If Eda were to describe her day, it would be one long groan of frustration that extended from the moment she lost Marlow, to the end of class. Not only did she completely forget this was her and Raine's day to play hooky, but now she had to stay after school to tutor Tommy. The problem was, Tommy Toilin was nothing but trouble.
Eda was not sure how exactly he did it, but everything the boy touched just seemed to explode. Even the most experienced teachers had given up on the boy. Some even suggested just putting him permanently in the detention track.
Trudging her way down the cursed graffitied hallways, Eda made her way to vice-principal Bump's office. Eda had been in the small room too many times to count. If there was a medal for causing trouble in this school, Eda would have won it ten times over at this point. Nothing would prepare her for what she was about to experience, however.
Stepping into the room, Eda was surprised to see no sign of Bump. No. A note stood in his place. It read 'Dear Edalyn, Unfortunately, I had a last minute emergency I had to attend to. If you could please lock up the Scroll of Observance I was using and tell Tommy the tutoring is canceled for today. We will meet tomorrow. Sincerely Vice Principal Bump."
Folding the piece of paper, Eda slipped the note into her pocket and picked up the scroll. 'Was this what Bump was using before?' she wondered, opening up the piece of parchment. The scroll was an entire map of the Boiling Isles.
"If this is the thing, show me Lilith Clawthorne," Eda whispered to the scroll. The scroll obliged and showed a small dot on the Grudgby field. From the small window in the office, Eda could see the the map was telling the truth. Lilith was indeed on the field practicing a spell.
"Cool!" Eda smiled, "Show me. . ."
It was at this point Tommy came in, and immediately made his way to peer over Eda's shoulder. Eda jumped in surprise, not expecting Tommy to get so close to her.
"What's that?" Tommy smirked, his buck teeth prominently sticking out.
"Nothing," Eda attempted to hide the scroll behind her back.
"Aww. . ." Tommy whined, "Come on."
"Nope," Eda walked over to the case, "I told Bump I'd put this bad-boy away."
Tommy, scraggly as he was, was fast. He bolted in front of Eda and snatched the scroll right from her hands.
This, of course, was the worst decision the boy could have made, as Eda was skilled in a variety of magic, including plant magic. Summoning a vine, Eda went to grab the scroll back. The plant exploded in a mass of green goo. Next trick, Eda tried to summon the scroll, but Tommy held tight. With a frown, Eda ran up to Tommy, deciding to just yank the thing out of the boy's hands.
"No," Tommy growled, "I deserve a chance. No one ever gives me a chance."
"You're going to get us both in trouble," Eda whispered.
"Then just let me see," Tommy yanked at the scroll, but Eda yanked back.
This tug of war went on for several minutes before Eda grew tired of pulling on the treasure. Raising one foot, she kicked Tommy in the abdomen. She was not expecting, however, for a fireball to come flying out of his mouth, exploding on impact with the scroll. Eda had just enough time to put up a shield spell for the two of them as the room erupted into flames.
Bump, who had taken to having lunch outside in the courtyard, glanced up to see smoke coming from his office. Taking a bite out of his sandwich, he smiled. Stage two complete.
End of Part 1
Hey all. I hope you are enjoying my story. I wanted to let you know I'm not going to be able to update on a daily basis for a little while. Work-life gets super busy around this time of the year, and I need to sleep some. Don't worry, though. I have plans for part two already in the works. Keep your eyes peeled on this story. I'm just going to attach the two, so if you're on this one, expect it in about a week or two. Peace!~
