A/N: sorry for the late update on this one and the missed update on Sunday. Life got in the way and then my computer was giving me attitude.
Normally I post this story on Monday but from now on it will be Wednesday.
I notice that I'm a little scared to go into medical details scared for backlash since I know next to nothing about medical procedures. This chapter I had already written so I won't go back on it but from here on out I kinda have decided not to care about all that, if I like it I'll be writing it whether it's accurate and possible or not.
Next chapter will be more of a humor filled chapter.
I do not own Hawaii five-0 or any of it's characters. The OC's however are mine and are not to be used. All mistakes are mine.
F is for falling
He looked Danny straight in his eyes and knew what was about to happen. And he knew that Danny knew it too. What was supposed to be a relaxing day was about to go horribly wrong.
There wasn't a thing Steve could do but watch as the ground underneath Danny's feet gave away.
He reaches his hand towards his best friend, his brother really and he saw Danny reach for him.
Danny let out a loud scream as he fell and Steve ran towards the edge where the ground just gave way.
'Danny!' Steve yells.
Please don't be dead, please don't be dead.
Was the mantra in his head.
Well, you see Gracie? I know Danno wasn't really much of an outdoor type but we went hiking and the ground gave way and Danno fell.
That would not go over well…
He looks over the edge and sees Danny's body some meters below lying still on an edge.
Thank god.
Steve thinks and sighs out loud.
At least he didn't fall down the entire mountain!
'Danny!' He shouts in hope Danny can hear him.
'Buddy answer me!'
Steve pulls his phone out of his pocket to call for help but sees no bars.
Crap, I should have remembered that there is no reception here.
If I want to get help I'll have to leave Danny…
That's out of the question, but then again… I might have no other choice.
This is not a well traveled path, it could take hours before someone else comes along.
That leaves leaving Danny while I go for help my only option…
'Hey buddy, not sure if you can hear me but I'm gonna get you some help okay?'
'I won't be long, just… just stay there!' Steve yells and gets up.
He starts running, the irony of their reversed situation completely lost on him.
Danny felt the ground underneath his feet give way and he knew he was screwed.
He always knew that this pineapple infested hellhole would be the death of him.
Almost getting shot on his first day on the island proved that for him.
He let out a frightened scream and felt his head make contact with something.
The last thing he heard bore he passed out were the frantic screams of his friend.
He feels himself returning to consciousness slowly but his body refuses to move.
He is somewhat surprised to still be alive, he did just fall down a mountain!
'Hey buddy…. hear me… you… help…' he hears coming from above him.
Steve?
He tries to answer but his voice refuses.
God his head is killing him!
He has to fight with all his might to stay conscious.
'Won't … long…. stay there!'
Funny guy, where would I go?
And you better make it quick, I don't feel so well.
Maybe now people would believe him when he says that he's not made for the outdoors activities?
The only reason he had allowed Steve to drag him with him today was because the situation with Rachel was becoming worse and worse and it was coming to a point he was asking himself if he should keep fighting.
He loves Grace and would follow her to the end of the earth, but he couldn't stop thinking that right now he was hurting her.
He'd quit his job, packed his stuff and moved before.
He could do it again, he would do it again.
Since the day he set foot on this island he had wanted to leave, so why was he fighting it now?
A sharp pain in his had made him wish he would pass out.
He felt himself get sick and throw up but his body refused to roll on his side.
Finally he passed out.
Hours later Steve was finally sitting in the hospital beside his still unconscious friend.
He couldn't really remember calling Chin or making his way back to his friend.
He does remember seeing Danny's unconscious form being lifted up in the chopper, his head secured by a brace.
Steve had demanded on coming with his friend and the smell of vomit had scared him.
Danny had been lucky that he hadn't chocked in his own vomit.
Steve had looked at Danny's face, taking in all the painful looking bruises and couldn't help feeling sorry for his friend.
He should have let Danny sit on his couch watching his movie.
Steve had smiled a little when they arrived as a familiar face stood waiting for them.
'Just couldn't stay out of trouble could he?'
'He always did say this island was trying to kill him,' Steve answers doctor Parke.
They had met the doctor almost a year ago after Danny had been buried alive and had slipped into a coma.
Doctor Elian Parke had been the one to look after Danny.
'Well then,' Parke says. 'Let's prove him wrong.'
He rushed away with Danny, he had to admit that the man needs help fast.
He had been notified about the fall he had taken and it concerned him.
Danny was wearing a neck brace to stabilize his neck and he was firmly secured to a backboard.
His face was already supporting bruises that almost hurt him when looking at it.
'Okay people I want…' he commands in a stern voice, no doubts that his orders would be followed.
Doctor park had assured them that Danny hadn't broken his neck or back, that he had most likely been unconscious when he fell.
He had broken his leg, dislocated his shoulder, broken some ribs and has the mother of concussions. But nothing that wouldn't heal over time.
By some miracle he hadn't broken his back or his neck, he had most likely lost consciousness while falling.
Now it was just waiting until he would wake up.
Danny would be in for a lot of physical therapy but he would survive.
If only he would wake up.
'Doctor Parke told me you guys were back,' comes a familiar voice.
Steve turns and smiles at the nurse.
'Nurse Caelem, nice to see you again. You assigned to Danny?'
The tiny nurse smiles and nods.
'Yeah, and I thought I told you to call me Rayen.'
'Right, sorry. Is it normal for him to haven't woken up yet?'
'He's supporting a nasty concussion commander, it takes time. Why don't you go and grab yourself a coffee while I look him over real quick, I can see his dressing needs changing.'
'Yeah, I could use a coffee.'
'Will his daughter be joining you?'
Steve stands and shakes his head.
'Grace is on the mainland with his mother, I wanted to get him out of his house and dragged him with me on a hike.'
'I got the feeling he's not really the "outdoorsy" type of guy.'
Steve laughs.
'Not really, I'll be hearing this for a while to come!'
'G't that right…' comes a tired voice from bed.
Steve and Rayen turn their attention towards the patient.
'Good to see you awake Detective, can you open your eyes for us?' Rayen asks.
Danny, with Herculean effort, manages to open his eyes ever so slightly only to shut them immediately with a pained groan.
'Commander, please turn the lights off.'
Steve hurries to follow the order.
'It's dark now detective, can you try again?'
Unfocused eyes manage to find the nurses.
Rayen smiles.
'Good job detective, the doctor will be here soon, do you remember what happened?'
Danny frowns a little.
'Remember…. sitting on my couch and Steve barging in, I think?'
'Anything else?'
'Nothing, sorry.'
'That's okay, take it easy you have a nasty concussion.'
Parke enters the room.
'Hello detective, they told me you woke up, how are you feeling?'
'Tired and I hurt.'
'On a scale from one to ten?'
'Eight,' Danny answers honestly.
'What happened Steve? I can't remember getting hurt, how long have I been here?'
Parke shakes his head as soon as Steve tries to answer.
'I'd rather you try and remember on your own detective, what is the last thing you remember clearly?'
'Steve barging in this morning…. That was this morning right?' Danny asks a little concerned.
'Yeah buddy that was this morning.'
Danny relaxes.
'I'll give you some more painkillers, we'll be giving you concussion checks every thirty minutes. Given your history we'll have to make sure you don't slip into a coma.'
Danny pales a little at the reminder and nods.
Big mistake.
A fiery pain shoots through his entire body making him sick to his stomach.
After what seems like ages, he has a warm feeling running through his veins.
The pain seems to subside and he can relax.
His eyes start to feel heavy and it becomes harder and harder to keep his eyes open.
'Try and get some rest detective, some one will wake you in a little wile,' he can hear his doctor say.'
'Good morning Danny,' greets Rayen him cheerfully.
It had been a day since he had been admitted and he was alone in his room for a change.
Danny, not a natural morning person mumbles something that could be considered a greeting and a curse.
'The physio therapist will be coming by later this morning to discus you schedule, I'll help you get ready.'
'Can't wait,' Danny says with more than a little sarcasm in his voice.
Physio isn't going to be fun.
He knows that it's necessary for his recovery but he still hurts bad and the thought of moving too much isn't something he's looking forward to.
'You'll be fine, I know who has been assigned to your case and I know for a fact she's very good.'
'I'm sure she is, I'm just not looking forward to moving much.'
'It will do you some good though, now let's get you ready.'
Danny was sitting in bed when he hears a short knock on his door.
Before he can even answer the door opens and a woman walks in.
'Rayen? Everything alright?' He asks concerned.
The times Rayen had come to check on him she had been cheerful, her knocks were softer and gave him time to answer.
Something was definitely wrong.
Her knock was harder and she hadn't given him a chance to answer.
Her demeanor seems different as well.
Rayen looks at him with a raised eyebrow.
Her grey/blue eyes normally full of good humor seem different.
More distant and while not mean they seem to hold a little more coldness than normally.
A little smile plays on the corner of her lips and she walks towards the bed.
Even her smile is different.
What is wrong with her?'
'Detective Williams, my apologies for the confusion,' she says.
Danny blinks, taken aback.
Since he woke up he had told ramen to call him Danny and she had told him to call her Rayen.
Her voice is different!
'My name is Jinera and I'll be taking care of your physical therapy.'
Danny blinks taken aback.
'I am so sorry, I thought you were the nurse.'
'Don't worry about it detective, it's a common mistake. Nurse Caelem is my sister.'
'She could have mentioned that.'
'Where would be the fun in that?' Jinera asks.
Danny can easily read the mischievous sense of humor Joiner seems too poses and roles his eyes.
'Depends on whom you're talking too. So since you're here let's get this show on the road.'
Jinera gives Danny a sweet innocent smile.
Danny soon learns not to trust that smile.
It's late when Steve and Kono enter the hospital room.
A case had kept the team busy only to be resolved by the husband that was supposedly missing turning up without a care in the world nursing a hangover.
The scolding that had followed was something that would haunt the man for a good couple of weeks.
Neither Kono or Steve had expected the sight of a pale sick looking Danny when they entered the room.
'Dammit, what the hell happened to you Danny?'
Steve asks concerned.
'Satan happened or one of his offspring, the woman is a sadist.'
'You wouldn't happen to be speaking of my dear sister now would you?'
Kono turns around surprised to see Rayen standing in the door opening.
'Sister?' She asks.
'Dear sister? Are you sure you are related to her because I have tot ell you, she is evil! By the way, thanks for the heads up, you could have warned me you have a doppelgänger walking around!'
His little rant left him exhausted and hurting and he tiredly closed his eyes.
Rayen simply laughed.
'She's an acquired taste but in a few weeks you'll be glad to have her on your team.'
'Doppelgänger?' Steve asks amused.
'He is referring to my twin sister, from what I heard the two of you got along quite well, it took my husband a while before he didn't want to strangle her anymore.'
Rayen says while checking Danny's chart.
'Doctor Parke will be here shortly to discus your release so try and rest a little longer.'
Twenty minutes later doctor Parke walks into the room.
'Good evening Danny, how are you feeling?'
'Hey doc, Rayen just stopped by and gave me some painkillers so I'm feeling better now.'
'Ah yes, I heard you hit it off with your Physiotherapist.'
'That's one way of putting it, it's hard to imagine she's nurse Rayen's twin.'
'I'm sure you'll get used to her, she did tell me you did really well today and that you should be able to manage therapy as an out patient.'
'She did? So when can I get out of here?'
'You'll still need a lot of help when you get home, do you have family you can stay with?'
Danny just opened his mouth when Steve answers for him.
'He'll be staying with me doc.'
'Well that's good, then I can release you in your friends care tomorrow morning, how does that sound?'
'Fantastic, thanks doc,' Danny says and looks to Steve. 'Thanks man.'
'Don't mention it buddy, I've got a meeting with the governor first but I'll pick you up after.'
'I can pick him up boss,' Kono says. 'That way you won't have to rush and Danny won't harass the nursing staff asking every ten minutes if you're here yet,' she says with a grin.
Danny sends a little grin Kono's way.
When he finally could leave after his coma Steve was supposed to come pick him up.
A case managed to keep Steve and the team busy and Danny had gotten impatient.
Mid afternoon Rayen had called Steve and begged him to come pick Danny up.
'The nursing staff and I thank you,' Parke says while sending an annoyed look at Danny.
'Get some extra rest this evening, Jinera will be stopping by for another session before your release.'
With a smile he leaves the room.
His wife and the other nurses will be over joyed that Danny would be picked up by a friend rather than having to wait until Steve had the time.
A/N I already have a idea for G but if there is something you'd like to see for H let me know!
