C is for Coma

Steve and Chin hurried and got Danny out of the coffin.

Steve immediately dropped to his knees and started chest compressions.

Kono dropped next to Steve and started the rescue breaths.

Chin grabbed his phone and dialed 911.

'This is lieutenant Kelly with the five-0 task force, calling with an officer down at the cemetery on Nuuanu Ave, detective Williams was buried alive and in need of CPR,' Chin tells the central in one breath, not capable of turning his gaze away from the still form of his friend.

'An ambulance is en route, is detective Williams breathing on his own?'

'No he is not.' Chin watched as Kono performed mouth to mouth once more.

Danny had flirted with Kono when they had first met.

Chin had not been too happy with that but nothing had come of it.

'Steve let me take over, you're getting tired.'

Steve thought about arguing but he had to admit that it would be best if Chin took over.

They quickly switched places.

'I can hear the ambulance, I'll go lead them in,' Steve says and runs towards their cars.

He waves at the ambulance.

'This way hurry!,' he says as soon as the EMT's exit the vehicle.

Somewhere his brain seemed to recognize the two EMT's but he paid it no mind.

He had other things to worry about.

'Follow me.'

The EMT's quickly gathered the necessities and run after Steve.

'What can you tell us?'

'He's been buried alive for hours, when we found him he had stopped breathing and we started CPR right away. He still isn't breathing on his own.'

As soon as the arrived the EMT's set to work.

'We're going to have to intubate Rick, be careful of his jaw.'

Steve looks confused for about a second.

A few months ago a overgrown local had punched Danny and Danny had ended up with a bone bruise on his jaw.

While it has healed it at times still was sensitive.

That's where he recognized the two EMT's from.

They had been the once to respond then as well, Rick and Alana if he remembers correctly.

Rick and Alana work quickly and efficiently, Steve kneels next as close to Danny as he can, his eyes never leaving his friend.

Fight Danny, fight dammit you can't leave us.

Think about Gracie, what is she going to do without her Danno?

You know as well as me that no one can compare to you.

Not step-Stan, not me and hell at times not even Rachel is enough.

Don't you go quitting on them, on us… on me!

'We have to leave right away, are you coming with us?'

Steve nods and follows Rick and Alana.

When the ambulance arrived at Queens medical center Danny was whisked away leaving Steve behind.

He got lead to a waiting room where he kept alternating between pacing and sitting.

Kono and Chin run into the waiting room looking for Steve.

'Any word?' Chin asks as soon as he spots Steve.

'No, nothing yet.'

'Shit, they gave no indication whether he would make it?'

'No, I'm debating whether I should call Rachel or not.'

'Maybe hold off until we know more so you can give her some answers, once Grace knows she'll want to come visit,' Kono says quietly.

'Not sure is Rachel will allow that, neither she or Danny would want her to see him like that.'

'You're right, I'll hold off until we know more.'

Hours pass and Steve had given up on sitting all together and pacing like a caged animal.

Chin sat next to Kono his eyes fixated on the door where the doctor would have to come through.

Kono sat still, almost afraid that if she moved something terrible would happen.

When a large older man with a long white coat and a stern face came through the door the group stood as one.

'Family of detective Williams?' He asks looking toward them knowing full well he had the right group.

'Yeah,' Looking at the doctor's face for any sign of the fate of his friend.

'Please take a seat, I'm doctor Parke, my team and I have been working on detective Williams.'

'How's Danny doing doctor?' Kono asks.

'As you know the detective was not breathing on his own and the EMT's had to intubate on scene.'

'He still has not started breathing on his own and will remain on the ventilator until such time he starts breathing comfortably on his own.'

'Furthermore he isn't responding to any of the tests we're conducting, I'm sorry to say that the detective has slipped in a coma.'

'Will he make it?' Steve dares to ask.

'I'm afraid it's to early to tell, we have him listed as stable but critical.'

'Detective Williams was without oxygen for an unknown amount of time, if he wakes we have to be watchful for brain damage.'

'Can we see him and more important, he has a ten year old daughter, can she see him?'

Doctor Parke thinks for a moment.

His usually stern face turning even more so in thought.

'Give him a few days before bringing her to see him, a nurse will be here to bring you to him soon.'

The doctor stands.

'I can't make any promises but your friend is fighting, sit with him and talk to him.'

'A familiar voice or touch might just make a difference in his recovery.'

Steve stands and shakes the doctor's hand.

'Thanks doc.'

Doctor Parke nods and leaves the room.

'I should call Rachel before the nurse comes,' Steve says exhausted, the days events catching up on him.

Chin looks sympathetically at his friend as Steve walks out of the room.

That's not a task he envies.

'Rachel it's Steve.'

'Commander, has something happened to Daniel?'

Damn it, she's sharp as always.

'It's a long story Rachel, but Danny's in the hospital and he's in a coma.'

'Will he be alright? What happened to him, did he get shot?'

'It's to soon to tell, he got grabbed when he went to pick Grace up after school…'

'O god, he was buried alive like those other people in the news, wasn't he?'

Rachel's voice was full of worry.

Danny and her are going through a rough time with a lot of fights but he can hear genuine concern.

'I'm afraid so, we found him and got him to Queens fast however he's not breathing on his own and connected to a ventilator, the doctors can't say if he'll be waking up and if he'll have brain damage if he does.'

'How am I going to explain this to Grace, she'll want to see him.'

'I know but like the doctor said, give him a few days, I'm sorry but I have to go Rachel, I'll keep you updated about his condition.' He hangs up the phone when he sees a nurse walk towards him.

'Commander, you can see him now. Follow me.'

When he enters the room he mentally has to brace himself.

What was he about to see?

Did his partner still have that blueish completion?

Danny, white still pale, was looking much better.

Kono and Chin were already seated on chairs next to him.

Chin seeing Steve enter the room, stood to make place for him.

Danny was connected to a ventilator and some other stuff that he didn't pay attention to.

He just sat down next to his friend and placed his hand on Danny's arm.

'I just got off the phone with Rachel, she's a sharp one buddy, knew right away that something was wrong. She said she'll bring Gracie to see you in a few days if you improve so don't you dare let that little girl down.'

A part of Steve hoped that his voice managed to reach Danny and that he would wake up.

He knew that it wouldn't happen and yet he was disappointed.

'It's okay buddy, as long as you keep fighting you can sleep as long as you need just stay away from the bright light.'

He feels strange, not bad at all just…. Strange.

He feels like he's floating yet at the same times it feels like he's laying on something very fluffy.

At times he thinks he can hear voices, at other times he can't.

Either way, he doesn't mind. He's comfortable and at piece and in no hurry to listen to the voices.

Just the knowledge that the voices are there for him is enough for now.

he doesn't know how much time passes, if time passes.

He just knows that he is in no rush to leave.

As time passes he starts trying to focus on the voices.

He mostly hears a deep male voice telling him stories about a war.

Other times he can hear a soft female voice, telling him stories about surfing or about her day.

Sometimes when he hears that voice he can hear another male voice, not as deep as the first one but just as familiar.

That voice usually read to him or tells him unbelievable stories about some sort of J.I Joe with a death wish.

His favorite voice came the least of all and was the one voice hie tried to respond to but he was yet to succeed.

It was the voice of a young girl.

The first few times he heard that voice it was shaky and near crying.

She told him about her day, about tests she had taken that day, children she had played with and how someone didn't get the voices right when they read to her.

The girl's voice always starts out sad and ends sad and Danny desperately wished he could take that sadness away.

He wished that the voice came more often and stayed longer, he always tried a little harder to listen when he heard that voice.

He felt himself grow more aware.

The lovely voice was back and today he wanted to try again to take the sadness away from it.

However when the voice spoke something was different.

There was no sadness, there was impatience, a little bit of anger but most of all…

There was desperation in the voice.

A desperation that nearly broke his heart.

It was demanding a response, it was demanding Danny to wake up.

But who is this Danny?

Who was this monkey the voice spoke off?

Monkey… Monkey… His… His monkey…

Grace!

Rachel picked Grace up from school, growing more worried everyday for her little girl.

The young girl spent more time in the hospital beside her father then Rachel thought healthy but she couldn't convince Grace otherwise.

She had once, three weeks ago forced Grace to stay away from the hospital and go play with her friend.

Grace had thrown a tantrum, something that she rarely did and hadn't spoken to Rachel for days.

Rachel had finally relented and stopped trying to convince Grace to spent less time at the hospital.

Grace was convinced Danny would wake up any time now.

She had been convinced for some time now.

Two weeks ago she had been with her father, holding his hand and telling him about her day.

In the middle of a sentence she quit talking looking at Danny with big eyes.

She said Danny had squeezed her hand but when the doctor came and did some tests their hope vanished.

The doctor had told them it was most likely just a muscle spasm and that there were no signs of Danny waking up.

With every dat that Danny stayed in coma, the less hope the group held for him waking up.

Rachel saw her daughter walk towards the car and could tell that something had changed.

She climbed in the car and closed the door.

'Did something happen Grace?' She asks.

'No mommy, can we go see Danno? I have to tell him something.'

Rachel looks a little confused.

'Of course, what do you have to tell him?'

'I want to tell him, but you can listen if you like.'

Grace didn't speak on the ride over.

Normally she told her mother about her day and the assignments she had to do for class.

Today however she didn't feel like any of that.

She had to tell Danno something important and she was focussed on that.

Grace walks determined into the room surprising even Steve.

'Gracie, is everything okay?'

Grace ignores him.'

She stands at her fathers bedside looking closely at him.

'Wake up,' she says clearly with impatience, anger and desperation in her voice.

'You've slept long enough I want you to wake up right now!' She pronounces now extra clear.

'Everybody says it's okay and to take as long as you want, but I don't want you to take all that time, I want you right now so wake up!'

Steve, shocked about Grace's tone of voice stands up and pulls the little girl in his arms.

'Gracie, I'm afraid it doesn't work like that baby, Danno can't control it.'

'He can! He squeezed my hand that time!'

'Honey,' Rachel starts but never gets to Finnish.

'Mn'key,' comes the weak and hoarse voice from the bed.

'Monkey… Grace.'

All eyes turn with shock towards the bed, Steve immediately calling for a doctor.

'Daddy,' Grace cries.

'Stay awake Danny, can you do that for me buddy?' Steve says with relief in his voice.

He grabs Danny's hand and gives it a squeeze.

Danny weakly squeezes back.

Doctor Parke walks into the room followed by some nurses.

'Alright, clear the room and let us do our job, we'll let you know when you can come back.'

His tone left no room for arguments and Rachel went outside the room with Grace.

Even Steve, who had learned early on not to cross the big, stern doctor left the room without arguments.

An hour later the nurses left the room.

One of them stopped infant of the group having grown in numbers, Kono and Chin having joined them in the waiting room.

The nurse is a tiny woman with a calm demeanor.

'You can go back in now but keep it brief, I mean it I'm on duty tonight and I want Danny to get some real rest do you understand?'

Steve nods.

'Thank you Rayen, we won't be long,' Steve swears with big innocent eyes.

'I've learned not to trust you whenever you look at me with those eyes,' she says with a laugh before returning to her job.

Steve re enters the room, his gaze fixed on Danny.

Danny's eyes are closes again but Steve can tell that something's different.

'How's he doing Doc?'

'He'll be fine, he has a long way to go before regaining his strength but he'll be perfectly fine.'

Kono hugs Chin and cries in relief.

Chin smiles and hugs her back.

'You said something about a chance of brain damage when he was brought in?'

'He's exhausted but so far there is no trace of it, he understood what we were saying and remembers where he is and who he is though he doesn't not remember what happened to him which is perfectly normal, those memory's might never come back.'

Steve smiles and shakes the doctors hand.

'We can't thank you enough doc!'

Doctor Parke smiles a little shoving his hands into his coat pockets after releasing Steve's hand.

People are always grateful when he delivers good news and sometimes even for his efforts when he brings bad news. However the intensity of these people's gratefulness is a little overwhelming.

Grace looks at the doctor, at first his size and face had scared her a little but had decided that he can't be a bad or scary person if he is taking care of her dad.

'Daddy is getting better?'

Doctor Parke smiles and nods.

'Your father still needs a lot of sleep but he'll be back on his feet in no time, whatever you said to him worked.'

Grace smiles brightly.

'I just told him to stop being lazy!'

Doctor Parke nods seriously.

'You did a very good job Grace, you let him know the rules okay?'

Grace nods just as serious.

Doctor Elian Parke had never been good with children.

They were scared of his size and it didn't help that he had a natural angry and/or stern demeanor.

Grace Williams seemed to be a rare exception which made it easier for him to interact with her.

'I'll be making my rounds but will be back soon, I know you'll all want to be with Danny but he needs his rest so I'll give you five minutes,' and with that he leaves the room.

Danny wakes up when it's still dark outside.

He knows he is in the hospital but can't remember for the life of him how he ended up here.

He turns his head slightly seeing Steve asleep in an awkward position on a chair.

'Steve?' He asks.

Steve's eyes shoot open, focussing on Danny right away.

He grabs Danny's hand in his and smiles.

'Welcome back brother.'

It may be a bit of a weird ending but I have no idea what further treatment would be (not that I know how any of the treatment would be so I just made use of my big imagination and Google).

I hope you all liked this so don't forget to feed the plot bunny and leave a review.

For certain letters I have ideas but for others I do not. Next chapter will be more of a "Sticks and stones…" situation but if you have requests for the letter E than don't be shy and let me know!
