A is for assault

It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining and the temperature rising.

Not that those things made Danny particularly happy.

No, it was the presence of his little girt Grace.

He'd got to spent the entire week with her and they had decided to end a perfect week on the beach.

Rachel and Stan had left for the mainland but Grace had asked her mother if she could stay with her father.

Since Danny and Rachel weren't exactly on the best of terms, it had surprised him that she had allowed it.

'Monkey, I'm gonna go back to our places are you coming?' He asked her, knowing fully well that she would rather stay in the ocean.

'Can I swim some more?'

Danny smiled to himself. I knew it.

'Sure Monkey, but make sure you can keep touching the ocean floor.'

'Yes Danno, I know.' She reassures her father.

She does not know why, but she knows that her Danno is not a big fan of the ocean.

All the more she appreciates him for playing withe her in said ocean for so long as he did.

Danny gives her a quick kiss on her head and starts walking back towards the beach.

As soon as he reaches their towels he starts drying himself off the best he can.

Vaguely aware of the appreciative stares he's getting from his neighbor but dismissing them as he's not interested.

From his seat he can easily spot Grace and keep an eye on her.

He smiles when he sees that she already made a new friend.

That certainly didn't take long!

'He haole.' he hears a deep voice to his left say.

Danny is used to being addressed as haole but this time it's different.

Normally it's stated as a matter of fact.

Now though he can hear a disgust laying in the word.

He forces his face from his daughter to look at the man addressing him.

'Can I help you?'

'Yeah as matter of fact you can.'

The man crosses his arms and gives Danny a disgusted look.

'Go back to the mainland, we don't want or need haole's like you here.'

'Is that so?' He asks.

'That's so, so get lost this is your one and only warning.'

With that the man walks away.

Danny frowns, normally such things wouldn't bother him but he had Grace with him.

'Don't let Kahiau bother you, he's all bark no bite.' Comes the voice of his neighbor.

Danny looks at her with his brow raised.

'You sure about that?'

'Yeah, he does it all the time but never actually does anything.' She smiles seductively at him.

'You come here that often?'

'Every day, if you want I can show you and your daughter around.' The women looks hopefully and starts to get up.

'Thanks but no thanks.' He says, cutting her off.

A few hours had passed by.

Grace had stopped by not long after the man, Kahiau, had stopped by to tell Danny that she and her new friend were going to build a sandcastle.

Since then she had yet to return and Danny was starting to get worried.

His over friendly neighbor had stopped talking to him after a few failed attempts to start a conversation.

He was probably being rude but he was simply not in the mood.

Checking his phone he saw that is was well past noon so he decided to go look for Grace.

He grabbed his phone, wallet and after a moment of hesitation he also grabbed his badge and police ID.

He himself didn't know why but his gut told him to bring it and years of experience taught him to trust his gut.

He stowed the items away in his pockets and started walking.

Grace had given him an indication where they would be building the sandcastle so it shouldn't be to hard to find.

It didn't take long for him to spot Grace and her friend but his path got blocked.

'I thought I told you to get lost haole!' Came the booming voice of the tall muscular man his neighbor called Kahiau.

Danny growled under his breath.

'I don't know what your problem is but leave me out of it.' He told the man.

His instincts told him he better not tell this guy that he's five-0.

'My problem, is you.' Growled the man.

At you he gave Danny a hard shove at his shoulder that made Danny stumble.

Now, Danny was in great physical condition.

Probably in better shape then back in New Jersey.

He had to be, trying to keep up with Steve and all his crazy antics.

But this guy not only matched Steve in hight, he was also build like a truck!

If the guy decided to start throwing punches, Danny was sure to be injured.

Besides, as an off duty cop he could not put his full effort in a fight there was also his daughter to consider.

Crap, I could be in trouble here.

While Danny could see the punch coming, he was nowhere prepared for the speed the guy possessed.

He hit Danny full force against his jaw and sent him to the ground hitting his head.

'I warned you that we don't want your kind here!'

And he kicked Danny once in the gut and once against his head.

Bystanders had seen the thing go down and hurriedly called for help.

Sadly also Grace had noticed what was going on.

'Danno!'

It was that voice that brought him back from his dazed state.

Just in time to see another kick come his way.

This time though he was prepared for the man's speed and could easily dode the kick.

Scrambling up on his feet he had to fight a wave of nausea and swallowed.

The big guy, now aware of the crowd they had gathered gave Danny look he couldn't quite read en left in a big hurry.

'Daddy are you okay?' Grace ran toward him with a worried look.

He opened his mouth to answer her but could only groan softly.

The pain in his jaw was excruciating and his stomach was no better.

The guy wasn't only build like a truck, he hit like one as well!

'Daddy?' Grace was getting scared now. Why wasn't Danno answering her?

'M fine.' He said without moving his jaw to much.

Those two little words however were almost to much.

'Sir, we called the police and the paramedics, you should get that checked out.'

A lifeguard walked towards him and ushered him and Grace away from the crowd.

Danny could only nod, not willing to speak at this point in time.

For anyone who knew him, the fact that he wasn't willing to say anything would be concerning.

'We'll put some ice on that jaw until the paramedics can check you out, hopefully it will reduce the swelling what.'

'Why doesn't he say anything?' Grace asks scared.

'Your father's jaw is hurting, talking will be really painful right now, can you tell me your names sweetheart?'

Grace looked with big eyed towards Danny who nods ar her.

'I'm Grace.' She says softly.

Danny fishes his police ID out of his pants pocket and shows it to the lifeguard.

'It's a pleasure detective Williams, Grace, I'm sorry it's under the circumstances though my name is Zarya.'

In the disstance they could hear both police and ambulance sirens.

A few minutes later a couple of paramedics and police officers came walking towards them.

My name is Alana and my partner here is Mike.' Said the paramedic, introducing herself and her partner.

'We got a call about someone injured?'

Danny raised his arm and gave a little half hearted wave.

'Daddy can't talk right now, it hurts him.'

The paramedics look at the little girl and give her a reassuring smile.

'We can see that, he has a big bruise forming,' Mike said gently.

'Are you hurt too?'

Grace shakes her head no.

One of the police officers steps forward, most of his attention on Danny.

'While your dad's getting checked out, how about you tell us what happened?'

He looks from Danny to Grace.

He can tell the man is in more pain then he lets on, probably not to scare his little girl.

'Do you think you can do that?'

'Yes, I think so,' She says, biting her lip.

The second officer clears his throat.

'I'll comb the beach for witnesses.'

Danny snaps his fingers and holds op his hand in a "wait" sign.

He shows them his police ID and then his five-0 badge.

'You're a cop?'

Danny nods and grabs his phone to type a quick message.

Heard the woman next to me on the beach call him Kahiau, he's a regular on this beach according to her. Says he's always harassing haole's.

Might want to hurry finding him, my partner is not going to be pleased.

The officers read what Danny wrote.

'The name, unfortunately, is indeed familiar you'll be pressing charges I take it?'

Danny nods a little.

'We'll contact you later detective, get yourself checked out for now for the time being your daughter can show us where you were seated and gather your belongings,' says the first officer calmly

'Is that okay with you?'

Danny nods.

'We'll meet you at he ambulance.'

Danny lays his hand on Grace's shoulder and makes a phone gesture.

Grace immediately understands what her dad wants her to do.

'I'll call uncle Steve.'

Danny nods and then let's the paramedics escort him towards the waiting ambulance.

Steve had been having a nice and quiet day.

He had woken up early and went for a nice long swim.

Afterward he decided to catch up on some of the house chores that had build up in the last couple of weeks.

None of them had any time off recently.

There had been case after case after case and they were all exhausted.

Kono hadn't been able to catch a decent wave in over a month, Chin had not had any real time with Malia and Danny had to cancel his plans with Grace more then once.

While Grace did understand, she was non to happy about it and had come to expect the canceled plans which broke Danny's heart.

Danny himself became more and more grumpy with each canceled plan.

Steve himself had not had the time for a good long workout.

A quick run here or there, a few mile swim if he was lucky.

So after they had wrapped up their last case and had finished up all this paperwork, Steve had put his foot down and told the Governor that he and his team needed a week for some R and R.

Kono could finally catch some good waves, Chin and Malia had flown to one of the other islands and Danny had Grace the entire week.

So he was more than surprised when his phone rang and the caller ID showed Grace calling.

'Hey Gracie, I was not expecting Danno to share you with anyone this week!'

'Uncle Steve,' Comes the shaky voice on the other end of the line.

At the tone of Grace's voice Steve automatically straightens his back and becomes very still.'

'What's wrong Gracie, where is your father?'

'Uncle Steve, Danno's hurt! A man hurt him and now he can't talk because it hurts to much!'

'Okay Gracie, do you know where you guys are?'

'Waikiki beach, I think?'

Steve hears Grace sniff followed by a rustling noise.

Afterwards another voice can be heard on the phone.

'This is officer Iosua from the HPD.'

''This is lieutenant commander Steve McGarret from te Governor's taskforce, what's going on?'

'We got a call about a fight on Waikiki beach, on scene we learned it involved one of yours.'

'I'm on my way, are my partner and his daughter okey?'

'Your partner is being looked after by the EMT's and his daughter is fine, not a scratch on her just worried and scared.'

' Give me Grace back,' he says while starting his truck.

'Uncle Steve?'

'I'm on my way Gracie five minutes, stay with officer Iosua can you do that?'

'Yes uncle Steve.'

'Good girl Grace, be there in five.' He hangs up the phone and left on high speed.

Steve made it under five minutes due to a speed that would leave his partner "rationally concerned" had he been there to enjoy the ride.

He can see the ambulance and decides that's good a place to start as any.

He exits his car and walks over to the ambulance.

'You really have to get checked out at the hospital sir.'

Steve could see Danny shake is head.

'Danny go and get checked out, I'm here now to look after Grace.'

Danny quickly looked up when he heard Steve's voice, regretting it just as quick as a dizzy spell and nausea hits him.

He closes his eyes and nods.

He really isn't feeling well and now that Steve's here for Grace he had no objections.

'Uncle Steve!'

Grace spots Steve and runs towards him giving him a hug, burying her face in his shoulder.

'He hit Danno, and kicked him too!'

'Danno's going to the hospital getting checked out, how about we put your stuff in my car and then go to the hospital?'

Grace nods, her head still buried against his shoulder.

Steve looks at Danny, reading the gratitude in his eyes.

'I need to talk with your dad for a second.'

Grace let's Steve go.

'Okay…'

He stands op and goes to his partner.

'I'll be right there with Grace, we'll get this guy.'

Danny shakes his head slowly, careful of his head.

He points toward the HPD officers and then at Steve, hoping to get his point across.

'We'll talk about it later.'

Danny closes his eyes and relaxes slightly.

With Steve looking after Grace he won't be able to do anything stupid hopefully giving the HPD enough time to get Kahiau before Steve could hang him from the roof of a building.

A few hours later finds Danny sitting in a hospital bed.

Steve and Grace with him, waiting for the doctor to come back with the X-ray results.

The door opened and the doctor entered the room.

'Got the results doc?' Steve asks right away, not even waiting until the doctor had closed the door.

'Yes,' he says with a look towards Grace thinking if he should send her away.

Grace however hadn't left Danny's side since she came and tightened her grip on her father.

The doctor shrugs.

'The X-rays reveal no fracture on the jaw, a subperiosteal hematoma is extremely painful but should heal in a minimum of three weeks though it could take as long as two years to fully repair.'

Danny raises a brow, not understanding.

'English doc, a what now?' Steve asks for Danny.

'A bone bruise, keep icing the jaw and try to keep talking to a minimum, I'm going to describe medication for the pain and inflammation.'

'Furthermore, if the swelling does get worse and the pain does not respond to the pain medication make sure to seek medical advise, you might need an MRI at that time.'

Danny nods.

'You also have a concussion which I'm sure you are aware of.'

'I would like to keep you overnight for observation, tomorrow you can be released if you have someone to keep an eye on you.'

'He can stay with me doc.'

De doctor nods.

'The nurses will be doing concussion checks through the night every two hours, try to get some rest someone will bring you an icepack for your jaw.'

With that the doctor leaves.

'Well, that is just great,' Steve sighs.

'I really want to get my hands on this guy now.'

Danny grabs his phone and types a message.

Let the police get him. They know who it is and can handle it just fine.

'You know who did this?'

I got his name from someone on the beach, he is known to have problems with haole's.

'Shit Danny,' Says Steve running his hand through his hair.

'Language uncle Steve!' Says Grace stern and looks at Steve in the same way Danny looks at him.

He raises his hands a little and grins.

'Sorry.'

'Get some rest partner, you need it.'

Danny closes his eyes, happy to know that his daughter is safe and sound.
