"Nii-san."
"…"
"Nii-san?"
"…"
"Nii-san!"
"Mikoto, ugh… let me sleep."
Mikoto was an early riser and gave herself the job of waking up the others, including her brother. She sat on his stomach since it was no problem due to her still short body.
"But you promise to play with me, don't you like playing with me?"
The boy groaned when looking at the innocent face her little sister always made to make him do things.
"I do, but running 10 miles in the morning is not playing. It's exercise."
"I know, but haven't you improved? You used to easily get out of breath."
The girl smirked, remembering when her older brother and her race always ended with her winning. There were two reasons for her doing such a thing; one was to make sure they were physically fit for anything especially since they were going to a place where many pretty much rely on magic and one was because it was her pride as a shinobi who could pretty much jump from tree to tree like monkeys.
"Not… funny." The boy gave her a blank expression, not finding it amusing to remember all those embarrassing moments.
"Come on Nii-san!" Mikoto jumps and lands beside the sleeping boy, jerking him to get up.
"*sigh*" The boy gave up and started getting off his bed. His sister's active energy was hard to ignore, especially since he promised her the other day.
"Have you done morning chores?"
"Yep."
"Making breakfast?"
"Mom and Dad already ate. I made pancakes."
"What about cleaning?"
"…"
"Not a spot left unclean."
The dark hair girl smiles brightly as she even smoothly scraps her finger on the wood helm of his bed. She was a mother before coming into this world, and with the added energy of a child, no dust could hide from her.
"You didn't use any magic?" The boy was slightly excited if her sister had finally awakened her magic powers to help herself clean the house. He wanted to show her so much about what he had learned but since she hasn't awakened them, their mother forbade him to teach her anything.
"Nope."
"Oh…" Slightly disappointed, the boy got over it. She was still young, and still have some chance before it was too.
"Besides, I don't like cheating. Even if I did awaken them, I won't use them on something simple like cleaning." She was a young girl again, the impossible dream of every midwife in her previous life. She wasn't going to waste her youth cheating on some simple chores.
"This girl…"
Severus has always felt a little bit smarter than the kids around his age who always do immature things. That was until his sister who keep blowing day after day his mind came into his life. She felt more grown up their most of the adults in town but to him, it wasn't a bad thing. Most important of all, she was the only one in the family who talked to him like normal families do and she always have his back. He couldn't wish for a better sibling. Though, she was a little more active than usual.
*pat*
"You don't have to do it all alone, I'm here too you know."
"…" Mikoto blinks, a little surprised but nods happily.
"So, from now on."
"hehe… From now on."
The two could only laugh and started singing the song from the carnival they had gone to before with smiles. Though the little girl had a good voice and control, it was not the same for his brother but the both of them still enjoy as two little children singing around happily in the morning. The boy wasn't that much interested in singing, but his sister was. He only sings to keep her smiling, which was the most important thing right now.
*Slap!*
"I never expect you to be that kind of person, Severus."
Severus Snape had a good morning. Waking as usual by the only family that cares and talks to him. Reading the intriguing old magical textbooks his mother kept lying around and spending the day with the girl he came to have a crush on.
With all the built-up confidence in him, he decided to tell Lily Evans, a girl he and his sister came to become friends with about the world of magic since he realized the girl was magical and wasn't aware he too had magical powers.
Displaying his magic firstly was a good move but his poor choice of words left him hanging by a thread in their friendship as the girl reacted very unpleasant to the words 'Witch' and 'Your sister is a muggle'.
"…" Lily left without turning back, she on the other hand had already had a bad day since morning, and Severus saying words that felt like an insult was the last straw in holding back her moody emotions.
"Lily-nee? What happen?"
On her way home, the girl encounters someone she adores and was also the little sister of the friend she just slapped. Seeing her innocent expression, the older girl didn't want to say much in fear that the younger girl might say something and in turn, she would do something she would regret like earlier.
"Oh, it's nothing."
"…" After her reply, a few seconds of dead silence occurred between them.
"Here, it's my hanky. You can use it." Breaking the ice between them, the little girl gave a sad smile, as she handed it to the older girl.
"Mikoto?" Lily was a little confused when she handed her a handkerchief and the one, the little girl kept on her at all times.
"It's okay to cry Lily-nee but it's bad to keep it in. So, used my hanky and cry as much as you want. You'll feel much better. Though, I usually hugged Nii-san when he cries."
Seeing the little girl talking normally to her despite showing her crying face to her, Lily couldn't help but smile bitterly. Deep down, she wishes her sister would've been understanding and kind at times like this for her.
*hug*
"Eh? Lily-nee?" Mikoto had planned to quickly go home after giving the older girl her hanky since she had gone out to the market for groceries, as she might be the only one in the house who was worried about everyone's daily food. But unfortunately, right now, she knew she was going to have to be a little late.
"I would like a hug too." Lily hugs the shorter girl with a deep exhale as if something was eating inside her mind and making her uncomfortable.
"Oh, okay."
For some reason, the hug from the little girl made her feel a little better. Enough to stop the waterworks. Lily then sat on a bench nearby with the little girl and tell her the things that were troubling her.
"My sister, Petunia. She's mad at me. You see, I just received a letter from Hogwarts about how I am accepted to enroll. Mom and dad were thrilled but Petunia… She…" Lily felt a little lump on her throat, finding it hard to talk about what had happened today.
"She wasn't too happy about it, wasn't she?"
"Ah… Yes," Lily nods and bit her lips remembering the fight she had with her sister this morning, "She and I, fought. It was terrible… I'd never heard such horrible words coming out of her mouth before. She called me, a f-freak…"
Lily's magic wasn't something newly recent in their family and Petunia had known for years. The latter was a little jealous at first but got over it since she and Lily were great sisters, rather at times the older girl stood up for Lily when rumours got around or when scold Lily to be careful showing it since it might cause her future some trouble. She was a good older sister despite the casual jealous glances. Until today.
"I'm not innocent either, I called her mean words too. Calling her jealous of my magic and her always wishing to be magical too. I also hurt her. *sniff*" She clearly remembered the tears falling down her sister's eyes and that made her guilty and terrible.
"…"
"?"
Mikoto rested her head on the older girl's lap and let her hair down everywhere, the older girl then proceeded to gently glide her hands on the little girl's soft hair. Lily always tried to touch her hair since it felt like touching the hair of a very fluffy dog but never got to do it a second time until now. It sort of calmed her down.
"And just earlier, I slap Severus. He called me a 'witch' and my sister 'muggle'. I know there must've been a reason but I didn't think about it and just hit him." Lily was very new to the magic world and hearing words that sound very ugly made her snap, Mikoto understands and just laid quietly on her lap. Letting her stroke her hair.
"I'm a horrible person, right? *drip*" The girl cried once more as she believes it was her fault for what happened to her sister to be so mad and for her friend Severus to be hit.
"…" Mikoto then gets up after hearing her out. She prepared herself to go home.
"…" Lily had guessed, she must have also made the little girl mad when she tell her that she hit his brother and felt even more terrible.
"Lily-nee, you're not a horrible person."
"huh." The red-haired girl was a little caught off surprised when Mikoto now standing in front of her with her always calm expression.
"And I don't believe there is someone who could be perfect either. So, what about magic and muggle? I haven't even awakened my magic and I might never too."
"What do you mean?"
"What I am saying is that we're still humans. It doesn't matter if you're someone with magic or not. What's important are those around us, the people who cared about us, and the people we care about. So, you shouldn't cry out here alone. Lily-nee, go home to your sister and never give up making up with her."
Mikoto is now shown a serious expression, which a child like her should be able to do. But she wasn't just a child, she had the soul of a woman who had lost too much and doesn't want to make the same mistake.
"If… I was ever in your shoes; I won't give up. Because if you do, you'll lose them forever."
Something deep in the dark hair girl's mind the words she said reflects the regrets of someone who doesn't want a mistake to be repeated.
Mikoto got up and run off with some tears trailing off before turning once more, "I'll DO SOMETHING ABOUT NII-SAN, SO DON'T GIVE UP, LILY-NEE!"
Seeing the little girl run off after such a loud declaration. Lily, was a little overwhelmed. She had not expected much from the little girl especially after squeezing her feelings out in front of her, she had thought the little girl might feel uncomfortable.
Turns out, the little girl was so much smarter than others give her credit. Lily grips her hand tightly and kept repeating the words of the little girl, "She's right, I can't give up,"
She felt a warm sensation in her heart and thus stood up. She then proceeded toward her house, towards her sister. She was not going to let something like a fight get in the way of her and her precious sister.
What the red-haired girl might not notice was the reason for her warm sensation was a line of the blue hue of transparent glow around her, barely visible. It was a sort of power that had calmed her and let her make a clear decision-making mind. It was a little magic that the little dark hair girl left on her while she was laying her head on her lap.
"Brat! Take out the trash!"
"Yes, dad."
Severus was currently not in a good mood and hearing his father's usual loud demanding tone only made things worse as he thought started to turn dark easily.
"…" Outside, after dumping the garbage bag in the trash bin, the boy stood and stare into space. His hand grazes the place where Lily slapped him. Though; it didn't hurt that much and yet when he saw her eyes tremble with tears something in him just felt out of place.
"Hm?"
"Nii-san!"
"Mikoto?" Severus finally heard the name only his sister would use and quickly spotted her sister rushing at incredible speed for a little girl like her.
"NII-SAN!"
*!*
What Severus didn't account for was the rushing little girl jumping towards him and ramming her head on his stomach making him push back with a comical expression of pain. His weird but cute little sister, that's what she was.
"What the bloody freaking!? Mikoto!" Severus still on the ground with his little sister who had just slammed into him still on him, shouts in annoyance.
"That hurt, you don't just do something like that!" He then looks at her with a mad expression.
"…" But the girl didn't feel any hint of guilt, her check puff and for some reason unknown to his brother she was the one who was angry and he was the culprit.
Severus always knew when her sister was angry, she would puff her cheek and glare at him. It wasn't the first time after all and every reason was his actual fault, somehow, she convinced him it was his fault every time too.
"…"
"*sigh* What did I do this time?" The boy gave up and asked what he did wrong. He knew she was a fair person and it was hard for him to argue back since she never does something like this without reason.
"This!" Mikoto points at his cheek, the place where Lily had slapped him.
"…" Severus immediately knew what she meant and want to talk back. That it wasn't his fault and that she did this when he just wants to share the new world they were going to experience together.
But… his little sister, Mikoto Snape. The girl who suddenly came into his life. A terrible life, and yet she did not complain, she stuck with him through their terrible family issues and was there for him. He won't admit it but she was someone he would listen to first before he acted.
"Your words hurt her, Lily-nee was crying."
"…" Severus look at her with a little guilt and he answer back, "But it was true, she's a witch and her sister is a muggle."
"!" Her glare intensified and he felt a slight goosebumps on his skin.
"Nii-san, you don't have any delicacy, you know." The girl now sighs with a pitying look.
"What are you talking about?" Putting his sister off of him, the boy felt a little offended at her words.
Right now, both siblings sat across from one another. The day was turning slowly into night while the sounds of wilderness creep around their house like a river.
"If you want a girl to like you back, you can't just call her and her sister rude names."
"Rude? They were just facts. Wait…" Severus started processing his little sister's words before his face felt a little hot-blooded, "W-What, I don't have a crush on L-Lily! Don't just say something like that!"
"I never say anything about crush or Lily-nee. So, the kind of girl you like is Lily-nee? I'll go tell her."
"Noo!" It was the fastest movement the boy has ever made as he grabbed his giggling sister and pushed her back down to sit. He felt a little embarrassed and glanced if anyone heard them.
"…"
"So, have you calmed down, Nii-san?"
"I guess…"
Mikoto leans back her small body on his older brother's legs, she knew he was a little on edge. She could only tease him to lighten his mood.
"You know Nii-san, would you still like me if I become a squib?"
"Don't say something like that. Of course, your magic will awaken."
Mikoto sighed, it was not the answer she wanted to hear from her brother. For the last two years living with him, she found out his short comes and strengths, mostly steam from their terrible life with their difficult parents. She felt sad for him but she can't stop loving him, because she knew no one would turn to him if she turned away.
"Then please, just apologize to Lily-nee. She's mine and your friend."
"I will, I forgot she was muggle born."
"And Petunia?"
"…."
"Nii-san!"
"She wasn't even there! I'll just apologize to Lily and… I'll mention it."
"I hope that doesn't come back to bite you."
"…" Severus, sometimes also wondered if his sister was a child. The words she said and her actions were a lot like some adults he had seen do. He could only sweat dropped at her last remark since he didn't understand it one bit. Still, it was thanks to his little sister, he was able to recover from today's events. He was glad she was here with him. Glad she became his sister and glad she was there for him.
"You know, I just receive my Hogwarts letter."
"Congratulation, Nii-san. I'm happy for you."
Severus was still a child and the idea of leaving this terrible life and going to a place where he could fully embrace his destiny was an amazing feeling. He couldn't help but talk about it again.
"hm?"
"Every night I lie in bed, the brightest color fills my head. A million dreams are keeping me awake!" Severus sang out the song his sister liked from the carnival, though he still needs to work on it. After hearing her sing constantly almost every night, he just went along with it.
"…"
"hehe…" Mikoto giggles again, she now knows her brother was not a singer.
"However big, however small, let me be a part of it all. Share with me, your dreams." The little girl got up and sang with her heart out to him.
The boy then takes his little sister's hand and started to guide her into a dance. A sort of crips waltz but they were just children having fun dancing together.
"You may be right, you maybe wrong, but say that you'll bring me along. To the world you see..." Her voice was loud and clear, she was hinting that she would like to go with him too and experience the dream even if he was right or wrong.
"To the world, we close my eyes to see, we close our eyes to see!"
The two were quite siblings, and both care for each other very much. They were a family as well as best friends. If either of them was to missing from the picture, the other would feel difficult.
After singing her favorite song, both head back inside and decided to think about what the next day was in store for them.
And done
Not sure when Muggle born or if half-bloods with a muggle parent got their Hogwarts letter, so I just went along with what I heard from others.
And yes, we did put the song 'A million dreams' from the greatest showman. Kind (Girl) loves the song.
