A Mutual Surprise

Day Two of Fluffbuary is here and with it comes a little Charans fluff fic for my awesome friend Stallionwolf. The prompt I chose for today was "chocolate."

This is set about three years after the barrier broke in Hopes, Dreams, And DETERMINATION, but can be read as a standalone fic, just know that Chara and Sans were friends for years before Chara died, and slowly had started falling in love. Chara was revived near the end of Hopes, Dreams, and DETERMINATION and she and Sans rekindled their friendship and confessed their feelings for one another.

...

"So that will be a Grillby's Double Deluxe burger, a single Deluxe Burger, an order of fries, an order of onion rings, one chocolate peanut butter shake, a peanut butter shake, and a bottle of ketchup?" Grillby asked to confirm Chara's order.

Chara nodded. "Correct."

"That'll be $13.30." Grillby told her, and Chara handed him the requested amount. Grillby went to get their order and Chara stifled a yawn while she waited.

"There you go, Chara." Grillby said with a smile a few minutes later, handing over a large bag and the two shakes. "You know, you two haven't been in for a while. We've missed you guys."

"We know. We've been so busy." Chara sighed. "I've got college and Sans has had to deal with a lot of overtime lately at the lab. With that new research they've been doing on healing magic, they've wanted him there almost constantly. This is the first day off Sans has had in almost two weeks. He's been super exhausted lately. I thought getting him all his favorite foods might help a bit. Cheer him up."

"That's sweet of you." Grillby told him. "Let him know we're thinking of him."

Chara thanked him and headed out, hurrying down the streets to her and Sans's shared apartment, hoping her surprise would indeed cheer him up. The poor guy hadn't even wanted to get out of bed this morning, and had only woken briefly to kiss her goodbye as she headed off for class. She had thought about cutting class to spend the day with him, but exams were coming soon and she was already struggling in physics. She didn't need to add failing to all the stress that was going on.

She quickly entered the building and took the elevator up to their floor, hurrying to their room and juggling the food and shakes so she could unlock the door. "Sans, I'm home!" she called as she stepped inside.

Her eyes widened at what she saw.

...

The lights were off, but candles lit the room, resting on the coffee table and bookshelves, giving the room a romantic glow. Tiny chocolates rested in a dish on the coffee table, and there was a trail of rose petals leading to the kitchen.

Surprised but also smiling now, Chara followed the trail, and found Sans in the kitchen, sitting on a chair in front of the table, which was also lit by candles. And like her, he had decided to get dinner ready, and it was a much more romantic dinner than hers was. There were bowls of her favorite beef stir fry and steamed white rice, and a gorgeous triple layer chocolate cake rested on the counter.

Sans and Chara looked to each other, and then to the food they had intended to surprise each other with.

And they both burst out laughing.

"Looks like great minds think alike." Sans grinned.

Chara grinned back. "Well, yours thought even better. I just got you junk food."

"Well, it's my favorite junk food." Sans said with a grin. He took the bag and the shakes from her and set them down before pulling her into his arms and kissing her. "I wanted to surprise you. I know I haven't been very romantic lately, or home very much."

"It's not your fault. You've been busy." Chara reassured him.

"I know, but I still wanted to do something nice for you. You deserve it, plus, I know you've been stressed lately too with exams coming up. I thought this would cheer you up."

"Well, it definitely did. You know stir fry and chocolate cake are my favorite things in the world...well, besides you, that is. You know you'll always be number one." Chara told him, smiling as she cuddled into his embrace. "I wish I could have thought of something just as good for you though. Grillby's is nothing compared to all this." She gestured at Sans's romantic surprise.

"Hey, it's not "nothing." Sans told her firmly. "It means a lot. You know Grillby's is my favorite when I'm having a hard day, and you always know how to cheer me up. You're amazing, Chara, and I wanted to make sure you knew that too. And trust me, Grillby's grub will NEVER go to waste. Those burgers will make a perfect lunch, and what goes better with stir fry than fries and onion rings? Not to mention, we can freeze the shakes and scoop them out like ice cream to go with the cake. Our surprises work perfectly together."

"Just like we do." Chara said, kissing him on the cheek. "Now let's get started on this awesome meal you made, and then I have an even better surprise for you after dinner that I may or may not have picked up at Victoria's Secret."

Sans grinned even wider. "Can't wait."

Hope you guys enjoyed! Please review and let me know what you think!
