You think I'm gonna hate you now

'Cause you still don't know what I never said

~ I wish you would, TS

In life, you always have two choices. You have to choose one and let go of the other. You can't have both. You can never have both.

You might feel like taking the middle ground would work out to be the best option but all you're doing is postponing your decision. You have to choose one of the two available options. You can't run from it forever. In one way or the other, you have to make a choice.

Dawn shifted in her seat, watching the roof of her room silently as she was trying to make up her mind. Which choice did she want to take? Which path was the one she wanted to walk? She didn't know. Call him up and ask for help? Or suffer alone in silence? Both sounded equally bad. She couldn't choose between the devil and the deep sea.

Using a pillow to cover up her ears, she groaned as she kept twisting in her bed. This headache would be the death of her.

If only she could call Maya and ask for assistance. A part of her wanted to call her Mother but she didn't want to disturb and ruin her mom's vacation with something so insignificant. She was a strong girl, she can deal with it alone.

She will deal with it alone.

Her eyes felt as if they were on fire even though they were closed. The loud hammering in her head was showing no sign of slowing down and she groggily opened her eyes only to close it within moments. Everything was too bright for her taste.

'A nap should fix this,' She mentally consoled herself as she tried to hum a tune to fall asleep.

But nothing she did was making her feel any better.

'I wish someone was here to make me a cup of tea,' She whispered to herself, her mind going back to the days when she was with Ash. She would always be complaining about one thing or the other and he would always be the one taking care of her, no matter what.

'Or I can make myself a cup of tea,' She brushed off her invasive thoughts and tried getting up, a sharp pain shooting through her head, making her wince.

Once the wave was over, she slowly got up, shoving the loose strands of hair behind her ears. Thank God Oli was with Debbie. She couldn't have handled such a needy cat at the moment.

The sound of the doorbell echoed throughout the empty house and she halted in her steps, holding the wall near the kitchen for support. Groaning at the possibility of having an unwelcomed guest, she made her way towards the door.

Few hours earlier

"Yes Lyra," Dawn laughed as she pressed the loudspeaker option on her phone and placed it on the dressing table. Sitting down infront of it to brush her hair, she picked up a comb, gently running it through her hair.

"And can you believe it! She didn't even buy anything even though we went to like 3 different malls!"

Dawn laughed again, imagining the frustration her friend was going through,"Lyra, it's fine. I mean you know Rosa takes a lot of time to decide what she wants to buy. She might not have liked the collection."

"Yeah yeah," Lyra was heard groaning from her end,"But I was expecting her to buy something, right? We spend hours trying different dresses and she went home just with a bottle of white wine. Oh lord."

"Priorities Honey. Priorities."

"When I go to Viridian, I would visit you. It's been a long time since we met." Dawn could hear the excitement in her voice and she hummed in reply as she put her brush down, staring at her reflection. "I feel nauseated. Like, my head is spinning and I can't concentrate for too long. It hurts my eyes."

"You sound sick, Dane. Just skip work today."

"Maya took today off because she had to go visit her cousin. And I have a meeting I really have to attend. So, I can't skip work."

"Dawn-"

"Lyra, it is perfectly alright," Dawn got up and took the coat lying on the bed. Putting it on, she went back to her dresser to get her phone. "If I keep feeling sick, I'll go visit the doctor."

"We both know that it is not the right choice," Lyra let out another audible sigh,"But you're not going to listen, are you?"

"Calm down Momma," Dawn laughed it off,"The meeting is in the first half. I'll be back before noon."

"Aaaai, I saw a headline-"

Dawn groaned,"I am not interested in gossips Lyra. Come on."

"It was about you and Ash."

That caught Dawn's attention. "What did it say?"

"Same old love, rekindling of a highschool romance. Something of that sort."

Dawn let out a groan. The damn paparazzi. They must have been tailing her and snapped a picture of her and him together. And now they were back to their bullshit.

"Soooooo, is it rekindling of the highschool romance?"

Dawn rolled her eyes even though Lyra could not see her expression. "Definitely not. Absolutely not. No. Never."

"That's a lot of negatives."

"Because that's the ultimatum."

" Two negatives make a positive, Daaaane."

" Yeah, sure," Dawn let out a giggle,"As if that's ever gonna happen."

After chatting up a bit more, Dawn disconnected the call and shoved the phone into her pocket. Maybe rescheduling the meeting would be the better option but she didn't want to postpone it just because of a headache.

Making her way to the living room, she found Olivia lying still on the couch, her paws dangling from the edge. Dawn felt a wave of happiness rush over her and she sat down beside the fluffy cat and stroked its fur. The cat stretched a little in its sleep and Dawn let out a laugh, saying,"Come on Oli. Time to visit Debbie."

"Here's your coffee, Mam."

The voice broke Dawn out of her trance and she looked up, her eyes landing on a young brown haired man with a mug in his hand.

"Thank you, Stephan."

Stephan silently put it infront of her, mumbling a soft welcome under his breath and was about to excuse himself out when Dawn spoke up again.

"Stephan?"

"Yes, Mam?"

"Please, book me an uber to the hospital."

"Sure Mam. Anything else?"

"No. That will be all."

Dawn leaned back in her seat and picked up the coffee mug, inhaling the aroma. For some reason, it didn't smell like usual and Dawn closed her eyes, the exhaustion of the meeting catching up to her. The meeting lasted longer than her calculations and the headache was getting worse. She could feel the hammering sensation in her head increasing with each passing moment.

She should have taken Lyra's advice and skipped work. 'I have to pick up Oli too.' She groaned and put the mug down, the bitter taste of coffee lingering on her tongue. No one else in the office could make coffee as good as Maya.

"Mam, your uber-" Stephan stopped when he found Dawn resting her head on the desk. "Mam?"

Looking up, she nodded,"Yeah. I will probably not come back. Take care of everything here."

"Sure Mam."

Dawn slowly got up and for a moment she felt as if something had hit her on the head. She made her way to the uber waiting for her and got in, putting her head on the headrest. She could feel the cool leather seat against the arms and groaned again. Great. A fever on top of the headache.

Just fucking great.

"Give me the report of the patient, bed 313." Ash instructed as he entered his chamber. The nurse with him nodded and excused herself, probably going to fetch the file. He sat down in his seat and stretched a little, feeling the tension in his arms.

He had been in the hospital since morning and now, it was almost lunch time. His shift should end in a couple of hours and he could finally go home to his cat. The mere thought of going home to a feline who loved him as much as he did put a smile on his lips.

Yeah, Loki liked playing with the other cats but whenever they were alone, he would run to him whenever he needed attention. And the way he purred...gosh. Ash could never get enough of it.

He got up for his round to the indoor and took in a deep breath. Final task and then he could go home to his cat and eat some pizza.

The door to his room opened slightly and he watched as the white haired nurse, Katie, walked in with the file in her hands.

"Anything out of order?"

Katie went through the pages and shook her head,"No. Her condition is stabilized for the time being."

"Good."

He slowly walked out of the door, Katie following him right after. The halls were nearly empty today and a part of him was glad that it wasn't a rush hour. Out of the corner of his eyes, he saw a familiar shade of blue hair and his eyes instinctively turned and landed on the woman who looked so out of place in her teal suit.

'What is Dawn doing here?' He stopped in his tracks and turned to Katie,"Give me a minute."

As if something was forcing her, she turned in his direction and her eyes landed on him talking to Katie and she, for a moment, cursed herself. Even after all this years, her eyes could always make out where he was. Almost as if there was some force telling her brain to look for him in the crowd. Almost as if a part of her wanted to see his face in every crowd.

She turned back in time to not catch his gaze. Geez. That would be the worst. Wait. Why would it be the worst? Didn't she tell him that she was okay being friends? Wouldn't it actually be nice if he helped her out when she was this sick?

"Yo."

His greeting made her look up at him and she could see concern covering up his face. She could see him analysing the symptoms in his head and she put her hand up in defence as soon as he whispered her name.

"Dawn-"

"A little cold. With fever. That's all. I am fine."

Ash let out a sigh. "Your nose is all red and runny. And your cheeks are funny like a bloated apple. Obviously, you're fine."

"Mr Sarcasm," She pulled out her handkerchief and dabbed her nose furiously,"I am going to kill you if you don't shut up."

"Might be flu," Ash gave her a consoling smile,"Did you take your temperature? God your voice sounds so rough."

"No."

"Okay. You need someone to accompany you to the doctor?" Ash teased her,"Where is Maya?"

"On a break and I can go alone," Dawn rolled her eyes,"I am not a kid."

"Sure you're not," Ash gave her a grin. "Call me if you feel like you need someone. I will be in the premise, okay?"

"Yeah."

Dawn watched as he silently walked away. A part of her wanted him to stay but the more stuck up part of her wanted to do this alone. Yeah, she admitted that she was okay with being friends but she just couldn't ignore the slight pang which would make it's way into her heart everytime she looked at him.

Present time

The resonating sound of the doorbell was making the irritation in her pile up and she let out a deep sigh, making her way towards the door. Two options. She kept weighing the two options in her head. One was to ignore the bell and go back to the bed while the other was go open the door and give the person on the other side such a welcome that they would think twice before knocking again.

The former option sounded so comfortable but she decided against it. Moreover the sound of the doorbell ringing again and again was making her so damn irritated.

She groggily caught hold of the doorknob, feeling the cool metal against her fiery palm. She slowly unlocked the door and peeked out, cursing herself a moment after as she didn't check who was outside on the doorcam.

The sight of Ash holding up a pet carrier was something she was not expecting on seeing. "Huh?"

Ash raised his eyebrow in confusion. "You texted me-"

"No, I didn't."

Ash blinked. Huh? "Dawn, you did."

"No. You are lying."

He gave her a weird grin as he pulled out his phone,"You told me to bring Oli over. And you used words like urgent and please. Lol. See."

He held the phone in her direction and she squinted at the screen, trying to read the message. Oh damn. The number did belong to her. But, when did she even type that message? When did she even text him? She couldn't figure it out for the sake of it. She looked up at him and could see his smirk widening and turning into a grin and she rolled her eyes.

"I did call you before coming over," Ash shrugged,"Want me to leave you alone?"

"Get in." She moved away from the door, opening it up farther so he could walk in. "When did you call me?"

He walked in and put the carrier on the floor as he proceeded to take off his shoes. "Around half an hour ago. I was looking for you in the hospital after my round but didn't find you. Figured that you might have left."

"You would have found me if you weren't looking at that nurse all the time."

Her comment took him by surprise. "What?"

"Did I stutter?"

"No," Ash stopped momentarily to collect his thoughts,"What do you mean by that?"

She shrugged. "Nothing." She mentally cursed herself. Why would she even say that?

"Dawn-"

"I am going to bed. My brain is lagging."

Ash nodded, turning to look at Olivia who was now roaming around in her room. Loki followed Olivia's suit and Dawn stopped when she heard an unfamiliar meow.

"You brought the two of them? Why?"

"Because," Ash scratched the back of his head,"I figured that you were sick so I can take care of you if you needed it."

"I can manage," She breathed out. A part of her, a tiny, miniscule, stupid teenage part of her melted at his concerns. "I can manage."

"I know you can," He sat down on the floor, watching the two cats chasing each other throughout the hall,"You are strong Dawn. No doubts about that. But its absolutely okay to depend on others sometimes."

Maybe it was the fever taking over or the past emotions surfacing but she couldn't control the wave of nostalgia and hurt which hit her heart. And before she knew it, she blurted out,"I did depend on you before. Where did that leave me? Alone and brokenhearted."

"Hey-" He hastily got up, startling Dawn.

Dawn brushed it off with a shrug. "The food for the cats is in the cabinet near the sink. I am going to take a nap. I don't feel like standing."

"Okay."

"And don't open that door," Dawn pointed at the door leading to another section of the house,"It leads to the indoor pool and the cats might fall in."

"Okay."

He watched as she made her way towards a room, probably her bedroom. She always took the bedroom on the first floor and it was the first time he was witnessing that she was going in on a room on the ground floor.

To others, it wouldn't look like such a big deal but he knows her. She likes sitting on the balcony and looking outside. She likes sipping her Assam tea while leaning against the railing. She liked the way everything looked so little and insignificant from a height.

What parts of her changed when they weren't together? He knew for a fact that their break-up wasn't easy on either of them. He was waiting for her to reach out to him for weeks.

So wasn't the reverse true too? Wasn't she waiting for him to reach out to her, clear all the misunderstandings and make her believe that nothing actually changed?

Maybe Leaf was right. Maybe they both had baggage from the time when they were together. And she did agree to be friends with him again so didn't that mean she wanted to talk about the past and sort out the things too?

But nothing could be achieved if he just kept postponing their talk. Maybe there would never be a perfect time to bring up the past. Maybe the timing will always be against him. Maybe she will stop talking to him altogether. But- was this ever-present tension whenever they met worth addressing?

He knew one thing for sure. Unless and until they talked about where and why they went wrong, they would never truly become comfortable in each other's presence again.

Ash slowly walked up to her room, making sure not to make any noise. As soon as he opened the door a little to see if she was asleep, Olivia ran inside in such a hurry that he was surprised.

The poor man watched as the Queen cat jumped on the bed and meowed a little, walking over to where Dawn was. Dawn stirred a little and brought her hand out from the covers and ran her fingers through the cat's fur. Her eyes were closed and the way she was stroking was a little sloppy. Ash couldn't help but smile at the sight.

Even when she was sick and half asleep, she was petting her cat on pure instinct.

He walked away from the room and began looking for his own cat, whom he found sitting on the kitchen counter, looking all smug.

"You're not supposed to be there Loki," Ash laughed as he walked to his cat,"Come on buddy, call Oli so her Momma can rest."

A laugh escaped his lips when he found Loki stretching and lying down on the counter with a soft meow. His cat just ghosted him.

Ash found Oli making her way out of the room soon, walking with such grace that only cats could muster. He watched as she walked up to where the stairs was and lied down.

Ash couldn't help but laugh. These furballs could make the most uncomfortable places look like feather beds. He made his way into his chair and sat down, pulling out his phone to go through some social media. He couldn't just leave her alone, in this big house, when she was sick.

He slowly made her way into the room, for the second time and his mind doing flips with every step he took. A lot of scenarios were running through his head and he could see her blowing up on him on every single one of them. Taking a deep breath to brace himself for what was coming, he knocked on the the door, slowly pushing it open. "I'm coming in, Dawn."

"Hmm?"

He took a deep breath and walked in, sitting at the edge of her bed. Her small, thin frame wrapped up in blankets made her look more vulnerable and soft. For a moment, he forgot what he was here for. He stared up at the ceiling, noticing the various landscape paintings on the peach coloured walls.

"Did you take medicine?"

She slowly hummed again while being cocooned in the blankets and Ash could make out that she was drifting off to sleep. Maybe it was the fever talking. She had this habit of being brutally honest and communicative when she was sick. And by her words, he was sure that a part of her still resented him for what he had done.

Miette was just a friend. Yes, she was a little friendly and approachable but for the sake of God he couldn't figure out why Dawn wanted him to stay away from her. Dawn was okay when he hung out with Leaf, May and Misty so why would she even feel insecure about Miette? There was nothing to be insecured about, was there?

"I am sorry," He whispered,"But there really was nothing between Miette and I."

"Hmm."

"I mean, she was a common friend of my classmates in med school and you just can't ignore a single person when you hang out with a group now, can you?"

"Hmm."

"And you never-" Ash stopped his rants midsentence. "I thought you were being petty because I was making new friends, having fun, away from you."

"Hmm."

"And then you blew up on me just because she was hanging around in my room. I mean, nothing would have happened you know. I was in love with you and would never cheat on you. You know that."

The silence he got from Dawn was deafening. He kept waiting for her response but nothing came. He could feel his heart pounding in anticipation but a whole minute passed without her saying anything.

"Dawn-"

"As soon as she heard you and I were over," Dawn asked from under the sheets,"What did she do?"

Ash closed his eyes and lied down on the bed, beside her as he kept staring at the ceiling. "Came over with some booze and pizza." He couldn't see her expression but he didn't have to see her to know that she was lying with her eyes closed with a blank expression on her face. And behind that face was a devil which put satan to shame.

"And?"

"Tried to console me."

"How?"

"With pizza and drinks."

"Narrate the whole story."

It was such a simple command but the way she said it made shivers run down his spine. She didn't sound mad or stupid. She sounded hurt and betrayed. Ash could feel a lump grow in his throat as he remembered that. "Suggested that I was too good for you and that you were wasting my time. That I would move on and.."

"My problem was not with Miette," She let out a shaky sigh,"Whenever I made time to go visit you, she would hang out with us. Whenever I used to call you, she would be there. I trusted you but I never trusted her. What kind of person lingers around when two lovers are hanging out after such a long time?" Dawn bit her lip,"It is all in the past. Forget it."

"I am sorry."

"Why?" She turned around and came face to face with him, her fiery blue eyes burning a hole through his soul. "What are you sorry for?

"For hurting you."

"Not your fault," Dawn smiled but Ash knew how fake it was. "I mean, you knew I was worried about her and how insecure and clingy I am, yet you did that. My fault for being out of the line."

"Nothing happened between me and Miette. You had nothing to be insecure about." Ash defended himself but he knew whatever he would say would just sound like an excuse. But this time, he would defend whatever he and Dawn had at this moment. "You know what kind of person I am. I would never cheat on the person I'm going out with."

"You might be right but I don't care," Dawn could feel her eyes burning. "I mean, yeah."

"You do care. Otherwise you would not bring it up."

"You don't understand, Ash," Dawn stared deep into his eyes,"I am a difficult person. I know my flaws. I know what's the best course of action is but my ego is a lot bigger than my reasoning. You were busy with studies and new friends, I got that but-" She let out a deep breath,"But in that new life I couldn't see any 'us'. You will never understand how much I was waiting for you to call up and say we should start over again. But you never did."

"Neither did you." He breathed out,"I was waiting too you know. I believed that once you cool down, you will reach out but you did-"

She let out a sarcastic, dry laugh, cutting him off midsentence,"Because I thought that saving the relationship didn't mean that much to you than it meant to me. I was not going to beg on my knees for you. That's not me."

Ash nodded, letting out a sigh. She was right. But wasn't he right in his own regard too? "You never fully trusted me after I went behind your back and met up with your Dad, did you?"

All the memories and tears came crashing back to her. And with it, came back the anger she tried to suppress. "I will never forgive him for doing that. And you," She bit her quivering lips to control the emotions,"You knew how much I hated him. How much I… I believed that if there's someone out there who really gets me, it's you. And then you went behind my back and broke that trust into pieces."

"He is not a bad man at heart, Dawn," Ash wanted to pull the girl close and hold her in his arms to convey that he was there but he knew he had lost the right to do so. "He fucked up, that's true but, he wanted Hannah to be okay. He was desperate."

"So he had made the choice of hurting his one daughter to save the other," She could feel tears pooling in the crook of her eyes and wiped them away.

"He is only human," Ash closed his eyes, unable to keep his wet eyes from tearing up,"Humans fuck up. Humans try to make amends. You have to meet him halfway."

"Okay," She sat up clutching the bedsheet, staring straight into his eyes. Her sudden movement startled him and he watched as she took in a deep breath.

"So, he is human," She breathed out, her voice quivering,"He is allowed to make mistakes. You are allowed to make mistakes. You are allowed to hang out with anyone you want. But did I deserve all that? Did I deserve the long crying nights where I kept asking myself if I was even in the picture you were painting? Did I deserve the heartbreak and pain you left me with when you went behind my back and met up with my father? Did I deserve the uncertainty and anxiety I felt when you kept defending Miette instead of your girlfriend? I was counting hours for you to come back. You never did."

She could see the guilt in his eyes but the years worth of frustration was just pumping out of her. There were so many things she wanted to tell him but couldn't. And now, when he was actually infront of her, the words and tears just wouldn't stop. "Ash, I loved you so much. So fucking much. I flew to your college whenever I had time. Gave you everything I had, gave you my trust but you broke it, gave you all of me but you didn't even chase after me when I walked out after breaking up. I was sitting outside your door for hours, hoping, dreaming, dying for you to come out. But you didn't. You fucking didn't. I couldn't even go on any social media because I was terrified of coming across something that would remind me that you moved on. I am not an easy person to love but I believe that I loved you with all I had."

"I wanted to chase you but you," Ash sat up, clutching the bedsheets,"Your Dad needed help but you were so damn adamant about not doing anything for him. I was so mad because that was so low. You aren't that petty but whenever it comes to him, you stop thinking altogether. Dawn, I tried to regain your trust by doing whatever I could. And the fact that whenever I made time for you, you were busy with studies didn't help. You weren't the only one who thought that there was no 'us' because I felt the same thing too. You visited me whenever you had time. But I didn't have the liberty or resources to do the same, Dawn. You are a multimillionaire. I was just a boy from Pallet Town. I am still the same boy from Pallet Town."

Dawn blinked away her tears. Where did they go wrong? Which misstep made them like this? They couldn't keep themselves away from each other and now, she can't even look at him without feeling guilty and sad and alone.

"Why did that have to happen?" She let out a shaky breath. "I thought we were meant forever."

"Me too."

"And now-"

"I know."

"I am sorry. Shouldn't have brought this up."

"It's okay. We needed to talk about this one day or the other."

She hated him. She hated how much she had to go through because of him. And she hated how much he helped her to move on from her past. She hated how much she lost herself when she loved him.

But what she hated the most was how, even after all these years, she couldn't truly hate him.

When he came back in her life, by some exquisite happenstance, a part of her wished that she would actually get the closure she was looking for. Another part of her was terrified about the closure.

She hated how easily things fell back into place when she was with him. She didn't have to put on a show, she didn't have to please him, she could just be herself. She absolutely hated herself because a part of her was still hoping that he would come back to her, even after all these years.

Maybe it was longing. Maybe unresolved feelings from the past. Maybe hope which made her cling to him.

She wanted to let him go and she did.

Atleast she thought she did.

"I am sorry," Ash spoke up after a while,"If we would have talked 'bout this before, maybe this wouldn't have happened."

"Oh shut up," She rolled her eyes,"Knowing us, we would be quarreling about something else."

"Like the bedsheet thing?" He asked her, a smile curving up on his lips.

"Or your annoying habit of sleeping like a spread out toad."

"Or maybe how you talk in your sleep."

Dawn gasped. "That was just one time."

Ash shrugged,"Or maybe how you're obsessed with buying earrings."

Dawn was shooting daggers at him with her eyes. "How dare you!"

"You know that's not a lie," Ash laughed,"I have seen your collection. You have two ears. What are you going to do with so many pairs?!"

"Oh shut up," Dawn rolled her eyes.

"Okay, back to serious discussion," Ash sat up straight, watching as her smile weakened and she shifted uncomfortably in her seat. "What are we going to have for dinner?"

She blinked. "What?"

"I mean," Ash pointed at his watch. "It's 9 pm. Shouldn't we be having dinner right now? I'm hungry."

"Oh my god!" She jumped in her seat,"How is it 9 already! You came here around 6."

Ash laughed,"You fell asleep."

"I didn't feel like it," She stretched her arms,"Must have been dreaming and everything. Heard your voice and snapped back to reality, I guess."

"Oh really?" He wiggled his eyebrows,"So what do you think?"

She thought for a while. "Lets put everything that happened behind our back and start afresh?" She smiled on seeing him nod,"I mean, it was nobody's fault and at the same time, everyone's fault. A few bad experiences didn't make the whole relationship bad. I mean, I had fun with you. Not gonna lie."

"Yeah," Ash nodded in understanding. "Sorry for making you feel like that."

"Sorry for not keeping my head straight. I was just so...alone and I felt like you are replacing me, just like my Dad did."

"No!" He held her hand and squeezed it. The tears were now gone but he could still feel her warmth through her hands. "You're Dawn Berlitz. You are irreplaceable."

"So, you never dated Miette?"

Ash shook his head violently in denial. "No. Never."

Hearing him say that made Dawn take a big sigh of relief. "Did she confess to you?"

"Ahh," Ash rubbed the back of his neck, a gesture he did whenever he was embarrassed,"After our breakup I wasn't the easiest person to be around. So we used to talk but she never really asked me out. Sometimes, I think she was hinting at it though, not sure."

Dawn shook her head, amused,"Even if she was flirting with you, you wouldn't have known."

"Hey!" He pouted at the jab.

"I mean," She laughed,"You are pretty dense."

"Come on," He slapped the palm of his hand against his forehead. "Stop."

"Fine, fine," She laughed at his flushed face. She couldn't believe she was yelling at the top of his lungs at him a moment ago and now laughing at his adorable, embarrassed face.

"Cool!" He extended his hand, and she shook his. "To new beginnings."

"To new beginnings. And as a favour, I'll allow you to buy me dinner."

"You sly vixen!"
