Chapter 4: Fighting Capabilities
/hello, and welcome to the first chapter of this story to actually include real combat.
This will be taking place on the second day of Beacon, a day skipped by the show.
This won't be the first time that I write a chapter on an event that wasn't an actual episode.
K, enjoy.\
It was the second day of Beacon, teams RWBY and CRNN were walking to their first class for the day: combat class.
Team CRNN learned that Ruby and Weiss are now on better terms with each other, so no more problems will arise between them.
The two teams walk into the room, and quickly take seats near the back of the room, sitting next to each other.
After a few minutes, every other student in the class was present and accounted for.
Goodwitch, who was the teacher of the class, spoke up. "Welcome, students, to combat class. In this class, you will be sparring against each other, either through a system that will pick two students randomly, or by request. Any questions?"
Hearing no responses, Goodwitch continues. "Good, now we'll be using the system to pick our first 2 contestants."
On the big screen above the small circular arena, two boxes were swiftly scrolling through images of all the students present, until finally landing on two.
Goodwitch looked at the result. "Cardin Winchester, and Colton Lux Tenebris. Please go get your equipment, and change into your combat gear."
Colton gets up. "Wish me luck." He says to his friends before walking to the locker rooms.
Colton was now in his combat gear, consisting of his grey shirt and blue jeans, with chainmail under the shirt, as well as his belt with his back up weapons, and Dust pouch attached.
/Author's note: the bag is actually magic, made before he put on the inhibitor rings. It can fit almost anything, like a mini tardis, but not infinite.\
Goodwitch started to explain the rules. " the rules are simple. To win, you must either force your opponent out of the arena, or your opponent's aura reaches 15% or lower. Now begin!"
Colton stared down his opponent while summoning his main weapons. He reaches into his pouch and grabs a fire Dust crystal and an ice Dust crystal, he wanted to start things off with a surprise.
Cardin didn't look worried, in fact he was looking at Colton as a predator to prey.
Colton absorbs the Dust into his weapons to get ready, storing the attacks.
Cardin charges, swinging wildly trying to hit Colton.
Colton expertly dodges Cardin's attempts to hit him.
"Stay still so I can win!" Cardin shouts.
"How about no." Colton retorts, while doing a backflip to get a good distance away, landing perfectly.
This gets Cardin mad as he responds. "You little- I'll squash you into a million pieces!"
Cardin charges again, trying to close in the gap that Colton made when dodging Cardin's last attempt.
Colton simply held up his weapons, and shouted. "Water!"
From his keyblades, a stream of pressured water shot forth hitting Cardin and sending him back a few feet and damaging his aura.
From the crowd, team RWBY and the rest of team CRNN were commenting on the match.
"I've never seen Dust be used like that, combining fire and ice to create water. I've got to try that sometime." Weiss comments.
"He sure seems creative." Blake adds.
Back to the fight, Colton dismisses Oathkeeper and pulls out a lightning Dust crystal.
Colton touches it to Oblivion, absorbing it.
"Lightning!" Colton shouts. From the keyblade, lightning shot out from the tip, heading straight for Cardin.
The lightning struck true, and did more damage as Cardin was still wet from the water attack, lowering his aura to 60%.
"That's smart, using the water attack first to increase the damage of the lightning." Ren says, focused on the match.
Colton then dismisses Oblivion, and pulls out Mistsplitter.
This left the crowd and his opponent confused, as that weapon was usually saved for when aura was not around.
"Prepare to be amazed, it's time for me to end this with style." Colton quipped.
"As if you could do anything worthwhile to even hurt me!" Cardin says full of himself.
Colton sinks into the floor as a shadow, confusing Ren, and the RWY of team RWBY, as they have seen him become a shadow on the ground before, and it seemed like it was for stealth and maneuvering around small spaces.
Colton then did what no one suspected, the shadow he became spread across the entire arena, making sure to not go out of bounds.
This surprised everyone, including Goodwitch, who had never seen him do this before, no one else had seen him do this before either.
Rising out of the pool of shadow, was several Coltons made from shadows.
These duplicates were exact replicas of Colton's dark/shadow form, where he's covered in darkness, making him look like a living silhouette.
"Well, well, well. Which ones the real me?" All of the replicas said at the same time.
The replicas gave Cardin no time, as the all brandished their shadowy Mistsplitters and attacked Cardin from all angles.
One clone slashes at him from the front, Cardin brings up his mace to block the attack. Suddenly, the clone jumps back, canceling its attack, then from behind Cardin, another clone slashes at him, hitting his exposed back. The other clones attack led from Cardin's blind spots, chipping away at his aura with weak yet fast attacks.
From the assault, Cardin's aura was down to 30% getting low.
Suddenly, all of the clones sink back into the floor as the darkness recedes and Colton emerges from the ground. "Had enough?"
Cardin glares at him before, in a fit of rage, charges as much aura a he can into a large aura wave.
He launches the wave at Colton who simply holds Mistsplitter out to intercept the attack.
Instead of being knocked back, the sword clashed with the wave for a second before absorbing it.
All of the students were shocked, as Mistsplitter glowed a little.
"Checkmate." Colton says before swinging Mistsplitter down in a diagonal motion.
The sword released the absorbed aura in the form of a slash wave. Thanks to Mistsplitter's special properties, it can absorb energy and aura, although it can only absorb aura when it is being used as energy, like an aura wave for example.
The crowd could tell that the re-released aura was stronger. The slash hit Cardin right in the chest, destroying the rest of his aura.
"Mr Lux Tenebris is the winner by aura depletion." Goodwitch calls out.
Colton puts away Mistsplitter before walking away.
Cardin, full of rage for not getting a hit in and getting beaten so easily, was not going to let this go. Carding gets up, grabs his mace, and charges.
Before anyone could do anything, when Cardin got close and swung down, Colton dodged the mace, elbowed Cardin hard in the stomach, then proceeded to hit him with a precise punch to the jaw, and a strong ti kick to the side.
Cardin was knocked straight on his back. Colton Simply walks over to the seats.
'Didn't even supply me a real challenge' Colton thought to himself.
When he got over to where his friends were sitting, they immediately went into conversation with him.
"That was amazing!" Ruby and Nora said at the same time.
"Your usage of Dust is brilliant, you'll have to teach me how you do it." Weiss calmly states.
Colton just nodded his head. "Well, I'm glad that I was able to impress you guys."
'That last attack... it was like Adam. I need to test this myself.' Blake thought without changing the expression on her face.
A while later most of the students have gone already, leaving enough time for one more match.
Blake, who hasn't gone yet, raised her hand. "Professor Goodwitch! I'd like to challenge Colton to a match."
Goodwitch looks at her, then looks at Colton.
"I'm down with it. I haven't lost any aura yet anyway, so I'm in fighting condition." Colton says calmly.
"Very well, both fighters get ready."
A few minutes later, Blake walked back into the room, in her combat outfit. The two shadow/darkness related semblance users walked onto the arena.
"Begin." Goodwitch commands.
Wasting no time, Blake starts shooting a volley of bullets at Colton. 'If he's anything like Adam, he'll block the bullets with that energy absorbing sword.' Colton explained how Mistsplitter worked after his first match, it was similar to Wilt and Blush.
In response to the barrage of bullets, Colton did the opposite of what Blake was expecting. He summoned Oathkeeper and swung it to create a small barrier of light. Once the bullets hit, the barrier disappeared.
Colton dismisses Oathkeeper, and reaches for his gun: BorrelSword.
He fired off a few rounds of his own, causing Blake to dodge with her semblance.
Colton then pressed a small switch on the gun, causing it to Mechashift into its sword form.
The sword form of BorrelSword, is when the butt of the gun, or the place where the clip goes, shifts and lines up with the rest of the weapon, creating a straight line if you were to run your finger across the side of the gun. Then the blade at the end of the gun extends out to form a katana.
Colton holds the weapon in his left hand, pointer finger on a sensor that can tell when the user wants to fire a bullet while in sword form, without firing a shot randomly, this is thanks to some sort of nerve sensing technology that senses the nerves in the brain, okay not really, it's a little bit of magic, the technology part is just a cover up.
Colton then pulls out Mistsplitter and gets into his usual dual-wielding stance: both swords pointing forward, and close to the body.
Colton then charges at Blake, swinging his weapons in and X like fashion.
Blake skillfully dodges, and goes for a slash of her own.
Colton wasn't able to react on time, getting hit.
The crowd was shocked, he was actually hit.
Smiling Colton says to Blake. "Looks like your not one to underestimate, I'll have to start getting serious."
Colton jumps back and fires some shots from his gun-blade. He lands a few feet away from where he once stood.
"You've seen me use light, and use darkness. But you haven't seen what happens when I use both halves of my semblance at the same time."
Colton closes his eyes to focus, seeing this Blake charges forward, intent on interrupting what ever he was doing.
She almost reaches him, readying a slash to the chest, when she got close enough she swung.
Unfortunately for Blake, a small shockwave was released from Colton, sending her sliding back.
Colton was now all grey, it was a mix between his light form, and his dark form, this is his twilight form.
Colton slashes with BorrelSword, sending out a wave of darkness, he the slashes with Mistsplitter, sending out a wave of light.
As he sent out the waves, he charges forward at a speed that could match Ruby's, he got behind Blake, using another X slash, this time hitting her as she didn't expect it.
Blake was hit forward a few feet, and had to use her semblance to dodge the wave attacks.
She then turns towards him, and closes the distance.
The two then engage in a sword clash, exchanging blows and getting some hits in, neither of them were relenting.
When it seemed like one of them was going to get the upper hand, Goodwitch called the match. "Alright that's enough!"
Both students stop, changing their mechashift weapons back into their smaller forms, and put them away, with Colton also putting Mistsplitter back in its sheath.
Goodwitch speaks up again. "You both did well, however, this match ends in a draw, as you both have timed out."
Colton turns to Blake, holding out his fist, intending for a fist bump. "Great match. Let's spar again sometime."
Blake returns it, with a smile. 'Looks like I was wrong, he's nothing like Adam. I can trust him as a true friend.' "Yes, that would be nice. I'm looking forward to the next one."
The two friends make their way over to their teams.
Once reaching them, Ren spoke up. "The two of you seem evenly matched, it was impossible to tell who'd win, but I guess we'll never know since it ended in a tie."
"Well I guess we both have enough experience in a fight. It was tough, I had to use my semblance a lot more than usual." Blake replied.
"I had to actually use both parts of my semblance, no one else had forced me to do that before. You definitely have skill, I can respect that. Although, next time we spar, I'll win." Colton said the last part with a smirk.
"We'll see about that, but just so you know, I'm the one who will win." Blake said with a tone that suggested it was all in good fun.
The 8 friends share a laugh, before heading out of the classroom.
/there we have it, the showing of our half light half dark protagonist's fighting capabilities.
Just to let you know: Blake saw how similar Mistsplitter worked to Adam Taurus' Wilt and Blush, so she thought that maybe our hero trained under him somehow, and that is why he got so close to her, so he can report to Adam about her.
But that wasn't the case. The weapons may be similar, but their users are not as such.
Anyway thanks for reading.\
