The first battle began at sunrise. The world gathered in the early hours of the morning in the stadium, many of whom complained about the hours set by the pokemon league. Anyone who sold coffee near the stadium made a nice profit that day. Slowly the stadium filled as the first rays of sunlight touched the horizon
Everyone around the island could barely function, except two people. They were two trainers, sitting on opposite sides of the field, tucked away from the murmurs of the crowd in small locker rooms. Lola had been planning strategy. She may have only one single type of pokemon mastered, but she knew how to use her pokemon's water powers in new and overwhelming ways. She earned the right to be called the water queen of cerulean.
Meanwhile, Delia had been up all night replaying moments in her head. Not just previous battle tapes she saw of Lola, but of specific memories, little bursts of time that printed onto her mind like they were carved in stone. One of them was when Lola had pushed her around in the shower.
She sat without any pokemon around her. Charmeleon would be trying to get her to focus, while Weepinbell would flex its cute leafy arms as if to say "lemme at 'em, Delia. I'll whip them back into their pokeballs". She chuckled at that, but immediately she saw Lola's face- how it laughed at her in front of those other girls. Delia felt herself crack the knuckles on each of her hands. She knew Lola's power, but she didn't care. Weepinbell would drag those fishes up to land and smack them around until they fainted. Then Charmeleon will take care of that Seel once and for all.
"Delia, it's time to battle."
She didn't have time to even fix her makeup. It didn't matter- she didn't even care that much anyway. The only people that sort of cared were Ray and Red. Where was that boy, anyway, she thought. She didn't see him last night. Maybe Ray saw him.
She didn't notice Ray race to his seat after oversleeping. It had been a rough night of looking for Red. He only hoped he was in the stands.
The announcements drowned out of Delia's head the moment she saw Lola. She waved to the crowd, then ran her finger across her throat. Delia knew what she meant- easy kill. She was making it too easy for the red-head to hate her, and that's just what was needed. Delia grinned menacingly and nodded to the referee as he turned to her. She wasn't sad anymore- she was angry, hungry for humiliation. She didn't care how much emotions got to her.
Ray noticed something immediately wrong with her. Delia moved like she was possessed by a Gastly or something. She saw her grab her pokeball and launch it into the air almost like a grenade. Out exploded white light and a large bulbous pokemon with two big, green leaves on the sides. As Weepinbell stretched, Lola tossed out her first pokemon, a cute white seal with a tiny horn on its head.
"TRAINERS! Let's BATTLE!"
Weepinbell used vines to propel itself towards Seel.
"Leech seed!" Seel was bombarded with tiny buds.
"Ice Beam!" The foe retaliated with a devastating ice beam that hit Weepinbell square in the face.
"DELIA!" Ray screamed, "What are you doing?!"
Weepinbell reeled back as the audience jeered the stupidity of the move. Still, Delia's trusty bulb sat up. It wasn't done yet.
"Razor leaf!" Delia's champion unleashed a barrage of leaves at Seel. It slumped back and got up slowly. She needed just one more hit.
Delia knew what to use.
"WEEPINBELL! VINE SPECIAL!"
They had trained for this when it's come down to the wire and all she had was one shot. Immediately the bulb wrapped itself in vines and barreled itself towards Seel.
It got closer to the struggling Seel. she could feel the vines smacking that little seal down.
"WATER GUN!"
Then the water pokemon took a deep breath and unleashed a jet of water so strong that it pushed Weepinbell away and sent it flying. The audience roared, and Delia felt time stop. Just for a moment, she saw her pokemon's best move be ripped apart by a stupid water gun. She saw it flying away in a tangle of vines, only to scream out any idea in her head.
"VINE WHIP!"
Her champion gathered its senses, grabbed a whip with a leaf and sent it straight towards Seel. Only for it to miss by inches. Delia almost cursed herself. Weepinbell crashed to the floor as the seeds leeched onto seel and sent some much-needed energy back.
"ICE BEAM, ONE MORE TIME!" Lola was screaming now, too.
The little seal aimed for Weepinbell one more time. Ice particles gathered on the horn. Weepinbell was too weak and slow to move. Unless...
The Ice Beam shot out at Delia's champion as she screamed: "USE YOUR VINES TO DODGE!"
The bulb pokemon slapped its vines on the ground and launched itself in the air, dodging the ice beam in time for Seel to succumb to the leeching seeds draining its health points.
"Seel is unable to battle! Weepinbell wins!"
Delia didn't smile, she just took a deep breath.
Then she heard something come from a speaker next to her console. She never noticed the spot where she could put down her pokeballs and talk to the opponent. That was new.
"Hey, so I gave you that one so that when you lost it won't be a complete wipeout. Your champion is dead next turn anyway."
She returned her seel and threw a pokeball into the moat surrounding the arena. Out popped an orange and white fish with a short horn and big eyes. A goldeen.
"Begin!"
It can move around the arena and attack from all sides, Delia thought. Weepinbell may not have a chance.
She wanted to call back Weepinbell but they exchanged a glance and agreed. To the end.
This could be the end. They'd go out fighting. They weren't here to make a fool out of anyone anymore. That last fight showed her what needed to be done; she needed to win.
