"I…" A boy at the age of 7 years old was walking around the unkept lawn of his house. Not too far away that his drunk father would complain but far enough to get some fresh air, or at least that was the plan.

The boy was indeed thinking about the hard times of his current life. It was a sign that he was depressed and sadly most of the time but those thoughts were being kept interrupted. He didn't know if it was a good thing or not.

"…!"

"…" He tried to ignore the call, not from his father or mother but from someone he was trying to avoid.

"Nii-san!"

The strange words that kept coming out of a certain someone, surprised him time and time again since it was a word he never heard of before.

"Nii-san!"

Turning around, the boy found a little girl barely 5 years old currently calling out to him with a smile. Something he wonder if such a thing was possible.

"Nii-san!"

"Yes, I heard you the first time Mikoto. What is it?" The boy didn't stop and continued walking and the girl follows. He hopes she stop following where he was and give him some privacy.

"I just want to share something with you Nii-san. Besides, you always tried to hide from me." Her smile falters as her cheeks puffed up annoyed at the boy's response, still, she follows without losing speed.

"Well, I didn't ask to hound all day by a little girl like you, did I? So, just leave me alone."

The boy was annoyed too ever since the girl came into their life. He felt a little out of place since now he had to share almost everything with her, his parent's attention, the food given to him, and his room. Yes, because they were so poor and his father refused to use any more money. He even has to share his bed with the little girl. He didn't like the change.

"But you hate being alone." The girl responded with no hesitation as if it was a fact. It caught him off guard.

"No, I don't."

"Yes, you do."

"No, I don't."

"Yes, you do."

"No, I don't!"

"Yes, you do!"

Both were now shouting, bickering at each other faces and the boy didn't like her confident tone as if what she saying was true because he too was doubting himself.

*huff*

*huff*

Both are now out of breath after shouting at each stop to take some breather.

"…." Staring at each other, many thoughts went through the boy's head. How annoying the girl was as she always tried day after day to talk with him ever since she came to their home with his mother a few months ago. He hated how persistent she was.

"Nii-san."

"Shut up! And stop calling me that. My name is Severus, not that weird word!" The boy after his final annoyed remark storms off, far enough so that a little girl like her won't follow.

"…"

The boy finds himself on a tall tree with lots of branches and leaves, high enough that the girl wouldn't find him. It was a spot he usually used to sit in before she came into his life. A place where he could see people passing without them noticing him.

It was a place where he could sit comfortably since the branch was very even enough for an adult to sit and hang around for a while. The upper part of the tree was unusual as the leaves and branches didn't block the sky where he could watch the stars or wide blue sky peacefully.

"Mom! Mom! Let me sit on your shoulder too!"

"You want to do the same thing as Petunia?"

"Yeah, I'm already on dad's shoulder. So, Lily has to sit on mom's!"

"I don't think your mom is strong enough Lily."

"Not strong enough? Come, Lily, let me show your dad who's not strong enough."

"Yay!"

Afar, the boy saw a family having the time of their life. It was usual for him to see this kind of scene since only mostly families come to this side of the path.

Even though he has seen this kind of moment many times, the little boy always had the same wishful thinking that he could experience such a thing for himself.

If muggles could have such moments, why couldn't he too have one? The boy's thoughts were running wild as his magical abilities manifested at such times. Yes, he isn't an ordinary human too.

"…" Floating in his hand was an acorn. He used it to sometimes throw at families that come by, though it did not anything to help the sinking feeling of wanting inside his heart.

"Nii-san, don't!"

"Wa-!?" The boy's magic suddenly stops before it could launch to ruin the family walking by. The acorn drops due to the interruption. He was still a child and interruptions were very possible at his manifested level of magic, even if his control of good.

In stopping his magic and his surprise reaction, the boy also slips from his seat only to be caught with the hands of the little girl pulling with all her might.

"Hey! What did you stop m-!?"

*hug*

"…"

"…"

The boy after pulling himself up with the girl's help and after calming himself down was about to yell at her again only to be embraced by said girl. It left him, speechless, at the sudden action.

"Hey…. Why are you…?" He didn't know what to say, just moments ago she was normal and doing a lot of annoying things to him but here she was stopping him from his action only to hug him tightly.

"…" He could feel it, she was crying. He didn't hate her, even if she was the reason his parents were even more at each other. He knew she was just like him, a little child that got caught up in a broken family.

"Nii-san…"

The girl looks up at him with tears in her eyes, she was crying and making a sad expression at him. The boy left she was sad for him.

"Why are you crying?" He asked as he stares at the tears under her eyes feeling his heart stir a little.

"Because… you're crying."

"No, I'm not."

"Yes, you are."

"What are you…" He couldn't tell if she was just annoying to him again.

"…" The girl then reaches out her small hand onto his face before lightly brushing off the tears he was making. She saw right through him.

He realized he was indeed crying all this time while watching the family go by. His emotion must have emerged again and was aware until now.

"But still…. Why?"

"What are you saying? *sniff* We're family, that's why."

"Oh…" Yeah, he forgot. She was his little sister, but more complicated. It wasn't just his parents and him anymore. He now had a little sister.

The boy finally let his guard down in front of her and let her continue hugging him until both stop the tears flowing down their eyes.

After some time had gone by both quietly sat and watches the sunset around the horizon.

"…"

The two also were currently eating a handkerchief full of berries the girl had brought.

"It's tasty. Is this what you wanted to show me?"
"Mm-hm! I remember how you wanted to eat something sweet. So, I went and got some from the neighbor."

"The neighbor? You didn't." The boy turns to her and hopes she did not do what he thought she did.

The girl could feel the judging look he was making at her.

"No, I didn't steal it. In exchange for helping gather them, I got some in return. And that's what labor fee is Nii-san." The girl winks at him with a smart expression.

"…" The boy's sweat dropped and wonder why the little 5-year-old was not acting her age. He felt he was talking to someone older for some reason.

Looking up into the sky, the day was about to turn dark, and seeing the little girl falling asleep on his side.

The boy gave her a piggyback ride and jumps off the tree before slowly landing with his magic.

"Told you Nii-san… No one likes being alone… hehe." The girl on his back was sleep talking and it surprised him to see how relaxed she was on his back.

"Why do you keep calling me Nii-san? What does it even mean?"

The boy, Severus, after going home with his little sister went to his mother and asked what the word "Nii-san" mean after dropping off his sister in their shared room. To say, he was a little surprised at the meaning his mother gave him, and his impression of the girl rose even more during that single day.
