Of Cures, Tears and Sisterhood

'A-Niang!'

'A-Niang!'

Violet eyes flew open, giving way for tears to freely slide across the pale skin and to her pillow. The desperate cry of a certain young man was still echoing in her ears and Yu ZiYuan clutched her clothes to calm her racing heart as she abruptly sat up.

Jiang Cheng.

She can still hear him crying for her that last time.

She painfully gasped as more tears escaped her. It's been a while since she dreamed of her son but it never failed to reduce her to such a pathetic form. Thinking that nearly all recollections she has of him are filled with his downcast gaze, quivering shoulders, his tears and pleas, it makes her think of herself like some kind of monster.

Even her YanLi smiles in her dreams. But her son…

Shaking hands painfully gripped each other for support. She rationalized with herself that promising to do better wouldn't change anything now. At length her tremors subsided, leaving only the hurt behind.

From the corner of her eyes, she could imagine seeing the phantom of a certain sect leader in purple sitting at the edge of her bed, but even though it's her own delusions, she can't quite tell if he's looking at her with concern or disappointment.

Already, she feels tired.

She would have lain back down but her doors opened and she heard her maids carefully walk in. She could see their shadows kneel outside her closed bed curtain.

"Mistress, it's morning already. Would you like to get up now?" Yinzhu softly called out.

She remained quiet for some time but finding her resolve as always, she raised her head to glare at the ghost with blue-grey eyes that she can't escape from.

Pink lips opened once more to answer.

"Yes."

As she continued on with her morning routine, she nonchalantly asked her servants for any new worth of note.

It was but for a few seconds but it was enough for her to catch how the two looked at each other in alarm before calming down.

"There's nothing, mistress." Jinzhu composedly answered with a small smile.

Yu ZiYuan merely coldly returned the smile briefly before going back to her natural poker face and steely replied, "If you have the time to spout lies with that slight quiver, you might as well tell me everything even if it gives me displeasure."

The two maids froze before they kowtowed in front of their young miss in blue sect uniform, "We have sinned mistress! Please punish us!"

"Enough!" Yu ZiYuan barked once and imperiously ordered their composure, "Just tell me what it is."

"That is," Yinzhu started, obviously at a lost on what to do, "Well, I'm afraid that there are some rumors circulating everywhere…"

"Rumours?" the Third Lady of Meishan Yu raised an eyebrow and pierced her maid with a sceptical look. Just what kind of rumor would necessitate them to lie to her? "What rumors? And of whom?"

Silence ensued while the two poor souls try to gather their courage and before the famed Violet Spider lost her temper, Jinzhu managed to blurt out with a rare blush and panic, "Mistress, what you've done in Yunping City is fast spreading everywhere. And we don't know how but even the pin you used has been accurately known to everyone!"

At the mention of Yunping, Yu ZiYuan froze. And with every passing moment, the stiffness in her body seems to travel all around her cells to leave her as a breathing corpse.

What was that? Isn't that the secret that she specifically mentioned to all those concerned to never spread anywhere else? How come people are talking about it? Unbelievable, did someone speak of it? Who must she kill?

After interrogating her maids of the why and wherefores, she found out that a painting of the event and the details has been circulating everywhere and while this has only served to attract the admiration of every young cultivators at the daring and self-sacrificial stance of the daughter of Meishan Yu, all Yu ZiYuan has in mind is to find the culprit and ensure that they'll sleep with the fishes in the seas where that criminal cultivator wished to travel on.

"And you're saying that they know every detail of it? With no mistake?" sternly asked one Jiang FengMian with a visible frown on his handsome face. The serenity in them has been long chased away by the murder in his eyes, "How was this possible? Maiden Yu has not authorized it."

The purple theme of the room seemed a lot darker to the sweating servant as he quaveringly replied to the obviously put upon young master of their sect, "Forgive me, Young Master. We are still trying to find out while attempting to hush up any talk of it but it didn't seem to have started from any of the big clans who were also involved."

The senior servant, who was standing beside their esteemed young heir thereby giving him a fantastic view of the young man's throbbing vein at the back of his neck, cried rivers for his suffering fellow comrade currently kneeling on the floor.

I know, I know. You feel it, too, right? That's what I have to suffer every time as long as something's wrong with the Madam. Brother, do your best! Wei Chanze chanted a cheer in his heart.

Once the servant has been grilled and baked and picked upon until near death before being dismissed to find out more of the situation, the kind young master of Yunmeng Jiang was left with their guest and his servant while he contemplated with a gloomy stare over the hands he's holding together above his lips.

"I swear, Young Lord, it wasn't me." Cangse Sanren took advantage of the silence to cement her claim while she massaged her wrist that she nearly over-worked as she made more bribes…ahem, ahem! Peace offerings! She has everything under careful lock and seal because a certain young master might just take it for himself if she lets her guard down. Distrustful? Yes sir, she is!

"I know Lady Sanren." Jiang FengMian answered at length over his furrowed brows, "I'm only afraid of the distress this would cause Maiden Yu."

Young Master, share some of that compassion with me! Wei Changze wanted to shout but instead he mentioned, "There are some who criticized the actions we've taken but in general, people are at awe of the sacrificed they know she had to endure in order to apprehend the rouge cultivator. I'm sure it'll come to pass."

"But if it distresses her now…" the purple-clad heir insisted with a worried tone and Wei Changze nearly prostrated on the floor while crying out loud, Just confess already!

"I'm sure the Madame is a lot more mentally strong and if it concerns you so, we'll act according to the results of the investigation.

"This won't do." Jiang FengMian reasoned out as he focused his gaze on the lotuses outside of his study room's window, "Let's head on to Meishan Yu and ensure Maiden Yu that the rumors didn't start from us."

The two people with this love-struck young man merely gave respect and said they understood. Cangse Sanren was thinking that she'd better bring four of her most recent masterpieces just in case she'll need them and rejoiced that she'd see her friends soon.

"And make sure to bring in tea and pastries as well as a bunch of beautiful lotuses with us. Maiden Yu seemed to like those last time." Jiang FengMian added to their retreating figures.

Light footsteps echoed across the austere but still sophisticated hall.

'It suddenly happened, Yuan-er. But she's no longer in danger.'

A severe frown marred the beautiful young lady's jade-like face but those who knew her would recognize it to be one from worry rather than irritation.

'You'll know more than me. I'm aware this is not an illness but merely the result of her weak body.'

Soft lips formed into a tight line at the recollection of the dispirited tone of her sworn brother that she absolutely abhors to hear ever again from the usually exuberant man.

'Forgive me for not receiving you properly, Yuan-er. I'll investigate where the leak of what happened in Yunping came from as soon as possible.'

'No need, brother.'

When she landed in Qinghe this afternoon in order to inquire of the prisoner they apprehended not even a week ago in connection to the abysmally colorful words going around the street bearing her name, she was greeted by the news of her sworn brother's only concubine collapsing and teetering back and forth within Death's reach for the whole night. She would have asked why they didn't call for her to help but understood as well as anyone that it is not an illness that plagues Lady Wu Jiali but the fragile body she was born with.

She arrived at the entrance of the Unclean Realm and subconsciously thought someone was calling her. It could be her best friend who came and received the news with her but the voices around her where drowned by the turmoil inside her head. She paused in her steps and opened her qiankun pouch to take out a well-cared for book which contained some of her medical notes and copies from various pieces of valuable medical books that she can't always carry with her. She turned the white sheets, quickly arriving at a page she had perused multiple times already. The neat characters revealed a list of ingredients and recipe for an elixir she's been meaning to make.

Quite forgetting where she is in her focus, the Third Young Lady of Meishan Yu bit her lower lip hard in a rather unusual state of irrepressible fretting and self-loathing, a habit that she purposefully shed after getting married in her first life, her fingers nearly crumpling the papers underneath them.

True that she was gathering the ingredients she needed for the medicine she was planning to make for the lady of Qinghe Nie but she never thought to hasten her efforts thinking that she's got plenty of time yet since Nie MingJue lost his mother when he was 5 or 6 years of age, aside from the fact that some of them are rare and hard to come by.

How foolish! She grated herself. Evidently, she's been lulled by the remarkable comforts of her current surroundings that she unconsciously slacked! Thoughtless and absolutely absurd for someone like her!

True that it's not something directly affecting her but…she can finally change some things in her life. If it was completely beyond her then she wouldn't even think on it. How can she squander the chance to make things different this time around?

Also…if she can prevent her now godson from losing a mother, why shouldn't she? Especially when she's conscious that she left her own son to fend for himself before he's ready. It's why she was trying to find the ingredients albeit at a heedless pace. How could she be so stupid! If somehow, something happens to deviate from the original occurrence and the unthinkable happen to Lady Wu now…

"Maiden Yu, if you keep doing that, you'll likely wound yourself."

The anxious and serene voice jolted her from the stew of renewed disappointment she was immersing herself in. Unguardedly, amethyst orbs widened as she abruptly lifted them to meet the cerulean eyes of her former spouse. The concern swimming there reflected the regret she was feeling.

"I was told you were here and also just learned of what happened to Lady Wu. You must be quite distressed." Jiang FengMian, who was looking a little windswept from riding his sword from here to there for nearly half the day, felt his heart constrict at the never-before seen look of anxiety on his dear lady's countenance. He resisted the urge to caress her chin in order to persuade pearly white canines to liberate the plump lower lip. "I'd like to be of assistance."

She straightened her features back to the proud and cold profile that she's familiar with and silently but evenly uttered, "It's better to go to Brother Ju-Long for this, Young Master Jiang. I'm sure the family would appreciate your offer."

"If I wish to effectively help Young Master Nie, I'm certain that offering you my services would prove fruitful, Maiden Yu. Aren't you looking into it already?" a careful and peaceful smile was given her way from the purple-robed young lord, "Is there anything I can help with?"

'My Lady, can I help you with this?'

The kind inquiry was nearly overtaken by her memories, the youthful face replaced by the older one of the phantom, now wearing an unsure expression. If she'll think carefully, it's not the first time the man tried to provide her aid but the icy façade she wrapped herself with had never allowed her to take the proffered support.

'No need.'

Really, how foolish, the statuesque lady derided herself. The Violet Spider, as though wanting to erase any evidence of her folly, unlike in her past life, unwaveringly faced this kindness she can at least believe to not be mere penance from the man who couldn't grant his love instead, "Thanking Young Master Jiang for his help. This young one gladly accepts." There is no humility in her tone but the salute she gave indicated her respect.

At the sides, Wei Changze nearly forgot how to breathe, afraid as he was to do anything that might distract the Madam from his young master while Cangse Sanren, for once, is actively holding on to Hou MeiXiu in order to constructively prevent the young woman from interfering with the cute couple now, especially since the First Young Lady of YunXiao Sect was trying to get her best friend's attention when they came. When the comrade-in-arms saw the violet-eyed cultivator bow a little in gratitude, accepting their assistance, they visibly melted in relief to Hou MeiXiu's sheepish watch.

Still quite greedy for her attentions, Jiang FengMian proceeded to inquire as to his lady's plans.

"I need a five-lined elixir so I'm gathering the remaining ingredients for it."

When he heard her answer, the illustrious young master immediately understood what she wanted, "It can recreate qi-channels, wash the bone-marrow, expel impurities and renew the foundations of the body." She further explained even though her companion ought to know the benefits of such a highly sought after pill.

"Will Master Wen make it?" Jiang FengMian queried. He knows little about the particulars of such precious elixirs but there is one thing he's concerned about, "If the medicine is so potent, will Lady Wu's body be able to take it?"

A lot more conscious now, Yu ZiYuan resisted the urge to bite down her lower lip once more, frowning once more, "This one, I understand of course. Which is why I have to make it with pure Yin energy instead of Master." It needs to be refined with pure yin energy so Lady Wu, as a woman, would surely have no adverse reaction, and only another woman with plenty of yin energy would be able to make it so. But the production of the pill is what gives her apprehension.

A five-lined elixir is a high-tier 5th grade medicine, something that even someone as illustrious as her teacher in the arts of healing would need to be careful about making, what more for her who, despite having such a high-level of cultivation, only have a few years of pill-refining experience under her belt. She was thinking that if she's got a few more years to improve, this elixir wouldn't pose much trouble but she's all of a sudden confronted by the need to make it as soon as she can.

Seeing the silent unease lurking behind the vibrant wine-colored orbs, the older man spoke gently, "I'm sure Maiden Yu can achieve it."

Yu ZiYuan wanted to scoff at the other's blind faith, "Those are rather careless words, Young Master Jiang."

"I don't mean to pressure Maiden Yu, only…" the young cultivator lowered himself a little in order to line his eyes with hers in an earnest gaze, "I truly believe you capable. Maiden Yu just can't seem to fail. Not even if you try."

The irritating skipping of her heart distracting her, Yu ZiYuan couldn't stop the short exhale of breath that is halfway between a disbelieving laugh and an exasperated sigh, "Attempt the impossible?" she taunted a little, raising her chin slightly in challenge.

Unfazed still, Jiang FengMian easily returned it with a smile, "For Maiden Yu, it is not at all impossible."

Quite unaware of the barely there smile she's sporting, Yu ZiYuan finally found the courage to move forward decidedly.

"A-Xiu—" she started as she looked somewhere behind her, looking for the green-clad female cultivator.

"Oh, now you know me?" the First Young Lady of YunXiao sect teasingly returned, however, which earned her a questioning brow from her friend. This girl, really…Hou MeiXiu could only pout. She doesn't know what happened but she felt extremely removed from the conversation happening just now. Or was it due to the threatening linen on Cangse Sanren's and Wei Changze's hands that looks ready to press against her mouth at the slightest sound? Why did the air all at once taste like dog food? At this determined participation from one of the hopefuls, Hou MeiXiu instantaneously felt the real threat of losing her closest friend's regard to someone else and was rather stunned at the discovery.

While she can safely say that her friend never had anyone in her sights since her debut several months ago, she had an inkling that this young master from Yunmeng is starting to be a special case. She doesn't know why when her friend was liable to be colder, more curt or evasive in the presence of this young man in purple. She tried to observe her friend more and found that the comfortable set of her lips and the lighter shade of her eyes is not a bad look at all. What a shame since she was hoping to recommend someone decent from Lanling Jin that they might see each other often after marriage. But she supposes they can't produce a contender good enough to pit against this eager lord from the famed Jiang clan. Tsk, tsk, tsk, she thought with no real heat.

The young lady cleared her throat and stepped out of the danger of being smothered by a certain rogue cultivator for interfering with the conversing pair, "Well, are you finally going to save me?" when a confused look entered violet orbs, she changed her tune, "I mean, what is it you need?"

"I need help collecting some herbs. Since it's like this, can I ask you to get me some Spirit-gathering herbs? I suppose you can get them from the Black market but you can also harvest them on Mount Huang." After thinking further, she continued a little more sedately, "I'll have to ask QingShan to get some disciples to come with her and get a Jade Blood tree bark near Lake Tai. It's close to Gusu…"

Hearing this Hou MeiXiu exclaimed at this unexpected craftiness from the usually unsympathetic woman, "Are you trying to help First Young Master Lan, A-Yuan?" she whispered coyly against one ear and while she only got a sharp glare in reply, she undauntedly cheered, "First Young Master Lan will worship you until he dies if he knew. Someone can finally accompany Second Young Master Lan in the venture."

"Are you going under Qi deviation?" Yu ZiYuan snapped at the other's nonsensical tirade. Hou MeiXiu good-naturedly let the comment slide with merely putting on a poor imitation of an aggrieved expression. After all that's better than bickering with this girl and end up getting charcoaled. "La, I said I'm going to do it. I'll handle informing Lady Liu what you just said." And with that, the green-robed young lady saluted to the others a little and went her way, aware that this must be done in haste.

The departing back gave Wei Changze an epiphany and since it looks like his own Young Master arrived at the same conclusion and was about to give him the smile of Death, he had no choice but to immediately recommend himself for a task, "Are there any other items that needs retrieving, Madam—cough—Maiden Yu? This humble servant would be more than happy to get it!"

Not about to be left behind to third-wheel while getting silently threatened by the young lord, Cangse Sanren, while lamenting being unable to accompany the esteemed miss of Meishan Yu and see her in action, also spiritedly volunteered getting out of their boy's way.

Frowning a bit at the choices before her, Yu ZiYuan contemplated where to send them, "I already have the Thousand-year ginseng which leaves the Heavenly Imperial Snow Lotus seeds and Thousand Leaf Cleansing Snow Lotus."

Cangse Sanren knows of these two precious plants and chose for the couple the one found in the more picturesque habitat, "We'll get the Heavenly Imperial Snow Lotus seeds! You two get the other one then."

Yu ZiYuan stared for the vibrant female just selected the more difficult of the two and reiterated the weight of her choice, "You can only get them from the top of the Holy Mountain."

"Like a walk in the park!"

"It's freezing cold there."

"Something I experience all the time."

"Guarded by the blue-eyed, four-tailed giant white fox."

"Surely, the cutest thing I'll lay eyes on in days!"

"Are you sure?"

"Uh-huh!" the shorter lady then paused as her notice was overtaken by something else before gasping, "Lady Yu, are you perhaps worried about me?" even without an answer, feeling absolutely moved, Cangse Sanren threw herself towards the elegant maiden in blue, arms open wide. "Lady Yu!"

The attempt, however, was thwarted by a certain tall gentleman in purple who expertly got a fistful of the immaculate robes in red and white of his impetuous guest. With a composed smile that froze the one worn by the bright young lady being held by her collar, Jiang FengMian settled Cangse Sanren on her feet farther than her original place beside a face-palming Wei Changze. "Let's behave ourselves, Lady Sanren." was the calm reminder.

Feeling her insides chilled at the menace hiding behind that dimpled face, the rogue cultivator instantly answered "Yes!" but the high-pitched voice was laden with her nervousness causing her to clear her throat to evenly repeat, "Yes."

Wanting to nurse a headache, Yu ZiYuan was internally harrumphing that Jiang FengMian should hold a tighter leash on his lady is he disapproves of her jumping on someone else that much. Shaking her head a little, she saluted, "This one offers her gratitude for your help. I shall handle the Thousand Leaf Cleansing Snow Lotus while the three of you please take care of—"

Rising panic caused two pairs of arms to flail around while Jiang FengMian unconsciously took a step towards his lady, wanting to clear things out. "I shall accompany you, Maiden Yu." firmly stated the Yunmeng Jiang heir.

A little muddled by their decision, the young mistress of Meishan questioned with a near scowl, "Wouldn't you rather go with them?"

"NO!" the loud shout from Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren actually startled Yu ZiYuan into taking a step backwards.

A moment of awkward silence later and Yu ZiYuan was just about to suggest a switch in partners that her ex-husband might find some time alone with his beloved despite the irritation that she even has to do this for him when Jiang FengMian addressed his closest friend and aide, "Changze?"

"Yes!" his survival instinct blaring in his mind, the poor servant stood in attention and excused himself and his accomplice in a loud voice, "Madame, we have to go get ready for frostbites, bite marks and the possibility of being maimed beyond recognition. But please rest assured! This is an easier death!"

Taking Cangse Sanren under one arm, the tall man ran out of the Unclean Realm, his shout of "Please enjoy yourselves!" echoing all across the grounds.

Jiang FengMian had the conscience to press a fist against his lips in embarrassment at the act when he glanced at his lady to see her wear an actually bewildered expression. He chuckled, Cute.

"What—" the words tumbled out of Yu ZiYuan's lips. She can't make heads or tails of what just happened, wanting to back track her memory to pinpoint where it started getting strange.

"I guess they were eager to help." The Jiang heir shamelessly explained.

In one of the many courtyards in the illustrious sect, lying comfortably in a plush bed in her room, Wu JiaLi opened her tired eyes to see her lord lightly press a damp cloth on her sweaty forehead in a gesture of uncharacteristic gentleness, "I thought I heard someone shrieking. Did you hear that, my lord?" She murmured as loudly as she can in case it was just her hallucination.

Nie Ju-Long looked out the window with a slight frown before continuing what he was doing, "I did."

"What was it?"

"I don't know. Maybe a man trying to get out of death row? Do you want me to send someone to investigate?"

Feeling exhausted still, the noble lady briefly shook her head and tried to smile, "No need. Perhaps it's a wingman trying to avoid getting in the way of a couple."

This caused Nie Ju-Long to recall who his earlier guest was and the usual tail shadowing her every steps and tapered off his guffaw before smirking at his concubine, "I think our lady is psychic."

Wondering just what is in her husband's mind that would entertain him so, Wu JiaLi successfully gave a smile, "Is that so?"

"Yes," the great man caressed the wet hairline, lowering his voice a little, "Now, rest well and we'll ask Yuan-er if she met any of her admirers at the door later."

Brown eyes met and the slender woman thought to push for a topic that's been long ignored by her husband, "My lord, what I spoke to you before—"

"Shhh," the cultivator took hold of one pale hand, breaking eye contact, a little lost on what to do, "Rest."

When the warm lips of this usually boisterous man graced her forehead, an act that none of his peers would associate with the uproarious cultivator, Wu JiaLi thought that she could allow herself a little selfishness in keeping this moment to herself.

"Very well."

Fluffy clouds decorated the blue sky to entertain the cool winds blowing all around and it would have been the perfect day for a picnic considering that the pair of cultivators who just landed is currently surrounded by a nice plane filled with miles and miles of wild flowers, painting the grounds with different hues, a forest facing them a few steps away. That is if the backdrop doesn't also include the distant misty peaks of Jue di Gorge.

While ensconced a fair distance from the mysterious land that until recently just housed the Endless Abyss, Yu ZiYuan felt that she shouldn't take things for granted and guarded eyes looked around, ensuring that no nasty surprises would spring about so early in their mission.

Red-violet eyes glanced at her companion for a while and she once again had to stop herself from meshing her eyebrows together, quite regretting not stopping the man's servant from fleeing and also for not having the presence of mind to get another disciple to accompany them.

Thankfully, she recovered enough throughout their current acquaintance that she can hear, do and feel more than just the sprinting of this irritating organ in her chest. She managed to survive the ride here by talking about the recently closed Endless Abyss and the other's inquiry on how she managed to find it, complimenting their Meishan Yu sect for bringing it up in the last discussion and she returned it with appropriate commendations on how the now completely established Five Great Sects did well to fully close it since their Meishan Yu sect lacked the manpower to take care of it alone.

Relieved that her tightly woven stories of its discovery was well-received, the female cultivator was over-all satisfied with how the event transpired though a little annoyed that they still couldn't accomplish it without the Qishan Wen sect's help. Yu ZiYuan was realistic in her contribution and merely sought the credits due to them since there's no way her sect can tackle the rift separating the demon world and this with her sect's current resources. While unable to join the great sects, the prestige of Meishan Yu undoubtedly received a tremendous boost with this and her father's reach and influence became larger.

"I understand that we cannot ride our swords beyond this point." The tranquil young master observed their surroundings, lamenting that such a perfect spot can't even move his lady's heart into having a more romantic view of their current situation.

"Yes. We'll have to enter the forest from here." Yu ZiYuan answered curtly before digging into her pouch for a bottle of pills. After getting two, she handed one to the tall man and swallowed the other one herself, "Drink it, Young Master Jiang. While this place is relatively safer being outside of Jue di Gorge, there are a few plants as we go further in that could induce hallucinations. This dose is not that strong since it might have an adverse effect so please keep this in mind."

Without needing to be told twice and not even requiring her explanation, the adept cultivator instantly put the pill in his mouth and swallowed it before thanking his guide. "I feel fortunate that Maiden Yu is such a capable individual."

Feeling the heat creep up her cheeks at the other's incessant supply of polite praises, Yu ZiYuan controlled her expression and only murmured a simple reply.

Wishing that they'll accomplish what they intended as soon as possible, the young lady took a step forward and the pair entered the forest.

While the foliage up above are too cramped that very few rays of sunlight could penetrate, the trunks of the tall trees are not that tightly packed together so the two managed to traverse the woodland with relative ease.

They walked and walked, alert to any sound that doesn't belong there or sudden movements that might not be entirely harmless. It took them a full shichen before arriving at the part of the woods that contains absolutely crystal white trees, from the roots to the leaves, that it felt as though each of them are giving of a dull shine in the benign albeit dreary place.

As cultivators, they could feel the hum of dense spiritual energy coming from the very ground and mixing with the air. It would have been a truly comfortable place if not for the frosty chill that mirrors the middle of winter coming from every translucent bark.

Seeing it for the first time in both lifetimes, Yu ZiYuan thought it was rather a pretty set up despite the cold and pleased that they arrived at last, a low hum of approval escaped her.

From the looks of the man with her, it seems that he too commends the beauty that can be found here, ignorant of the fact that it's only due to her apparent admiration.

"We'll have to split up to look, Young Master Jiang." The Third Young Lady of Meishan Yu addressed her former husband, "Just look for flowers that look as though they're made from clusters of snow, usually it has eight petals." She explained before giving him a spiritual pouch and one of her handkerchiefs, "Remember that the flowers cannot be touched by human flesh or it will melt, so use this cloth to pluck it and put it in this pouch." she'll strangle him silly if he makes a mistake but she wisely left that out of her commentary. "This is a spiritual place so we're safe here." She added, wanting to dispel any strain for their well-being. Knowing that the man would be able to control his own body temperature to aid him amidst the abnormally icy air, she did not worry for this health. And with that, she went one way into the diamond-like trees, looking up in search of her target.

Jiang FengMian quite loath to separate with his beloved but had no desire to go against her wishes, and so with unwilling steps, he started his own search, convincing himself that succeeding will earn her smile and accelerate their reunion.

But of course, not even the sharpest of scrutinies will change the fact that a rare thing is…well, rare. Half a shichen had pass but Yu ZiYuan hasn't found anything remotely resembling a snowy bloom. It's a small mercy that the place is vast and therefore doesn't dash out the hope that at least one may be found. Multiple times she wondered how her companion is faring but resisted the urge to look around for him in concern. He'll be able to take care of himself just fine.

It was a long while after that that she noticed a beautiful arrangement of crystalline petals a few branches above her head. With heart-pounding, she climbed the tall tree she's under. Contrary to their fragile appearance, each bark is strong. The real trouble was the slippery and cold quality of the smooth surface. With extreme care, she reached for the small flower with her handkerchief, a little anxious that she might crush it unknowingly. Thankfully, it was as hard as a real gem.

Jumping down, she peeked at her spoil and saw a flower with petals seemingly made from crushed icicles, the narrow and elongated petals reflecting what little light may be found there and she thought that it's quite a wondrous creation.

Quite amazed that she finally found one, she attentively placed it in another pouch and swiftly hunted for her partner. Curiously, it didn't take her any time at all as Jiang FengMian was in sight within a few moments and she was happy enough to announce her findings, "I found one, Young Master Jiang!"

With a pleasant smile, the gentleman congratulated her, "I knew Maiden Yu would."

One is enough but in order to be safe, she would have liked to get another. She wanted to ask the man if he, too, found one but knowing first-hand how hard it was, even she was a little reluctant to post an awkward question.

Sensing her mind, Jiang FengMian kindly spoke first, "I was fortunate enough to triumph in the search myself."

This perked the blue-robed cultivator and returned, "You found one?"

"Three."

"Excuse me?"

"I found three." With a strangely bashful countenance, the Yunmeng Jiang heir showed the pouch she handed to him earlier to reveal three nearly identical flowers like the one she was holding previously.

Yu ZiYuan was speechless at this man's luck and marginally wide purple orbs studied the cultivator before her.

Jiang FengMian could feel his heart leap to his throat at his lady's intent gaze, thanking what fate allowed him to be of help to her by finding what she needs.

He won't admit it but he actually found the three much, much earlier and was about to meet up with her to end their quest when he observed the frustrated resolution the tall young woman has as she scouted for the crucial plant from one tree to another, knowing that her pride won't let her fail here, her dedication astounding. He decided to let her obtain her own, content with following her from a distance. And the young lord was awarded for his patience by the radiant glow of victory that suffused her once she claimed one.

"That's great." Yu ZiYuan exclaimed in a low, numbly bewildered tone, "Young Master Jiang must have worked hard."

Silently ecstatic at her approbation, Jiang FengMian took the chance to guide her soft fingers around the small bag with his own, "I am extremely glad to be of help." He whispered softly.

Finally gathering the wits to lower her eyes to their intertwined fingers, she became once again conscious of the scurrying state of her heart and wanted to grimace at herself. Casually taking a step back and naturally breaking his hold, she genuinely imparted her appreciation though, "Thank you, Young Master Jiang."

Securing their harvest, the two departed from the glacial woods and continued to the clearing that will allow them to ride their swords. There were no words exchanged during the trip but there was a perceptible absence of the wall of terseness and disregard that normally separates the Violet Spider from the Yunmeng Jiang heir which was enough for Jiang FengMian to maintain the small smile on his lips.

It was not until halfway through their walk that something odd happened.

Yu ZiYuan just finished observing her companion out of the corner of her eyes when a childish laugh rang in her ears and she stopped in her tracks. A chill permeated her blood as though the ice from before began chasing her here.

This was immediately perceived by the older man, "Maiden Yu?"

When barks of puppies followed the boyish giggles, she started shivering. Despite realizing what's happening, vivid amethyst darted here and there, half-dreading and half-longing for a vision that shouldn't be here. She thought she saw a small purple-clad back or a cute, furry tail run around on one side and when a call of 'A-Niang' reached her, she felt her knees weaken a bit.

She almost jumped when a warm touch gripped her forearm but it grounded her somewhat.

"Maiden Yu." Jiang FengMian called out again, alarmed at the change in her. Having been warned beforehand, it didn't take him long to figure out what the matter is. Thinking that she's still lucid, big hands softly touched delicate cheeks, trying to catch wavering eyes, hating the fear and pain overflowing there, "Maiden Yu. It's not real. Whatever you're seeing," he steadily implored her, "it's not real."

Despite the tender heat holding on to her, her gaze was snatched pass blue-grey eyes and a broad shoulder and to the innocent view of a boy of about 6 cheerfully playing with three puppies on the forest floor. Her heart thundered and even her breath suffocated her.

"Maiden Yu, it's not real."

"I know." She rasped even though she can't rip her eyes from the memory of her son.

The realistically conjured boy regarded her with pure eyes as he raised both of his arms to get her attention.

'A-Niang!'

"I know." her cold whisper colored by a hint of helplessness.

More voices sought her out; some of laughter, girlish entreaties, barks, tears and even shouts.

'My Lady, please.'

"You're not real." the words slicing her as well.

Shaky fingers grabbed the hand detaining her and she finally met the clear azure orbs on the concern face of her current escort, the now familiar face giving her the courage she requires.

"We should go." quivering lips hoarsely uttered and without letting go of the thing that braces her to the truth, she resumed her steps, half-running, resolutely fighting the dreams clamouring for her return, dragging the young heir of Yunmeng Jiang, who also participates in the apparition, behind her.

She doesn't know how long it's been already, her every breath a hammer to her chest, the path blurring in front of her. She kept hitting the trees but not even bruises or scratches could break her wretched strides. There's fire surrounding her now, clashes of swords piercing her eardrums, enraged yells stoking the wrath that never really left her but what tortures her more is the timbre of an adolescent begging for her.

'A-Niang! What are you doing?!'

'A-Niang, Father isn't back yet.'

'If anything happens can't we manage through it together first?!'

'A-Niang!'

'A-Niang!'

Damnation! There's nothing she could do! She can't go back! She can't save them anymore! She's no longer part of that life! Not it's good nor it's bad! Not even if she wants to!

An unyielding tug at the hand retaining the comfort of another's flesh, caused Yu ZiYuan to lose her balance and pivot on her feet, abruptly finding herself in a firm embrace, a fierce purple shade drowning her cloudy perspective and an anguished plead right beside her ear, "Shh, Maiden Yu, you're okay. It's alright." A deep but compassionate voice constantly supplying solace, "It's fine now. It can't hurt you again."

She was trying to catch her breath, stop the unceasing convulsion swaying her and make sense of what's happening.

"This time, I'll be with you, My Lady."

The words barely penetrate her as she chants to herself words that she demanded herself to believe a million times already. I'm fine! I'm fine! I'm fine!

"So please don't cry."

Those beseeching words forced her to register the cruel, soundless tears slipping down her face.

"It's okay. This time, truly, it's going to be alright."

Despite his previous words about abating her tears, the gentle, uniform strokes on her back seem to dare her to let out the sentiments that she never could properly express.

Her face safely tucked under the man's chin, she could freely let go of any inhibitions and the powerful hold caging her allowed her this rare moment. Holding a fistful of purple robes near her face, she burrowed her face further in that warmth and let tears fall as they wish.

It could have been a just a minute or several hours but the careful pats on her back didn't rest.

Once he deemed her calm enough, Jiang FengMian quietly put one of his arms under her knees with the other remaining on her back and carried her. She didn't resurface from where her head is placed against the crook of his neck and when slender arms wordlessly wrapped themselves around his shoulders and neck in muted acceptance, the young man smiled a little before slowly making his way out of the forest.

Fresh breeze accompanied by the sweet scents of wild blooms met them when they emerged from the forest. Jiang FengMian thought that he was already walking slowly but felt that the journey back was a little too fast. Finding a smooth and sizeable rock, he reluctantly settled his charge and was regretful that his lady readily let go of her hold on him. He knelt on one knee in front of her figure and cautiously attempted to peek at her bowed head.

It was only a moment later when Yu ZiYuan directly returned his gaze, her countenance now shows the usual indifferent pride and forbidding majesty she is known for. Despite the lack of humility, Jiang FengMian smiled in contentment now that she's better.

The orange glow of the horizon as dusk approach quite aided in masking the red-rimmed eyes and the flushed cheeks and nose but couldn't quite conceal the tears the clung to long lashes. He took a clean handkerchief from his pouch and offered it to her despite knowing that she's got her own, internally hoping she won't discover that he never gave back the linen she lent unlike the pouch that now contains the ingredients they need.

Amethyst orbs eyed the cloth and gradually reached for it as she faintly articulated, "You have my thanks, Young Master Jiang."

"Do not mind it, Maiden Yu."

'My Lady.'

Something was knocking in her consciousness at the address, "Earlier," at this, violet eyes slowly met with blue-grey ones, "Did you call for me?"

There was no change in the expression of the man with her except to offer another saccharine smile, "Yes, I said 'Maiden Yu'." the Yunmeng Jiang heir serenely responded, "I didn't know you actually heard me."

The confident undercurrent in the words convinced Yu ZiYuan. Who is she to question anything when she was out of it? She should be assuaged that he's not asking her for details and clarifications. "I see. I thought…but it must have been my imagination."

The pleasant bearing of the gentleman vanished to be replaced with light distress, "It must have been a nightmare."

Thinking of what she had to relive and of the adorable face of her son, she commented, a little subdued, red-violet eyes on the scarlet sky, "It wasn't all bad."

Intent on the regal profile, the purple-clad cultivator released a small, helpless sigh, "That's good then."

Looking back at the man, she finally offered, "We ought to go now."

Jiang FengMian didn't move. He didn't want to. While it's not the safest place for them, this space felt as though it contained only them.

And he hasn't had enough yet.

Hasn't heard enough of her voice. Hasn't seen enough of her face. Hasn't basked enough in that presence. How could he have the heart to move away and share her attentions with everyone else again?

"Young Master Jiang?"

He exhaled softly. If you so wish, "Very well."

After gathering all the ingredients, Yu ZiYuan had to take some time to thank her contributors and settle accounts or even give them aide if they came back injured like in the case of Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren who returned with icicles still clinging to their hair while being black and blue in the face.

She would have applied some special ointment on Wei Changze's fingers but who would have expected for the comely servant to howl and leapt and roll a whole yard away from her even before their skins touch. He looked ready to throw himself back to the Holy Mountains than to be assisted by the Third Lady of Meishan Yu and Yu ZiYuan didn't know whether to feel offended or concerned if not for Jiang FengMian who was standing behind her at the time and took the balm saying that he will take care of it. Since the kowtowing attendant at a distance was too pitiful even for her, she decided to let it go.

Faced with all she needs, Yu ZiYuan focused her attention as she sat in a lotus position in a secluded room in Meishan Yu.

She only needs half the amount of what she currently possesses so it is fine for her to fail once. But just looking at the pouch containing the Thousand Leaf Cleansing Snow Lotus that she took with her former husband, she was loath to waste them on her incompetence.

This is her test. He said he believes she can do it. And she's never been one to easily succumb to defeat. She'll make it happen. It's not just about her, this medicine could give someone a future – it's worth all her efforts.

After taking a deep breath, she eyed the great furnace in front of her and raised a hand to activate her qi.

"Let's begin."

It was three days later when the kiln produced five pills after being continuously guided by her spiritual energy.

Pale fingers inspected the warm, round pill and saw special markings and, to her surprise, counted seven lines instead of five. The lines would indicate the level of the pill which shows that she created something of higher quality.

Quite disbelieving, she quickly tidied the place up and nearly ran out of the room in order to see her teacher and ask him to evaluate her handiwork.

The chilly grey of the sky greeted her and surmised that it's just dawn. She'll have to wait a while before she can go and see him. But even while she has time to spare, the uncommon little bubble of barely suppressed excitement had her rushing out of the courtyard she borrowed from her father.

She turned a corner and was about to pass a general garden in the sect when an unforeseen sight encountered her. In the open pavilion beside the medium-size, man-made lake, surrounded by artfully maintained trees and bushes with clusters of vibrant flowers in several locations, there was a small fire kindled to warm the place and two individuals seems to be inside.

Stone garden lanterns lighted her way as she sedately came to inspect who would be using it so early only to find two guests in the figure of her medical teacher and her former life's husband.

"Master Wen, Young Master Jiang!" she exclaimed in a hushed voice, quite taken aback but automatically raised both her hands in a salute when the two men found her, "I didn't know we have guests, forgive me."

A cheerful greeting from the younger man was extended to her, "Maiden Yu, you're finally out of seclusion. I'm happy to see you're well."

"…quite, thank you." Even while her mind is racing to clarify her confusion at this strange gathering, Yu ZiYuan still find herself civilly replying, "I just exited seclusion. To what do we owe the honour of your visit?"

"Little Yuan, you came just in time." The old and kind voice of Wen Chuali jovially addressed her, "This master was fetched by Young Master Jiang, saying that you'll most definitely need my advice regarding that five-lined elixir. How did it go?"

Replacing her gaze on the purple-clad cultivator for a few seconds, she handed the bottle of medicine to her teacher, "I just finished it. Will Master please check it for me?"

"I estimated that you'll be done after 3 days. But I must say that you're a few hours earlier." The old man with a head of white hair laughed with pride as he opened the bottle and first lightly sniffed the contents, smiling, "You really do exceed expectations, Little Yuan." After examining the light brown pill, the benevolent healer let out an expression of awe, "Oho, look at this, it's a seven-lined elixir!" a delighted laugh sounded across the garden, "How can you be so good, Little Yuan?"

"Will it still be suitable for Lady Wu, Master?" despite the heaps of compliment, Yu ZiYuan's main concern is if it would still accomplish what she originally wanted.

"Worry not, child." The doctor reassured with a smile as he handed back the bottle to her, "This would be received even better by the lady. Just make sure to tell her to manage her qi well after."

Quietly expelling a sigh of relief, the Violet Spider saluted, "This one thanks Master for his words."

"Good girl, good girl." The teacher nodded his head in approval, "I have things to do now but make sure to visit me soon so we can talk." And after inclining his head to the young man who all but drag him here in amusement, the old cultivator walked away to leave the two alone. "No need to see me out."

The young lady immediately addressed the young lord after her teacher disappeared from view, "Thanking Young Master Jiang for his help. I hope our reception was not inadequate."

"No need for thanks, Maiden Yu. It was something I decided to do. Apologies for surprising you." Jiang FengMian smoothly prolonged the encounter by sitting down once more and gesturing for the young lady to join him, "I asked Sect Leader Yu to not bother with our presence since we were just waiting for you. We were comfortable enough I assure you." He finished as he poured some fresh tea on a clean cup for the new arrival.

The heat from the cup warmed her cold hands and she gratefully brought it to her lips, watching the skies lighten up bit by bit, her straight hair gently dancing in the winds.

"I noticed that you made more than one pill." Jiang FengMian started again in case he gets caught staring.

"I was fortunate enough to end up with five."

"Do not downgrade your hard-work to mere luck." The young lord reproached lightly and the Third Lady of Meishan Yu was ruefully reminded that her YanLi was good-natured for a reason. "If you sell them in the black market, it'll most definitely earn you a lot."

"True, but I think I can do more than just let a nameless nobody gain its benefits."

As he would have proclaimed it a good idea even if she said that she'll throw the lot on the nearest pond, the cultivator had no problem smiling, "And what does Maiden Yu have in mind?"

Yu ZiYuan continued to survey the horizon as she contemplated, when the idea formed in her head, she looked at her companion who forgot to breathe at the tiny smile forming in those lush lips, the morning light illuminating her radiance.

"I'm going to give it away."

"WHAT?! YOU'RE GOING TO GIVE IT AWAY JUST LIKE THAT?!"

Yu ZiYuan scowled at the ringing in her ears as she put two fingers against her best friend's forehead and pushed the overzealous young lady away from her.

"You speak as though I'll give it away in charity. Those here will receive it."

The four other young ladies in the room stared at each other before going back to the stately female cultivator in sky-blue robes.

"This is such a precious pill, Shijie." Liu QingShan put her hands together at the kindness of her elder martial sister, "Won't you want to put it to better use?"

"What better use is there?" one eyebrow loftily raised itself in a gesture of derision but the women present could only feel the importance this accomplished young lady placed on them.

"A-are you sure you want even me to accept it, Lady Yu?" Cangse Sanren was quite disbelieving as she fidgeted on the chair given to her in the bedroom of the esteemed concubine of Nie Ju-Long. She's didn't know that she became close enough to the little mistress to be granted such favour.

Scrutinising the grey-eyed rogue cultivator, the Violet Spider just nodded her head. She considered this carefully and far it is for her to be a saint, she wouldn't want to see the demise of any of these women, either due to the connection she forged with them or to secure a better future than she had seen before. It goes without saying that she'll be taking the last elixir for herself. This ought to help them all.

"Lady Yu!" Cangse Sanren would have jumped to bestow a bear hug on this lovely lass had not a weak voice deterred her.

"My Lady Yu, I can't even begin to think how to repay this." The soft tone of the barely recovered Wu JiaLi draw all eyes on the woman sitting on the opulent bed, "To think you went all this way for me."

"If you have time to speak like this then you can just take it. Mind what I said you should do after." A little brusque at the extent of the other's appreciation, Yu ZiYuan tried to veil her embarrassment with a frown, "Get better and we're even."

"Lady Yu is so kind to me." Lady Wu pressed her sleeves against her lips to gently laugh at this awkward young lady's stance, "I will gladly take it." She received the elixir and looked at the other young ladies with her meaningfully.

"Well, if you're sure." Hou MeiXiu straightened the arms she folded under her chest in order to take one of the pills.

"Thank you, Shijie." Liu QingShan gratefully accepted the other one, giving off such a sweet aura that would have killed the future sect leader of Gusu Lan sect had he the luck to see it.

"It's like a toast." Cangse Sanren blissfully proclaimed as she received the fourth pill, "To my exceptional Lady Yu's happiness!" she beamed, raising the hand holding the precious medicine.

Yu ZiYuan would have scoffed at the frivolous remark when the others followed.

"To the Goddess of Divine Lightning!" Hou MeiXiu trumpeted, "May she allow my future son to wed her daughter!" she added slyly.

"A-Xiu." purple eyes flashed slightly at the teasing, a prick in her heart masked by the furrowed brows, "I think I shouldn't accept unless the boy will come crawling to ask for the marriage himself." Knowing any future child won't be the same as what she had lost, she didn't think promising anything would be fruitful.

"To the Lady of the Crimson Sunset!" in a bout of excitement, Liu QingShan took the remarkable chance to say the epithet aloud, "May she allow any of my future children wed hers as well." since it was voiced already, she can't let herself lose a chance to say a prayer distinctly.

Yu ZiYuan massaged her temples and tried to pinpoint who of the two troublemakers in the room was adversely influencing her usually prudent junior martial sister. She was beginning to flush at the spectacle they're showing to the only wedded woman in the room, not predicting said lady to also raise her hand with a lively albeit dignified statement.

"To sisterhood."

Getting their attention, the kind woman smiled with all the energy she can, "I don't see why we can't. I'd be very happy, wouldn't you?"

Somewhat shocked at the turn of events since she only ever formed such a bond with Hou MeiXiu in her previous life and Nie Ju-Long in this before, wholly sensible to the fact that her person isn't exactly what others would be lining up to form a connection with, a hint of elation began quietly blossoming in her chest. And though her face remained impassive, setting aside calculations and the like, she herself lifted her hand a little to say, "To sisterhood."

Not quite understanding what warranted the sparkling joy shining in the other four ladies' eyes at this declaration; they all raised their hands and spoke in differing kinds of volume and tone but the same joy:

"To sisterhood!"

After suffering her sworn brother's appreciative, bone-crushing hug, Yu ZiYuan finally stepped into the receiving area of the Unclean Realm with two sobbing creatures clinging to her sleeves.

"This heartless woman! I thought she'd never forge a sisterhood with me if I begged," Hou MeiXiu sniffed in satisfaction, "I'm your best friend but even I was afraid you'll turn me down! Where's the justice here?!"

"I'm so happy, Big Sister ZiYuan!" Cangse Sanren, who readily changed her address, cried while rubbing her cheek on a silk sleeve, "I just have one big, scary, fatal hurdle left!"

Liu QingShan was chuckling demurely at the sides when she noticed a tall figure in white and promptly said, "Shijie, I just have a few words for First Young Master Lan. Please inform me if we're about to depart."

Three pairs of curious eyes followed the lovely young woman who went to the flustered heir of Gusu Lan sect.

The two young ladies cuddling her arms have comically incredulous expressions with their mouth ajar.

"Oho!" The First Young Lady of YunXiao sect mused, "Is that really our QingShan conversing with First Young Master Lan? I guess she took your advice well, A-Yuan! Well now, maybe you're unexpectedly a good match-maker. Should I start calling you the Goddess of the Red Thread?" the lady looked at her sworn sister and raised both eyebrows in question.

The grousing retort they were expecting didn't come, the silly thought surprisingly taking hold of Yu ZiYuan's consciousness.

Of all things, does she perhaps have an unexpected talent for match-making?

Such a ridiculous notion, isn't it?

Red-violet eyes automatically went to the side of the courtyard where two disciples in purple stood, immediately meeting blue-grey eyes. Thinking that they were waiting for the pretty rogue cultivator still clutching her sleeve, she asked her best friend to look over her junior martial sister while she decided to deliver Cangse Sanren to her companions.

Steeling her nerves for what she was about to do, no matter how uncomfortable it is for her. She wanted to reciprocate the kindness she's been receiving from her ex-husband, not blind to the compassion of the naturally altruistic man. He's really too virtuous, she internally sighed, damn him.

Based on her sharp observations, since his attendant doesn't seem to be helping him get the love of his life she reckons she should push him in the right direction.

"Young Master Jiang." She saluted and gave a brief report, believing she owed it to the cultivator, "Big Sister JiaLi took the medicine and after checking her, she should be fine now but the rest is up to her own efforts."

"I understand. Maiden Yu has worked hard." Jiang FengMian smiled before eyeing the limpet on her sleeve, subconsciously wondering why Cangse Sanren seems to be tottering to hide behind her.

Not wanting the man to think that she of all people is trying to get in the way of his romance, Yu ZiYuan explained how she formed a sisterhood with the four ladies she called today.

"How enviable." was the gentle reply despite the complicated smile of the young lord.

Then marry her already if you feel so threatened, the young miss of Meishan Yu reprimanded in her mind.

"I would like to ask for assistance." She changed the topic in order to carry out her plan. Even a fool should be aware that the first step to bringing two people together is to get the thorns out of the way.

Are you going to need our Young Master, Madame? The tall, brown-eyed servant perked up at his Madam taking the initiative this time, wanting to forget all that he had to endure just for being too close their future mistress. Here he is, you can even forget about returning him!

"How can we help you, Maiden Yu?" Jiang FengMian instantly queried with an engaging expression.

Ah, Young Master, please try to calm down. Staying at least three steps away from a maiden is considered polite, why are you standing right beside the Madame? Wei Changze sniggered internally, regretting that he doesn't have any melon seeds to munch on at this wonderful development.

Yu ZiYuan earnestly continued on, her mind racing as she speaks, "Ah, if it's alright with you…"

Please, Madame, our Young Master is about ready to do anything for you! Why, if you ask him to give you the life of his favourite attendant, I'm afraid I'll have to start running for my life!
