Charlotte is going to Rivendell because she found out that her friend Thror has gotten sick with a sickness of the mind, and Charlotte wonders if Lord Elrond will be able to help her develop a new power that can heal this affliction. Charlotte wants to be able to help Thror or any member of his family that should ever be so afflicted.
When Charlotte arrives in Rivendell Lindir walks down the same set of stairs, and says.
"Greetings Charlotte of Lorien to what do we owe the pleasure of this visit?" Lindir
"I must speak with Lord Elrond urgently." Charlotte
"Lord Elrond is in his study follow me." Lindir
Charlotte follows Lindir to Lord Elrond's study, and as soon as she is announced she enters the study. Lord Elrond motions for Charlotte to take a seat, and says.
"Charlotte, Lindir says that you wish to speak to me about an urgent matter." Elrond
"Have you heard of Thror's sickness of the mind?" Charlotte
"I have. What do you wish to know about that tragedy?" Elrond
"Do you think that it can be cured by magic?" Charlotte
Lord Elrond sits back in his chair to seriously contemplate if there is a way to help his friend after all. Lord Elrond thinks of all the ancient skills of his people, and can unfortunately think of none that would be helpful in this situation. Lord Elrond sighs, and says.
"I can think of no skill among my people that can purge the dragon sickness from the mind of the King Under the Mountain." Elrond
Charlotte thinks very carefully about this, and says.
"Do you think that you and I together could develop a way to use the magic of the Sea Children to purge this affliction from any mind that is so afflicted?" Charlotte
Lord Elrond raises an eyebrow at this very intriguing idea, and says.
"No new magic skills have been created since the First Age, and if such a thing were to happen it could potentially be used by Elves as well as Sea Children though it would probably be easier for Sea Children to use due to their mastery of water. I will help you in this endeavour, and together we will accomplish this important task." Elrond
"Thank you Lord Elrond. When do we start?" Charlotte
"I was just finishing up some important paperwork before lunch. We can start as soon as lunch has finished." Elrond
"Good. I should probably refresh myself after my journey, and then I will be by the fountain until it is time to come for lunch." Charlotte
Lord Elrond nods, and dismisses Charlotte from his study.
After lunch Lord Elrond and Charlotte are in the healing hall, and standing in front of a bowl of water, and Lord Elrond instructs Charlotte saying.
"Focus your power on the water with the intent of restoring the health of the one who touches it, and allow the water to flow around your hands without touching them." Elrond
Charlotte does as instructed, and begins to see the results of her actions. Charlotte can tell that it is working, but she knows that she is still a long way off from her ultimate goal. As they are working on the new skill Lindir comes into the healing halls, and says.
"My Lord Cleo and some new arrivals from Earth are here; Do you think it would be acceptable for Charlotte to spend some time with her friends?" Lindir
Lord Elrond thinks about this, and comes to the conclusion that there is no harm in allowing Charlotte some time to spend with her friends. After Cleo and the others leave they will have to immediately get back to work if they wish to be successful. Lord Elrond nods to Lindir, turns to Charlotte, and says.
"Charlotte since we have made a lot of progress toward our goal I see no harm in allowing you some time to spend with your friends, but as soon as they leave to city we must return to our task immediately. Do you understand Charlotte?" Lord Elrond
"I understand Lord Elrond, and thank you so much." Charlotte
"You are welcome. Now go enjoy yourself." Lord Elrond
Charlotte leaves the healing halls to find her friends with a smile on her face.
As soon as Cleo, Erik, and Ondina leave the valley Charlotte gets back to working on a way to help her friend. She just hopes that she is able to complete her work before it is to late to save her friend. As they are working the newly forming power shifts from the body to the soul, and since the hour is late Lord Elrond calls an end to their session. Charlotte decides to take a nice relaxing swim in the Brúinen making sure to only swim in the river, and it's tributaries. After a long and peaceful swim Charlotte returns to Rivendell to enjoy a restful revelry. The next morning after breakfast Charlotte returns to the healing hall to continue her work under the careful tutelage of Lord Elrond. They are making progress every day, but the work is long and slow going. Charlotte's hope for finishing in time to help Thror is dwindling by the day, but at least Charlotte will be able to help the next Durin King that is so afflicted. Charlotte is careful not to let any despair enter her being so that her work will remain untainted. Charlotte has had to learn the hard lesson that no matter how hard you try it is not always possible to save someone even if that person is a dear friend to you.
At the same time Charlotte knows that the lives of Dwarves are long so there might still be hope yet for Thror, and Charlotte will continue to work diligently until she has completed her task. As she is working Charlotte thinks about what has happened recently. Charlotte has heard that some new Sea Children have been brought to Arda, and Charlotte is looking forward to getting to know them when she goes back to Númenor. As Charlotte is working Lindir comes into the healing hall to tell them that it is time for dinner, and Lord Elrond tells him that they will be there as quickly as possible. Even though Charlotte had no idea that it had gotten so late in the day. As they are walking to the dinning hall Lord Elrond says.
"You are very talented in the use of magic Charlotte. You are a credit to your people not just in your skill, but also in your compassion as well." Elrond
"Thank you Lord Elrond." Charlotte
"Have you considered what you are going to do after the work is done?" Elrond
"I think I will spend some time in the company of Dwarves to either heal Thror or help the Dwarves with what ever crisis is going on at the time." Charlotte
"Helping those in need is indeed a worthy pursuit, but you do need to spend some time with your friends and family as well." Elrond
"I will find a way to do both of them." Charlotte
"Yes I have no doubt that you will." Elrond
Charlotte and Lord Elrond continue on to the dining room in a comfortable silence.
Charlotte is getting really close to finishing her work when she hears disturbing rumours from Erebor, and Charlotte writes a letter to Thorin to learn something more substantial than mere rumour. Thorin tells Charlotte how badly his grandfather has deteriorated, and Charlotte tells him that she is really close to a cure. Charlotte also told him that it would take more time to create the skill if she wants it to work properly which she does. As the letters go back and forth the more grave the situation becomes, but also the closer the friendship gets between Thorin and Charlotte. Pretty soon they care about each other as if they were brother and sister, the work on the healing skill is getting harder and harder by the day. Then comes the day were the Dwarves of Erebor are driven from their home by the dragon Smaug. Charlotte hopes that the Dwarves will come to Imladris instead of Mirkwood seeking assistance. Thranduil is an isolationist who cares only for the Elves of Mirkwood. The world out side could be burning to the ground, and it wouldn't matter to Thranduil. Charlotte's tried to tell Thorin this, but he insists that the capricious King will honour their treaty.
Fortunately because of Charlotte's warning Thorin was able to convince his people to give the Elves one last chance to aid them. Thorin camps his people outside of the Hidden Valley, and goes into Rivendell to seek aid for his people. When he and his friends enter Rivendell Lindir comes down a set of stairs, and says.
"Welcome travellers. What may I assist you with?" Lindir
Thorin steps forward, and says.
"My people are homeless. We need as much food, supplies, and weapons that you can spare. Please help us." Thorin
"I can supply you with all the food, and supplies that you need, but you will need to talk to Lord Elrond about the weapons." Lindir
"Where is he I will ask him in person." Thorin
Before Lindir has a chance to respond Charlotte comes up to them, and says.
"It's alright Lindir since we are taking a break from working on the magic I will take Thorin to see Lord Elrond while you outfit the Dwarves with the supplies they requested." Charlotte
"Certainly Miss Charlotte. The rest of you follow me to the storeroom." Lindir
Dwalin takes one look at Charlotte, and leaves to follow Lindir while Thorin follows Charlotte to Lord Elrond's study.
Charlotte announces Thorin, and he goes into the room when he is admitted. Lord Elrond motions Thorin to take a seat, and says.
"Thorin son of Thrain what is it that you require that could not be handled by my aide?" Lord Elrond
"Your aide said that if we wished to acquire weapons with which to defend ourselves until we find a new home we had to talk to you." Thorin
"You may have the weapons you require as a gesture of goodwill from my people, and I believe that I may be able to help you find a home for your people as well." Elrond
Thorin's eyes go wide at the generosity of the elf before him, and he watches as the Elf Lord retrieves a map from the book case. After Lord Elrond has spread the map out on the desk they study it intensely, and after much debate and deliberation Lord Elrond marks out the location for the settlement as well as the best route to get there. Thorin thanks Lord Elrond for his help, and leaves the room with a better opinion of elves than he had before. As soon as all of the supplies and weaponry have been secured the Dwarves get ready to leave Rivendell, and Charlotte comes up to them saying.
"Did you get everything you needed?" Charlotte
"Everything and then some, but are you sure that you don't want to come with us?" Thorin
"I am so close to finishing my work so perhaps another time would be best." Charlotte
"How is the project coming along?" Thorin
"I should be finished by the time you make it to the new settlement." Charlotte
Thorin nods with a smile, and guides his group out of the Hidden Valley.
Charlotte returns to work with renewed vigour after the departure of the Dwarves from the valley. The work continues for many seasons until finally they have finished it, but by the time they are done Thror was killed in the Battle for Moria. Charlotte writes Thorin to tell him of her success, but is devastated to learn of the death of Thror. Charlotte tells him that she is greatly saddened by his death, but her time on land has ended for awhile, and she will visit them in six months. With that Charlotte leaves the city, and dives into the Brúinen to return to the sea.
When Charlotte gets to Númenor she is surprised to find Rikki swimming around the city enjoying the warm water and beautiful sights. Rikki looks at her, and says.
Charlotte! It's about time you got here. - Rikki
I could say the same thing about you, but it is so good to finally see you again my friend. - Charlotte
Where were you? You weren't here when I got here. I was worried that something might have happened. - Rikki
I was in Rivendell working on developing a new way to use our magic with Lord Elrond. - Charlotte
Charlotte are you sure that it's a good idea to be doing that kind of thing with Land people?- Rikki
As long as they are either Elves or Dwarves it's fine. - Charlotte
If you say so, but it will take me some time to get used to the idea that we don't have to hide anymore. - Rikki
Charlotte smiles at Rikki, and the two friends spend some time swimming around the city before going to the lounge hall to chat with their friends.
About two months into Charlotte's time in Númenor Rikki and Zane get married, and the next morning Rikki moves into the house with Zane instead of living on the reef like she has been. They spent the next several months getting used to each other in the context of living together. One month before Charlotte is to return to land Rikki and Zane go to Emma's clinic to discuss how to go about starting a family. When Emma tells them all that she knows they return home to fulfill their desire. As soon as she is ready Rikki goes to the nesting grounds to lay her eggs. When Rikki's hatch-lings are half grown Charlotte returns to land swimming up the river that flows into the blue mountains. When Charlotte arrives at Ered Luin the guard says.
"Halt state your business in these lands." guard
"I have come to visit the settlement of my friend Thorin Oakenshield." Charlotte
The guard recognizes her as Charlotte Dwarrow-Friend, and says.
"Open the gate." guard
Charlotte walks through the gate, and is greeted with the familiar sights and sounds of the Dwarrow.
Thorin walks into the tavern, and finds Miss Charlotte singing, laughing, and drinking with his people. In Thorin's mind Miss Charlotte truly is an exceptional elf who has done so much for his people without asking for anything in return. Thorin knows that were it not for Charlotte Thorin would hate elves instead of just strongly disliking them as he does now. Thorin joins in the festivities happening in the tavern glad that things are going so well for his people. Miss Charlotte's friendship is the only good thing Thorin has ever gotten from the elves without having to ask for it, and he sometimes wonders how this will change their respective futures.
Charlotte is glad to be among Dwarves once more, and she will treasure these times in her heart as the fondest of memories. Charlotte knows that she will have to go back to Lothlorien at some point, but she will wait until she has had a proper visit before doing that. The Dwarves have been nothing, but kind and courteous to her so far. The Dwarrow are a very honourable people, and Charlotte is proud to count them as her friends. Charlotte's very grateful to Ulmo for the life that he has given her, and she would never change anything that has happened even if she could. Even as she is enjoying her time with the Dwarves Charlotte thinks of how much she loves the sea, but she cannot forget the love she has for her people. Charlotte's visit with the Dwarves comes to an end, and she goes home to spend some time with her family and friend back home. When Charlotte gets back to Lothlorien her loved ones are a little bit angry at her, but the anger disappears when she tells them what she has been doing. Charlotte's life goes back to normal, but Charlotte will never forget the friends that she has made outside of her homeland.
Haldir is having to accept that his daughter is grown, and may occasionally want to see the world outside of their woodland home, and he has to be a good father letting her pursue whatever experiences that she so desires. Haldir still remembers when Charlotte was a child, and needed a home Haldir was happy to provide it. The only consolation that Haldir has is that he will always be her father, and he will always be there for her when ever she needs it. Haldir hopes that he trained Charlotte well enough so that she can protect herself when he isn't there to watch her back. Haldir watches his daughter's merry mischief as she spends her time with her dear friend, and his mind drifts back wistfully back to times long gone wondering where all the happy years have gone. Even though Charlotte is still young she has independent desires that draw her away from her family. Haldir knew that this was going to happen, but he wishes that the time would not have flown away quite so fast as it did. Elves are supposed to have thousands of years to live and work together, but Haldir has had the misfortune to only have a handful of centuries before Charlotte has gone out into the world, The time
