Chapter 48: That hated shore waits for me

"You have seen more of the world than me. Is there actually an end to the sea?"

Lucy paused, her hand stilling in the sea girl's hair where she'd been carding her fingers through it, and frowned at the horizon. "There is, in places-those places are called 'the coast'. Narnia and other countries lie against the coasts. But that's the other side of the world, and all I've heard is that Aslan's country is somewhere on this side, so there must be an end out here as well."

The former queen fell silent for a long time, eyes watching the glittering water-an end, there had to be an end, an end to the sea, an end to their journey, and o, Alsan, did it have to be so?-until the delicate touch of a brown and purple hand at her cheek made her look down into the sea girl's face.

"I wish it didn't have an end."

Lucy smiled, bittersweet. "Me too."
