One day, Dolores was randomly standing outside for no reason.
"Hey, guess what I can hear!" she said. "It's the sound of Bruno crying out in pain! He fell down the stairs and can't move. Somebody should tell his mommy!"
"Tìo Bruno, why are you lying on the ground?" Mirabel asked.
"Uh… no reason," Bruno said.
"Well, you're blocking the way," said Mirabel. "Can you move, please?"
"Umm… no," said Bruno.
"WHAT?!" Mirabel raged. "WHY NOT?!"
Then, she saw Bruno's pained expression and softened her tone.
"Did you trip and fall and hurt yourself?"
"No…" Bruno said.
"Okay, then," Mirabel said, getting angry again. "MOVE!"
Bruno tried to get up, but he couldn't. "Ow, ow, ow!" he said. "I must have broken something…"
"Yeah, I didn't even know legs could bend at that angle…" Mirabel said, stepping around him.
"Where are you going?" Bruno asked.
"I'm gonna get help!" Mirabel said.
"No! Please don't tell anyone!" Bruno begged.
"What?" Mirabel said, calming down again. "Why not?"
"I don't want anyone to worry about me…" Bruno said.
"I'm telling everyone!" Mirabel said, grinning. She ran outside and bumped into Luisa, who had been wandering aimlessly.
"Hey, sis," said Luisa. "How's your day been?"
"Great!" said Mirabel. " Tìo Bruno fell down the stairs and broke his leg, and now he can't move."
"Oh. Okay," said Luisa.
Suddenly, Pepa appeared out of nowhere.
"What did you say about Bruno?" she asked.
"He fell down the stairs and broke his leg, and now he can't move." Mirabel said.
"And what exactly do you want me to do about that?" Luisa asked. "Pick him up and carry him?"
"Can you?" Mirabel asked.
"I don't want to, but I probably could…" Luisa said.
"There's no need for that! I saw him walking around, just earlier," said Pepa.
"Oh, really?" Mirabel said.
She ran back inside the house to go check.
Bruno was still lying on the ground.
"Oh," he said. "You're back."
"I've told almost everyone," Mirabel said. "I just need to find…"
Suddenly, she spotted her parents and ran up to them.
"Tìo Bruno fell down the stairs and broke his leg, and now he can't move!" she said excitedly.
There was an awkward silence.
"I'm serious," she said.
After a few more seconds of silence, both parents scurried off in opposite directions.
"Well, that was weird," Mirabel said.
Later that day, she watched lovingly as Julieta forced food into Bruno's mouth.
"Aw…" Mirabel said. "We're one big happy family!"
"I still can't believe that I had to pick him up…" Luisa grumbled.
"Why is it such a big deal?" Mirabel asked. "You can lift, like, a dozen donkeys!"
"The donkeys don't smell nearly as bad," Luisa said.
"She has a point; you are starting to stink," Julieta told Bruno. "You should take a shower soon."
"And use lots of shampoo! Your hair looks like a rat's nest!" Luisa said.
"That's because it is a rat's nest," Bruno said.
"EW!" said Dolores, who was still standing outside. "That's it. I'm done listening to them for now."
That evening, dinner was finished cooking for some reason.
"Dinner is finished cooking," Alma said when the dinner was finished cooking. "Mirabel, can you set the table?"
"Okay, Abuela!" Mirabel said. Then, she tripped and fell and broke all of the plates.
"MIRABEL! What have you done?" Alma shrieked. "You always ruin everything!"
"Oh, no! I'm so sorry, Abuela!" Mirabel cried, as Bruno entered the room.
Bruno was barefoot for some reason, and his feet were very sweaty.
Slap! Slap! Slap!
His sweaty feet slapped the floor as he walked.
"Bruno! Look out!" Mirabel called out to him. But it was too late. He had already stepped on a shard of glass, which embedded itself deeply into the sole of his foot.
"Ow, ow, ow!" Bruno said.
"Look what you've done, Mirabel!" Alma scolded. "This is all your fault!"
"I'm s-s-sorry!" Mirabel cried harder.
"He got hurt, because you didn't call him Tío," Alma said.
"I think I'm bleeding…" Bruno said.
Mirabel ran away, crying.
"Wait! Come back!" Bruno said, limping after her. What an idiot.
Later still that evening, giggling could be heard from Bruno's room.
He was allowing the rats to climb all over him and lick his feet.
"Knock, Knock!" said Julieta, as she knocked on his door.
"Who's there?" Bruno asked.
"Your sister."
"My sister who?"
"Your sister, Julieta!"
That's… not how knock knock jokes work.
"Oh. heeeey! Whaaaat's uuup?" Bruno asked, trying to act casual.
"I just wanted to make sure you were okay," Julieta said. "You didn't have dinner with us."
"Yeah, I'm fine," said Bruno. "Go awa…AAAAHHH…ay!"
"Am I interrupting your vision again?" Julieta asked.
"No!" Bruno said. "I'm… uhh…. naked!"
"Oh," said Julieta, "Okay."
The next day, Agustín had long hair for some reason.
"Why is your hair so long?" Julieta asked.
"Why are you wearing glasses?" Agustín shot back.
"Uh…um… never mind that!" Julieta said. "You need a haircut!"
"I don't want to cut my hair!" Agustín said. "It's so long, soft, and beautiful!"
"Long hair isn't very manly, though!" Julieta said.
"I'll cut my hair when you take off those glasses!" Agustín said, baring his teeth.
They began arguing loudly, unaware that Luisa was listening.
"…and then you told Pepa that she was too pale!" Agustín said, even though Julieta had never done such a thing.
"Luisa, are you okay?" Dolores asked her cousin. "I heard tears trying to escape your eyes."
Luisa grabbed Dolores and sobbed.
"Too tight… I can't breathe…" Dolores groaned.
Bruno was still limping later that day.
Mirabel ran up and gave him a big hug… even though he was a creepy, stinky, old man!
Disgusting!
"I'm sorry!" she cried. "Please forgive me!"
"Don't worry; it's fine!" Bruno said. "I had the rats lick my wound."
"No, no, no!" Mirabel said. "I'm sorry that I didn't call you Tío!"
"Well…. I… actually…" Bruno said, but stopped when he saw Agustín carrying a suitcase.
"Ooh! Are you going on vacation, Pap?" Mirabel asked. "Can I come?"
"No!" Agustín said. "I'm moving back in with my parents!"
"What? Why?" Mirabel asked.
"Because! Nobody around here appreciates my long, beautiful hair!" Agustín snarled.
"I like it," Bruno said meekly.
"Well, my wife doesn't!" Agustín said. "She says that my long hair isn't manly…"
"I have long hair. Am… am I not manly?" Bruno asked.
"Let go of my daughter," Agustín grumbled, pushing past Bruno.
Thud! Tumble! Crash!
Agustín tripped and fell down the stairs! Yay!
"Oh, no! Are you alright?" Bruno said, as if it was at all logical to have concern for the man who was just being mean to him.
"Ow! Ow! Ow!" Agustín said.
"Julieta! Your husband went and hurt himself!" Bruno tattled.
"No! No! Shhhh!" Agustín said.
"Agustín! What happened?" Julieta asked, rushing into the room with a slice of bread.
"I fell down the stairs…" Agustín groaned.
"I remember when I fell down the stairs," Bruno said.
"That's because you were wearing a bucket over your head like an idiot," Julieta said.
"Oh, okay," Bruno said. "I remember being born."
"I can't move. I think my leg is broken…" Agustín said.
"Ah, I see!" Julieta said, eating the bread.
"It hurts so badly," Agustín said. "I think this is the most pain I've ever felt in my life."
Julieta reached into her apron pocket and pulled out a pair of scissors.
"What are you doing?" Agustín asked. "Why do you have scissors?"
Julieta started cutting his hair.
"No, no, no!" he screamed. "NO!"
