This is a long one, a kind of bittersweet snippet exploring the relationship Setskogen and Høland (No.6, this time) had back in the day... The slow burn between them and the forbidden feelings they had for each other. She was engaged to his brother, Bjørkelangen... yet, she fell hard for Høland.

This describes how they both try to resist each other... but failing... It ends a bit sad, but I can reveal that they do get each other in the end, dating for years until the post-war era tear them apart... I might pick it up and write more about that later.

Forbidden Feelings

By: BurningFireman

Høland leaned against the shunting stick and looked at the black-haired woman walking across the yard. He had caught himself thinking a lot of her lately, not only was she easy on the eyes, but he also admired her strength and the aura of pride that always surrounded her.

He was a bit rattled by the effect Setskogen had on him, didn't quite understand what was happening. Every time she was near, his whole body tingled, and he would blush like a schoolboy. She was so incredibly beautiful with the long, black hair, the big midnight blue eyes who could make any man feel weak… the tempting mouth with the luscious lips, her proud stature… the swaying hips and the rounded breasts. She was a beauty, no less.

Høland felt his cheeks burn by his own thoughts. He shouldn't daydream about her like this! She was seeing his brother anyway, and himself was just a loser who nobody liked after his predecessor died, even if he didn't quite understand how that was his fault. Despite this, he felt his stare being drawn to her. He scolded himself for throwing glances in her direction. Her laughter and the little dimple that appeared when she smiled made him warm inside.

These confusing feelings had made him avoid her as much as he could. It was probably for the better. But he realized it wouldn't work out in the end. They had to work together, and he didn't want her to think he loathed her. She hadn't done anything wrong; it was him not being able to control his feelings.

A whistle from a nearby engine pulled him back to reality. He let out a sigh and started working again.

...

Setskogen walked across the yard towards the shed. She smiled and waved at him before going inside. He felt his cheeks heat up and his heart skip a beat. He just couldn't help it.

Ever since Høland had helped her escape a handsy drunkard a few weeks prior, Setskogen had considered talking to him alone and thank him for saving her. She didn't even want to think of what could have happened if he hadn't arrived at the time he did. She was deeply thankful and least she could do was letting him know how much she appreciated what he had done for her.

She had seen him walk over to the carriage shed behind the station a while ago and decided to go there looking for him.

She subconsciously pulled a hand over her hair to make sure her hair looked somewhat decent.

Høland was standing with his back towards her when she rounded the corner. He was loading some crates onto a flatbed. It had to get ready for the evening train.

She stopped a few meters behind him and contemplated whether she should call out or wait until he turned around, but before she had decided, he turned around and suddenly they stood face to face. He was sweaty and a bit dirty after a long day at work in the summer heat, but in her mind, it only made him even more handsome.

He put the last crate away and gave her a curious look. He didn't seem surprised to see her. Actually, he seemed to be restless, as if he didn't have time for chitchat. She felt stupid. He had a lot to do, she shouldn't waste his time.

"Hi. Can I help you? I have to fill up the engine with water, and I have to help Urskog with something..." he started to walk away from her, and she felt her heart sink.

She shook her head. "It can wait."

He gave her a small smile and walked towards the water tower at a quick pace. Her cheeks were burning in shame and embarrassment as she stood there, staring after him. That much for showing her gratitude…

She walked away with her head down. He didn't want to talk to her. Maybe he judged her for what happened with the drunkard? Maybe he thought the incident was her own fault?
The thought gave her a sting in her heart, and she exhaled loudly. No use in standing around and ponder about it.

As she passed the water tower, she kept her eyes glued to the ground, not wanting to look at him.

...

After work, a few days later.

Setskogen wept her forehead with the back of her hand. It was too hot for her liking this summer. She looked forward to having a swim in the lake later, that much was for sure! Nothing felt better than peeling off her sweaty clothes and sink into the cool water.

She was happy that she had found a place she could be alone. Then she wouldn't have to cover up, and she could go skinny dipping if she wanted.

She walked along the lakeside towards her secret spot, gorgeous water lilies growing in the water along the way. A frog jumped from a one of the big leaves into the water. From the trees on the other side of the lake, she could hear lovely birdsong.

She reached the secret spot, hidden behind some trees and looked out across the lake surface. A crow flew up nearby and made her jump and then chuckle over her own silliness.

She slipped out of the dirty overalls she wore when working. Then she removed her socks and stood dressed only in her under garments. She hesitated for a moment, but then took them off too and put them on the rock next to the rest of her clothes. She was alone anyway!

She waded into the water and then threw herself forward into a swim once it was deep enough. She flipped over on her back and looked up at the sky. Her long hair floating like a black veil around her head.

Then she heard a twig snap and she hastily looked around. Between the trees, she could see a person walking towards the secret beach!

Setskogen sank deeper into the water and crossed her arms over her chest to cover up. She could see that it was a man. Tall, with broad shoulder and dark hair.

She gasped as it dawned to her who it was. Høland!

What should she do now? She was buttnaked. If she got up from the water, she might be able to get dressed before he reached the beach, but he would probably notice something moving and spot her. She didn't want to risk it. She had to stay in the water. Maybe he wasn't coming this way, she thought hopeful.

Be he was. He came closer and closer until he came to a stop by the rock she had put her clothes. He looked confused at the small pile of clothes before he turned his gaze towards the water and spotted her.

"Oh! I'm so sorry!" he put a hand over his eyes and turned quickly away, standing with his back against her. "I didn't know anyone was here." He said loudly.

Setskogen blushed.

"Me neither…" she replied. "My clothes are on that rock. I'm coming up now, so don't look!"

She quickly got out of the water and darted over to the rock.

"Here." Høland took the towel he was carrying over his shoulder and held it towards her, still with his back to her, not looking. "Take this, you can't get dressed while still being soaking wet."

Setskogen gratefully accepted it. Her original plan had been to let the sun dry her before she got dressed.

"Thanks."

She quickly dried herself and then got dressed.

"There, you can turn around now." She said as she buttoned up the last button. He turned around and she couldn't avoid noticing the little smile curling up at the corners of his mouth.

"So. You had to cool down after a long, warm day at work too?"

She nodded.

"Yes, I've been longing for this all day. I've come here a few times after work during the summer." She admitted and ran a hand through her wet hair. "But I didn't think anyone else was using this spot. At least I've never seen anyone here. Until now…" she added and felt her face heat up.

"I usually just take a quick wash in the tub or the sink, but sometimes if it's a very warm day, I sometimes go here to take a refreshing dip in the lake." He said. "I discovered this spot a few years ago, and I didn't think anyone else knew about it. But apparently you did." He added with a little smile.

He sat down in the green grass and motioned for her to sit next to him. She hesitated for a moment, before sitting down, wondering why he wanted her to stay. As far as she knew he tried to avoid her.

She picked a white marguerite and started picking the petals off it, one by one.

"You didn't see anything, did you?" she gave him an unsure glance. He laughed.

"No, you can relax, I didn't even get a tiny peek." He started taking off his shoes. "How are you, by the way? After what happened with that drunkard, I mean…"

Setskogen was surprised that he was suddenly so talkative. Maybe it was because they were alone, she thought. Nobody else was nearby to judge them or make up rumours.

"I'm fine." She said. "Thanks to you."

She saw a flash of something that looked like anger ghosting his face.

"I had problems stopping myself from beating him more than necessary…" he said between clenched teeth. "You haven't encountered him again?"

"No, he seems to avoid me. And I thought you did too, by the way." She added, unable to resist. Høland's face turned red.

"I don't… I've just had a lot to do. I've barely had time to eat." He said apologetic.

Setskogen studied him suspiciously. He probably had many skills, Høland, but lying wasn't one of them. She decided to drop it.

"How is life treating you otherwise?" he had removed his shoes and socks and wiggled his naked toes.

"Good." She replied, a bit too quickly. He looked curiously at her. Maybe she wasn't a good liar herself, she might as well just tell him the truth. She inhaled deeply and exhaled slowly.

"No, not really… my landlord has raised the rent and I have to work extra shifts to cover it, and it's just a bit hard… and then there is Urskog who is not feeling well, and I…"

"… have to cover for her too." He ended for her. She nodded.

Setskogen was surprised by how easy it was talking to him. She usually didn't open up for people, only those closest to her. But something about Høland made her feel safe and feel like she could be herself.

"I'm sorry. You deserve better." He put a hand on her shoulder and gave her a warm smile. Setskogen felt her heart pound hard in her chest as a reaction to his touch. "Urskog is lucky to have a friend like you."

She smiled and looked humbly down.

The sat there chatting for a while, getting to know each other.

But suddenly he stood up, and she gave him a confused look. Was he leaving?

"I have to get in before I melt!" he explained when he saw her confused stare.

His shirt dropped to the ground and he was opening his belt to removed his pants.

Setskogen desperately tried to look away, but was unable to. Her eyes were glued to his muscular, sun tanned body, and she felt a sweet chill run through her body.

At last he stood in front of her, wearing only his underpants. He didn't bother wading, instead he ran over to a rock and performed an elegant dive into the deep water. He popped up a few meters away and cheered joyously.

"Wonderful!"

He dove under the surface again. Setskogen chuckled to herself. He was like a kid, she thought.

He came swimming towards her and climbed back on land again. The water dripped from him as he took the towel and started drying himself.

Setskogen felt warm by the thought of him using the very same towel she has used to dry her own naked body just moments earlier. Had he forgot, or didn't he care? She guessed the latter.

She noticed the dark strip of hair running from his belly button into his underpants. She felt embarrassed and moved her stare to the water.

What if anyone came and found them here? She thought, worried. Høland bathing in only his underwear and a girl sitting there, watching, with wet hair. What would they think?

She prayed that nobody would see them together, and nobody else knew about this place. Then she told herself she should go home now. Yet she remained sitting.

Høland came over and sat down next to her again. He had wrapped the towel around his waist and let his upper body remain naked. He smelled like summer and sun, she thought.

Setskogen wanted to unbutton her blouse a bit, but she didn't. It wasn't appropriate. Besides, he had already seen more of her than he should, she suddenly remembered and felt the blush run over her face again. She suspected Høland just being polite when he said he hadn't seen anything.

"I should probably go home now." She said and stood up.

"Allow me to get dressed, so I can tag along." He smiled, and she nodded. "No peeking!" he teased and chuckled. She flushed red and quickly turned away.

It was another warm day at the railway, but this day they were filling up the coal and wood shed, so everyone were carrying firewood into it, to stock up for the next week.

It was hard work, but everyone joined in, so they would be done before the dark fell upon them.

...

A butterfly came fluttering and landed on Setskogen's bare arm. It was beautiful with its orange and black pattern and she studied it for a while until it flew away.

She picked up the work again and threw stolen glances towards Høland. He was so handsome!
He had taken his shirt off, and his tanned upper body was shiny from sweat. His dark brown hair was a mess. The muscles in his arms tightened everytime he picked up another load. He pulled a hand through his hair, to get it out of his eyes, but it didn't help much.

Her eyes were drawn to the dark strip of hair starting at his belly button, running into his pants. She swallowed hard and felt the heat spread through her body.
Subconciously she licked her lip and sighed. She looked up again and stared right into two dark eyes. She looked away and blushed. Had he noticed how she was staring at him?

Setskogen just couldn't resist looking at him again. He was standing, chuckling at her, he had definitely noticed her admiration. She smiled embarrassed before looking away. She could literally feel his stare burning her back as she leaned down to pick up more wood. The butterflies in her stomach made her admit to herself that she was a bit captivated by the handsome railworker.

Again and again she was surprised by the desire and feelings that flared up in her everytime he was nearby. No matter how wrong it was, she couldn't help it. She just couldn't allow herself to get carried away and do something she would regret later. She was dating Bjørkelangen, but it didn't hurt anyone if she was just looking, right?

...

Høland was unable to pull his stare away as Setskogen bent over to pick up more firewood from the ground.
The thin fabric of her overalls tightened over her rounded butt, the sight made him short of breath. She had curves in all the right places.

Suddenly the memory of two pink nipples, perky and erect, flashed before his inner eye. He had caught a glimpse of her breasts that night by the lake. It was a sight he wouldn't forget anytime soon.

There was no denying the female railworker stirred up feelings in him. Was it love, or were he just taken by her beauty, he wasn't sure. He hadn't known her long enough to have fallen in love with her. At least that was what he tried to convince himself of.

Høland walked over to the waterpost, filling up his cup to drink. The water was lukewarm and not very refreshing. He looked forward to the lunch break so they could sit in the shade and maybe get something cold to drink along with their food.

His train of thought was broken by a shrill scream. He spun around and saw Setskogen lying on the grass, clutching her leg. Her face contorted with pain. He dropped his cup and sprinted over to her.

"What happened!?" he knelt down and removed her hand. Two red spots were clearly visible on her pale skin, and he knew instantly what had happened. "Damn!" he exclaimed.

Setskogen wailed as he touched the snakebite on her leg. He stood up, lifting her up in his arms and started carrying her towards their living quarters. She put her arms around his neck and leaned her head heavily against his chest.

Høland rested his chin on top of her head. On the outside he was calm, but his insides were in turmoil. He knew people had died from the bite of a European viper. He had to get the doctor, fast!

Bjørkelangen came running up behind him, having noticed something was amiss.

"Go fire up my engine!" he shouted to his brother. "Urskog has to look after her while I go to get the doctor!"

Urskog was cleaning the floor in the hallway when he came barging in with Setskogen in his arms.

"She's been bitten by a viper." He explained as he walked to the nearest bed. Urskog followed close behind.
Høland laid her carefully down and put a pillow under her head. Then he put a couple of pillows under her leg and asked Urskog to find a wet towel. He knew it was important to keep the foot up. Urskog ran to the kitchen to find the towel.

Høland sat down on the edge of the bed and looked down at Setskogen pale, sweaty face. He removed a few stray hairs from her face with his hand.

"It will be okay, Skauen." He said comfortingly. "Urskog will care for you while I go get the doctor."

She gave him a brave smile and nodded but didn't say a word.

Urskog soon came sprinting with a cold, damp cloth, placing it gently on Setskogen's forehead.

"Make sure she stays hydrated." Høland said as he stood up and swiftly left the room.

...

The doctor met their worried glances as he closed the door behind him after having examined Setskogen.

The elderly man carried his medical bag in one hand and scratched his beard with the other. He looked serious, Høland thought, though he always did.

Høland, Bjørkelangen and Urskog had been standing patiently waiting outside while the doctor looked after Setskogen in her room.

"She's doing fine and will be back on her feet in a couple of days." The doctor said.

Høland let out a sigh of relief.

"She has to keep her foot still until the swelling has gone down. The best would be if she stays where she is until she has recovered." The doctor continued.

They all nodded.

"That won't be a problem. The boys will cover for her at work, and I will make sure she gets food and water."

"Great." The doctor was about to leave. "Make sure she doesn't move too much and that she stays hydrated."

Those were his last words before leaving and closing the door behind him.

...

Setskogen squinted against the sharp light from the window. It took her a moment to understand where she was and what had happened.

Oh no! They had so much to do! She couldn't stay here… she had to help!

She sat up and swung her feet onto the floor. Her eyes fell on the foot, blue and swollen around the snakebite.

"And where do you think you're going?"

Setskogen jumped at the sound of the stern voice and turned towards the door. Urskog came towards her with a friendly smile.

"You're not supposed to move around, young lady." She stated and pushed her firmly back into the bed. Setskogen groaned.

"But I have work to do. And I'm not patient enough to lay here all day." She said and tried to sound convinving. Though she didn't even know if she was able to walk on her foot, she would probably find a way.

"Forget it." Urskog said. "The doctor said you have to stay in bed until the swelling has gone down. You stay here until your foot has healed."

"But…" Setskogen protested. "My job and…"

"The boys cover your shifts." Urskog cut her off.

"I have to pull my weight…"

Urskog took her hand. "Don't worry. The management has been informed and the boys will manage a few days of extra workload. They sent their best wishes."

"Okay okay. I guess I don't have much of a choice then." Setskogen gave her a curt smile.

"Correct." Urskog smiled back. "Now just rest. I'll bring you something to eat later."

Setskogen closed her eyes and tried to ignore the hammering pain in her leg. She could as well try to get some sleep to pass time.

...

Setskogen felt a lot better after having eaten and slept for a few hours, it was night. Maybe she should try go to the sink and freshen up a bit? It was tempting. She felt clammy and icky after spending the whole day in bed.

...

Høland was twisting and turning in bed. He just couldn't sleep in the hot summer night, and if he were to be honest with himself, the thought of Setskogen in the room next to his, only a few meters away, also contributed to keep him awake.

The window was wide open, but there was no cool air at all. Heat wave.

He pushed the think blanket aside and placed he feet on the floor, pulled on his pants and walked to the door. His mouth felt dry, and he had forgotten to bring a cup of water when he went to bed.

He crossed the creaking floor, but as he reached the kitchen door he heard a noise that made him stop and listen. There it was again.

From the adjacent room, he heard a groan followed by a low whimper. Was Setskogen alright? He snuck over to her door. Should he peek inside? Maybe she needed help? Or maybe she was just having a nightmare or was talking in her sleep.

For a while he was just standing there, contemplating what to do. But as he heard another whimper he pushed the door open.

He was surprised to find the bed empty, but then he spotted a movement at the corner of his eye. On the floor by the drawer Setskogen was sitting, clutching her swollen leg.

He hurried over to her.

"What are you doing? You're supposed to stay in bed!"

Setskogen sent him an apologetic look.

"I just wanted to… or, I was thinking of cleaning myself up a bit. I thought I would be able to walk on my foot, but it didn't go that well. And now I can't get anywhere at all." She sighed.

Høland had to smile.

"You're impossible. You should have waited till the morning, Urskog could have helped you."

"Yes, thank you! I know that now!" she barked, but has to smile when she met his dejected stare.

He shook his head and lifted her up.

"You're a stubborn little missy, Setskogen."

Høland carried her over to the bed and put her gently down. Setskogen quickly covered her naked legs with the blanket.

He walked over to the sink, found a clean towel and wet it before her returned to the bed to give it to her.

"Thanks." She said shy, accepting it, instantly running it over her face and neck before putting it back on the nightstand. She would clean the rest of her body when he had left.

Høland noticed the midnight blue eyes lingering on his naked upper body. If he had known he would meet other people, he would have put a shirt on, but he hadn't expected it, given he was only going to get a glass of water. Though it probably didn't matter as she had seen him shirtless during work many times.

He sat down on the edge of the bed, studying the beautiful girl. Her thick, black hair flowing over her shoulders. He had seen her with her hair loose once before, by the lake. He liked it. It made her even prettier.

He could have spent hours staring into her big midnight blue eyes, they were gorgeous, radiating strength and determination.

Her white night gown complimented her look. The top buttons were open, revealing sun tanned skin. He looked at the two nipples, pressing against the thin fabric of her gown and felt a stirring in his pants.

"How are you doing?" he asked, desperately trying to kill the desire that flared up inside him.

"Apart from this leg, I'm doing great." She replied dry.

Høland had understood that she didn't like being idle. She was used to hard work and didn't it when she had nothing to do.

"I understand that you don't like lying in bed all day, but if you want you leg to heal as fast as possible, you have to stay where you are. Completely still." He tried to sound stern, but didn't quite succeed.

"Being stern doesn't suit you." She said with a smile, making him laugh. "But you're right, I should remain still. It's just so insanely boring. And I feel bad for just laying here when I should help restocking the coal and wood sheds."

The stare she gave him was so melancholic he instantly felt an urge to comfort her. He took her hand in his.

"Don't feel bad about that. It's not your fault that viper bit you." He caressed her hand with his thumb. "Can I have a look at your leg?"

Setskogen nodded, tugging the blanket aside.

The leg was swollen, and the area around the bite has turned blue, but it seemed like the swelling had gone down a bit and he took that as a good sign.

"It looks like it's going the right way." He said.

"I've forgotten to thank you." She gave him an apologetic look.

"You don't have to."

"If you hadn't carried me inside and gotten the doctor that fast, it could have gone a lot worse." She said gratefully.

"I'm just glad you're doing well."

Høland looked deep into her eyes and stroked her cheek. A chill ran through his body as their stares locked into each other. He was unable to resist anymore. He leaned forward and put his lips carefully against hers.

Her lips were soft and moist, and she tasted so insanely good. Setskogen didn't push him away, quite the opposite. He felt her tongue slip into his mouth, and he could feel his pants grow even tighter. He cupped her face between her hands and kissed her deeper.

He slid a hand down, unbuttoning a couple more buttons in her gown, sneaking a hand inside. He found a naked breast, squeezing it lightly. It was round and perky, and the erect nipple poked his hand. Setskogen moaned into his mouth and kissed him more passionately.

Good grief, how he desired her! He had dreamt of how it would feel to kiss her, but not even in his wildest fantasies had he imagined it to be this wonderful!

Setskogen put her arms around Høland's neck, pulling him towards her. He moaned, pushed her down into the bed and climbed on top of her.

She felt his rockhard erection against her thigh and moaned again. Her brain was screaming for her to stop, but her body wouldn't listen.

Høland broke the intense kiss only to start sprinkling tiny kisses down her neck. He opened her night gown, exposing one of her breasts, taking the nipple into his mouth. Setskogen whimpered in lust, running a hand through his hair.

He placed soft kisses all over her chest and neck before locking lips with her again, kissing her deeply.

Suddenly she regained her sanity. What was she doing?! She wasn't supposed to kiss anyone but Bjørkelangen! She pulled away.

"Wait, we can't…" she was panting heavy and noticed her lips being wet and swollen after the delightful kiss.

He quickly sat up, running a hand through his messy hair.

"Forgive me, I shouldn't have… but you're so wonderful, and I just couldn't resist anymore." He stuttered. "Ever since I first saw you, you've been in my mind day and night." He sighed heavy.

Setskogen gave him a reassuring smile.

"You were right about me avoiding you…" he continued. "I thought it was for the best, that I would stop thinking of you… But I realize now that it's impossible."

"I wanted it too…" she said when she saw his pained expression. "But I'm committed to your brother and we can't..."

Høland nodded and scratched his neck. Then he stood up, leaned down and kissed her forehead before telling her good night.

Setskogen stared after him when he left, and the door closed behind him.

What on earth had just happened? How could she allow herself to lose control like that? She couldn't fathom it. He had been so soft and good, and that kiss… That kiss was unlike anything she had ever felt before.

Was she in love with Høland? Setskogen thought about it and hesitantly had to admit to herself that she was falling for him. But she couldn't, she loved Bjørkelangen! Was it possible to be in love with them both at the same time?

She pulled the blanket over her head and groaned. She was in love with two men! But it didn't matter. Bjørkelangen belonged to her and they had planned on getting married. She and Høland could never become a thing.

Setskogen felt sick. What a despicable human being she was!

...

A few weeks later.

They had been avoiding each other ever since that night in her room, though it was difficult due to them living in the same house and working at the same railway.

It was Saturday night and it was Setskogen's turn to cook dinner. She was making smoked salmon with scrambled eggs and fresh bread.

Only Høland and Urskog were home tonight. The others were working night shift.

She cut some spring onion, sprinkling it over the food before carrying the plates into the dining room, where Urskog had set the table and lit some candles to make it cozier than the weekdays. The flames flickered as she walked past them. Everything was ready now.

She heard steps across the floor, and not long after, Høland came in. He smiled upon seeing her.

"This looks nice." He threw a hungry glance at the food.

"Urskog has a migraine and didn't want any food." He added.

"Oh…" was all Setskogen managed to say.

"But we can enjoy the food anyway?" he gave her a hopeful look.

"I shouldn't…" Setskogen felt her hand get all clammy by the thought of sitting here, eating with him, just the two of them alone.

"Of course, you can. It's just dinner." He looked at her with a vivid spark in his eyes. Her mouth curled up in a smile.

"Okay, but you will regret it. I'm not funny or entertaining. You'll be bored to death." She giggled.

He laughed as he walked over, pulling out the chair for her. After helping her get seated, he walked over to the cupboard, picking out two glasses and a bottle of wine before getting seated across the table from her. He poured wine for them both and put one of the glasses in front of her.

She felt nervous. What if they didn't come up with anything to talk about and there would be this awkward silence. She despised those situations.

She worried for no reason. The conversation flowed easily, and they talked about everything between heaven and earth. Setskogen felt herself relaxing more and more. The food was good, and she had to admit she enjoyed his company.

They kept talking long after they had finished their food.

"I want to know everything about you, Skauen. Can you tell me a bit more about yourself?"

Setskogen glanced nervously down at her hands. She hated talking about herself. She feared that the one she spoke to would be bored, or that they would think of her as self-centered since she was talking about herself. But he had asked her to…

"I don't really know what to say…" she said reluctantly. "What do you want to know? Ask me something instead, and I'll answer."

He looked at her with a lopsided smile.

"Alright." He thought for a moment. "What's your favorite color?"

"Green." She replied.

"Same!"

Setskogen smiled.

"What's your favorite food?"

"That has to be the soup Urskogen makes sometimes… with veggies and salted meat." She felt her mouth water just by thinking of it. "What's your favorite?" she countered.

"Oh no, you don't!" he chortled. "Now we're talking about YOU!"

She rolled her eyes dejectedly.

"Any family?"

"Only my father, Jo. But he's dead."

He sent her a sympathetic glance.

"I'm so sorry. Do you want to talk about it?"

Setskogen shook her head, even after all these years, it was still hard to cope with the loss.

"Ask me something else." She pleaded.

"Do you prefer day time or night time?"

Setskogen didn't even have to think twice.

"Night time. I love sitting on the stairs outside or in the window sill, looking at the stars. I love searching for the constellations. Did you know that Ursa Major's tail is the handle of the Big Dipper?"

It suddenly dawned to her that she talked too much. She was babbling away, totally unlike her.

Høland was looking at her curiously, as smile playing at the corner of his mouth.

"No, I didn't know that. You're really a unique woman, Setskogen." He said softly.

Høland's brown eyes stared deep into her midnight blue. Her heart skipped a beat.

"I don't think I've ever met anyone like you. You make me feel comfortable." He smiled warmly. "You make me laugh, and it's really nice to be able to laugh with someone."

Setskogen looked down, shy.

"I have to confess something." He added.

Setskogen looked up, waiting for him to continue.

"I can't stop thinking of you." He said low.

Setskogen felt the joy bubbling inside her, but at the same time a little voice popped up in her head, warning her to be careful. She was aware that she was playing with fire now.

"Høland…" she wasn't able to finish her sentence, only gave him a pleading look.

"I just have to ask you… I just have to know… Or…" he interrupted himself, apparently having problems finding the right words. "I'm really captivated by you, to say it mildly, and I suspect it might be mutual. Or am I wrong?"

She didn't respond right away. She should have denied it, but she knew it would be pointless. He could see right through her.

"It's impossible. We can't. We're not allowed." She said, sighing. "I love Bjørkelangen, and I don't want to hurt him…"

Setskogen glanced over to him. His eyes had a desperate gleam in them.

"You love your brother too, right?"

He dragged a hand over his face.

"Yes, I do. But…" he shook his head helplessly. "I can't help it… I've fallen for you."

Høland took her hand in his. His touched made her feel air headed as usual. The air between them was loaded with tension. A tension she had been aware of since the first time she met him. It occurred every time they were near each other.

"What do we do now?" he asked, looking at her.

Setskogen ran her thumb over his hand.

"Nothing." She felt the tears prickle her eyelids; she was about to cry. "Maybe our feelings will die out on their own sometime in the future." She added. "That would be best."

Høland looked devastated.

"I know you're right, but…" he sighed. "At least I get to be nearby you. It would have felt worse if you wouldn't be around in my life at all. That would have been unbearable."

His words warmed her heart, but they also saddened her.

"I think I should go now."

Setskogen drank the last of her wine before she let go of his hand and stood up.

Høland stood up too.

"Can't you stay just a little bit longer?" he pleaded.

"No. It's late. I should go to bed."

He followed her into the hallway, watching her walk down the long corridor to her room.

Setskogen was about to open her door, when she felt two strong around grab her shoulders and turn her around. Høland pulled her against him, embracing her.

She put her arms around his strong back, closing her eyes, standing like that for a long time.

Setskogen drew in the scent of him and noticed him doing the same to her. Then he pulled away from her, cupped her face in his hands and kissed her.

He tears rolled down both her cheeks, while his kiss made her tremble. Being strong sure wasn't easy right now.

This was madness! His brother, her boyfriend, could come home anytime soon. And still she allowed this to happen. She couldn't resist. What a weak and horrible human she was!

After what seemed like an eternity, but in real was just a few seconds, she found the strength to break the kiss.

She stormed inside her room without looking back.

This was never, never going to happen again.

...

The summerheat had lasted for weeks, and Setskogen went to her secret spot by the lake to cool down as often as she could.

She had avoided Høland as much as she could since that heated kiss outside her room, but he still didn't leave her mind, and her feelings burned as intensely as ever before. She felt a pang of guilt. She really wished it were only Bjørkelangen occupying her mind. Sometimes she even wished Høland had never come to the railway. Then they would never have met.

If only her heart could stop beating for him. It would have made everything so much easier…

Setskogen used to tell herself that as longs as she and Høland stayed away from each other, they didn't do anything wrong. It wasn't illegal to daydream about someone else, but she realized it was wrong. She sighed. Life sure wasn't easy!

Some hours after work, she was on her way down to the lake. The workday had been long and warm, and already early noon she had decided to go take a cooling swim after work.

She followed the bendy path down through the forest, getting a much-desired break from the scorching sun. They had an incredibly warm and nice summer, even if it could be almost unbearable to work in the heat.

At last, she reached the secret spot. She threw a few glances around, then she let her hair down and undressed. She neatly folded her clothes, putting them on the rock. She was a little bit reluctant to swim nude now that she knew she wasn't the only one to know of this place, but decided she wanted to do it anyway. Bathing with her clothes on just wasn't the same. Besides, the chances of running into Høland again was slim, given that it had only happened once through all the years she had come here.

She waded out until the water reached her waist, then threw herself forward in a swim.

The water was delightfully cold, and she savored the cool feeling of it against her warm skin. She leaned backwards, floating on her back while looking up at the sky.

...

Høland stopped dead in his tracks. He was certain he had seen movements between the dense foliage.

Carefully he walked closer to the lakeshore, and sure enough there was a girl standing in the tall grass with her back turned to him as she got dressed.

Her long, black hair hung wet and heavy down her back. Then she pulled her blouse on and started buttoning it.

He felt his heart racing and palms feel clammy when she turned around. She was so inconceivably beautiful with that long, thick hair, sun tanned skin and big midnight-blue eyes.

He realized he should have given her a sign that he was near, but instead he remained silent, just standing there, studying her. Her round, perky breasts disappeared little by little as she buttoned up her shirt.

He felt how he longed for her with all of his body and soul.

Suddenly she looked up and looked straight at him, obviously surprised and bashful, she hurried buttoning the last buttons of her shirt.

Høland flushed red. He had been caught peeking.

Setskogen felt the blush spread all over her face.

How long had he been standing there watching her? Had he seen her naked? The thought was sort of titillating, yet it made her ashamed.

"Good evening, Skauen." He walked over to her.

"Good evening." She met his stare.

"I didn't see much." He said as if he had read her mind.

"Not much? What did you see then…?" she looked up at him. He smiled lopsided.

"I caught a glimpse of two perfect breasts before they disappeared under the fabric of your shirt." His smile grew wider. She couldn't turn any redder. She looked down at the ground.

His words made her body tingle. She hated admitting it, but she liked the thought of him peeking at her.

Høland put a hand under her chin, lifting it so she had to meet his stare again.

"You make me long for you so much it drives me crazy, Skauen. All I want is to have you in my arms, feel your body against mine and become one with you."

Setskogen bit her lip. She wanted the same, but she didn't want to admit it.

Suddenly he put his lips over hers, kissing her passionately. When he pulled away, her lips were swollen and moist after the craving kiss. She swallowed hard, putting his hand on the top button of her shirt.

"Do you want to see more?"

He nodded silently as she allowed him to unbutton it, until her breasts were visible again. He folded the fabric aside, revealing a perky nipple. Carefully he took placed a hand on her naked breast. She moaned low.

Her nipple hardened by his touch and Setskogen felt how a sweet tingle spread in her crotch. He was arousing her.

Suddenly she had an overwhelming urge to be near him. She couldn't resist any more. Frantically, she started unbuttoning his shirt, with his help. Carefully she put her lips against his naked chest, letting her hands run down his body, feeling him up.

He pulled her shirt off until she only had her underwear on. For a moment he just stood there, staring at her. His obvious desire was extremely arousing to her.

He kicked off his shoes and peeled off his clothes until he stood naked before her.

Then he lifted her up and walked over to a patch of grass. He gently put her down under a big birch. He slowly took off the rest of her clothes until she laid there naked in front of him. She smiled; the grass was comfortable to lay on.

Høland laid down next to her, and for a while he just laid there, looking at her. Then he moved his hand up to her breast again.

Setskogen did no attempts on stopping him. It was no use anyway; they were far past the point where it was possible to stop.

He laid on top of her, kissing her slowly. Setskogen pressed herself against him, he was an amazing kisser, and she couldn't get close enough to him. He kissed her neck and continued down her body. Setskogen felt her body trembling.

"Are you sure you want this, Skauen?"

She nodded silently and let out a low lustful wail as he penetrated her. It felt so much different from her previous experiences. She was ready this time, well lubricated, making the usual pain of intrusion non-existent. This was wonderful, there was only pleasure – nothing else.

Høland slid in and out of her in a steady rhythm, and she couldn't get enough of him. He kissed her, looking into her eyes with a clouded stare.

Then something started building up inside her, something and unknown, yet wonderful, before an intense wave of pleasure crashed through her body. She moaned loudly, biting down on his shoulder, and not long after Høland bit his lip to stifle a moan, and collapsed on top of her.

Afterwards, they laid in the grass without saying a word. Setskogen laid on his arm, close to his body. They were both still naked.

She had a blissful feeling in her entire body. She had never felt this pleased and satisfied. It hadn't been like any of her other times, with pain and none of this wild, blissful… release at the end. This had been only nice and beautiful. Høland kissed the top of her head.

"Are you okay?" he looked down at her.

"Mmm… Yes." she smiled at him and gave him a light kiss on his mouth.

"Good. Any regrets?"

Setskogen considered his question.

"No. Not yet at least." she said honest.

She knew the guilt would start tearing her up later. But right now, she forced it away. This moment was sacred, and she wanted to enjoy it as long as it would last.

"Do you?" Setskogen ran a hand over his sun-tanned chest.

"No." the answer was quick and firm. "You and I have this incredibly strong attraction to each other. We've both tried to resist it, but today it became impossible." He stroked her hair. "I love you, Skauen. We belong together. But sadly, it's not that easy." He sighed. "Maybe you can become mine sometime in the future. Who knows?" he smiled sadly and pulled her closer.

Setskogen had no idea how they could ever become a thing, but she didn't say it. Didn't want to ruin the moment by thinking of Bjørkelangen. He was already standing between her and Høland like a looming shadow.

It was starting to get dark, and slowly the regrets was creeping up on her. Bjørkelangen would be livid if he came looking for her and found her in the arms of his brother.

She brutally pushed Høland away and sat up.

"I have to go home." she muttered, reaching for her clothes, ignoring his confusion to her brutal rejection.

"Can't you just stay a little bit longer?" he looked hopeful at her. "I haven't had a swim yet. Join me for a little while?"

She had to smile.

"I guess I have time for a quick swim…" she said. It would probably be the best to bathe after their moment together too, so Bjørkelangen wouldn't notice anything. She started walking to towards the water to wade out, but he grabbed her hand and dragged her over to the rock he used to dive from.

"Let's jump! Come!"

Setskogen looked puzzled.

"I don't know, Høland… I prefer…"

"It's nothing to be afraid of." he cut her off. "We'll jump together. I'll hold your hand."

A bit reluctant she followed him towards the rock. She stared into the water, trying to spot the bottom, but it was too deep.

"Are you ready?" Høland looked at her.

"No, not really."

He laughed.

"I'll count to three, then we'll jump." They walked to the edge and got ready to jump. "One. Two. Three!"

They leaped into the green water. A tiny shriek escaped Setskogen as she fell through the air, before landing in the water with a splash.

They looked at each other and laughed after re-surfacing. Setskogen swam into his arms. She clinged to him and enjoyed the last minutes of closeness.

They had put their clothes back on and were ready to go when Høland suddenly stopped.

"Wait a moment." he pulled her over to the birch they had be lying under earlier, picked out a pocketknife, knelt and started carving something into it.

"What are you doing?" Setskogen looked puzzled.

"You'll see." he smiled secretively.

After a moment, he stood up. "There."

Setskogen leaned forward and to her surprise there was a tiny heart carved into the tree. She got all warm and fuzzy inside.

"It's a heart."

He put an arm around her and pulled her close.

"Yes. Every time I visit this place in the future, I will go look at it and think back at the beautiful moment we shared under this birch."

Setskogen leaned against his chest. "That's a nice thought."

He kissed the top of her head.

"We should get going."

The sun had gone down, and it was getting quite dark. Luckily, the moon lit up the path in front of them.

Setskogen was cold, but Høland put an arm around her and pulled her close. It helped.

For a while they just walked in silence, deep in thought. When they reached the yard, they stopped behind the engine sheds where they couldn't be seen from the living quarters. It was dark outside, so nobody would see them anyway.

Høland put his arms around her and held her in a tender embrace.

"Thanks for tonight, Skauen. It was wonderful." he pulled away a bit, so he could see her face, but he didn't let go of her. "I'll always remember the moment we shared down by the lake. I'll cherish it for as long as I'll live."

Setskogen felt tears stinging behind her eyelids and felt a growing lump in her throat.

"Same." she stroked a hand over his cheek. "Thanks for being so gentle and affectionate to me."

She smiled.

"It's the first time I've… reached the top, and you made it a beautiful and special experience I'll never forget."

Høland smiled and gave her a tender kiss.

Then they walked in separate directions to avoid being seen together.

As Setskogen reached the house, the guilt came washing over her and the severity of what she had done came to her.

She had slept with a man while belonging to someone else. She was an adulterer.

How could she do this to Bjørkelangen? Everyone else on the railway would despise her if they got to know what she had done.

Setskogen sat down on the stairs. She had to gather her thoughts before going inside to the others.

She turned her gaze to the sky. Through the tears she could see a myriad of blinking stars up there. So incredibly far away.

Setskogen thought of those who sat up there looking down at her. Her mother, her father and everyone else she had lost. She hoped they had been busy today, that they hadn't noticed what she had done. They would have been so disappointed in her. Setskogen couldn't hold back her tears any longer.

How was she supposed to be able to live with herself after this? Should she tell Bjørkelangen? He probably wouldn't want anything more to do with her if he got to know. But she couldn't let him marry her without letting him know what kind of person she really was, could she?

Setskogen didn't know what to do. Maybe it was best for Bjørkelangen not to know. It was probably the best for everyone. But could she live the rest of her life carrying a lie? She didn't know.

Only one thing she knew for sure. From now on Bjørkelangen was going to be the only one for her. She would hide Høland and the moment they had shared in her heart, but never again would she do anything that could hurt Bjørkelangen. She and Høland would have to stay away from each other.

They had probably known it, both she and Høland, that it would be only that one time. That was why she had forced the guilt away down by the lake, that was why she had wanted to enjoy the moment to the fullest. Because it was the first and the last time, they would be together like that. From now on, she would be faithful to Bjørkelangen till the day she died.

She spotted someone walking across the yard towards her. It was Urskog. She was dressed in her nightgown and her blonde hair was hanging softly around her shoulders. In the dim moonlight it looked like an angel was standing before her. Urskog kind of was an angel, Setskogen thought. An angel on earth.

Silently, Urskog sat down next to her on the stairs. Then she put an arm around her and pulled her close.

Setskogen sobbed against Urskog's chest while the older woman hugged her.

"There, there, young one." She whispered comfortingly and stroked her hair, which was still wet from the bath. "Do you want to talk about it?"

Setskogen shook her head. She couldn't tell Urskog what she had done. She wouldn't understand, she had only loved one man her entire life. How would she possibly understand that Setskogen loved two men? She didn't understand it herself.

"You know you can tell me anything, Skauen. I don't judge, I have no right to do so."

As so many times before it surprised Setskogen how Urskog seemed to be able to know exactly what she was thinking.

"I know, Urskog. Maybe some other time."

For a long while they just sat there on the stairs, arms around each other. Setskogen felt a bit better now. Urskog was such a blessing, she thought.

Urskog kissed her forehead motherly.

"Go to bed now, my child. Life will look brighter when you wake up tomorrow morning."

Setskogen nodded.

They stood up and hugged each other. Setskogen dried her tears before opening the door and sneaking inside. The others were probably asleep now.

She hoped Urskog would be right, that everything would look brighter after a good night's sleep, but deep inside she doubted it. She knew her conscience would bother her for a long time, maybe even for as long as she would live.

The end...?
