her in his recklessness and incompetence! There was no bigger shame for the man than this!
"Ahhh…!" he tried to get up, just to have his strength leave him right away, falling back to her lap.
'Bop!'
"Huh?" However, what happened the next moment made his eyes widen.
Instead of pushing him away in disgust, Freya gave him a gentle bop on his head, followed by a gentle, caring caress as she positioned his head back to her lap.
His blue eyes meet her silver orbs, glowing in a violet hue in the darkness.
"Ah, such a silly boy.~" as she gently brushed his hair, her bright smile brightened even this dark but luxurious room; it looked like her presence reached everywhere, illuminating the very abyss!
Indeed, he recognized Freya's room right away; even in this dark, it was hard to forget. He saw it too many times to forget; both the sight and the irresistible scent were embedded in his memories.
"You didn't fail. In fact, you exceeded my expectations." her giggle was childish yet sultry, giving a kiss on his forehead.
"Bu-But Lady Freya! I lost! I…"
"You did your best, didn't you, Allen?"
For a moment, his eyes widened, considering the question, then right away, he looked away, doubtful if he could do more in that situation.
"Ye-Yes…"
"In that case, you didn't fail. In fact, you exceeded my expectations. You did well, my child."
Her words were comforting; paired with the lap pillow she provided all along and her constant nurturing caress, Allen Fromel already felt rejuvenated.
Though he still lost — maybe he will never forgive himself. More importantly, he also considered his goddess perhaps said these comforting words out of pity.
"…"
"Don't blame yourself. It will do no good for you. Neither of us expected that man to be this tricky. Nor his might to exceed our expectations. Not even me…" indeed, even Freya was caught off guard when the Gulliver brothers brought Allen back, barely alive, heavily bleeding.
She even started to worry if her children can even survive the blood loss, blaming herself for her careless game. It would be such a shame if such a bright child died out of her own inattention.
"I was careless; I fought him. I should have known! I should have…"
"Now! Now!" 'Bop!' "What did I say?"
"…" Allen remained silent, looking away as more tears gathered in his eyes.
"He was fast, goddess. His strikes rattled my bones with each hit that connected. Every wound I caused was meaningless; it all healed in mere moments. No matter what I tried, he acclimatized! Tireless! He was a… a monster!"
"A monster, you say?" Freya's eyes once more began to glow. Be it out of excitement, lust, or both, or even out of an unknown reason, no one can say.
"Yes…" Allen gulped, shuddering for a moment, remembering their battle with the unknown fighter.
"I see…" patting his head, several tears rolled down on the man's face, remembering his defeat, immensely touched by the goddess's care — somewhat feeling unworthy to receive such care.
"Don't worry about him. You are safe. You are in good hands. Don't forget Allen, you belong to me, and nothing can change that. No matter defeat, you all remain my treasures."
Once more, she kissed him, this time on his lips.
"Now sleep. Heal. You need your strength. I will be here; you can rest on my chest."
Allen nodded, closing his eyes, his goddess' care sending him to dreamland. Yet, this time, his dream was filled with bliss and care.
"…"
For long moments Freya watched the boy fall asleep, only for her gaze to wander to the other inhabitant of the room, standing like that of a statue in the corner, ever vigilant, motionless, watching the two with his unbreakable stone gaze.
"Well, Ottar, what do you think?" she raised her brow elegantly, awaiting the man's answer.
Scene Change: Inn:
"…" she stared at him with her unbreakable gaze, forcing her line like eyes to be slightly open. Almost like a glare, never stopping, never faltering! The goddess of mischief faltered not in her attempt to break the man with her ceaseless stare, and finally bind him to her Familia!
"Isn't that…?"
"Lady Loki?"
"What is she doing here?"
"And with the new guy?"
Every gaze was nailed to the unlikely duo sitting at one of the tables.
Just why the famous goddess of the popular Familia visited, and above all an out of place like this? That was the question everyone tried to answer.
Certainly, an esteemed Familia like hers used to visit more well-known establishments and spend their coin there. Then why is she here?
Sitting almost in silence, only initiating the absolutely necessary conversation not to become too suspicious for the two, everyone around tried to eavesdrop.
Under all of this, Zeff enjoyed his meal, or, at least, tried to after his long day of saving people — an attempt which Loki's continuous stare seemingly hindered greatly.
"Could you please stop this?" Gazef asked, annoyed, lowering his cutlery.
"Nooo?~" the goddess of mischief asked naughty, rolling her eyes sarcastically.
"Haah! Just as expected…" once more, Gazef raised his fork, just to place it down, annoyed by the constant stare.
"Just tell me what you want." in the end, he gave in, sighing tiredly.
"Fufufufu! I knew ya' will break sooner o' later."
"You are enjoying this, aren't you?"
"Maybe…~"
Loki leaned back in her seat, placing her legs on the table leisurely, and folded her fingers behind her head. She looked exactly like a kid who ate her fill today and was prepared for a long nap.
"Aren't you afraid someone might slap you in the face one day?"
"Who would be tha' stupid to slap a god?" scoffed the goddess, skeptical. "Anyone hurts a god will earn a ticket to their domain after they kick tha' dust! Aren't ya' god tell ya' this? Wha' da ya' think, where ya' will go after ya' die?" Loki motioned upward. "To us! Up ther', we don't like people who hurt us."
"Hmm… I see. So there is some kind of eternal damnation."
"Well, call it whatever ya' want. Maybe I'm just messin with ya', and nothing happens if ya' slap me. Or maybe yes?" her tone turned from sarcastic to serious; it seems the goddess thoroughly enjoyed playing around with her victims.
"Care to try?~"
"Haah! I think I am not hungry anymore. I will return to my room. Good night to you, Lady Loki. Seek me out if you are willing to speak seriously, or you have something that interests me." Gazef stood up, placing some money on the table, and was about to leave, having enough of the goddess' teasing for this day.
"WAIT!" yet, in the last moment, Loki seemingly gave in, fearing she was let down after wasting so much time.
"Well…?" Gazef slowly turned to her, raising his brow.
"Geez! Ya' like mom! Always so grouchy and serious! Fine then! I will be serious this time!"
"…" wordless, Gazef sat back in his seat, awaiting what Loki wanted with folded arms.
"Tch! Fine! Ya' not fun! I want ya' to join my Familia. Nothing more, nothing less. But I guess yer' opinion didn't change eve' since I last asked, o' ya' did?"
"No. I still stand firm; I don't want to join your Familia." Why did she always have to ask this? He already said no; he doesn't want to join her group! How many times did he have to repeat himself? Is this some kind of game for her? Or she does this for some other higher purpose? No! She most likely just enjoyed annoying him!
"Just as I thought." Loki clicked her tongue, downing her beer. "Eww! So bitter! Definitely not Soma!"
She definitely spoke about some kind of alcohol, judging from how she said it right after downing that beer.
"In tha' case, ya' left me no other choice." she circled her index, pointing at Gazef while leaning forth. "Yer' little stunt today is seen by many people. Not to mention ya' handed Bete's ass ta' him that night. It already started ta' circulate rumors about' a warrior, a no-name newbie who just appeared in tha' city and beat up a first-class adventurer."
"It was him?"
"I knew he was familiar!"
"No way!" murmurs started to echo in the small inn, making Gazef look around nervously. Great, just what he needed, and when he found a place where people didn't ask questions and mostly left him alone. Now he needed to ask Misha for another place where he can reside and rest in peace.
"Many Familia were already seeking ya' back then, asking Mia about ya' all tha' time as I heard."
"You already told me this back then." Why must she repeat things? She's starting to sound like those bureaucrats back home.
"Hmm, just a little reminder about yer' situation, that's all…" Loki grabbed a piece of meat from Gazef's dish, starting to gnaw on it.
"You still haven't said why you are here? I guess it is not out of your general concern."
"Why do ya' think tha'? I am a goddess who genuinely cares about children."
"Surely, you do…" obviously, Gazef didn't believe her; this woman was too shady for that.
"What was tha'? You say I am not genuine with my intentions? Wha' more I need to do to believe me?"
"Hmph…"
"Now, I am offended!"
"…" Gazef said nothing to this but slowly slurped his drink.
"I see. In tha' case…" Loki sighed, lowering her head for a moment. "In tha' case, I would like ta' hire ya! That's it! Now are ya' happy!? Geesh! Making a goddess lay so low! Ya' really are the worst!"
"That's more like it." Gazef lowered his head with a satisfied smirk. "And what would you like to hire me for?"
"Can we discuss tha' somewhere else?" she looked around, bothered by the numerous people listening to them. "Kinda confidential. Don't want all tha' pesky carnivores to get tha' scent…"
"I think they already did."
"Dammit!" Loki cursed. It seems she miscalculated. Or did she? One can never know in the case of the goddess of trickery.
"Let's say I agree to be employed by you. I have a few clauses."
"Yeah! Yeah! Whatever! Can we get out ere'! I already have Goosebumps from this place! Not speaking ther' beer is horrible! Yuck!" Loki poured the remainder of the turbid drink on the ground, frowning as she watched it stream between the stone tiles.
"Now? You want to go now? It is already night. Can't we do it tomorrow or at a later time? My day was too long as it is. I would like to retreat and rest." Gazef used Martial Arts intensively today. The only thing he wants now is a good meal and sleep.
"What can I say? I am not a patient type. Besides, we have a lot better beds in Twilight Manor. I bet ya' the beds in this place all bumpy and hard."
"It is not that bad. I slept in a lot worse places before."
"Oh, care to elaborate?"
"Rather not…" Gazef chuckled, downing his drink, remembering how many times he was forced to sleep on the cold ground near a battlefield — taking a sitting position and hugging his weapon, his back against his comrade so the enemy would not accidentally backstab them.
"Damn! Ya' surely a secretive guy, aren't ya?" Loki clicked her tongue, not sure to be amused or annoyed as she was unable to get anything personal out from this man.
Now she understood why Freya wanted him; such secrets needed to be cracked or like a thorn in her side will be forever bothering her.
"That may be…"
"I am curious tho. Where a warrior like ya' hid so long? From what I saw, ya' are a First Class. And as I know, the only first classes are produced in Orario."
Gazef eyed Loki strange for a moment. He heard the phrase "First Class" from Royman but never really understood its true meaning.
"Maybe they are referring to being a good fighter? Or a high ranked adventurer?" he can only guess that much. Despite Misha explaining things to him, she never spoke much about adventurer ranking in this part of the world.
"Hmm, let's just say, I came from a very faraway place. And leave it like that. There, people like me are scarce, but not unheard of." Many stronger like him exist, he knew it well.
Compared to them, he was really nothing special.
"Far? How far ya' came exactly?" Loki inquired further, leaning forward, leaning on her palm like a kid who listened her elders tell a tale.
"Let's just say, this and that place seems like two completely different worlds, and that's it."
Indeed, from what he had seen, not only customs are different here, but people don't know stuff that is completely axiomatic where he came from — as well, he has no idea about many things that are completely self-evident there. It was obvious; he was very far from home.
"Guuh! Ya' doing this on purpose! Ya' just want to tease ol' me because I am curious!" Now Loki was pissed — even pouting! Why is this man playing around with her?
"Most likely doing it on purpose, to pay back my small pranks. Possibly he does. Then it is my fault? Dammit!" she clicked her tongue, frustrated. Who knew her little teasing would backfire on her this way?
"Possibly…" Gazef offered a smile, thoroughly enjoying the small tease. It was not only Loki who could play this game. "In any case. I will visit you in a few days so that we can discuss this deal of yours. I have a few things to arrange in the meantime."
Gazef stood up, prepared to leave for a new place to settle. Most of his gear was on him now, a few things he needs to collect from his room, but that's it. He may be tired, but he knows well that if he remains here today, tomorrow morning, this place will be swarmed by people who want something from him.
"Yeah… judging by how many people are eavesdropping on us just now, their first thing to do will be to spread the news about our conversation. People will come to investigate then, and after that, harass me…"
It was better to leave now and avoid them as much as possible. Information sometimes spread too fast for his taste.
"I gained too much attention by beating that kid a few days ago. And now this? This can't get any worse…"
"Wait!? Where are ya' going!? Just come over, then we can give ya' better accommodation than this, then we can right away discuss the deal tomorrow!"
"Goodbye, Lady Loki. Good night! I will see you later."
"At least escort me home, dammit! Ya' just leave a lady go home at night like this?! What if they kidnap or rape me!?"
Gazef stopped before the stairs, glancing back at the goddess. "Lady Loki, you yourself said, no sane person would dare to attack a god, or they might suffer the consequences in the afterlife. I think a mighty being such as you can protect herself. Besides, as I remember, your mansion is not that far from here, surely one of the gentlemen here is willing to escort you. AM I RIGHT? LADIES AND GENTLEMEN?" he shouted, and the crowd burst out in a laugh, many raising their tankards in agreement.
"YEAH!" came the cheer in unison in return.
"Guhhhh!" Loki's face went all red in rage and shame, on to burst, clenching her fists so hard her fingers went all white!
This is it! Now this man has done it! Now he incited her fighting spirit!
She thought she subsided that side of hers long ago! Now, the goddess of trickery, who was famous for her wild, warrior nature, returned!
She will get him whether he wants it, or not! That she swears!
Scene Change: The next day: Morning:
"E-Eina-san, please, don't be angry. I just…"
"DON'T BE ANGRY!? DON'T BE ANGRY!?" after a momentary burst of rage, the half-elf advisor calmed herself, starting to massage her temple, slightly exhausted and embarrassed after her outburst.
"How many times did I tell you, don't be reckless, Bell! Not only have you gone deeper than advised, now, as I heard, you recklessly fought a Silverback. A SILVERBACK!? Do you know how dangerous that thing is!?"
"I-I…" the boy gulped, immensely intimidated by his advisor.
He knew well, she just wanted him to be safe, survive to see the next day, but sometimes she really scared him.
"I am sorry. I didn't do it intentionally. I just… " The boy gulped, remembering the terrible creature, remembering the chase, and how that beast cornered them! How it almost killed him! "That thing just started to chase us — goddess and me — like it was incited to pursue us by some outer force! In the end, we were cornered. I had no choice. I just…! I just wanted her to survive, drawing that thing away. That's it! Please, forgive me!"
"I see…" Eina's expression softened, starting to put together the picture.
Reports indicated a newbie — Bell — defeated a Silverback that was above his level. Normally, defeating a monster above one's level was hardly possible; doing so, one either needs traps, planning, be extremely careful, skilled, or even lucky even to consider surviving.
"Haah! What to do with you…?" in the end, the half-elf advisor fondled her temple exhausted, trying to relieve her stress and figure out what to do with her troublemaker client.
"I-It helps if I apologize?" the white-haired boy really hoped it would be enough, as he had nothing else to offer aside from the cold jagamarukun remained from yesterday.
"No, but it is better than nothing. You are reckless, Bell. But since I didn't know the exact circumstances, I should also apologize for my rudeness. It's just…! I was worried. That's all. First, those monsters attack, then, when I return to the guild, I hear a boy with an uncanny resemblance to you defeated a Silverback. No exact details were disclosed."
"Ah! I see. I am sorry to make you worried, Eina-san."
"Haah! You're making my hair grow white, Bell-san. No matter, at least you are unharmed. Right? Tell me you are ok…?"
"Ah, I'll manage. I think…" Bell checked himself once more, looking for any damage the healers didn't find.
"That's what matters. Still, I can't say it enough times. Don't be reckless, Bell! An adventurer shouldn't adventure! Better safe than sorry. I don't want to read a report about your death."
"Umu! Umu!" albeit, the boy rapidly nodded, promising it will never happen again; Eina knows too well her days of worrying for the boy are far from over.
"Haah! What to do with this boy? So troublesome…"
"Nonetheless, thank you for visiting me and clearing things up. It is much better now."
"No problem." Bell smiled bright, nodding, accepting. It is the least he could do.
It was bad enough that Hestia forbids him from delving into the dungeon for at least a few days — ordering him to rest and recuperate. On top of this, his conscience wouldn't survive not letting Eina know he was alright and let her worry meaninglessly.
"If I may ask, Eina-san…"
"Hmm?"
"There was an adventurer called Zeff. Quite a strong-looking adventurer. Blackish hair and eyes. Just before the monster outbreak started, he said he wanted to check something out, and ever since, I don't know what happened with him. I worry he might get injured, worse, dead. I wanted to ask him something, but I can't find him. Could you find him for me?"
"Hmm…" Eina pondered, finding the name familiar — Too familiar for her taste. "One moment…"
After rummaging through her papers, her eyes squinted, more concerned than angry.
"Bell-san. Where did you meet this man?"
"Eh? I mean, he was the one who saved me from the Minotaur a few days ago. Also, we met in the Hostess of Fertility not long after that. Oh, and yesterday during the Monsterphilia. Unfortunately, after that, he disappeared. Right before the monster rampage started, and that Silverback started to pursue us. But I already told you about him as I remember."
"Hmm…" Eina started to ponder, her bespected eyes running through the report before her.
"I-Is something wrong, Eina-san? Has something happened to him?"
"No… I don't think so, Bell-san. Still, for the time being, I request you to avoid that man."
"Wh-Why? He saved me! He can't be that bad, is he?"
"That's the problem; I am not sure." She read the papers well. Also, she "accidentally" read this "Zeff" registration sheet when she passed Misha's table and tried to make it more bearable in her free time.
"I told her many times, keep her table and the papers organized! Her station is a mess! I wonder how she can even see through that chaos…!"
This Zeff appeared out of nowhere a few days ago, with no known registered Familia, no indication of his level or anything on the sheet — as she remembers. He is like a ghost in the system as she knows it. It can't be possible, yet, that's how she remembers seeing that paper.
"It can't be right. Nonetheless, reports indicate someone defeated Bete Loga a few days ago — a well-known level 5. And now this! This man disappeared just before the monster rampage started. Then reappearing and defeating a monster the members of Loki Familia struggled with. On top of this, saving citizens! This is too timely."
Eina didn't want to jump to a conclusion, as she always made her investigation before giving her opinion. Still, everything that happened recently paints this "Zeff" as a suspicious person in her eyes. A person she would rather keep Bell far away from — at least, until she made her investigation and found the truth.
"Now, as I think about it. It is like I met him back then. Yes, a person resembling his description brought back an injured girl from the dungeon…"
It was all chaotic, all random how he acted! It made no sense. He saves citizens and adventurers, but also causes trouble? Just what is he planning?
Eina needs to find out the reason behind his actions, not only for Bell but also for everyone's safety in the city.
She can't just let this unknown factor roam around unchecked!
"Bell. I need to investigate a few things. May I have a request from you?"
"Of course!" the boy gasped; just what Eina wanted from him?
"Please promise me, until I say otherwise, please, try to avoid this man. I fear he is up to no good. He might bring you trouble."
"Bu-But Eina-san! He is…!"
"Bell!" Eina placed her hand on the boy's shoulder, looking deep into his crimson eyes, making him blush intensely. "Please, promise me."
'Gulp!' "O-Ok. I'll do my best."
"That's all I ask." Eina nodded, smiling, hopeful the boy listens to her — if not any other time, but now!
Scene Change: Babel:
Meanwhile during all of this, on the trade floors of Babel…
"Hmm, where it is…?" Gazef was in trouble; this was the same shop he found those high-quality armor parts and that sword — for a relatively reasonable price.
Yet, now, no matter how much he rummaged through the wares, searching up and down, even looking in the darkest corner, he just can't find those marked parts.
"Haah! It seems I need to find armor from a different smith or see other shops. Maybe they have a few pieces." and when he hoped he could find the work of that mysterious smith, he had to be disappointed.
"Unfortunately, I hardly have time for that. I'm starting to run out of money. With the reward for defeating those plant things also cut, I need to delve into the dungeon once again soon." not to mention; he also needed to pay guild tax and cover the expenses of his investigation. "And let's not speak about the price of the world map. I almost forgot that. I need to visit Lady Toth soon; she must be worried about my sudden disappearance."
Of course, he also kept in mind Loki's offer, but she was the last of his worries at the moment.
"I can't help but feel that woman up to no good. She just has the same air as those fox nobles."
Albeit, not all nobles were the same, as there were loyal ones amongst them too — for example, Marquis Raeven — most simply played power games to weaken the kingdom and gain more influence.
"I was so blind not recognizing earlier the Marquis was the one who held together the nobles of the Royal Faction!" His only relief for this major blunder was the fact, he made amends to the man before charging into battle, apologizing for his years of cold treatment and distrust.
"Though, I am still clueless what this Loki wants? I wonder. Is she in league with Lady Freya? Or does she want something else? She is confusing. Maybe she is just playing the fool…?"
Unfortunately, he lacked the proper information and knowledge to figure it out by himself.
"Not even a week passed since I woke up in that dark chasm. I just don't know enough of this place or how these "gods" work to say anything for sure. I need some more time to make my decision, consider it well to accept her deal or not."
"ONLY THAT MUCH!?" in the next moment, a sharp voice echoed through the shop, making Gazef raise his head.
"Oi! Stop shouting! Be glad I am willing to buy your stuff! As I heard, no other people in the tower are willing to do it after your tantrums in their shop!"
"THEY ARE EXAGGERATING!"
The girl's voice was very harsh, inciting Gazef to investigate the situation, hiding behind the corner not to get involved.
"You see! You are shouting again! That's it! You are banned! Get out of my shop and take your crap with you!"
"Hmph! You people are unable to appreciate my art! Fine then! It is I who refuse to share my work with you! I BAN YOU FROM EVER SELLING MY WORKS!" she pointed at the man, taking a pose.
"HEY! I JUST BANNED YOU! YOU CAN'T BAN ME IN MY OWN SHOP!?"
"Hmph! I just did!" the petite girl pushed forth her barely bulging chest, standing proud before the counter she barely reached — wearing what seemed like a modified leather smith apron filled with different tools.
"Tch! Just get out of my shop, you pipsqueak, before I call the guards. And take your trash with you."
"Pipsqueak…? Trash…?" her left eye started to tick. This is it! The shopkeeper now has done it, seemingly even he recognized his grave error!
"Oh, no! Not again!" the man already knows it will not end well, preparing for the storm that is to come!
The girl started to take a big breath, indicated her patience running thin, and was on to blow her rage in his face!
"WHO ARE YOU CALLING A PIPSQUEAK WHO WOULD DROWN IN A SPOON OF WATER!? WHAT ARE YOU CALLING TRASH THAT IS NOT EVEN WORTH THE METAL IT IS FORGED FROM!?"
"Oi! I never said that!" the shopkeeper tried to defend himself, vehemently waving his hands before himself.
Great, now she starts again! This little ball of rage always causes him trouble. It was a pity, though; she was a splendid smith — only if she would stick to the regulations and keep her rage in check.
"BUT YOU THOUGHT ABOUT IT!" the small elf grabbed the man's shirt, pulling him close, glaring in his eyes uncomfortably close.
"Fine! Fine! I will buy them. But only for half what you want from them! Geez! Why do you always have to be so dramatic?" the shopkeeper's head already started to ache; the voice of this girl was that sharp.
"THAT'S UNACCEPTABLE!"
"Take it, or leave." he made a stand, even crossing his arms above his chest. Such a pipsqueak will not blackmail him in his own shop!
"Tch! Fine then!" It seems the girl didn't have much choice in the matter but to accept the deal.
After the man counted down the Valis for the wares, the girl left, mumbling indignantly, even using foul words a young damsel like her shouldn't know.
After she left, Gazef approached the counter, putting down the sword of his liking to the counter.
It was not as good as the previous one, but better than nothing, and had a reasonable price tag.
"Who was that?"
"A troublemaker. Don't even bother with her. Now, let's see what you collected here…"
Meanwhile, the shopkeeper inspected the sword Gazef put on his counter; the man himself inspected the gear in the box that the girl left here.
"Hmm, this…!" his eyes widened immediately, recognizing the symbols "G.G." on the equipment — as well as the similar design.
"She forged these?"
"Yeah, she was the one. She is a talented kid. As I remember, I told you about her before. She forged that armor and weapon you bought last time."
"Hmm…" That meant Gazef didn't need to search anymore. This put a smile on his face. Looking at him, the shopkeeper already knew he would not likely buy this sword.
"I guess, then you don't want to buy this anymore?"
"No, thank you. If you excuse me, I need to catch up with her."
"Right, just as I suspected. Haah! She always causes me trouble. She went left; go before you can't find her."
"Thank you! Can you store these for me if I for some reason can't find her?" the Warrior Captain pointed at the box of equipment.
"Sure…"
Gazef nodded, and just like that, left.
"Great, stupid little shit always causes me trouble." but it cannot be helped; she was always like that since he knows her. He felt this kid would have a great future before her — only if she could change her temper for the better and stick to the regulations.
"Fine then…"
The man just chuckled, shaking his head bittersweet, starting to pack back the equipment where it belongs.
…
She is barely fending for herself. She can hardly even buy food, not talking about the materials needed for her "art."
"Only this much, for all of my work? How disgraceful…"
The girl gritted her teeth; her skinny body barely dragged itself forward through the halls of Babel.
Most would have given up already, returning to their Familia and their old ways. Why is she doing this then? Why is she still pursuing her goal? Why did she bear with the constant mocking?
"No! I will not give up! Not until my dream is archived!"
She gritted her teeth, wiping her tears away.
"Hey! I was just looking for you!" In the next moment, she felt a hand land on her shoulder. A big hand, most likely belonging to a man! Her instinct screamed! Her experience dictated to take a defensive position immediately!
"Get your hands off me, creep!" immediately, she turned around, raising her thin arm — which bore a bulky smithing glove.
The gloves she wore had strange contraptions fixed on their side, one of them unfolded itself by just squeezing her fist, making it resemble a small crossbow.
She aimeded it right at the face of her "assaulter", and with just a click, it automatically loaded itself from the storage integrated inside those thick gloves.
"Don't have to be hasty; I just want to ask you a few things. That's all." Gazef raised his hand defensively, signing he means no harm, even making a step back to confirm his intentions are clear.
"Do it fast then!" She was unfriendly. But it was understandable; they were in a more desolate part of Babel where fewer people walked — now, strangely, outside of them, no people were around.
A man approaching a little girl like this understandably gave reason for being cautious in any part of the world.
"Maybe I should be more careful about my approach…" Gazef thought regretfully.
"I understand your suspicion. I only wanted to ask, did you make this?" Gazef removed his metal bracer, handing it to the girl. It was the few parts of his armor that were still usable after the events that happened yesterday.
The rest simply tore itself down from his body when he used his technique.
The parts he wore now were the only ones he managed to collect and make them somewhat usable since the previous day.
"Hmmm…" the girl inspected the weathered bracer, then looked at the man, measuring him from top to toe. No question about it; this was her work, as well the damaged armor parts he wore belong to her. She recognized them! Just a glance was enough to do so!
"Tch! Just what the hell did you do with my work? You barbarian!" she asked, annoyed, already glaring at the man.
This piece she recognized. Like the rest of what she forged and brought to sale, it was not her best work. Still, compared to being just a level 1 and having no Forge development skill — nor normal tools — her armors and weapons way surpassed others' work — if you asked her — and as such, could be sold for a much higher price than those greedy shopkeepers offer for them.
If — and that was an "if," — not the stinginess and blindness of others, and even stuckness of most of her Familia, she would become a famous smith long ago. A pioneer of her era who brought many new improvements in their profession!
But they refused to accept new things, saying: her ideas cost too much, and she should stick to the good old ways!
In that case, she was held back by her own era and people — and her lack of money.
"Traditionalist bastards! Just like back home!" she squeezed the weathered armor part harder, gritting her teeth in rage; even remembering this brought forth intense emotions and made her remember her home.
Gazef recognized her angry expression but didn't say anything about it; instead, he started to explain why he sought to find her.
"I am sorry for the state of this equipment. It is a long story of what happened, and I would not delve deeper into it here and now. But to make it short, they served me well while they lasted. And thus, I sought other pieces, and possibly, their maker to thank her for her great work."
"So, you say, you liked them?" the girl was caught off guard. In all actuality, no one had thanked her for her work before.
"Yes…"
"Hahh…!" she lowered her head, hanging her arms for a moment. "Fine then, I'll listen to what you want."
'Grrr!'
"Ugh!" she grabbed her stomach in the next moment, going full red after her stomach played the mating song of the whales.
"Are you hungry?"
"N-No…" she shuttered, embarrassed, trying to deny the obvious.
"Ok, but I am, and I think we could discuss things over a good meal. Don't you agree?"
"If you insist on it, fine!" she snarled defiantly, not opposing the slightest the idea of a good meal. Moreover, Gazef recognized her eyes filled with excitement when he mentioned the idea.
"Very well, do you know any good places around? I am not familiar with this tower that much."
"Follow me, but the check is on you. I am piss broke."
"As you wish."
With that, the girl led him to her favorite place in the tower, expecting a good meal.
Has the Warrior Captain finally found what he sought? Or, will he only earn disappointment with this little detour?
You will know in the next chapter!
