Mariposa kept her visions to herself after that night. Even Abuela, the same woman who taught the family to use what they'd been given, ignored the gift. As far as she was concerned, like Mirabel, Mariposa didn't have one.
Then came Antonio's big night. Mariposa had been dreading it ever since he was born. She was afraid it would trigger another powerful vision that would change everyone's lives. But, Mirabel was stubborn and wouldn't let Mariposa stay out of things. She remembered when her cousin was helpful in preventing little accidents when they were decorating and wanted to make sure Mariposa did it again.
Mariposa loved her cousin's enthusiasm and couldn't say no when asked to help. There weren't too many accidents to prevent, so she mostly spent time chatting with Mirabel. That morning, Mariposa had a vision that involved Mirabel, but never intended to tell her about it. It reminded her of the one Bruno had the night he left, but a little different. The house cracked around her, like before, but then disappeared. Spending so much time with Mirabel during the day made Mariposa feel so at ease that she felt like saying something.
"Mirabel, I have something to tell you. Well, actually, first I have something to give you. Promise not to open it until tomorrow, though."
Earlier that day, Mariposa had a small vision of a private moment Mirabel and Antonio would share and decided to draw it. When she examined it, it just seemed like something Mirabel would want, a great way to remember the bond between her and Antonio.
Mirabel flashed Mariposa one of her signature grins. "I promise."
Mariposa handed her the drawing which she had framed and wrapped. "Oh, and one more thing. Fallen tiles are very sharp. Don't pick one up unless you want to cut your hand. And what you're going to see tonight isn't your imagination, but I don't recommend telling anyone."
"Okay…"
"You probably don't remember that my gift-"
"Of course I remember that you see the future. It's only like the coolest gift ever!"
"Then you'll listen?"
"I can try."
"I'm just going to say it again for emphasis, fallen tiles are sharp and will cut you."
"Got it."
"Good. Then I better head back to my room before everything starts."
"You're not coming?"
"I'd rather not."
"Please come… I'll be there and who better to spend time with than me? It'll make you feel special…"
"Okay, okay, you win."
Mariposa smiled. Mirabel always did have a way to make her feel special. Mirabel had a way to make everyone feel special.
"But I won't stay long, one dance."
"Three?"
"Two. Final offer."
Mirabel smiled. "Two dances, you got it."
Once she had danced twice, Mariposa prepared to leave. She could tell Mirabel was upset, which was understandable, given everything that happened. But the vision occurred when Mirabel left the party for some time to process everything, so Mariposa wanted to make sure she was gone before it happened.
"Okay, I've danced twice," Mariposa whispered to Mirabel, "Now I'm off to bed."
"Not having fun?"
"Of course I'm having fun, I'm just…tired."
"Sounds suspicious, but okay."
"And Mirabel?"
"Yes?"
"Don't forget what I told you. Fallen tiles are sharp."
"Right… what fallen tiles?"
"You'll know when it's time to know."
"Okay… good night, I guess."
"Good night Mirabel. Again, fallen tiles are sharp, don't pick them up."
Mariposa left Antonio's room and headed toward hers. "I mean it. Tiles- sharp- don't touch."
She poked her head in one last time. "Tiles- sharp-"
