Over the next few weeks after the Suárezs met the Riveras, Simon did his best to get to know them. Bridgette, Mauricio, and Consuela quickly got along with them, but Carlos was a harder nut to crack. Even if the only peer that keeps coming over was Jorge. It took several weeks for Carlos to tolerate being in the same area as Simon, and even longer to talk to the older man. Eventually, with a good heart to heart, Carlos accepted him. He, in good Carlos fashion, wasn't very friendly to Simon, but at least he began to recognize him as someone trustworthy.
The same can't be said for Simon's son, Jorge. He never liked Jorge, let alone trust him. He always do unwanted roughhouse with Carlos and always frame him for everything. Fortunately for Carlos, he had other friends. All mere mortal.
In the early days of his new school, Carlos earned friends with 5 students who were just as shunned and picked on by other children as he is. Their names were Liam, Iona, Cecilia, Alveraz, and Adelina. Carlos' closest friend was Liam and they inspire each other to take the path of uncertainty. These 5 children make Carlos' life splendid. Everything was going well for the Suárezs, until everything falls apart.
Five months later...
It was a lovely day in the month of May, and Carlos' and Consuela's other relatives came to visit, despite some had to stay behind in France or San Angel for other understandable reasons.
"Consuela!" Called Bridgette, putting the last batch of Macarons on the tray lined with wax paper. Consuela loved family visits and always helped her parents with the preparations for said family visits. The only problem was, after helping Bridgette putting them in the refrigerator for 3 months, Consuela seemed to have quickly lost interest and wandered off to do her own thing.
Bridgette really isn't surprised by all this. Consuela always had a habit of getting distracted by other things that caught her attention. They should have been done making other treats hours ago, but as it was, she still had about half the recipes to make left. Worse, she was running low on sugar and eggs for those other certain ingredients. "Consuela!" called Bridgette again as she went to the side of the house,"Where ever you run off too, come back here this instance, ma fille. We have more treats to finish up!" The frenchwoman paused and listened.
A cool breeze flown through the trees. She didn't hear the sound of any child footsteps coming her way, nor did she hear her daughter's voice calling out in response. What she thought she heard was sounded like snickering. Snickering from a force that can't be seen anywhere. It was the kind of sound nobody would want to hear in general, especially alone. She shooked her and took a few deep breaths before go look for her husband.
Surely he must've seen Consuela somewhere. She saw Consuela with Mauricio and Carlos with some other relatives, having a little chat. Bridgette sighed in relief and wrapped an arm around his shoulder. "Hey Mon amour, what're you and the enfants up to? Must be planning a prank on me", the woman joked.
"Prank? No mí amor, we're just-", Mauricio was cut off, when his sister in-law, Janice came running with a frightened face. Something was clearly wrong.
"Janice? What's wrong?" Mauricio asked in concern.
"There are 4 rogue, intimidating-looking dupes nearby! I think the want to cause trouble!" Janice replied in a hushed tone that's loud enough for The Suárez couple to hear. Their eyes grew wide with fear.
Mauricio quickly whispered in his wife's ear, "Bridgette, mi amor, listen to me! You need to take the children and run to the shed in the far north, the one farthest away from the main house".
"What about you?" His wife asked softly.
"Just take them and run! We'll be fine! Go on! To the shed! It's one that is hard for those big supes to get through", he responded with a stern hushed tone.
"But-"
"Now!"
Bridgette sighed. There was no point going back in forth with him, though she knew this situation is turning out to be scarey. So, she quickly took the children off and head to the shed, running.
Mauricio turned back to Janice, "Show me". They went, with another relative. One they got to the gate entrance, they saw two male family members in a pool of blood, both were Mauricio's brothers. However, one is alive.
"Mauricio?" Antonio, Mauricio's older brother groaned as he weakly looked up at him.
Mauricio and Bridgette's other two quickly went to him, "Antonio, you're awake! Where are those menacing strangers?" He asked in a hushed tone.
"Mau-Mauricio! It's a trap! Run!"
"No Antonio, I'm not-", he was cut off by one of his in-laws, who showed him the rogue supes behind him. They paused. Everything was still and silent. No one dared to move nor speak.
Soon, Mauricio quickly spoke. "Wait! Just hold on a moment! You don't have to do this! I swear we won't won't tell anyone about this. You can just... just keep killing other people around here if that's what you want. Mi familia y yo will make sure nobody comes to bother you you!" pleaded Mauricio, while trying to persuade the rogues.
"I've got amigos in high places in Miracle City. We're abandoning this place anyway, so anybody that are left behind are liable to be bandits, crooks, hate mongers, or other supes anyway. If you let us go, We can make the authorities look the other way! If it's something you're looking for, you can search in the house. There's a secret entrance and exit inside the house too. We promise!"
The rogues didn't respond, until the older and slightly wrinkled one with dark brown hair, supe spoke in a serious tone.
"Lo siento señor, we appreciate the offer, but no witnesses". The leader motioned his lackeys to attack and finish them off.
Back at the shed, Bridgette finally had her to children safely inside the shed, safe and out of sight.
"Whatever you do, do not make a sound! They will kill you if you-", her sentence was cut short by screams, abruptly loud, made her head snap towards the direction.
"Stay here!" She ran towards the direction the screams were coming. Once she got there, she saw chaos. Her heart dropped. Eighteen members of Bridgette's and Mauricio's family pinned down and ripped to pieces. Screaming, crying, begging for mercy, begging for help, some even trying to escape or fight back...All died choking on their own blood.
Louise (Bridgette's cousin) tackles one rogue supe, trying to protect his dear brother, until the rogues tore into him. Bridgette's 19-year-old niece Amelie, screams under a rogue's deadly grip while Bridgette's brother, Pierre, frantically pushes another supe off of himself. Pierre viciously tears into the supe in the neck with a sharp knife. Another supe clamps her hand around Pierre's neck and breaks it. Bridgette watched on in horror as the carnage took place.
She snapped out of her trance. Bridgette ran, stumbling in a panic. She had to make it back to the shed, she had to save her children, if nobody else! She wouldn't let them be slaughtered by these monsters, the awful supes! As she saw the shed 18 feet away from her, a male supe landed in front of her as if from a great leap, eyes tuscany from lid to lid save for an incandescent white ring around each slitted pupil. He had skin as the color of white powder and white dirty hair. He looked like a demon straight out of hell, especially with him covered in blood.
He gave a malicious smile. "What're you doing out here all alone, lady? You seem lost. Tell you what sweetcheeks, you give me what I want and I'll let you live free in one piece, how that sounds?" He asked.
Bridgette, enraged, spat at his face bitterly. "Never you putain de sale cafard qui devrait brûler dans le neuvième cercle de l'enfer!" She cursed, loudly.
The male rogue sneered, "Must be a "no" then". Before he could do anything, he was tackled by Bridgette. She was beyond rational thought.
She moved on pure rage, every action dictated by the savagery of her own emotions. Something tickled her mind, but she forced it back. "Get off me, you crazy wench!" the male shrieked. She punched him hard and fortunately for her, his body was as vulnerable as a mere mortal's body. She punched him hard, repeatedly on the face, until blood drew. She continued to punch him repeatedly, until he was no longer conscious nor seemingly breathing in his own pool of blood.
She got off him and huffed. "Stupid male. Betrayed by your own urges", she spat, coldly.
"Bridgette!", she heard her name called, and turned to the sound towards the shed. It was just Justice Jaguar, along with Cosmic Nefertiti, and Paloma Wing. The Frenchwoman sighed in relief. This was cut short when she was striked from behind. It was the older supe with brown hair.
"Foolish woman, your super friends will not save you", before Simon and his team can do anything, Carlos busted out the door. Justice Jaguar quickly held the boy back, not wanting to get hurt.
"Maman!" He called out tearfully as the old rogue slit Bridgette throat with her magline claws, she collapsed dead in her own blood. The rogue looked up at them. A wave of darkness lifted up older male and sent him roaring through the air, trailing wisps of purplish smoke behindihin, aimed straight for Simon and Carlos. He had no time to dodge or craft a counter attack.
Closing his eyes and shielding the boy against the wrathful face that filled his vision, he braced himself for the pain of other's attack. It was a pain that never came. A wet thud with a gurgling sound was heard. As he opened his eyes, he found Paloma Wing standing over the dying rogue, with a bloody sword in her hand. Pamola did her finishing blow to end the older rogue.
"Now he won't hurt anyone else", she looked up and warmly smiled at her teammate,"You alright?".
"S-sí".
Carlos broke free from Justice Jaguar's grip and ran towards his mother's dead body. He looked at her corpse and collapsed, crying. A supe killed his mother and prevented her from saving her too.
Ultimately it was all over, the police came and inspected the bloody scene. The Suárez siblings were outside on the front porch of their home. They realized they are only sole survivors of this massacre. Cuddled together in one blanket, comforting each other. Carlos suspected they would move soon, he thought as they watched the horizon. They thought of anything to keep from thinking about what they had seen, what they had lost.
Justice Jaguar appeared behind him, and reached out to comfort the children.
"Niños, por favor...listen to me-"
"NO. YOU'RE NOT NUESTRO VERDADERO PAPÁ! TE ODIAMOS! YOU'RE THE REASON OUR PARENTS ARE DEAD!"
Carlos ran off, tearfully to the nearest creek. Consuela got up while holding the blanket around her, but before she could leave, she gave Simon an apologetic look.
"Lo Siento, Señor Jaguar", and with that, She ran off to look for her brother. Simon sighed heavily, he wished he was there to save them earlier and maybe...they would've still been alive.
Carlos was sitting at the creek, weeping. Consuela was calling his name, but he didn't respond. Luckily, he was able to find him and we t to sit next him.
"Why didn't you answer me? I was worried that you got seriously hurt. Why were you being mean to Señor Justice Jaguar?"
Carlos snapped his head facing his sister, angrily, "Because they're vile, cruel, and never do anything right!" Consuela wrapped one arm around him with the blanket.
"What if there's some good ones?", Consuela asked. Carlos sighed,"There isn't, they're all the same".
"Well...maybe if you give some of them a chance-", Consuela was interrupted by her tearful older brother.
"No, Consuela! The last time I gave some supes a chance, I became miserable! Look where it got us! Look where it got our parents and the rest our familia! All of them are gone, dead, because those beasts tricked us! Those supes did this! It's all their fault!"
Consuela hugged her sobbing older brother close.
"It wasn't your fault big hermano. If anyone was to blame, it's those big mean supes. You were just trying to do the right thing", the 4-year-old reassured her brother.
Carlos' sobbing died down.
"D-doing the right thing? That's right...that's what our parents told us to do", he looked up at the sky as he wiped his tears away.
"Sí, they told us to do the right thing...why are you looking up at the cielo?" She replied and asked.
Carlos looked down and smiled, with some newfound determination.
"Because, all those supes will one day pay the price for making humanity suffer. We will make sure to make this world better than those supes could and without them too! Also, the two of us will always look out for each other and soon we'll be calling the shots! Now let's head back," There was an unmistakable tenacity gleaming in his eyes.
This puzzled Consuela, but brushed it off. Surely her brother won't have this mindset for long, he's just not thinking straight in his grief. He stood up and helped his sister get on her feet. They left the creek, holding each other in their arms.
This is the longest chapter I've ever made. Oh dear... Look like there's some deflection and a snap! He's turning into the Carlos we hate... Be careful, Consuela...
