Chapter 11

A Dance in Yunping

The unrelenting training of Meishan Yu Sect disciples started without a hitch from dawn and continued on until the sun was high up in the sky. But despite the tiring regimen and even grave whispers of troubles elsewhere, the young men looked extremely lively and energetic. The reason behind this is not difficult to guess from the way various eyes kept on going to the small group of three young ladies currently resting after their own training on another distant training ground.

It's been several days but they still can't get over the accumulative beauty presented near them. The treat for their eyes caused the disciples, especially the young ones, to be full of energy.

"Ah, I can continue to live like this."

"How lucky, with our Shijie, Maiden Liu and Maiden Hou, it's like a gathering of goddesses."

"Our Young Mistress truly looks marvellous today, too."

"But the Maiden Liu shines brightly as well."

"And the lovely Maiden Hou makes it even better."

"Ah, if she weren't affianced, for sure, plenty would still be dreaming of her as well."

The disciples are excitedly buzzing as they made precise movements as taught by their esteemed young mistress.

With this silent commotion going on, the Third Lady of Meishan Yu couldn't help but notice it but immediately understood what the fuss is about. Red-violet eyes gazed at the slender female cultivator beside her and had to admit that she can hardly fault people for their admiring gazes.

Liu QingShan.

There's something truly enchanting about her, even tired and sweating profusely all over that jade-like skin, just the way she tilt her head and smile in exhaustion can disarm men. She's no longer surprised at the beauty of the famed Twin Jades of Lan. They had a good foundation.

But my children were more endearing. I'm sure of it…

With a small internal huff, Yu ZiYuan continued to wipe the sweat on her neck when a disciple came running to her.

The customary crease appeared between the elegant brows at the flustered state of the young disciple.

"Shijie!" the young man heaved before hastily straightening his posture since he knows their young mistress absolutely hates a slovenly and unrefined appearance before continuing with his report, "Um, First Young Master Lan, Second Young Master Lan, Young Master Jiang, Young Master Jin and Lady Sanren are here to see you…and I think I saw a few others in the distant horizon as well…"

The small frown evolved into a full on scowl at this news. Again?!

This is the fifth time in two weeks that several people with the steady attendance of the Lan heir kept coming to visit Meishan Yu.

It seems that they have far too much time in their hands, the Violet Spider couldn't help but grumble to herself. Shouldn't they be attending to the recent news? There's Jue di Gorge to worry them for sure!

Her dark eyes went to her two companions.

She can guess the reason of First Young Master Lan's persistent calls and now, even Young Master Jin is pestering her sight in order to get closer to his betrothed who still seems ready to cut him off.

But why is it that even Jiang FengMian frequently drops by when she absolutely needs to stop seeing his face!

"Don't look so excited, A-Yuan." Hou MeiXiu's teasing voice reached her then, "If you want, we can invite them over again tomorrow instead of them coming over every other day!"

This caused the narrowed violet eyes to grow even sharper but Yu ZiYuan just collected herself and sighed once before smiling thinly at her closest friend, "But if we do that, I'll have to cut your training sessions by half, A-Xiu, since I'll need time to entertain the others." She ended with her own brand of frigid humor.

"Guards! Immediately block the gates and tell the guests that all of us are not here!" Hou MeiXiu ordered at once after this threat which caused the quiet Liu QingShan to laugh slightly at their banter.

"Unfortunately, Shijie's popularity is not giving you too many favors right now." the angelic young lady who recently joined their sect sympathetically uttered, "If you so wish, I could distract them a while as you catch your breath, even if I find talking to the Lans rather unwelcome, or do you want me to hint that you find this all displeasing?"

This caused Yu ZiYuan to be rather speechless. After all this time, it seems that Liu QingShan remains unaware as to why these people are now disturbing her front door.

She can be a little dense, she concluded, seeing the tall young men in pristine uniforms approaching them, she lowered her voice, "Thank you, A-Shan. But helping me welcome them should be plenty."

"Maiden Yu, Maiden Hou and M-Maiden Liu, greetings. I hope we found you all in excellent health." A barely-holding-on-to-calm Lan Qiyue ceremoniously bowed with his taciturn brother doing the same a step behind him. Jin GuanShan also decorously saluted before going to his lady and getting promptly ignored.

After the appropriate words were said in reply, silence ensued and Yu ZiYuan wanted to glare at the skies for punishing her with these awkward beginnings every single time for the past two weeks.

Hou MeiXiu, who was keeping her silence to better observe the spectacle after figuring things out just after the first visit of the Lan heir, wanted to laugh at the uncomfortable countenance of all those in attendance. A-Yuan is unfeeling, QingShan is rather unwilling, First Young Master Lan is clumsy and Second Young Master Lan is content with just discreetly observing A-Yuan. What are they all even doing? How amusing! She thought before yanking the disgusting face of her husband-to-be away from her.

"Maiden Liu…I have some herbs that would be helpful in recovering strength, I hope you can accept them for your brother. I hope he is doing well?"

The placid expression on the graceful features of one Liu QingShan turned a tad bit colder at hearing the white-clad cultivator mention her brother again, "Thanking First Young Master Lan, but as I have mentioned before, Lady Yu helped us plenty and my brother has recovered from everything that had ailed him. We do not wish to continue troubling the young master over this."

Seeing the flustered young man and the icy young woman's interaction, Yu ZiYuan moved to the side and whispered to her friend who was enjoying the show while keeping her distance from her fiancé.

"Does she even realize why he's doing this?" Yu ZiYuan doesn't have any plans to interfere in this. It'll be admittedly good for the future if the righteous children of the Lans could come to life and with her currently good relationship with the woman she believes will become the future Madame Lan, it can only be advantageous for her eventual plans against the Wens. However, such a situation can only be resolved by the people involved themselves and she's aware enough that this department is not her strongest suit. She can offer her honest opinions if asked but she doesn't see why she should volunteer to help when she's more likely to make things worse. "I'm afraid A-Shan is a bit oblivious." she commented off-handedly.

This was received with a look from the First Young Lady of YunXiao sect, "YOU're saying that?" Lady Hou incredulously asked, YOU?!

"What?" Yu ZiYuan frowned after sensing a rather discourteous tone in her friend's voice.

"Lady Yu!" An extremely jovial voice reverberated across the space and caused the third daughter of Meishan Yu to nearly flinch. She's rather loath to admit how familiar that tone and voice has become. Every meeting has been filled with the talented young female cultivator accosting her and Yu ZiYuan had half a mind to hide away from those pairs of glittering grey eyes. She worked hard to keep her countenance blank as she turned around to meet the sound of additional footsteps headed their way.

However, instead of the pretty face of one Lady Sanren, her bright violet eyes clashed with the smiling ones of her ex-husband and she almost grimaced. She can account for the Lans and the miserable Jin but why is this one here again?!

She had no time to contemplate further when Cangse Sanren reached her with her usual enthusiastic greetings.

"Lady Yu!" Cangse Sanren made and quick salute before joyfully talking in a rush, "The weather's been great this pass two weeks. It's truly perfect for training. While you just finished yours, would it be alright if we—"

"Lady Sanren, if you please, it won't be good to trouble Maiden Yu with sudden invitations to train when she's just finished and we just arrived." The smiling Jiang FengMian lightly interrupted before respectfully saluting, "Greetings Maiden Yu. I hope you've been well?"

Yu ZiYuan returned the salutations and wondered what he could possibly expect to happen so soon when they just met three days ago, "I've been well, Young Master Jiang. I hope that you're doing good as well."

So focused was she to keep her rabbiting heart under control that she didn't notice how the young woman in front of her shuddered at the silent warning in the voice of the complacent-looking young master behind her.

The rogue cultivator as well as Wei Changze, who wanted to turn telepathic in order to remind their guest of the recent debacle at home, sweat-dropped at the recollection of the past few days.

'Young lord, leave it to me. I know of your good character and it would make me happy if you find your happiness in love, too.'

Bright eyes and a confident smile.

'Trust in me! I will absolutely be of help!'

Those were the words that Lady Sanren, an innocent young lady who truly wishes to push for the horse that she bet on to win, said to the grateful young master in purple. And therefore planned to sell him quite persistently to his lady, give them plenty of chances to converse and fend off any nuisance on the next opportunity…

Jiang FengMian started amicably one fine day, 'Maiden Yu regarding the next night-hunt—'

Enter Cangse Sanren who burst in the middle therefore cutting him off, 'Lady Yu! Do you have time now? Would you like to exchange pointers?!'

'Ah, Maiden Yu, do you have—'

'Lady Yu! I still couldn't do it! Can you show me once more?'

'Maiden Yu, I—'

'Lady Yu! Lady Hou and I was debating about the best way to kill a Red Six-eyed Demonic Python, can you give us your input?'

'Maiden Yu—'

'Lady Yu, I saw a wonderful comb in the market, would you like to—don't be like that! It'll be a nice change!"

'Mai—'

'Lady Yu! You look absolutely pretty today, too!"

After a series of – there's no other word for it – defeat, their eerily smiling Young Master Jiang finally ordered his poor servant to arrange a meeting with their esteemed guest. Wei Changze was terribly torn between putting the lady he's partial to into the 'you-will-surely-have-a-nightmare-after' hot seat and seeing his respected young master lose face in the internal, surely imaginary, war with said esteemed guest numerous times. At length, he finally agreed (albeit reluctantly) to lead Cangse Sanren for a private talk.

And thus they found themselves with Jiang FengMian sitting there with a calm smile while his fingers are joined together underneath his chin while his elbows comfortably rest on the grand mahogany table of his study, amiably looking at the charming young woman in front of him who's clearly fidgeting in her seat.

"That is young lord—" Cangse Sanren laughed sheepishly, before tapping her mouth with her own hand multiple times in mock-punishment, "Aiyoh, this mouth of mine has a mind of its own!" she laughed again before clearing her throat before sincerely apologizing, "I'm sorry young lord, it kinda became second nature to greet Lady Yu and I just—"

"Hmmm?" the purple-clad cultivator continued to smile even through the dark shade on the upper half of his face.

Wei Changze shivered at the smile that seemed to call on for a gale to sweep harshly into the room.

Cangse Sanren gulped nervously, paling a little, "That smile is scary, young lord. I swear it wasn't on purpose!"

"I'm glad to hear that." The Yunmeng Jiang heir said sedately with that still petrifying smile. The unsaid shadow of 'or else' was heard loud and clear by all the occupants in the room.

Knowing that she screwed up big time, there was a look of resignation on the charming young lady's face as she put one hand inside her wide sleeve to take out a scroll, My life rests on you, "I know young lord is angry. I have prepared a gift for you so please don't kill—don't be angry with me already."

She handed the said scroll to Wei Changze who reverently handed it out to his master, wishing that whatever it contains would be magical enough to cause his usually composed young master's ire to recede. Otherwise, he'll be caught in the cross-fire not knowing whether to attack or defend.

Narrowed blue eyes sharpened before Jiang FengMian sighed, "Lady Sanren, this is a rather important time for me." He seriously replied as he took the velvet scroll and opened it, "I don't think I can—" he abruptly stopped when the beautiful lines forming an even more beautiful face greeted him. The refined features of Yu ZiYuan met his astonished gaze, her expression one of rare tenderness. He froze as he scrutinized the wonderful image of her doing embroidery in an open pavilion while wearing lilac robes on print.

"Young lord?" Cangse Sanren called out in a small voice, when it became apparent that the fish took the bait, she continued in a louder voice, "Ah, since this one is not enough, let me go and replace it with a better peace offe—"

"Since you're seriously reflecting, I shall accept your apologies, Lady Sanren." Jiang FengMian cut her in, calmly rolling up the scroll once more and nonchalantly tucking it inside his robes, "As friends, forgiveness is only natural."

Wei Changze, who was standing near enough to see what was on the scroll, was dumb-founded at these turn of events. It was a magical scroll indeed!

Cangse Sanren could only thank her lucky stars for her talents. Maiden Yu, my dear goddess, you have saved me yet again! Now there should be no danger of her needing to find a new place to stay at. Her imaginary tears fell down in torrents as she smiled, "Yes! Friendship! All hail friends! Can I still go with you to see Maiden Yu?" she had shamelessly asked with sparkling grey eyes.

Jiang FengMian returned her smile with a tender one, "But of course, Lady Sanren, just who am I to tell you what to do?" he answered as he put his fingers together once more and lightly rested his chin on top, "Changze will be more than happy to accompany you wherever we go." He then directed a would-be kind glance to the two people in the room, his smile turning slightly sinister again, "Isn't that right, Changze? You'd make sure Lady Sanren . .be. right?"

Cold chill passed by the two's spines and they could only nod in tandem, "Y-yes, Young Master."

Knowing that her movements are now sealed and she would be watched so she won't interrupt anyone again, her heart drowned in her tears.

Maiden Yu, save me!

Remembering up to here, the grey eyes of the charismatic student of Baoshan Sanren sincerely and tearfully sought the object of her admiration, "Lady Yu—"

"A-JIE!"

Even the cold conversation happening between the Lady Hou and Young Master Jin ("Is that rouge I see on your collar?" "Where? I was sure I—" "Oh, nevermind, it was on your other robes." "Xiu-er…") was interrupted by another eager voice before a rush of blue robes passed by everyone and latched on to the waist of the Third Lady Yu.

Yu ZiYuan was thrown a step back by the force that caught her midriff and looked down in slight surprise as she recognized the smiling face buried against her stomach, "A-Hui?"

"Yes, A-Jie!" the boy of eight years of age gleefully answered, "I came back from my training with the elders. Six months is too long! I missed A-Jie too much!"

"Isn't this Young Master Yu?" Hou MeiXiu called while brushing off the young lad chasing her skirt, "I haven't seen you in so long. You were training with Elder Yu and a few others in Mount Mei right?" Oho, and now, we have a rather interesting character here.

Rather reluctantly, the thin arms unwound themselves from the slender waist and a handsome child with dark-violet orbs respectfully gave his greetings, "Greeting Maiden Hou. I have indeed returned from my special training."

The child would have gone back to hugging his older sister but Yu ZiYuan sternly told the child, "There are other guests here, A-Hui, make sure to properly greet them all."

The boy frowned momentarily before following but his face fell completely when he observed the rest of the group with them.

"Why are there gentlemen here? They're not here for you, right, A-Jie?" he complained with serious dread.

"Pfttt." Hou MeiXiu barely stopped herself from laughing out loud, especially after espying the look of muted horror on her friend's face, either from the notion of a suitor or from the faux pas of this little loud remark.

On the other hand, Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren looked at each other in alarm and began a secret communication with their eyes.

'Emergency Mister Wei! This is another obstacle, isn't it?!'

'What's that my Lady? Why do you look so vicious? Do you wish to get rid of the Young Master Yu?'

'You're thinking what I'm thinking right? You'd better stop the young lord if this becomes a problem!'

'No, no, my Lady, you can't! If we hurt the Madam's younger brother, my mother won't even recognize my corpse!'

'Look! Look! That scary smile is back! Eek! Help! The young lord perceived a difficult adversary!'

'Gah! My Lady, don't support the Young Master in this!'

And while the useless and disconnected internal conversation is happening, Jiang FengMian stepped up respectfully to speak to the child with a small smile, "I'm Jiang FengMian of Yunmeng Jiang. I've heard much about Young Master Yu, I see that you're as promising as they say."

Wei Changze instantly stepped right beside his young master in order to better observe the exchange with a plain face, Seriously Young Master, it'll be lucky if you realize that Meishan Yu has more than just the Madam in it.

Dark brows met over young violet eyes as the only son of the Meishan Yu sect scrutinized the graceful man in front of him. When he felt a light push from behind, he adhered to the silent instructions and gave a polite response.

Yu ZiYuan let out a quiet breath as she felt that the situation has finally settled after the sudden addition of her brother.

But the serene atmosphere was broken when said brother added in a bold voice, "You better not get any ideas, Young Master Jiang or anyone else. No matter how admirable my A-Jie is, she'll marry me in the future!"

This remark called back the wintry air that blew there just a few minutes before and chased away the warmth of the day.

Yu ZiYuan actually flushed as she held her forehead with her fingertips, repressing an unsophisticated groan.

Yu HongHui.

The youngest and only son of the Meishan Yu Sect Leader.

In her past life, she wasn't close to any of her siblings, especially to her youngest brother. The age gap between siblings was a bit wide and therefore didn't help in forging too close a relationship with each other. She showed enough care as family but was too busy honing her own skills and proving herself worthy of her name to shower her little brother any excess affection. Since the ways of their household centres on being united but strict, she didn't think there's anything wrong with this.

But after returning to this time, she resolved to carefully raise her brother as he will surely have to face against the Wens in the future. This was also because she missed her children too much that she can't help but pour a bit of that to the young child seeking her attention.

But she doesn't know where she went wrong. In the short span of two years, the young child has become far too attached to her that it was a chore to convince him to go to the training with the elders in their clan including their grandfather.

A loud answering laugh spared everyone the necessity to reply and Wei Changze was just about to sigh in relief when he turned to the robust voice and recognized the people walking to them at the moment and promptly paled with apprehension.

"Is this Yuan-er's little brother?" Nie Ju-Long queried before laughing once more. He peeked around with a sly smile before going down on one knee to be at eye-level with the young boy and after a sincere introduction, he followed it with a serious tone, "I agree with Young Master Yu. Why, who else would be worthy for our Yuan-er but you? As her sworn brother, I can fully support you in this." He guffawed which sent a sour taste to some young men's mouth.

Wen Ruohan who arrived at the same time as the Nie heir, scowled at the pair before looking at the Third Lady Yu while commenting to himself, "Absurd."

Wei Changze whose toes were turning colder and colder with every word that came out of the Nie heir's mouth, could feel the tugging in his sleeve by a half nervous, half entertained rogue cultivator, Guanyin, if there's mercy at all in the world, why don't you strike that man with lightning right now? Young Master, please, it's just a small child and a big child! Don't be so gloomy!

After receiving such a fervent acknowledgement, Yu HongHui, observed the large man before him then smiled confidently while nodding warmly, "It seems that Shijie's sworn brother is truly an admirable man!"

Ignoring the glares from three different pairs of eyes at this, Nie Ju-Long laughed again before boisterously agreeing, "That I am!"

Unable to take it anymore, Yu ZiYuan frowned and firmly interjected, "Enough." She walked and looked at her brother in the eye, "A-Hui, give your greetings to Fuqin and A-Niang and rest." The young lady evenly called out in a cool voice, however the hand that caressed the young head was firm and gentle in an unconscious offer to comfort and the young lord smiled fondly.

"I understand, A-Jie!"

Once the boy has turned the corner, Yu ZiYuan addressed the small crowd and offered a simple apology for the ruckus. She then faced her sworn brother whom she knows won't come here unannounced for nothing. "Is there any problem, brother Ju-Long?"

Erasing any traces of the mirth he was feeling earlier, Nie Ju-Long scratched his head a little sheepishly as he responded, "Well, I was going to ask for help about a small problem. But let's speak of it elsewhere since there's no need to bother others with it."

"If I may, Young Master Nie, if there's anything I could help with this problem, I'll be more than happy to assist." Jiang FengMian cut in right away, that small serene smile back on his face although it didn't quite reach his blue-grey eyes.

"Just say it here." abruptly added Wen Ruohan who's not about to let him be alone with the lady when he came all this way to see her.

"A few more avenues to take advantage of may be discovered with more heads doing the thinking." Lan Qiren, who was speaking for the first time in a long while, commented quietly.

Hou MeiXiu also inquired in order to lighten the air, "Anything interesting going on that you need A-Yuan, Young Master Nie?"

Abandoning the First Young Master Lan to his own devices, Liu QingShan also uttered, "I'll also be willing to help if it's needed."

Confronted on all sides, Nie Ju-Long just sighed and accepted even the insincere offers to help and he started to explain.

Apparently, the particular cultivator who was deemed as dangerous by several sects and is now on the run was found near Qinghe not too long ago. As such, the responsibility to apprehend him was given to Qinghe Nie sect. However, this cultivator is learned in a few dark arts, has a high level of cultivation and is extremely sly and good at detecting spiritual flow and therefore managed to evade capture 'till now. Unfortunately it seems that this man, Lian Wangshi, is about to escape to Dongying. If he does, he'll be forever out of their reach. As it happens, there's a recent sighting of the man who's still waiting for a boat to take him out and in order to make sure that they'll succeed, Nie Ju-Long wants to get some support from his sworn sister.

"What makes this man so dangerous?" Cangse Sanren queried curiously.

"It's said that he made a collection of songs that are malicious in nature. Ones that induces hallucinations and agitates slowly." Eagle-like eyes went to the white-clad cultivators near him, "Exactly the opposite of what Gusu Lan does, I suppose."

This caused the dejected Qingheng-Jun to wrinkle his smooth forehead, "I know of this man. Thanking Young Master Nie for undertaking such an arduous task." He bowed.

The tall cultivator merely waved his hand as though swatting a fly to indicate that he didn't mind.

"Where is he now?" Yu ZiYuan asked at length, taking a step forward.

"Well, he's got one known weakness. And while he's a smart little bastard, since he can't help but indulge in it, we think we can get him before he sails."

The Violet Spider tilted her head slightly, "What weakness?"

The future Sect Leader of Qinghe Nie grinned at this though anyone could tell that there was derision mixed in it and after he may or may not have looked at Young Master Jin's direction, he answered ruefully, "Women. He's at the pleasure quarters at Yunping City."

A distasteful look passed over every young lady's countenance and by pure chance or design, the men all heard them mutter in a bitter voice at once, "Men."

The young lords all winced and felt their backs grow straighter at the unfair albeit voiceless judgement they can feel even though it's not directed at them.

"T-that—" Jin GuanShan, who felt the most guilty of all started to mumbled but was rudely interrupted by his own betrothed.

"Right! Now that we know the situation, I have a few ideas in my mind already!" Hou MeiXiu exclaimed blaringly, not wanting to hear the excuses of the man who would only embarrass himself no matter what he comes up with.

Purplish-blue eyes showed concern as Liu QingShan contemplated, "If this man is so good at evasion and able to quickly notice active qi, he'll be able to discern cultivators from afar."

"It's either we overpower him in an instant before he can flee or get close to him without him perceiving us as cultivators." Cangse Sanren mused with two fingers touching her chin.

"But only people with cultivation pass the beginning stages of True Foundation level are able to hide their qi without it actually affecting their battle prowess. The others could only seal theirs completely to avoid detection." Hou MeiXiu nodded with a frown. We wouldn't be able to fight effectively if it comes to that. "People who can fight despite hiding their qi…that would give us only two candidates in this group." She verified, her eyes going to her best friend and her sworn brother.

"Shouldn't head disciples or sect leaders handle this then?" Jin GuanShan concluded, wanting to show that he was participating in the discussion seriously.

"Unfortunately, there's also a rather serious issue that most clans are investigating in Jue di Gorge at the moment." Nie Ju-Long dismissed the idea with another wave of his hand, "That's another reason why I'm handling this with very few people."

Based on the suddenly dark faces of the other young masters, it's easy to see that they were also aware that some other sinister things are brewing in that mysterious place.

"In that case, it's up to us." Wen Ruohan huffed, a little irritated at this turn of events.

"For such a slippery person, it's better to catch him unawares…" Jiang FengMian articulated.

"Any idea A-Yuan?" prompted the First Young Lady of YunXiao sect and brown eyes observed the quiet form of her friend.

"I am capable of hiding my spiritual energy and incapacitating his meridians as long as I'm close enough. If what was said is true then I should be several stages higher than him. If he can't detect me, we'll be able to catch him." The cold voice uttered steadily as Yu ZiYuan thought further on how to accomplish this.

The female rogue cultivator smiled at the dependable answer of Lady Yu before continuing, "In that case, we can support you at least. We can disguise ourselves…Ah! As courtesans would do!" the epiphany caused her to blurt out the rest of her words.

Several eyes widened at this and more than a few brows crumpled in disagreement but all this was lost on Yu ZiYuan who also scowled, "A simple one should do." She stated, a passing thought occurred to her that this is certainly where Wei Ying got his bizarre ideas from.

"No, it won't, Lady Yu." The charming young lady insisted determinedly, "Especially for you, he must be pretty familiar with your mien at least."

Yu ZiYuan's frown deepened in disbelief, "I made my debut in the cultivation world mere months ago. I doubt he's heard of me, let alone be acquainted with how I look."

There was silence that followed this statement as the cultivators on the training ground looked at each other before Hou MeiXiu decided to save them all from the awkwardness, "A-Yuan, believe me, even if he hasn't seen you in person, I'm sure he must have heard multiple times what you look like."

The Third Lady of Meishan Yu sighed as if they're not making any sense, "That's ridiculous."

"It's not." chorused the young men, unable to do anything but admit that much.

"However, I think—" the purple clad young master started with a ready argument but it was drowned by an excited chatter.

"Which is why it will be more effective that we go dress as courtesans!" Cangse Sanren, who was courting death by decapitation, innocently entreated. Wei Changze, who's beside her was desperately trying to catch her gaze in order to warn her about the many ways this could land them in total catastrophe. Unfortunately, his lady friend seems to be rather exhilarated at the idea of seeing the Madam in a never before seen setting. He then started thinking of how to avoid the deluge that'll follow with a face full of tears, Aish, Guanyin, why is it so hard to live a peaceful life?

Unconvinced, the Third Lady Yu practically snarled as she declined, "I would rather die than—"

"That's exactly why! If he has heard of our Lady of Divine—" Lady Sanren caught herself in time and coughed before persuading everyone further, "I mean, if he has heard of you, he would have known that you're a lady of dignity and would never suspect you to ever disguise as a courtesan!"

The frightfully unwilling expression was calmed a little at this clarification. As loath as she is to admit it, there's merit to these words.

"Be that as it may, I don't think you need to go through all that, Maiden Yu." The heir of Yunmeng Jiang hastily stated his opinion in a hard voice, taking advantage of the moment of silence. When violet eyes met blue-grey ones, the young man added with obstinate conviction, "You need not do anything that'll cause you discomfort."

Uncharacteristically feeling awkward at the spark in the air, Nie Ju-Long cleared his throat, "I'll go with what you decide, Yuan-er. I agree with Young Master Jiang. We can also just burst in and axe him, right?"

Finally catching herself, Cangse Sanren became aware of the murderous, freezing, and completely camouflaged glare aimed at her back and she cautiously stepped back. "I do apologize, Lady Yu. I quite forgot myself." She desperately tried to diffuse the situation for the sake of keeping her tranquil life, a sulky young lord is different from a homicidal young lord after all, "As you said, a simple one should do. Even as a beautiful waitress would do as long as we get to him fast enough."

Yu ZiYuan thought about it hard. Since it's obvious that she'll have to be the one to capture the snake, the way to do it would be hers to decide.

It's safe to say that they're running out of time and would have one chance to do this and do it fast. It's best for her to have the assistance of the female cultivators now here at least. But if things go wrong and these young ladies have to fight with their spiritual energy sealed, it could end up with endangering not only them but innocent bystanders as well.

Like what her sworn brother said, they can just fight him, but that poses the danger of the cultivator running away and again, other people could get hurt.

But another pressing concern is the thing happening in an entirely different place.

The deaths in Jue di Gorge.

They already sealed the Endless Abyss just a few weeks ago. It was earlier than in her previous life but the recent reports of the death toll and the disappearances never happened then.

This is something she also has no idea of. And it's making her anxious that she wants this current problem at hand over with no complications and offer her assistance there.

Weighing everything carefully, she failed to relax her frown as she sighed.

"What do you wish to do Shijie?" Liu QingShan gently questioned.

"We'll go as courtesans." The Third Young Lady of Meishan Yu bit out the words as though they're venomous, "But A-Shan, no need to do it if you're not comfortable."

"No. Since Shijie will go, I will, too." The other young lady replied determinedly.

Yu ZiYuan pretended not to see the First Young Master Lan's worried expression upon hearing these words, "Very well."

Completely missing the lips strained in a thin line on at least three different faces and the deathly pallor of at least two creatures in the group, the dignified beauty started walking out of the training grounds, "We have things to prepare. Let's go."

Yunping City.

A bustling place tucked in between Meishan and Yunmeng. And while it can be reached via boat from Yunmeng, one will have to go through land from Meishan.

Since they have decided not to ride their swords lest they be seen, they opted to ride in carriages to get there.

Yu ZiYuan, who already hates this manner of transportation for various reasons, just felt her stress level double at having to share this ride with everyone in their party instead of them splitting in two carriages to give each a wide berth given the size of their group.

What is with this? She internally gritted her teeth as she felt the throbbing of a vein at the back of her neck. It's becoming extremely burdensome to keep her countenance smooth.

No one was willing to back down and change to another carriage. And when she volunteered to be the one to change, she was just stopped by her sworn brother and her friend saying that that won't change anything.

Why won't it change anything?! She should have followed her initial desires instead of enduring the suffocating air inside the carriage with the First Young Lady of YunXiao sect hanging on to her arm on the right and Liu QingShan steadfastly showering her with attention from the left. She knows that all this was because of the men who opted to sit on their other side and was trying to find ways to entertain said young ladies instead.

The worse of that is the sight in front of her filled with faces she doesn't care to see at the moment.

Jiang FengMian, Wen Ruohan and Lan Qiren.

They look strange lined up like this. She thought scathingly. What are they doing looking so stony-faced like this? Anyone would think that their wives were stolen by their expressions.

It's quite difficult to disregard the annoying presence of Wen Ruohan and the way Zidian crackles whenever she thinks about how much she'd prefer to throw him out of the carriage.

Fortunately, aside from their displeased expressions, they look well enough in casual clothing that they switched into before leaving Meishan, their uniforms and swords stored in their qiankun pouches and were given ordinary blades in exchange. She must admit that it feels strange seeing the Lan brothers without their famed blue and white forehead ribbon which they most unwillingly traded for a plain cotton one.

And that's why I told them that there's no need for them to come. She dismissively mused. That way, I could have refused Wen Ruohan coming without looking like an ingrate.

"Are you alright, Maiden Yu?" the distinguished son of the Jiangs asked in a considerate tone.

She gave a nod in answer. Maybe she should have just sat in front with her sworn brother who was driving the carriage accompanied by Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze. Maybe they decided to do so because they were feeling a little sick basing on their bleak complexion.

She casually resolved to look into it if they didn't get better later but for the moment, she simply focused on not exploding in irritation on the way.

With the patience she previously thought only her ex-husband possesses, they finally arrived in Yunping City and the ladies all but jumped out of the wagon as soon as they stopped.

All of them exhaling in comfort at being emancipated from such a horrible ride, Hou MeiXiu soon smiled confidently and turned to the still glamorously clothed young master from Lanling.

"We still have to prepare for this evening. We should go to a pleasure house to do so." The slight condescension in her tone can be heard as she further addressed her betrothed, "Where to, Young Master Jin?"

Jin GuanShan had the nerve to blush and automatically said something in his defence, "I haven't been here for a long time."

Realizing immediately that such a statement hardly saved him from any embarrassment, he opened his mouth again to say more but was cut off by the deceptively sparkling laugh from the brown-eyed miss in muted pink robes.

"Informing Young Master Jin that a month ago can hardly be called 'a long time'." Hou MeiXiu joked with an acute gaze that is devoid of mirth. "If you're unable to properly gauge even simply things, we'll have a problem." She finished with a dry smile, facing in front once more to observe the city.

In truth, she was having fun making things difficult for the young master in front of their current audience. Of course there's some remorse to be felt for making the others uncomfortable but since A-Yuan is not reprimanding her yet, she can't help but keep at it.

Feeling that he should defend himself at least in front of his peers, Jin GuanShan squared his shoulders and muster the courage of someone who belongs to one of the Five Great Clans who recently sealed the Endless Abyss.

"H-Hou MeiXiu!"

A slow turn afforded him a glimpse of a glacial smile and detached glance, "Yes?" the poisonous nectar in it rendered the other young masters absolutely mute as well and one and all decided that it's Young Master Jin's problem and left him to it.

The reproach on Young Master Jin's throat died immediately once he saw the uncharitable stares of the other young ladies standing beside Hou MeiXiu.

"N-Nothing."

Unfortunately, he can't leave now or he'll only face a beating from his parents. And if he stays elsewhere to hide and enjoy himself, it'll be over for him if he gets caught which is something his fiancé might just make sure of as soon as he's gone.

After a brief discourse, the group split up with the men asking for information while the young ladies inconspicuously going to a brothel and after paying a ludicrous amount, talked with some of its courtesans in search of the knowledge that they need.

'This eel is appreciative of art so he'll most likely lower his guard with a performance that's to his liking.' was the general consensus and therefore, a dance would need to be arranged. Due to the luck that she doesn't seem to own, that also fell on Yu ZiYuan's shoulder.

Hou MeiXiu would play the guqin and since it turned out that Cangse Sanren can't dance to save her life, she was tasked with playing the flute instead. Since she doesn't want to burden her serene-looking, younger martial sister as well, Liu QingShan was assigned to the pipa which, mercifully, she's well-versed in.

While the three were engaged in choosing the score and the clothes that they'll need, Yu ZiYuan, with a mightily indisposed countenance, snapped at four of the courtesans to follow her to a private room so she may ask them things that she'll most likely need to know. The four alluring women, despite being older than this bewitching, cultured young lady, felt intimidated by her unfaltering regard and resolved to sincerely answer anything she might inquire about.

After a shichen of discussion, the Third Lady Yu came back in order to practice the dance that she'll be performing. At first, her brows climbed all the way to her hairline at being taught the steps by the best dancer in that shop, her knuckles turning white at their tight grip and in a bout disgruntled self-consciousness, she thanked the heavens that her children would never know that she had to do such a provocative thing in this life.

Her focus was laudable, however, and she was able to memorize it after just two repetitions. Doing it herself, though, required more of her self-control but with a clear goal in mind, she mastered it in a matter of two shichen which earned her heartfelt commendations from her companions.

"That's marvellous, A-Yuan!"

"You just made it more elegant and refined, Shijie!"

"I'm absolutely going to die because of this, Lady Yu!"

But despite the curious gazes she received from such a statement, Cangse Sanren only continued clapping with her tears watering her heart. Me and my big mouth!

With only a few more hours to spare, they started dressing the part that they'll have to play. As an expression of solidarity, all four of them are going to dress up even though only one would dance.

Soft, white fingertips tremulously let go of the fabric that was offered to her. The trio with her all nailed their eyes on different patches of the floor to avoid her disbelieving gape. Where did they buy this?! She could see right through it!

"Calm down, A-Yuan. It looks worse than it actually is, and that's the outer robe, your inners are silk, satin and brocade." carefully explained Hou MeiXiu with a sheepish smile. "Now, now, we only have at least two shichen until we have to go."

And after another grateful prayer that her children won't have to ever suffer through this dark history, numerous pairs of hands began to transform the four young ladies into seductive enchantresses.

Renting a tea room for themselves after ensuring where their target will be and absolutely refusing additional services, the group of promising young cultivators found themselves waiting on the first floor of the establishment that Yu ZiYuan went to, bidding their time until the ladies have finished their preparations and come to meet them.

Unable to persist with the deathly atmosphere, Jin GuanShan accepted the tea that a nervous Wei Changze served and spouted mindless chatter to fill the void.

It was good that Lan Qiyue was courteous enough to answer him and Nie Ju-Long is not too unwilling to converse. But Jiang FengMian, Wen Ruohan together with Lan Qiren absolutely refused to partake in the conversation and only continued to peer at the closed door every few minutes.

The Jin heir was hoping for some of Jiang FengMian's good-natured manners that might just eclipse Wen Ruohan's and Lan Qiren's forbidding aura. However, the usually relaxed young master seems to be deep in thought so it was up to him to come up with topics that might entertain them and coax them into participating as they wait.

Holding the porcelain in one hand and waving his fan with the other, his words turned to ideals and he was commenting on the characteristics of a perfect woman with such ardour that he didn't notice the nearing footsteps at all.

"Taking everything into consideration, I'd like someone who's brimming with beauty, dignity and loyalty."

"Figures. One always desire what they are not."

The sharp tone accompanied the opening of the doors and the opulent young master chocked on the refreshment that he just drank at the vision that suddenly met his eyes.

Yu ZiYuan entered the room with a glare, quietly daring anyone into making any wayward remark when they exerted this much effort into this mission.

She need not have bothered, nevertheless, since the room held its collective breath at the sight of them. And no one would blame them for it, for the appearance of this fairy would rob any man his wits.

The usually free strands of midnight tresses of the siren are now bound to form large, soft, decorative braids on the crown of her head with only her long fringes framing her lovely face. This gave way to the sight of a creamy and slender nape and the tempting arch of her uncovered back. The smooth, exposed flesh looked as though water could be squeezed out of it. Her unmarred, swan-like neck was adorned by a golden necklace dotted with garnets that made it look slightly frail. Her tender, delicate shoulders were bare for scrutiny and the drooping, transparent wide red sleeves barely hid the lissom arms underneath. Her pale wrists were encircled with emerald jade bangles. The low-hanging scarlet silk with exquisite embroidery of striking honey-colored peonies hugged her figure and the yellow brocade secured by a braided silver and blue satin rope cinching her middle accentuated her ample bosom and slim waist. The layers upon layers of fluid vermillion skirt embellished with luxurious golden threads at the hem added grandeur to the look.

The lithe eyebrows together with the coral and kohl highlighted shapely eyes and rouge made the supple lips even more prominent. The red lotus drawn on her forehead and the natural blush emphasized her fairness.

The tendrils of gold, pearls and rubies in the pins and combs on her dark head and the large dangling earrings on her soft earlobes swayed with her every step, accompanying the flowing canary satin shawl sweeping the floor.

Yep, we're dead. Wei Changze concluded after just a glance, sparkling tears glittered around his lashes.

"Well now, this is going to be a bloodbath." Nie Ju-Long cleared his throat after a quick peek around to which the poor Jiang servant could only nod his head.

I should have finished writing that will before we left… the faithful attendant lost his words when he looked behind his Madam and colored at the angel in white and pink robes that, despite the fearful smile towards his young master, was still one of the most breath-taking dreams he's ever seen.

"Wipe that drool off your face." Yu ZiYuan's voiced cracked like a whip and Wei Changze had the momentary terror that he was found out only to realize a second later that the harsh admonition was for the Jin heir which made every men's stature a degree straighter in an effort not to attract her ire.

"We should leave now." Liu QingShan's reserve tone occupied the room. She's bewitching in her ice-blue silk but it could be seen that she's uncomfortable with the amount of flesh she's displaying even though it's significantly less than the others,

Qingheng-Jun immediately jumped to his feet in an effort to hide his heated cheeks, "Let me help you with your robe, Maiden Liu."

And while the ladies are covering their gorgeous apparels (the Nie heir proactively tied his sworn sister's coat for her, it's best that he prevents a certain trio from fighting over it. He doesn't want casualties this early.), Jiang FengMian offered the young ladies with a small frown, "I'll get you a veil." He was speaking to the room at large but his blue-grey eyes are on the Third Lady Yu.

"We have no time for it."

"I-I think that we should, Lady Yu." The female rogue cultivator interjected in an effort to ease a certain someone's chagrin. She frantically held on to Wei Changze's helping hands to coax him into action.

This was properly addressed by the desperate aide, "I'll have it ready in no time, Madam—Maiden Yu!" and giving no one a chance to refuse, he dashed out of the store as though his demons are after him.

"In that case, it's better if we go ahead and secure the target." The towering figure of the only young master of Qinghe Nie looked at everyone, "Young Master Jin and Young Master Wen, since you were the ones who talked to the manager of the two shops earlier, please come with me to confirm the details and wait."

The esteemed son of the Wens glowered at that, "Someone else can do that."

But in order to make sure that they won't explode while he isn't here and so as not to miss a show while he's busy, Nie Ju-Long rumbustiously chuckled and wrapped a hand around the other man while dragging him out, "Come now, Young Master Wen. Who would do it? My men are in the outskirts of the city. Nothing more to do here. We'll want to do this fast so we can have some time to drink later!"

Jin GuanShan, who just finished obsequiously assisting his fiancée with her cape, was promptly kicked out by said lady to follow the two out. Hou MeiXiu then looked around and decided between the Lan brothers on who to bother with her request. Thinking that it's too pitiful to send out the First Young Master Lan when he's so obviously love-struck, she respectfully addressed Lan Qiren, "Second Young Master Lan, might I trouble you with looking after them?"

She thought that the austere Lans would be better than the benevolent Jiang to ensure that her weak-willed partner won't be swayed and shame her. Heaven knows that Nie Ju-Long won't be paying attention to the actions of a sneaky harlot and Wen Ruohan wouldn't care even if he sees it.

With the slightest crinkle between his brows, the discerning young cultivator, in his still ivory but casual robes, quickly glanced at one particular direction before slightly saluting and leaving the room.

"Much appreciated Second Young Master Lan." Hou MeiXiu returned the bow and straightened when the retreating back can no longer be seen. She then confusedly turned beside her, "What is it, Lady Sanren?" she then asked the woman who lovingly held on to her hand with both of hers. She can't understand why she looks so grateful.

"Nothing Lady Hou." Cangse Sanren blinked charming grey eyes as she smiled, "I was just thinking that you somehow looked like a savior just then." What luck! The heavens might still pity me then.

Maybe she didn't like the audience. Hou MeiXiu presumed as she freed herself and fixed her olive dress and jade pins.

In no time at all, Wei Changze came back laden with various silk veils. After giving a cream colored one to his lord and another to the outstretched fingers of Lan Qiyue, he smoothly helped the First Young Lady of YunXiao sect and his lady with putting on theirs.

Without fully asking for permission, the Young Master Jiang carefully tied the veil around Yu ZiYuan's head, "Even if it's a mission, we'd like to be as discreet as we can."

Violet eyes shook as the cerulean robes that the tall man changed into previously drowned her view as he proceeded to gently wrap his lean arms around her to knot the strings firmly. Her fists gripped the crimson silk fabric underneath her touch in a frantic attempt to ground herself. When he took a step back, she slowly lifted her gaze from his chest to his face to see the unwavering and warm but slightly contemplative regard he has on her. He gave her a short smile and lowered his face in order to whisper caressingly, "Beauty can't be hidden, I suppose. But Maiden Yu looks lovely no matter."

The blooming hue on her cheeks rivalled the red of her garments. She wanted to push him away in an instinctual reaction to defend herself from getting carried away by such a simple gesture. Mercifully, most of her face is hidden by the silky cloth.

With only her eyes showing, it accentuated their beguiling shade. The regretful man couldn't stop the disgruntled sentiments swimming inside him. How vexing that others must see this. "I'm sorry that you have to do this, Maiden Yu." Jiang FengMian finally uttered.

Those words finally settled her wayward heart and she tacitly released the breath she didn't realized she was supressing. She brutally ignored the disappointment sprouting in her veins. So he was only apologetic that such a role was foisted on her. But of course. She lowered her gaze, effectively hiding the unrest there. "No need for apologies, Young Master Jiang. I'm the one who decided to do this."

She looked sideways at the young woman he should be paying attention to. You fool, isn't this the reason she walked away from you without knowing anything before?

Seeing Cangse Sanren energetically engage the others in a conversation, she was starting to think that something must be done about this unmoving relationship soon. She scowled then. But why must she be the one worrying about the affairs of his love?! Mustn't it be his aides who should be running agitatedly around helping him get his lady?! What are they all doing?!

She momentarily closed her eyes, feeling irritation replace the despair in defence to her heart, she frowned and opened sharp wine-red orbs and loudly announced.

"Let us depart."

-0-

This is a bad plan.

Wei Changze immediately judged with a paling face as soon as they see the gorgeous ladies enter the room where their target is at. His legs growing numb despite the plush chair he's sitting on.

Already he can see the ominous dark cloud hovering over their group. The deep frown set on his young master's face is absolutely frightening. The strain he can see running on the broad shoulders of everyone whose name is not Changze or Jin is just palpable it's suffocating and the poor servant thought he'd much rather just do the dance himself.

Ignoring just how disturbing that would be visually, he wished that he's anywhere else but here. The nice ambience of the tea room they rented from the store right in front didn't hold a candle to the several degrees of ire from various hot-headed, jealous young men.

Nie Ju-Long whose concern is more on preventing anyone from getting hurt, also didn't ease up on the fierce stare he's sending through the wide window and at the back of the head of one Lian Wangshi.

From their position, the stage that was organized for the lascivious guest can be seen well.

Said man by the name of Lian Wangshi is currently sipping wine as his slanted brown eyes observed the smiling manager of the brothel who told him that they prepared a special gift for him for coming to their store for three nights in a row. He became a little suspicious at the sudden offer but even after surveying the surrounding area, there are no traces of anyone possessing any significant amount of spiritual energy. And he just broke through another level in his cultivation. He'd surely be able to defend even against most sect leaders enough to allow him to run away. And he made sure to erase his tracks and leave his marks elsewhere. The clans should be looking for him on the opposite direction. Just two more days and he'll be able to set sail for Dongying. He'll just have to be patient and lay low until then. With the present plight arising in Jue di Gorge, their focus would in no doubt center there. There's nothing to worry about.

Setting down his cup and fingering his long hair bound by a yellow rope, he leered at the enchanting females kneeling a few steps in front of him with their wide sleeves together which hid their faces before answering the manager, "Since you're so sincere, this boss shall accept your gifts." And then transferring his attention to the lady in red gracefully bowing at the very lead, "You, woman, raise your head."

The young lady lifted her head and lowered her hands and straightforwardly met his gaze. Upon seeing the alluring features, he was momentarily surprised but soon narrowed his eyes, his grin disappearing as he whistled once and admiringly added, "This is much better than any you've presented before. This is going to be quite fun."

He was tracing the rim of his empty cup while he took in every line of the beautiful face, "What a proud face. You don't look like someone who'll serve anyone."

Quelling the need to gouge those eyes out, Yu ZiYuan slowly tilted her face and met that probing gaze, "This young master shouldn't be so quick to judge. After all, you only see what I choose to show you."

Shrewd orbs squinted further after hearing the measured and dignified voice of the other. "But you have such defiant eyes. So I'm thinking you hate to be here." He wanted to look at the others behind this one but he can't seem to take his gaze away.

Remembering the words of advice she received earlier, she lowered her eyes a bit as though amused, offering the briefest of smiles. "The young master mentioned my pride, then you should assume that I never do anything I do not wish for."

The stretch of thin lips curved once more before it opened for a hearty laugh, "I like that answer."

Internally sighing in relief, the manager pushed forward a little bit, wishing that this encounter would end already. Since she already received the money for it, she can only do her part well. "Would you like her to pour you a cup of wine?"

After a moment of deliberation in where Lian Wangshi looked away in thought before finally responding, "…no. Start with the performance." And to Yu ZiYuan, he further added, "Beauty, if you please me enough, I'd let you serve me tonight."

With more sincerity in it, Yu ZiYuan's pleased smile returned, "I'm looking forward to it." Wait till I get my hands on you, you dog. I'll wring your neck.

Incidentally, she wasn't the only one thinking about this at the moment.

"What a highly unpleasant voice."

The cold voice made a certain servant's heart jump to his throat. Every tap of the long finger on the wooden table sent pangs of anxiety on the attendant's spine.

"You're absolutely right, Young Master." Wei Changze answered appropriately, sounding so righteously offended, "I didn't know a voice could sound so aggravating." I'm sure you think that of anyone who addresses the Madam.

"To make us go through these lengths, I don't think I'd be happy until I cut off both his arms at least. What arrogant words, he deserves more than one round of beating." The belligerent tone of Wen Ruohan could be heard as he took his hand away from several pieces of ceramics.

Sweating profusely, the Jiang servant replaced another shattered cup with a new one and poured some tea. Aigoo, don't tag team me, you two!

After calmly drinking tea, Lan Qiren heavily placed his cup back on the mahogany table and icily uttered, "Unnecessary violence is unforgivable. If the punishment is death, then we should just carry it out immediately."

Wei Changze wanted to cry. What did he do wrong to be surrounded by these blood-thirsty men? Madam, please help me! He's got a nasty premonition that this would be his sole prayer once his young master is married.

Nie Ju-Long then stated with an animalistic grin, "Don't worry, young masters. I'll let you have a piece. That is, if there's anything left after Yuan-er's through with him."

Outwardly, the loyal servant was nodding his head in agreement. In his heart, he was raising the white flag and wonders if it's too late to dress up and go to the other side of the road.

Meanwhile, Cangse Sanren, Hou MeiXiu and Liu QingShan tranquilly prepared their instruments on one side of the room. Without looking at the man whose engrossed scrutiny is on one particular figure now standing at the center of the room holding a decorative fan and raised her hands in a pose, they peeked at each other and readied themselves, after three counts, the rich, enthralling melody filled the room and in the middle, the fairy-like existence started her dance.

Swirling fabrics of silk and satin in crimson and gold elegantly followed every stride and twirl. The inviting sway of hips and wave of the luxurious fan paired with the majestic mien and bold eyes ensnared more than one pair of captivated orbs. Every peek on the inside of her snowy wrists is a treat. Her occasional smiles are a blessing. The hypnotizing music, sometimes slow, sometimes fast, was perfectly matched.

On the other building, Nie Ju-Long was attentively watching his sworn sister spin enticingly, appreciative but undistracted, and ruefully smirked. You'll be punished Lian Wangshi, for the simple sin of witnessing this.

Ending with the lady fluttering down on the floor, her fan partially hiding her face and her other hand artfully resting on the voluminous skirt, the guest has a satisfied expression on while clapping his hands.

Not even scanning his surroundings, he just called out loud, "Marvellous, you can all go." Then to the courtesan straightening her posture, he ordered, "Beauty, come here and sit beside me. I'll make sure you enjoy it as well."

The fidgeting of one figure near him momentarily caught his attention and saw one of the musicians in robes of alabaster and pink. Realizing the comparable charm of the others, the cultivator stopped them from leaving, "Ah, hmm, the others aren't bad at all, so you can all serve me together. I'll pay you all well."

The tall woman with amethyst orbs could feel the bulging vein at her nape throb a little and her small smile almost faltered.

This is truly the hardest part of this.

This caused her to recollect certain words spoken to her that afternoon.

'It's hard, isn't it, young lady? Making a smile to convince them that you're absolutely delighted to see them is one of the most difficult parts of this job.'

'How about this? Have you anyone in your heart?'

'Then it's simple, just imagine that person and how you would like to smile at him to show your feelings if it's the last thing you'll do in this life.'

She confidently strode forward, the man no longer so wary of her presence and held one cheek lightly to demand his attention, "Where are you looking at young master when I'm right here?" she then projected a certain image of a man in purple robes to replace the unsavoury shape of her target and heed the counsel she was given and smiled her brightest.

The promising young cultivators camping out on the other building had a clear view of this never before seen sweetness from the famously indifferent young lady and the tall servant who was waiting with the others for the perfect time to attack swore so ferociously in his mind, Madam! Please don't smile like that! Please don't do this to me! This servant won't live peacefully if you do this! It'll be easier to just hang me!

He tried to look sideways but just a short glance at the strained lips and crumpled brows makes him want to run out of there screaming.

Meanwhile, the guest on the other side was speechless at the loving smile given to him and he heard the noble voice speak again, "You're finally within reach."

With deft fingers, she skilfully took out the needle she's been hiding under her sleeves and hit an area on the other's neck that is easily missed.

Lian Wangshi was delighted and was about to raise his own hands to seize the woman in an embrace when he perceived his world instantly freeze and he became petrified. His pupils shrunk when he was met with an arctic gaze from the same young lady, her enchanting smile vanishing like burnt out candlelight. He heard her go to the window and mention names he definitely knows of.

The ladies from before didn't even need to completely step out of the parlour.

"What? It's already over A-Yuan?"

"We prepared for so long and it was over not even a shichen later."

"W-well, i-isn't this nice? Lady Yu did a great job. Now let's all forget this happened."

"Brother Ju-Long, the Deity-Binding net please. With his cultivation, he'll regain feelings soon."

"I'll do it, Madam, I mean, Maiden Yu. T-thank you for your hard work!"

"Thank you for taking that on, Yuan-er."

"It was nothing."

"Do you want to beat him up at least once?"

"…interrogate him first. He might become charcoal if I do it now."

"Roger that."

"Maiden Yu, please lend me your hand, we need to wash it."

"I-I will go fetch some water, Young Master."

"Do so, Changze."

After the rigid golden rope was tightly tied around his numb body several times and knotted firmly more than twice, he felt someone grab his hair and forcefully yanked it to meet cruel reddish-brown eyes. The striking face of the younger man was lit up in a sneer, "You fucking bastard, I'll make sure you'll make it worth my ire."

"Young Master Wen…" Lan Qiren tried to stop him before his outstretched fingers begin to lose its motivation. His light eyes going to the lady who was now putting on a special violet ring on her forefinger, he then veered it elsewhere, turning his back entirely, "Very well. Only, make sure that he can confess where the rest of his manuscripts are hidden so that we can dispose of them completely."

Yu ZiYuan doesn't care about this offender anymore. She only wishes to get out of these clothes and properly cover herself. She'll surely hear about the rest from her sworn brother anyway. But of course, she'll have to shut his mouth entirely about this whole debacle at a later date.

A soft fabric landed on her shoulders and she followed the hands on them to see Jiang FengMian warmly regard her before offering, "How about you change your clothes with the others, Maiden Yu? I should imagine that you're uncomfortable with your current attire."

She merely nodded in response. She was told that they already asked for another room and was promptly guided there.

For some reason, as excited as she was when complimenting her upon putting on the last intricate jade pin, Cangse Sanren was even more enthusiastic to assist her in removing the lavish robes and getting her entirely covered and snug.

The fair skin now out of sight, the rogue cultivator now exhaled a sigh of relief. Hopefully, I'll be forgiven a little.

Upon meeting up again and going to a clearing outside the busy town. Nie Ju-Long threw the man he was carrying like a sack of potatoes on the ground.

Yu ZiYuan, who was preparing to mount her sword to depart, spared the dishevelled man a glance, "Of all the places to drag your sorry behind to, you just have to spread filth in an already indiscreet area."

In the brief moment she hasn't seen him, it seems that the fugitive was already pummelled heavily a few times. His brown eyes shook and clouded over in fear as he instantly lowered his gaze.

This made her slightly curious but no one met her eyes.

Wei Changze hid his trembling hands behind him, Please don't look at me Madam. I'm afraid I can't talk of what happened without screaming.

Dismissing it, the Third Young Lady of Meishan Yu sect let her sword hover a few inches above the ground. Respectfully bowing, she continued, "I'll be taking my leave, everyone. I wish you all a safe journey back. Please forgive this one for going first."

After a round of formalities and wholly refusing any escort, three swords bearing Yu ZiYuan, Hou MeiXiu and Liu QingShan rose to the skies and sped in the direction of Meishan Yu.

With the cold evening air beating her hair away from her face, purple orbs observed the newest disciple of their sect out of the corner of her eyes. She didn't care for the way her closest friend pretended that a certain man from Lanling didn't exist but it seeing the dejected countenance of Lan Qiyue as he was trying to bid farewell to her martial sister is a bit difficult to stomach.

It truly was none of her business so doing nothing should be fine, this she maintained. But as the older one, saying a few words shouldn't be too bad. Especially regarding a bad relationship. Heaven knows she has experience there.

Controlling her sword to fly beside the pretty young lady wearing the blue sect robes of Meishan Yu, she began to tentatively inquire, "A-Shan, do you hate Young Master Lan?"

A pensive look washed over the delicate face before Lady Liu answered, "I do not. However, behind him is the Lan sect, and I always remember that when I look at the young master."

Mulling over the response, Yu ZiYuan tried to find words that could help her form a solution. This is actually pretty simple. She just needs to see the man himself.

Albeit not completely parallel to the situation, this brought her memories of a young man who she always pressured to wear his sect like his first and only skin, afraid as she was that it'll be taken away from him. His blue-grey eyes often looked at her with pitiful distress, hoping she'll save him when she's the one pushing him down the cliff.

Violet eyes dimmed abruptly as it always did at the thought of her children. Pressing her lips tightly together, she could feel the infernal watering of her eyes and the tremor in her fingertips as her chest constrict with emotions.

Her son. Her brilliant A-Cheng.

He might not have surpassed that brat Wei Ying in any skill she wanted him to compete on.

But he was a good child.

He was respectful and responsible.

He was earnest and worked hard.

He might not have exceeded his adopted brother but he was better than most his peers.

And he loved her no matter what she put him through.

Why?

Why did she never tell him that?

And neglected to show him that she's aware that he was trying diligently?

If she looked beyond her own sorrow, she would have seen.

That he was enough.

That he's more than just the son of the Sect Leader.

That he was her son.

And that was enough.

And she could have told him as much.

"Shijie?"

A concerned voice brought her back to the present and she glared at the dark horizon in an attempt to squash the grief chocking her. This is not the time for her useless remorse.

Her A-Cheng wouldn't know of it anyway.

After a few more minutes of silence, she finally opened her lips, "First Young Master Lan may be wearing a similar uniform as the one who nearly caused your brother harm, but he is not that man. See the human wearing those white clothes and not the just the robes or his sect. Perhaps then, you'll perceive something more."

Meeting the brilliant purplish-blue eyes that directly held her own, she gave Liu QingShan a short tentative smile. The other young lady lowered her gaze to the passing woods below for a moment, thinking, before facing forward once more.

She replied moments later, "I'll…think about it carefully, Shijie."

Saying the last of their polite goodbyes, three pairs of eyes watched as Nie Ju-Long effortlessly carried his baggage who fainted after another bout of thrashing from Wen Ruohan. The Lan brothers left before that and unfortunately, it was only Cangse Sanren who was bothered enough to stop the irate young man.

The multitude of stars providing them with light, Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren warily watched as the young Jiang heir graced them with his attentions. Once blue-grey eyes found them, it felt as though the dark trees standing tall in a distance grew just another meter or two and the rustling of leaves became even more pronounced. Why does it seem that everything's transforming into a perfect setting of a nightmare?

"Now then…Lady Sanren?" Jiang FengMian addressed them then.

It was said in the most gentle voice imaginable accompanied with a heavenly smile but all these just caused two pairs of eyes to water a little.

Cangse Sanren tried to smile despite everything but it absolutely failed her when she saw the look deep down those blue-grey eyes. Her hands unconsciously clasped both of her partner-in-crime's.

She started to speak but her voice broke so she cleared her throat before starting again, gathering the courage she remembered she has, "Young lord, I have three scrolls here…do you want to see?"
