Pikachu launched itself forward as the referee finished his announcement. Electricity jolted forward, straight towards the psychic biped. It didn't see Kadabra's eyes glow. Suddenly the electricity shot away from the pokemon and curled back around towards Pikachu. The rodent outran the bolts and charged forwards.
Kadabra's left hand rose towards Pikachu, and it stopped in its tracks. It fultily wiggled and flailed its paws, to Ray's dropped jaw. His hand twitched as Kadabra flung his champion across the ring.
Pikachu gathered itself together in the corner, which would have been fine if it weren't for a purple beam coming directly for the yellow rodent's head. Pikachu flew backwards into the wall again after a direct hit from the Psychic. It froze before it even hit the ground.
"PIKACHU!"
Kadabra held it in the air as a red light shot out from Ray's pokeball, recalling his champion.
His stomach tightened and the ground felt a little softer under his feet. The Kadabra was too strong. He didn't have a chance. Of all the pokemon to pick, why didn't he have anything fast against a Kadabra? Maybe he could have looked for an Abra or something. A million regrets flooded his head. He was used to failure, or so he thought. He wished, just this once, that he could start the battle again. The audience grew silent, and his pokemon waited for his command. The pokemon he was going to send in just to get outclassed by that...thing.
It was hopeless. A sob welled up in his throat.
He turned away from the cameras and the lights and twisted his hat forward to hide his face.
He failed. He actually failed this whole thing. He thought he could change things, that he could do the impossible, but the only pokemon he had left were slower and weaker than Kadabra. He held one of his pokeballs in his hand, chosen at random, and tossed it onto the field.
He heard the screech, the ruffling of feathers, and the claws scratching the clay of the battlefield. Then the loud cries turned to coos as it nudged Ray's cap.
He looked up with teary eyes at his champion, an enormous bird that he remembered catching as a tiny Pidgey. It grew so fast over the past few months. He scratched the side of its head, right near the eye, where it chirped gleefully.
"You ready to take this sucker on?"
Pidgeot nodded its head.
Ray smiled through the tears.
"Then go. I'll give you the orders soon."
The massive bird hopped onto the battlefield and shot up into the air.
"Agility!"
As the bird's wings glowed with a grey energy, Kadabra's hand shot out a purple blast of psychic energy.
"SAND ATTACK!"
Pidgeot dove towards the ground and flapped its wings violently, bringing a cloud of sand barreling at Kadabra. Suddenly the opponent couldn't see Pidgeot.
"Now, RELAY!"
The bird pokemon attacked the ball of sand surrounding Kadabra with a fury of Quick Attacks. Each time Pidgeot dove in and came out on a different side of the opponent.
"WING ATTACK!"
At that moment, Pidgeot's wings glowed a bright orange. It dove in one more time.
Time slowed as the massive bird's glowing wings could be seen from inside the sand, only to come out the other side. The two trainers watched as Kadabra flew out with Pidgeot, tumbling across the floor and laying still. Meanwhile, Pidgeot hovered in the air awaiting any extra movements.
"Kadabra is down and unable to battle! Pidgeot wins, which means that Ray Ketchum is the winner!"
Ray's shoulders buckled and he fell to the floor. The world stopped, all sounds froze in midair. Sabrina's eyes went wide. The stadium collectively screamed "WHAT", but Ray didn't hear them. Trainer and pokemon glanced at each other. Pidgeot gleefully clapped its beak.
He saw his face on the billboards, where it read "WINNER" underneath.
He won...
He actually won...
How in the world did he do that?
