Chapter 17: The Aftermath of a Julie..
Mildred appeared in Miss Cackle's office, falling to the ground in a bundle of tears. She can't believe Hecate just ditched her like that! She Can't believe that may be the last time she ever lays eyes on her..
"Millie!" Two Voices screamed at seeing her drop before them. Maud and Enid were by Mildreds side in a matter of moments, hugging her tight, though Mildred just looked down to the floor, weeping.
"Oh, Millie, we were so worried!" Maud said.
"Why didn't you come with us?" Enid Pleaded. They understood Mildreds Hero Complex, but it was sometimes too much even for them..
Another person knelt down before Mildred, aiming to raise her head to look at him. "Come on, Tadpole, You're safe now." Rowan-Webb said, wiping some tears away with his thumb. Unfortunately, they were falling faster than he could wipe them away.
"But Hecate isn't.." She spoke, her voice horse and shallow. She watched Mr Rowan-webbs face to look at her with confusion for a moment. She supposed, although she lives with hecate, the full depth of their relationship wasn't really known by the others. Infact, To Mildreds knowledge, there were only a few teachers who dared call her Hecate. Mr Rowan-webb wasn't really one of them.
"Oh, Tadpole.." He started before Miss Drill stormed in, Ethel in toe.
"Girls!" Miss Drill began to scold. "You should be in your rooms, The schools under full lock-down, Now is not the time to be wondering." Miss Drill went up the small stairs to grab a clipboard with every student's name on it.
"Sorry, Miss Drill.." Enid spoke. "But we were worried about Mildred!"
"She didn't come back with us, we even checked her apartment and she wasn't there!" Maud Joined in.
"Apartment?!" Enid Squealed.
"It's very true, Miss Drill. They came here to report her missing.. We've found her now.." Mr Rowan-Webb even took to defending the girls.
Miss Drill sighed. "You two, get back to your room now. Ethel, Take this to Miss Spellbinder. Algernon, Please take Mildred back to the staff quarters. I'm sure HB will be there soon.." Miss Drill passed the Clipboard to Ethel as she passed, on her way to do something official, Mildred was sure.
"Staff quarters?!" Ethel yelled out. "She's been staying in the staff quarters? Does she have a plush lovely room all to herself? I doubt it, given the influx in teachers.. So, who's she staying with?" Ethel pressed on.
Maud and Enid reluctantly released themselves from the crying Mildred. "I don't think that's any of your business!" Enid said, moving in closer to Ethel. "Can't you see tonights been a disaster as it is?"
"So, She's allowed to get cushy with the teachers, but I'm not even allowed to ask about it? I'll find out the truth, Mildred Hubble, You can be sure of that.." Ethel said before storming off, it wouldn't be the last they heard of that..
Maud and Enid looked at Mildred before leaving quietly. They'd never be able to fathom this feeling in Mildred. She'd destroyed the only family she had, and yet she'd been given a second chance. Now it is all gone again!
Mr Rowan-Webb tried to help Mildred up, but the poor girl couldn't stop the tears from flowing. She was worried and mornfull. Rightfully so.
"Now, You listen to me, Mildred." Rowan-webb started. "You and I both know that Miss Hardbroom does -not- tolerate Crying. For her sake, wipe your tears, Tadpole." He held his arm out for Mildred to take, she tentatively looped her arm with his. "I'm going to take you back to your Room, and you're going to stay put.. Know why?"
Mildred shook her head slightly, prompting him to continue as they walked. "Because It's your job to be there when she returns. And it's our job to make sure she returns." He explained, soft and caring. If Miss Cackle was the Grandma of Cackles, he was the Grandad.
They walked the rest of the way in silence, Mr Rowan-Webb dropping her off at her apartment before going off to aid the others.. It was a little after One by this point, way too late for any student to be up.. She knew however that she wouldn't be sleeping anytime soon. She wouldn't sleep until Hecate got home. She curled herself up on the couch.
The Apartment felt so empty without the others.. Just Mildred and the cats.. She sat there crying for what seemed like hours.. But Forty-Five minutes after she'd arrived, the door to the apartment opened. Mildred looked up to the door, rather sleepy.
In walked a slightly shaky handed Hecate, she closed the door behind her and looked over to Mildred. She looked a mess, Hair Frizzy, hat lost somewhere in the woods probably, the bottom of her skirt muddy and ripped.. Not to mention the blood smears on her face.
Mildred was left speechless, she was really here. In person. Her fear had come too, Hecate had gotten hurt. But she kept her promise and returned home to her. It suddenly hit Mildred. One of the last things she'd said to her Career was that she loved her.. She knew hecate want the most welcoming to any kind of positive emotion. Anyone with two eyes and a pair of ears could see that. If she hadnt said it in the heat of that moment, She would of panicked much sooner.
To her surprise, Hecate stood there and opened up her arms, allowing Mildred to run forward, jumping into her arms and holding her tight. Mildred had hugged Hecate on many occasions, It was normally pretty one sided. Hecate would pat her, and let her get on with it. On the odd occasion, Hecate would place her arm around her, normally if they were sitting. But it wasn't really a hug..
This however, was. Like Mildred, Hecate was holding on tight. Unwilling to remove the child from her grasp. After what felt like eternity, they pulled away from one another, Hecate held onto Mildreds Hands. It didn't slip Mildred that Miss Hardbroom was shaking. Not from the cold, this was a different type of shake.. She couldn't quite place it.. Maybe it had something to do with the blood on her face..
"You look ready to pass out, Mildred." Hecate eventurly spoke.
"Me?" Mildred asked. "What about you?" Mildred laughed slightly, it was a tiresome joke, but she was just so overjoyed that Hecate had indeed returned.
"Maybe we both need to get some sleep.." Hecate Suggested, Prompting Mildred to hold onto her hands even harder. "As per usual, Halloween is a half day, The Bell wont go off till Twelve. I'll be here when you wake." Hecate tried to comfort the child. Mildred could tell.
She nodded slightly, but her hands still held on. It was selfish. She could see that Hecate needed to lie down, otherwise the woman might just pass out! But she also didn't want to let her go either.
"Come on." Hecate stood tall, pulling Mildred along. Once inside Mildreds room, Hecate released her, Waving her hand, Mildreds clothing changed to her standard School Pjs. She noticed the pained look over Hecate's face as she did that, however.
Mildred peeled the bed cover back before sliping in, her eyes never leaving Hecate. The Hecate in question, perched on the side of the bed for a moment. Mildreds Eyes slowly started to close, even when she didnt want them too..
Hecate stood, turned off the light and pulled the door to. Not quite shut, just like her first night. Mildred wanted to call out, to ask her to stay.. But Sleep had overruled her worry. Soon she heard Pippa return, it seemed the whole family were back in mostly one piece.. Just the way she liked it.
