Prologue

It was warm yet breezy on that particular eventful evening where everything happened so swiftly. The full moon was as bright as daylight, and the sparkling lake water swayed and drifted off against the rocky beach.

It was almost as if everything went mute when Kuro Kagami watched her friend being dragged out of the water. Kuro could not move or react in any way, because everything she witnessed kept her from doing so.

She remembered her friend, wearing a small, pink bikini, stepping into the shallow end of the lake. She had planned on letting Kuro take cellphone photos of her, so she could impress someone dear to her with a beautiful, graceful appearance.

Kuro remembered how beautiful her friend looked in the moonlight. Her long blonde twintails blew with the wind like a princess. Her skin glistened as if she were a fairy. Then as she made her way to face the camera, the horror happened.

"Rin-Chan!" Mimi Yusa let out in terror. It only took her a few seconds to come to her senses and make a phone call. Calling the man that took care of her friend was the first person who came to Mimi's mind.

Kuro had only stood in one place; the place where she was taking the photos of her friend. Then, as her friend's guardian came into place, Kuro slowly shifted to see that paramedics had arrived as well.

Remembering her friend's trip and falling into the deep end of the lake put Kuro in a trance of guilty daydreaming. However, when she saw the crew enter the scene, attempting to save her friend from drowning, Kuro's next thought was simple. Why didn't I do anything to help?

The paramedics finally got the child out of the water, and carried her to shore. She was barely conscious until she got to land. Why didn't I help? Her friend's guardian wrapped her with a thick towel and embraced her as Mimi ran to the scene. I just watched her, and I did nothing.

Kuro didn't realize that only a moment later, her friend was inches away from her, and going for a hug. She was crying with fear, and Kuro could only hug her back and let her purple shaded eyes tear up. In seconds, she was balling with her friend and apologizing for not being there for her.

Even after two weeks, Rin was still in fear of the water. It was all she could do to only get a few feet away from it. However, she was too scared to get in. Swimming in the lake, visiting the waterpark, or any vacations to the sea would be too difficult.

The one thing Kuro could do to make up for lacking the accomplishment of saving her friend, was to promise not to go into the water so Rin would not feel left out. She loved Rin with all her heart and she would do anything for her friend, even if it meant to quit swimming.
