Chapter 01
Decent.
A woman in a witch's outfit flipped backwards, sliding to a stop. She gritted her teeth up at a large snake creature, the GilderSnake.
"Foolish child. I could swallow you whole!" The giant creature snarled at her.
"Do not underestimate me, Gildersnake, for I am the good witch Azura," She gestured to herself. "Warrior of peace," The wind howled as it blew into her hair. She then kneeled, holding her staff like a bazooka. "Now eat this, sucker!" She blasted a fireball from her staff and it hit the Gildersnake.
"No! My only weakness! Dying!" It cried out, landing on the ground with a thud.
"And that's the end," Luz Noceda had just finished reenacting a scene using an Azura doll and an actual live snake. She smiled at her mother, Camilla, and the principal of her school.
"The end of what?" Camilla asked in confusion.
"My book report." The snake reached out and bit at the doll's head. "I think I knocked it out of the park."
The principal sighed a bit. "Your book report is why you're here!" He then gestured outside of his office "Just look at the pandemonium you have caused."
Looking over the window in the door, Lux found her fellow student screaming and snakes slithering in students hair and being flung into the air. "Ooh," she gasped as if understanding something. "So that is where the backup snakes wound up."
Then her mother lifted to what looked like four or five firecrackers taped to a hollow wooden block. "What is this even meant to be for?" She questioned sternly."
""That was for the act three closer..." The girl admitted while sagging her shoulders.
"Mija," her mother walked up to her, bending down. "I love your creativity, but it's gotten out of hand. Do you remember why you were in the principal's office the last three times?"
Luz's gaze fell to the white tiled floor, nodding. "si mamá, Prometo más duro."
Her mother sighed in response. "We all love that you express yourself," Camilla spoke up, though the principal's glare suggested otherwise. "But if you can't learn to separate fantasy from reality, you may need to spend the summer here," She took out a pamphlet from her purse, holding it out.
Luz looked at the pamphlet. It read 'Reality Check Summer Camp. Think INSIDE the box.'
"Don't worry, Mom. I won't let you down," Luz stood up in determination. "No more weirdness!"
It was then that the snake decided to attack the principal, leading to the portly man to lay unconscious on the floor.
"That doesn't count, right?" Luz asked her mother with wide eyes.
As it had turned out, it had counted, and any reservations that Camilla had about sending her daughter to the camp melted away.
After school had ended.
Luz stood outside in disappointment at the bus stop in front of her house. Her mother came out of the house and took a deep breath."
"Oh! Oh, my baby!" She gave Luz a hug, it was not returned. "Hmm. Now, don't worry. Summer camp is only going to be for three months. You'll be so busy balancing checkbooks and learning to...appreciate public radio, the time will fly by."
"But I don't like any of that stuff," Luz pointed out. "I like editing anime clips to music and reading fantasy books with convoluted backstories," She took out a book from her favorite series, The Good Witch Azura.
"Mija, your fantasy world is holding you back," Camilla told her. "Do you have any friends? Real ones, not imagined or drawn or reptilian?" Those words hurt, but she realized that her mother had a point. "Summer camp is a chance to make some friends, but you have to try." Luz walked past them and stood in front of the trash can. "Can you do that?"
"Yes, Mom," Luz placed the book in the trash sadly.
Camilla's phone buzzed. "Oh, I gotta go to work," She kissed Luz on the side of her head several times. Text me when you get there. Cuidate mucho, mija. Que te vaya bien!" She walked away.
"Bye, Mom."
She looked up as her mom was walking off and Luz immediately dug into the trash can, but the book was gone. "Where is it? Where is it?!"
She heard an owl and looked up to a brown owl holding a bag, which had the book in it along with a few other items. Then it turned around and flew off.
"Tiny trash thief!"
Luz chased after him, The owl flew into the woods, and led her in. They reached an abandoned house, and she knew it was abandoned because it looked like it was falling apart. The leaves flew by ominously as the owl flew inside the house. She hesitated and looked up at the house, shivering a bit.
Luz growled in determination. She ran inside after the tiny owl.
The door closed behind her and a flash occurred from inside. A door with the makings of an owl and a yellow eye carved into it appeared into a tent. The door opened and the owl wobbled out of it. Luz following behind
"Stop adorably hopping away, you...huh?" Luz slowly stopped as it didn't look like a house around her , it would be darker. There were a lot of things around them, and it looked like it belonged to someone.
"Whoa. I thought I had a lot of weird stuff," Luz commented under her breath. "But this, this is impressive." She ducked back into the darkness as a new voice echoed inside.
"Finally, you're back," Luz failed to notice the nearby doll literally moving its arms around. Luz moved away from the flap to see a marketplace, and they could tell from the tents and stalls. In front of them was a woman with two tones of wild gray hair, pointy ears, and wearing a red dress along with brown boots. The owl was resting on the table in front of her, placing down the bag. "Now, let's see what we've got here."
The owl hooted and flew onto a staff. The woman turned it around, transforming into a headpiece made of wood. Luz gasped at this, wondering how that was even possible. The woman took the back and started looking through it, holding up a cellphone that seemed to be broken because it wasn't activated. "Garbage," She held up a wedding that specifically had a diamond on top. Then she held up a glowing gold chalice. "Garbage."
She gasped at the next item and placed something over her face. "Now, this..." She watched as the goofy eyes from the prop glasses fell down as they were connected to slinkys. Luz could see golden eyes. "This will make me rich."
Her claw hands with orange nails reached out to the bag, picking up Luz's book. "And this...uh, this'll make good kindling." She put it towards a candle, starting to burn it. Luz gasped sharply at this, rushing from her hiding place
"Excuse me. Sorry. That's mine. Thank you."
It flew into the woman's hand, and the woman was holding a key that had the exact same eye symbol from the door. "You're not going anywhere," The woman snarled, also having a single golden fang. Luz screamed
Luz turned ran underneath the tent and emerged out into the open. However...she was no longer home. She looked up ahead and gasped, skidding to a stop as her mouth was wide open.
Luz was looking up ahead to a city, and a few bone-like structures were surrounding it. A dragon flew over with a screech, and then got caught by a giant hand that rose from the water. She could see all kinds of creatures and beings and monsters. Some did look relatively human, but others looked like people from her book.
"Where…am I ?!" Luz gasped started to panic a little, glancing around.
"Oh, no, no, no, no. What's going on?" Luz backed away, seeing a fairy and screeching. "Oh, hello, little fairy. Are you going to tell me this is all a fantastical dream?"
"GIVE ME YOUR SKIN!" The fairy yelled into her face, revealing huge teeth. Luz smacking the tiny creature away.
"I- I am so dead!" She cried out as she ran in a random direction praying she wouldn't get killed by some horrid beast.
Then soon found herself treading thin air, going nowhere fast.
"You wish." A familiar voice said, looking above her, saw the strange tall lady from before.
"I'm so sorry," Luz hugged her knees while panicking. "I just wanted my book. If you're gonna eat my skin, just make it quick. Just do it now," She held out her arm.
"Eat you?" The woman asked in disbelief. "Why would I eat a potential customer?" Luz looked up and saw the sign 'Human Collectibles.' There were a bunch of things from their world like clocks, hats, toys, lamps, and certificates. She held up a croc shoe. "Can I offer you a human foot filled with holes?" Then she held up a bar of soap. "A bar of green human candy? Oh, oh," She then held up a tiny portable TV, and Luz could see her reflection in it. "How about this black shadowbox that reflects only sadness?"
"Wait...that's why you were chasing me ? To buy a product?" Luz asked, then turned her attention to the television set.
"That's not all it can do," Luz continued, jumping down from her chair she had been pushed into . "Here, let me see it," She took the TV and looked towards the human candy pile. She took the batteries and placed them inside. She closed the panel and then turned it on, revealing an 80s music video. "Voila."
The sound of the TV got people's attention. "Huh?"
"What's that?"
"The sound, it's so alluring..." The creatures gathered around it and watched the video, someone holding up some money.
"I'll pay 40 snails for the screaming box!"
"I'll give you 100," A bat creature bided next.
"Can I eat the tiny person inside?"
They all started shouting higher and higher numbers, the woman glancing towards the girl. "What did you say your name was?" She asked, impressed by their knowledge.
"I'm Luz. Luz Noceda."
"Well, Luz, that was pretty clever and surprisingly informative," The woman stated while taking money. "For a human."
"That's kind of a weird thing for another human to say," Luz raised a brow with a smile.
"Oh, dear child..." The woman ripped off her bandana, revealing elf-like ears. "I'm not like you." She then stood onto the table. "I'm Eda the Owl Lady, the most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles."
"A witch?" Luz asked in shock.
"I am a respected, feared-"
"Busted!" Someone smashed the TV with his bare hand. The crowd ran off from the stall in fear.
"Run! It's a guard!"
Luz fellon the floor, having been surprised by the guard's sudden appearance
. Eda jumped down from the table to face him. "Eda the Owl Lady," he held up a wanted poster of Eda and a small dog-like creature with a horned skull that had one of the horns broken, as well as a red collar around its neck and a gold name tag. "You are wanted for misuse of magic and demonic misdemeanors."
"Whoa!" Luz gasped as the two peeked over the table. "Witch criminal."
"You are hereby ordered to come with me to the Conformatorium," The guard grabbed Eda's arm and she snatched it back.
"Would you guys quit following me around? I haven't done squat," Eda denied, crossing her arms.
"And you're coming too," The guard grabbed Luz's cat hoodie. "For fraternizing with a criminal."
"Wh-what? That's not cool!" Luz hugged her knees in fear again.
"Oh, all right, all right, you win," Eda held up her hands in defense. "Just let me get my stuff," She bent down, grabbed her staff, and smacked the guard in the face. This caused him to let go of Luz and he landed on his back. Eda spun her staff and tapped it against the ground.
Luz grabbed her book from the ground.
"Whoops," Eda reached behind her ear. "Can't forget this," She pulled out the key and pressed on the eye. The suitcase floated over and they watched as everything shrunk down into a sack. She put it around her staff.
"Follow me, human!" She called out, running past them.
Because she didn't have much of a choice, they rushed after her. "This is crazy. If I die here, Mom's gonna kill me!" Luz stammered to herself glanced backwards towards the pursuing guards… "eep" she squeals as a spear flies overhead.
Eda just scoffed at the young girl's worries. "I won't let 'em hurt you. Humans like you are much more valuable to me alive than dead."
"Say what-" though before luz could complete her response,
Eda hooked an arm around her , jumping and lifting her staff above her head. they jumped onto the staff, the headpiece growing wings and taking off like a flying broom.
"Waaaah!" Luz screamed at dangling in mid-air, trying her best to pull herself up onto the broom.
Though her grip failed once they were over a thick forest having flown some time, Liz lost grip over the broom and started to fall.
Eda gave chase, however as soon as got close to the free falling teen to reach out for her something would happen to get outside of range to reach her.
Soon Luz and her book were among the branches with a gust of wind blowing Eda away towards her home, not giving her a chance to enter the forest herself.
Luz was then stopped mid fall before reaching the ground, she found herself surrounded by darkness, and an eerie silence. Little light penetrated the canopy above.
What little light that did, spotlighted a dark ground filled with roots. The good witch Azura book in her arms quickly became her only comfort.
Alone and feeling helplessly lost, Liz fell to the ground in fetal posture, no longer knowing what to do.
