Child of the Plains – Shayona

Kitty leaned back and stretched. This month's bills were impossible. She had to decipher Sam's handwriting along with the man they hired whom did not work out. Jarod Mason had left her books in a shambles. She had suspected him of stealing money, and looking at these books proved that money was missing. He must have gotten away with at least two hundred and twelve dollars, which really put a pinch on her. She had money saved and in the bank, but still, he was a scoundrel. 'Thank God, I fired him when I did.' She thought to herself. "Two hundred and twelve dollars in three very long weeks." She said out loud.

"What's two hundred and twelve dollars?" Matt asked her from behind and scared her as she jumped in her seat. "I'm sorry Kitty, I knocked, I thought you heard me." He said smiling that beautiful smile at her, the one that was a bit crooked and said he was sorry, sort of.

"Now Cowboy, you know darn well when I do bookwork, I get so engrossed in it, I don't pay attention to what's going on around me." She said smiling up at him.

"You also don't pay attention to the time. You were supposed to meet Doc and I at Delmonico's twenty minutes ago for dinner." He said leaning on the desk as she swung around in her chair to see him.

"Is it that late already?" She said standing up and straightening her clothes. Matt stepped up to her standing right in front of her, just inches from her and she smiled up at him. He smiled down at her. Gently he pushed her up against the desk. "Now, Matt, you had you had your way with me three time this morning, haven't you had enough?" She said smiling at him as his hands began to lift her skirts up her thighs. "What if Sam comes in," She protested as his mouth tasted her throat. He lifted her up onto the edge of the desk and was grateful to find she had gone without her undergarments today. She wrapped her legs around his hips as she took hold of him and led him home. Matt groaned on first contact. He knew they were pressed for time, and he leaned into her.

"I'm sorry, I need…." He didn't finish what he was going to say, as Kitty urged him on by tightening her internal grip on him and she gasped as he moved deeper into her. "I'm sorry." He said as he began to pump vigorously into her.

"Shoooo, it's okay, my love." She said keeping up with him, by thrusting against his hips. She gasped as he went over the edge. Her cheeks were flushed and she was a bit breathless. Matt kissed her forehead and her cheek and then her mouth. This kiss was long and deep. Gently he pulled from her warmth and leaned over, opening the desk drawer, knowing that she had hidden her undergarments there, and had purposely been late for dinner because she wanted him just like this. He smiled at her as he took the bar towel from beneath her under garments and cleaned her up then helped her into her bloomers. He was very tentative towards her and she loved him more for that. She thought about him and his loving ministrations. He could be so tentative and loving and then he was a raging bull and she loved every mood he had shown her.

"I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to be so rough." He said standing up and looking down at his tiny woman.

Kitty smiled and reached up, to brush a dark curl from his forehead. "You didn't hurt me, Matt. I promise, you didn't hurt me." She said as he pulled her into a hug. "We better get moving or Doc will send Festus out looking for us." She said as he gently took her arm and lead her out of the office.

They walked closely together as they walked down along the sidewalk heading for Delmonicos. As they stepped up onto the sidewalk, a woman screamed as a horse ridden by a partially cloaked Indian, slowly headed into town. He seemed to be hiding something and he was barely staying the saddle. Matt took off and headed for the commotion as the townsfolk gathered around. The man slumped forward and he fell from the saddle, keeping his back turned protecting what he carried. Kitty headed towards them and began to push her way through the crowd. Matt knelt down as Festus stepped up to him and they gently pulled the blanket from him finding a small child of about three years old in the man's arms. Kitty stepped forward and saw the child and the man. Matt lifted the child into his arms. "Festus, will you take her up to Doc's office. Thad run over to Delmonicos and get Doc." He said as he began to pull the man up and into his arms. Kitty rushed behind Matt as he headed up the stairs with the man in his arms, carrying him to Doc's office. Within minutes, Doc and Thad came rushing into the office. Matt had placed the man on the bed and Kitty sat in the window seat holding the child who was still unconscious. She had a damp rag and was wiping the baby's face with it. Doc looked at the child quicly. "Get her into the other room and start wiping her down completely with cool water." Doc told Kitty who stood up and headed for the bedroom. She gently laid the baby on the bed and began with taking her moccasins off and then the dress. She lifts the baby up and pulls the covers down and covers her. She then goes over to the dresser and pours water into the basin and turns to walk back over to the child. She was startled to see the child staring at her with gold/brown eyes. Kitty felt a lump in her throat then smiled at the child. She sat on the edge of the bed, and took the rag and put it in the basin and then rinsed the excess water out and gently dabbed her forehead. "Shima?"

Kitty was shocked by the little girl talking to her. "Yes, Shima." She said.

Matt watched as Doc worked on the man. He had two bullet wounds in his back. One of which was in his lung and Doc knew it was impossible to reach, but he would try his best. "Who do you think would do this to him, and who is he?" Matt asked to no one in particular.

"By the looks of his clothing, Mathew, he's Navajo. They's a peaceable people, no idea who he is, tain't seen nor heard of this'in. And that littlin' they'd be a great deal of talk on the grapevine iffin' they was escapees from some yahoo reservation." Festus said watching Doc work on the unconscious man.

"This isn't going to be good, this bullet is too deep." He said looking into the wound. "Matt check on Kitty and the child, make sure they are okay." Doc said without looking up from the wound.

Matt walked over to the room and quietly opened the door. When he opened it, he heard kitty singing a song, but it wasn't in English, it was in Navajo. He pulled the door closed again. Then headed back towards Doc.

"Mathew, Thad and I are gonna go coral that appaloosa and make sure that everything is okay back at the jail." Festus said to him.

"Okay, thank you for your help." He said walking over to Doc. "Doc, can I ask you a question?" Matt asked him.

"Sure…sure." Doc said as he continued to try and get the bullet out. The man was unconscious and didn't feel a thing.

"Have you ever known Kitty to speak Navajo?" He asked him. This caused Doc to look up at him and he scratched his head.

"No, can't say that I have. Why do you ask?" Doc said going back to work on the bullet.

"She was singing a lullaby to the child at least I think it was, but I belive it was in Navajo." He said.

"I really don't know, Matt." Doc said without looking back up. Matt looked back up at the door. Then he just walked over to the door, looked back towards the bedroom door. He headed out of the office and down the stairs heading back towards the jail.
