As time passes by he remembers less and less.
Why is he here?
How did he get here?
Who put him there?
Was he ever going to be found?
Is there even someone out there looking for him?
Why is it that he can remember nothing?
'Help,' he manages to whisper.
He shifts a little in the cramped space too tired to freak out about the cramped space.
He has no idea how much time has passed but it has been a while.
His heart is beating away in his chest.
He had started coughing a while ago and when he catches his breath he is wheezing like crazy.
'Please,' he begs again. 'Help me.
Then he loses consciousness again.
'Damn it!' Steve curses.
'How the hell can the son of a bitch keep slipping away!'
'I can only think of one answer,' Danny says, none too happy about the answer he had come up with.
'Well?' Steve asks, barely in control of his temper.
Five innocent people, all buried alive and no trace.
The governor kept asking for updates but there were non to give.
The entire team had been working non stop and they were reaching their limits.
'You guys are not gonna like it,' Danny says tiredly.
'Say it anyway,' Steve demands.
'He's either getting intel from someone on the inside, or can access the information himself.'
Chin frowns.
'You saying there is a dirty cop involved? You're right, I don't like it.'
'It would make sense,' Kono says. 'Only we and the HPD know the details about the case and it's not us leaking the information.'
'We can't prove it Kono.'
'I don't care about proving it right now, we need to be able to trust the people working on the case and right now that are the people in this room,' Steve says.
'From now on no information leaves these walls, I'll clear it with the governor.'
'If I you don't mind me saying Steve, we could all do with a break maybe we should call it quits early today and start tomorrow bright and early?'
Last month they had found their first victim.
A young single woman, reported missing by her mother after she failed to come pick up her nine year old son.
The second victim had also been seen young woman, reported missing by the teachers of her ten year old daughters teacher after she had failed to come pick her up.
All the five victims were young, single and with a child between the age of nine and twelve.
Steve looks at each member of his team.
Seeing their exhaustion in their eyes but also their determination to find the culprit.
He nods at Chin.
'Yeah, I hate to admit it but you're right.'
Danny immediately grabs his phone and gets the speed dial for Rachel.
'Rachel it's Danny, is it okay if I go pick Grace up for school?' He asks as he walks towards his office.
His time with Grace had suffered while he's working the case and he can't wait to see her again.
Steve smiles a little as he hears Danny on the phone.
Yeah, Chin is right we can use the break and distraction.
Maybe I'll give Kath a call to go out to dinner tonight.
Danny walks past them without stopping.
'I'm picking up Grace from school, see you guys tomorrow!'
Yeah, this brief break is needed by all of them, even the very youngest.
Grace is walking towards her locker with her friend.
She had felt her phone vibrate while still in class fifteen minutes ago but hadn't checked it out yet.
She checks her phone and a huge smile appears on her face.
'What are you smiling about?' Asks her Friend.
'My father is picking me up.'
'So?' Her friend asks confused, not seeing why that is something to be happy about.
Also a part jealousy since her parents either sent a driver to come get her or she has to take a buss.
'He's been very busy with work so I haven't seen him in a while.'
She shrugs but doesn't comment.
'She had seen Grace's father pick Grace up often and he sometimes gave her a ride too.
She had to admit that she hadn't seen him in a couple of weeks though.
'If you want I can ask dad if he can give you a ride so you won't have to take a buss?'
'Yeah thanks,' she answers with a smile.
They walk outside, trying to see if her father's car is already there.
'I don't see him yet', Grace says, not too worried yet.
Her father had only just sent her that text after all.
They wait a little while longer and as time passes Grace starts to worry.
'You said he was busy with his job, maybe he got called away?'
Grace shakes her head.
'Then he would not have said he would come and pick me up or called.'
She grabs her phone and hits #1 on her speed dial.
When the call went to voicemail right away she hits number three.
This time the call went through.
'Hey Gracie what's up?'
'Hey uncle Steve, is Danno still at work?'
'No he left a while ago to pick you up. Are you saying he isn't there yet?'
'Yes, when I tried to call him it went straight to voicemail.'
'Go back inside Gracie, I'll come and pick you up.
He opens his eyes and it's dark.
His senses are slow to return but right away he feels that something is wrong.
He had been on his way to pick Grace up from school and then…
And then…
Shit, why can't I remember?
I left the office to go pick Grace up and….
He tries to move but the space is to cramped.
In shock Danny holds his breath, his eyes huge.
Tiny space, tiny space!
Why is he in a tiny space! He can't be in a tiny space, he needs to get out right away!
He raises his hands but doesn't come far.
Oh no, this can't be happening!
His breathing picks up and he almost starts to hyperventilate.
I've been grabbed and buried alive!
No freaking way this can't be happening!
Okay, calm down if you have been buried alive you don't have any oxygen to spare, calm your breathing down.
He says to himself.
He struggles to get his breathing under control for a little while. Trying to not think about the predicament he's in.
Judging from the thin air he thinks he's been in there for a while.
By now Grace must have missed him and informed someone.
That means that his team must be aware and that he is missing.
Not that it does any good, they have no leads and their latest suspect has an alibi that checked out.
Now that he thinks about it, Danny does fit the victim description.
He's a young single father of a ten year old.
All the other victims died a few hours after they had been buried and if his estimation is correct he'd been buried just long enough for about an hour.
As the oxygen becomes less and less, he'll be noticing the effects more and more.
Just like all the other victims.
He hears the sweet voice of his daughter and forces his body back to consciousness.
'Gracie,' he whispers, followed by a cough.
'Gracie, why are you here?'
His breathing is to fast and he's wheezing.
'I'm here because you want me to be here.'
'No, no you can't be here, not here, god Grace no.'
'It's okay daddy, it doesn't hurt, it's just like falling asleep!'
'Can't sleep, must not… sleep.'
'You can, and when you wake up it won't hurt anymore and we'll be together!'
'T'gethr?'
'Yes, then I won't have to miss you anymore!'
Danny can feel his eyes grow heavy and it becomes harder and harder to keep his eyes open.
No! If he fell asleep they would never be together again!
Fight god damn it!
He gives a weak little cough and his eyes finally close again.
Can't fall asleep…
Might not wake up….
Danny loses consciousness and breathes in, one last time.
His chest stops rising.
They had broken the case!
The man Ike O'Connel had missed the camera hanging at Grace's school.
He had been the one to find the first victim and had called the police.
Ever since he had stayed in touch with HPD about the case.
A young and eager rookie had shared what he knew and kept the man informed.
Now they finally had him and it was a race against time.
The man had acted like a concerned civilian and they had bought it.
Now, they're up against the hands of time to save Danny.
Surprising them all, not because they thought her incapable but because it's usually Steve, Kono had forced the man to talk, not leaving him a choice.
The man had given them a location and Steve drove like he had never before.
Chin was on the phone calling in advance for an ambulance, informing them it concerned a victim that had been buried alive so they had the appropriate tools at hand.
Chin and Kono were out of the car even before it came to a complete still.
O'conner had buried Danny at a graveyard of all the sick places.
Kono who had ridden in the backseat threw Chin a shovel and they started to dig.
Soon they reached the coffin and Steve threw down his shovel, opening the lid.
He couldn't stifle a gasp at the image.
Danny, laying still with a blueish colored skin and pale blue lips and closed eyes.
I am so, so sorry for the cliffhanger!
Just in case people start yelling, no this obviously is not a death fic!
Next letter, for those who don't know the alphabet ;), will be C.
