Voight had finally let the intelligence unit have a day off. The past couple months had been full of hard and heavy cases not giving the team a break.
Hailey didn't know how she was going to spend her day, she had woken up around five and couldn't get back to sleep. She picked up the book she had on her nightstand and opened it up to the page she had stopped on the night before. She managed to finish the book by about six. Fortunately for her even with a day off Jay would still be up at six am sharp.
She shot him a quick text around six fifteen, while she was waiting for her toast to be done, asking if he was awake. Her phone pinged seconds later and she smiled now knowing that he was awake.
Just like every other day, Jay's internal clock had woken him up at six am on the dot. He was glad he had a day off, but he knew once he was awake there was no going back to sleep till later that night.
It was very rare that they got a whole day off to themselves. He made his way to his kitchen grabbing everything he needed to make cereal, wondering what he was going to do with all the free time. He wasn't really one to sit and binge a show by himself, he would usually do that with Hailey. He thought about calling her but didn't just in case she was still asleep.
He smiled to himself at the thought of his partner, wondering, hoping that she was awake. And it was as if she had read his mind, his phone beeped, and her name lit up his screen. He picked up his phone replying to her, letting her know he was awake.
H: you awake?
J: awake and already bored
H: same, I've been up since 5 and already finished one book
J: I mean I've only been awake about 20 minutes
H: and you're already complaining?
J: it just feels weird not having to get up and get ready straight away
H: you still going on your morning run?
J: of course, you wanna join?
H: I'd love to, I'll be at your place in about 20 minutes
J: C an't wait, see you soon
Hailey changed into a workout outfit, deciding that showering after the run would be the better idea. Staying true to her word she pulled up outside Jay's apartment building exactly twenty minutes later, to find him sitting on the front steps waiting for her.
She jumped out of her car and made her way over to him. He stood up and made his way down the steps as she came over. And he may or may not have noticed her secretly (well trying to do it secretly) check him out.
He didn't say anything though because he had done the exact same thing to her, and she may or may not have noticed as well.
"Good morning" he smiled as he reached the bottom of the steps.
"Morning"
"You ready?"
"Yeah, just one thing, is it okay if I use your shower when we're done because I really don't feel like driving all the way back home all sweaty"
"No" he deadpanned before breaking into a smile "of course you can"
She stuck her tongue out at him and he laughed "your real mean sometimes Jay Halstead you know that?"
"I'll make you coffee when we get back to make up for it"
"It better be good"
"I make the best coffee"
"Oh, do you now?"
"I most definitely do, and I will prove it to you later but now it's time to run"
"Let's go then"
Around an hour or so later the partners found themselves back outside Jays apartment building sweaty and ready for some coffee.
Hailey quickly grabbed the bag she had brought with her, that had a change of clothes and everything she needed to shower with, from her car.
Though they did spend quite a lot of time together outside of work, they rarely found themselves at each other's homes. Most of their time would be spent in a bar, having drinks, doing their thing.
Jay let them into his apartment, unlocking the door letting Hailey go in first, him following behind. Even though it was one of the few times she had been in his apartment Hailey felt comfortable, at home, in his space.
She kicked her shoes off and into the space by the door where Jay usually leaves his shoes and made her way to his couch, dropping her bag on the floor and flopping down on it letting out a groan.
Jay laughed at the scene in front of him "you tired?"
"What gave it away?" She returned.
He shook his head and smiled, Hailey being Hailey, he loved that she was more relaxed around him when it was just them, that she let down some of the walls she had built up when she was around him.
"You wanna shower first?"
"You can, I'm quite comfortable here"
"I won't be long, if you want anything, coffee, food whatever, help yourself"
She nodded "I don't think I'm moving for at least another half hour; your couch is actually really comfy"
He laughed at her words "well don't have too much fun without me" and with that he was off down the hall and into the shower.
After about twenty minutes Hailey heard the slight creek of the tap and the water stopped. Around five minutes later she heard footsteps coming down the hall and there was Jay. She felt the heat rush to her cheeks when she saw him, with nothing on but sweatpants hanging dangerously low around his waist, leaving little to the imagination, hair damp and slightly curly.
"Showers free, there's fresh towels in there for you and you can change in my bedroom when you're done" he said like he wasn't standing there half naked.
"Uh yeah, Um, thanks" she fumbled over her words, feeling her face get redder.
"You want coffee?" He asked walking through to the kitchen; she could swear she saw a smirk cross his face.
"Y-yeah that'll be nice" she said while sitting up.
"I'll have it ready for you when you're out"
"Thank you" she smiled and then grabbed her bag and rushed off to his bedroom to sort out her things.
Once she was done with her shower, Hailey made her way back into Jays room and got changed into some leggings and a T-shirt. Drying her hair with the towel, leaving it still slightly damp and she went back down the hall where she heard the coffee maker running.
"Coffee is almost ready" he told her, now fully dressed.
"Thank god, I'm in desperate need of some" she smiled "Uh where do I put the wet towels?" she asked, holding them up to him as she had brought them back out with her not wanting to leave them on his floor.
"You can just hang them back over the rail in the bathroom"
She nodded and went back to do what he said. By the time she was back there was a mug of steaming hot coffee sitting on the kitchen counter for her.
Jay was leaning against the fridge, mug in his hand, opposite from the counter that had Haileys coffee on. She pulled herself up onto the counter, sitting with her legs crossed and picked up the mug carefully and sipped. Jay smiled at her antics, shaking his head slightly, the woman never sat properly on anything.
"My favourite" she smiled after tasting it and realising he had bought her favourite coffee pods.
"I know" he sent her a soft smile; she could see a slight redness flushing his cheeks.
"Thank you" she felt a blush cover her face too and she brought her mug to her mouth again to try and hide it. But in her half-flustered state, still thinking about the fact that he went out of his way to buy her favourite coffee pods even when he hates them, made her accidentally miss her mouth and spill some of her coffee down her front.
"Shit!" She quickly placed her coffee mug down on the counter and hopped off it. Jay grabbed a packet of napkins from the cupboard and opened them and taking some out before handing it to her and wiping up the spilt coffee on the countertop.
"I would've done that" Hailey told him while trying to dab her T-shirt dry.
"It's okay. Are you okay? Are you burnt?"
"I'm fine. A little embarrassed but completely fine, no injuries"
"I'll go see if I can find something that you can wear" he told her while dumping the dirty napkins into the trash can.
"Oh, you don't need to do that"
"You're covered in coffee, I'm not just gonna let you stay like that"
"It's fine, seriously Jay, you don't..." she trailed off as he had already made his way down the hallway and into the bedroom. She sighed, still slightly embarrassed she followed after him.
She was met with Jay searching through his drawers. Standing in the doorway, she watched as he moved from one drawer to the next.
"Jay you really don't need to find me anything"
"I do and I'm going-, ah here it is" he pulled out a old hoodie and held it up to Hailey, who noticed the police academy logo on the front.
"This is probably the only thing I own that won't swallow you whole" he laughed while placing the hoodie into her hands "okay well it probably will still swallow you whole but it's the smallest thing I have" he told her before walking back down the hallway and into the kitchen, giving her some privacy to change.
Shutting the bedroom door behind her and she took off the coffee-soaked T-shirt. Looking down at the hoodie he had given her she noticed his name written across the back in bold letters.
HALSTEAD
She pulled the hoodie on, taking in the scent, his scent. She loved the way he smelled. She felt the heat rise in her cheeks at her thoughts and quickly shook it off. He's her partner, she can't think about him like that.
Going back out to where Jay was, soaked T-shirt in hand, she noticed him wiping down the countertop.
"I would've done that"
His head shot up at the sound of her voice "it's all good Hails" he told her as he put away the cloth he was using to dry the counter.
"I'm sorry" she said her voice small, biting the inside of her cheek and avoiding eye contact, worried that she would've upset him after spilling the coffee everywhere.
"Hailey, hey, look at me, it was an accident, it's all good, okay?" His voice was soft. She lifted up her head, her eyes met his and he gave her a soft smile.
"Okay" she said returning the smile, but only half-heartedly, she was still kind of worried that she might have upset him.
"There's a laundry basket in my bedroom, go out that in there and I'll wash it for you" he said gesturing to the T-shirt in her hand.
"Oh no you don't have to-"
"I want to and I'm going to" he said taking the T-shirt out of her hand and making a quick trip to his bedroom and back.
"You seriously don't have to do that" she said when he returned.
"But I want to and I'm going to" he repeated.
"I'm not going to win this am I?"
"Absolutely not"
She rolled her eyes at him and he laughed and then her remembered she was wearing his hoodie, which was extremely oversized on her still, even if it was the smallest thing he owned.
"It suits you by the way, the hoodie" he told her, and she felt her face heat up.
"Oh, uh thanks"
"You're welcome" he said, and she could swear she saw him smirk again "so I was thinking about going to the range today, do you wanna come?" He continued like he didn't just make her all flustered.
"Yeah sure, but you've gotta let me use your sniper rifle"
"If I let you use my rifle, what do I get in return? Because you can't just use it, it's sacred" he joked which resulted in another eye roll from the blonde standing opposite him.
"You get the pleasure of spending time with me" she shot back, slightly smirking
"Yeah, you see, I'm gonna have to pass"
"Ouch, that hurts" Hailey said wiping fake tears from her eyes and Jay laughed.
"You wanna go now? Or in a bit?"
"Now?" Hailey asked excitedly, they had only been to the range together a handful of times, but it always made Haileys day better, she enjoyed spending her time with him, especially doing something they both loved and enjoyed.
Jay nodded "you're adorable when you're excited, you know that"
"Shut up" She mumbled, her cheeks heating up once again at his words.
"You drive or me?"
"You can" she told him, and the pair made their way down to his truck.
The journey to the range didn't take long. The second Jay was parked, Hailey hopped out of the truck and grabbed Jay's rifle from the back seat of his truck before he could get to it.
"Someone's eager" he locking the truck as she walked round to the driver's side.
"You never let anyone touch your rifle and you said I can use it today so I'm taking all the time I can get"
Jay laughed "you can use it anytime you wanna practice, you know that right? Just don't tell Ruz because he's been begging me to let him use it since before you joined intelligence"
Hailey laughed at the second part of his sentence "that sounds like Adam"
She saw the way Jay's eyes flickered with disappointment when she called Ruzek by his first name, 'maybe they were still together' he thought to himself, slightly disappointed at the possibility that her and Adam were still together.
"Oh, and thanks by the way, for letting me use your rifle" she said pulling him out of his thoughts.
"You're welcome, it might actually be helpful to have another person on the team who knows how to use it" he started "not that you're not good at using it, it's just helpful having another person, someone I can trust and that I know is good"
His words caused her to blush again, what was with this man and making her blush.
"Yeah, I uh totally get what you mean" Hailey told him as they approached the front desk.
Once they got settled in their spot, Jay showed Hailey some tricks on the rifle that he had picked up while he was overseas, then letting her have a go to try and copy what he did.
Hailey took a couple shots, not nearly as good as Jay. She moved away from the rifle and frowned at where her bullets had hit.
"How'd you do it so good? It's not fair"
"Practice makes perfect and the way you're holding it is kinda wrong"
"Oh, well show me again"
Jay nodded and switched positions with her, going slower showing her exactly what to do, checking that she understood everything before shooting off another couple rounds.
"You get it now?" He asked while switching places with her again so that Hailey was now back on the rifle.
"I think so, like this?" She said placing her hands where she thought they needed to be.
"Almost, right hands gotta move a little more up"
Hailey did as she was told and she felt Jay moving closer to her and then moving her hands to where they needed to be, his eyes met hers and they just stared into each other's eyes for a good 20 seconds before Jay pulled away cheeks red.
"Uh you gotta do it like that" he told her before moving away a little more "now try"
She shook her head, trying to shake off what just happened and shot off a couple rounds hitting the target each time before stepping back and getting excited over her shots.
"I did it" she cheered.
"Hell yeah you did, and you got it so quick as well, I'm seriously impressed"
"Well, I mean I'm amazing so"
"Yeah, definitely has nothing to do with how great your teacher is" he laughed as she rolled her eyes.
"Nope it's because I'm amazing"
"Oh yeah sure it is"
"Definitely is"
Jay laughed, glad that whatever that was earlier didn't affect anything "want me to show you more?"
"Yes! Show me everything"
They were at the range for at least four hours before they decided to leave, Hailey having picked up so many new tricks, she couldn't stop chatting about how cool they were and why hadn't he shown them to her before. They were walking out past the front desk when they heard a voice call out to them.
"Jay! Hailey!"
The pair turned to sound of Vanessa's voice, her and Kevin were standing in the line for the front desk.
"Hey Bro" Kevin said holding his fist out to Jay.
"Hey man, Hey V" Jay responded and hit his fist against Kevin.
"Hails" Kevin held his arm out to Hailey and pulled her into a side hug.
"Hey, Hey V" she said hugging Vanessa after she hugged Kevin.
"You guys leaving?" Vanessa asked.
"Yeah, we've been here for like four hours" Jay told the other two "we were just heading out to go get food"
"We'll have to figure out a time when we can all come together" Hailey suggested.
"Yeah, that's a good idea" Kev said, noticing the rifle case in Haileys hand "damn you let her use your rifle Halstead? Ruz is gonna be pissed" Kevins comment caused the whole group to laugh.
"Yeah, maybe just don't tell him?" Jay suggested causing the whole group to laugh again. The lady at the front desk called out for the next people in line with happened to be Kevin and Vanessa.
"It was nice seeing you guys, see you both tomorrow" Kevin said before walking up to the desk.
"See you two tomorrow" Jay waved by and turned to walk out the door. Hailey followed suit before Vanessa pulled her back.
"Girl, you didn't tell me you and Jay were doing this! I want all the details later, you hear me?" Vanessa whispered in her and Hailey blinked confused at her words.
"Wha-" Hailey started beforr realising what Vanessa was saying "No, V, It's not like that"
"Oh yeah? Then why are you wearing his hoodie, huh?"
"Because I spilt coffee all down my T-shirt and he let me borrow his hoodie, and you didn't tell me you were doing this with Kev either" she whispered putting an emphasis on 'this'.
This caused Vanessa to stumble over her words "Yeah, well, um, it's, you got me there" she sighed causing Hailey to laugh.
"Go enjoy your date V, I want all the details later, you hear me?" Hailey mirrored her friend's words.
"You got it" Vanessa nodded before making her way over to Kevin and waving bye to Hailey and Jay.
Hailey met Jay who was standing at the door, holding it open "What was that all about?" He questioned raising an eyebrow.
"They're on a date" Hailey told him as they walked back to his truck.
"No way, for real?"
"Uh huh" Hailey confirmed.
"Wasn't expecting that"
"Really? They've been making eyes at each other for months?"
"They have?"
"Oh yeah" Hailey sighed and rolled her eyes, mumbling something under her breath about men being absolutely oblivious to everything as they reached Jay's truck. He took the rifle from her, and she went round to the other side of the truck and hopped in while Jay put the rifle in the back seat, then jumped into the driver's seat.
"You told Kev and V that we were getting food?" Hailey questioned as he buckled his seat belt.
"Yeah, I mean, I just figured we would go get food seeing as it's already after lunch and we usually go for food after the range anyway but only if you want too of course"
"Yes of course I want to" she told him as he pulled out of the parking lot.
"Where do you wanna go?"
"I don't know, you pick"
"I don't know either, that's why I'm asking you" he laughed "well we have time to think about it because I've gotta drop the rifle back home before we go anywhere"
"Okay" Hailey nodded and started thinking about where they could go get something to eat.
Jay got back into his truck where Hailey was waiting for him while he dropped the rifle back up to his apartment.
"Thought of anything yet?" He asked.
"I wanna say Bartoli's but they don't open till four and I'm hungry now" Hailey groaned.
"So Bartoli's for dinner then?"
"So, we're having dinner together as well"
"I mean you can never eat a whole pizza to yourself so you're gonna need help"
"Hmm maybe I'll ask Vanessa"
"I doubt she'll be home tonight" Jay said making the pair laugh.
"You're probably right" Hailey laughed while shaking her head.
"I know this nice restaurant that does nice lunch stuff?" Jay offered.
"Sounds good let's go there"
Jay pulled up outside what Hailey thought to be the most adorable little restaurant she had ever seen.
"Okay I love this place already" Hailey said once Jay had walked round from the driver's side to meet her on the sidewalk.
"Good, I'm glad" Jay said walking slightly ahead of her and opening the door for her.
"Thank you" she smiled as she walked in, Jay following her inside. Hailey looked around, it was small, but it was cosier than claustrophobic. It was relatively empty a couple people spread out over the tables and a few servers walking around and behind the counter.
"So how do you know about this place?" Hailey asked.
"Oh um it used to-"
"Jay, honey is that you?" An older woman said when she approached them.
Jay smiled at the woman "it's good to see you Miss Eleanor"
The woman, Miss Eleanor, pulled Jay into a hug "I told you the last time I saw you, stop it with all that miss nonsense and just call me Eleanor" she told him "And who is this?" She asked gesturing to Hailey.
"This is Hailey, my partner, from work"
"Ah, it's nice to meet you dear"
"You too" Hailey smiled and held out her hand to the woman.
"Don't be silly sweetheart" Eleanor told her before hugging her. Hailey laughed and hugged the woman back. Once she had pulled away from Hailey she turned back to Jay "Usual table?" She asked and Jay nodded.
"Yes please"
Eleanor led them to a table at the back of the cafe, it was a round table with four seats around it and a little flowerpot in the middle. There were menus already in front of the seats.
Jay sat down on one side of the table, Hailey sitting opposite him.
"I'll send a server over to you in about ten minutes while you figure out what you want" Eleanor told them as she picks up two of the menus from the empty places.
"Sounds great, thank you" Jay said before Eleanor left them by themselves. Jay turned back to Hailey who was looking at the little menu that was in front of her.
"What do you usually get?" She asked Jay.
"Chicken Salad"
"Hmm I might get that"
"It's so good, trust me"
"I bet" she said as she flipped over the menu to look at the other side "they do waffles as well!"
"Some of the best waffles I've ever had" Jay told her "I usually get the chicken salad then after I'm done, I get waffles"
"I think I'm going to do exactly that"
"Good idea, oh and they also do milkshakes, the chocolate one is the best"
"Waffles and chocolate milkshakes? Who are you and what have you done with Jay Halstead?" Hailey laughed.
"Here, I can't resist not having any, Eleanor will probably bring out milkshakes and waffles even if we didn't ask her too" Jay told her.
"She seems really sweet"
"She is" Jay smiled "she's the best" Jay told her as their server came over. She was probably a bit taller than Hailey; she had her black hair pulled back into two braids and pretty green eyes that stood out like gems.
"Hi, my name is Alison and I'm here to take your order, what can I get you?" She asked in a cheery voice looking straight at Jay giving him a huge smile, Hailey noticed she was trying to flirt with him straight away.
"I'll have a chicken salad and a chocolate milkshake please" Jay told her, completely oblivious of the way the girl was looking at him "Hails, you want the same right?" Jay asked, Hailey didn't miss the use of her nickname either.
"Uh yeah I'll have the same please" Hailey told the girl who briefly glanced over at her them back at Jay.
"Two chicken salads and two chocolate milkshakes coming right up" she said as she wrote it down on her pad "don't you go anywhere" she said making eyes at Jay before leaving.
"Oh my god" Hailey shook her head.
"What?"
"For a detective you're super oblivious sometimes you know that?"
"What are you talking about?"
"The server, she was flirting with you, well trying to"
"What? No, she wasn't"
"Oh, she definitely was, don't you go anywhere" Hailey said mimicking the girl quietly "and you can't tell me you didn't see the way she was looking at you"
"How was she looking at me?"
"Like she was undressing you with her eyes" Hailey said as she rolled her eyes and Jay smirked.
"For real?"
"Oh definitely, it was disgusting" she said and saw his smirk "oh this is just a massive ego boost for you isn't it" she said shaking her head and laughing.
"Well, I mean" he said while shrugging his shoulder and laughing and then Alison brought over their milkshakes, she placed Haileys down in front of her without saying a word and then placed Jays down in front of him.
"Here you are, a chocolate milkshake, made specially by me" she said, smile wide and Jay noticed that she completely ignored Hailey and realised that the server was indeed flirting with him, and it made him slightly uncomfortable that she was coming onto him so hard.
"Uh yeah thank you" he said awkwardly. Alison stood there like she was waiting for something, and Jay figured she wanted him to taste the milkshake, so he took a small sip "it's nice, thanks, what do you think babe?" He said emphasising the word babe and looking over at Hailey whose head shot up from sipping on her drink through the straw.
"Uh- yeah, it's um great" she smiled at Alison who was now completely red.
"I'll be right back with your food" she said in a hurry before turning on her heels and speeding away, Hailey tried not to laugh.
"Sorry for using you as an escape but if you couldn't tell I finally noticed the flirting"
Hailey laughed "it's okay, think you embarrassed the poor girl though"
"Yeah, well she was completely ignoring you and making me uncomfortable so she kinda deserved it"
"Fair enough…babe" Hailey joked causing Jay to laugh.
"Again sorry"
"It's okay, don't worry about it" Hailey smiled and sipped on her milkshake "you're right the milkshakes really are good, even if that Alison girl did make them"
"I don't think she did, Eleanor is usually the one to make them and the food, I think she was just trying to be flirty"
Hailey burst out laughing "oh my god, wow, I don't even have words"
Jay laughed "neither do I"
About fifteen minutes passed before Alison brought over their food.
"Two chicken salads, here you go" she said placing their food down in front of them "can I get you guys anything else? Refills?"
"Refills would be great actually" Jay told her, and she nodded picking up their glasses
"Anything else?"
"That's all, thank you" Jay told her, and she left with their glasses.
Hailey took her fork and began to eat "oh my god that's really good" she told him after she had finished her first mouthful.
"I told you"
"This place is amazing" she said, taking another bite "How did you find this place?"
"Oh, Uh Eleanor is a really good family friend" Jay told her, and she saw pain flicker across his eyes "she uh, she was best friends with my mom" he continued "it's been quite a long time since I've been here, actually, I mean I saw Eleanor at Dads funeral, but I haven't stepped foot in here since mom died"
"Oh Jay…" Hailey gave him a sympathetic smile as she trailed off not really knowing what to say.
"This was my mom's favourite place, this was her favourite table, tucked away from everyone else, in our own little world"
Hailey reached over and grabbed Jays hand which was resting on the table and gave it a squeeze which made him smile.
"She even worked here for a bit; you know?"
"Oh yeah?"
"it was before she had me and Will, there's some old pictures somewhere, her in her server's uniform, I'll have to find it and show it to you"
"Ooo I get to go through old pictures with you? This means I get to see pictures of baby Jay?"
"Maybe, maybe not" he told her, and Alison came back with their refilled drinks, politely giving them to them, without any flirting this time.
About half an hour later the partners were both finished with their food, Alison had already collected their plates, Jay was just about to call her over to order some waffles when they spotted Eleanor walking over to them two plates in hand.
"Here you go" she said as she placed the plates of waffles and ice cream down in front of them.
"Thank you" Hailey said smiling sweetly at the woman.
"Thanks" Jay smiled.
"You two enjoy" she told them, giving Jay a little pat on the arm before she walked away and let the two of them eat.
"Wow. This looks sooo good" Hailey gushed over the plate in front of her.
"Wait until you taste it" Jay told her, waiting for her to take a bite. Jay watched as she put the fork full into her mouth.
"Mmmm, oh my god, that's the best thing I've ever tasted"
Jay laughed "I told you"
"I think Eleanor might be my new favourite person"
Jay gasped loudly, acting hurt "wow, that's just rude what about me?"
"Who said she was replacing you?"
"You're mean"
Now it was Haileys turn to gasp dramatically "that's not very nice"
"You said I wasn't your favourite person" he pouted with caused Hailey to laugh.
"What's so funny?"
"You're adorable"
Jay frowned "adorable?"
"Definitely adorable" she giggled, and Jay shook his head and laughed "and besides you call me adorable earlier so"
"That I did" Jay said before putting a fork full of waffle in his mouth.
The two spent the next half an hour eating their waffles and cracking jokes, all round just enjoying each other's company.
Hailey loved spending time with Jay, it was one of her favourite things to do, he was one of her favourite people if not her favourite person. She was talking for him, and she was falling hard, and she knew it. She tried and tried to push these feelings away, she couldn't fall for him, her best friend. She needed him in her life, she couldn't lose him by scaring him way once she told him how she felt.
Unbeknownst to Hailey, Jay felt the exact same way. She was his favourite person, his best friend. But he couldn't do it, falling for someone who doesn't reciprocate his feelings? Another partner? He needed her in his life, he couldn't lose her by scaring her way once he told her how he felt.
Once they had finished eating Hailey offered to pay but Jay refused, telling her it was his treat and that he'll pay.
Alison brought over the check, handing it to Jay, letting him look over it before he put his card in there for her to take it away to swipe it.
"I'll be right back with your receipt" she told them before walking away.
They wait for her, both of them still cracking jokes while they waited.
Five minutes later Alison was back with the receipt, handing it to Jay, giving him that flirty smile that she had given him earlier. Jay opened it up to retrieve his card and his eyes widened to was he saw inside.
"What?" Hailey asked confused as to what was happening.
"Look" Jay said handing over the receipt which had Alison's phone number on the bottoms of it and 'call me sometime handsome' with a heart next to it.
"Wow that girl is bold" Hailey laughed before handing it back to Jay.
"Yeah, she is" Jay shook his head "Wow"
The two bid farewell to Eleanor, who made Hailey promise she would come back and made Jay promise that he would bring Hailey again, and head back to Jay's apartment.
"You gonna call her?" Hailey asked as they entered his apartment, secretly hoping that he would say no.
"No" Jay laughed
"Why not? She's pretty and you've still got the rest of the day off"
"She's not my type" he told her
"Oh okay"
"What about you, don't you wanna go spend the rest of your day off with Adam" he said emphasising 'Adam' while sitting down on the couch, Hailey following to sit next to him
"Oh- um, that's not a thing anymore"
Jay furrowed his eyebrows "since when?"
"Since ages ago"
"Oh, why didn't you tell me?"
Hailey shrugged "don't know?"
"I'm sorry"
"Don't be" she laughed "it wasn't going to last; I knew that from the moment we started whatever it was"
"But you liked him though, you care about him" Jay looked at her, recalling the words from the argument between Hailey and Adam he overheard.
"You heard all that?" She questioned thinking back to when her and Ruzek had that argument downstairs and Jay walked in on them, realising he had heard most of it.
"Pretty hard not to" he told her, and she laughed.
"Oops" she laughed "but yeah that's over now" she confirmed.
"So, you don't want to spend the rest of your day with Adam then?" Jay teased.
"Oh shut up" she said knocking her shoulder into his.
They ended up watching the new episode of a show they both love and a couple new movies that had come out on Netflix that month.
After the second movie ended, they decided that they were going to order Bartoli's to be delivered, Hailey paying for it, as she had won the argument about paying as Jay had paid for lunch so now, she would pay for dinner.
"So, what is your type?" Hailey asked out of nowhere while they were sat on the couch, waiting for their pizza to arrive, looking through Netflix for a new show or movie to watch.
"W-what?"
"Earlier you said that Alison girl wasn't your type, so what is?"
"I- Um, I don't know?" He said knowing full well that Hailey was his type, that she was the person he wanted to be with, have a life with.
"You gotta give me something better than that"
"What's your type?"
"Taller than me, gotta be taller than me"
"That's not that hard Hailey"
"HEY!"
"I'm just telling the truth, literally everyone is taller than you, even that sixteen-year-old we busted for selling the other week was taller than you" he told her, and she pouted.
"You're so mean to me"
"Okay, come on what else?"
"Gotta be able to give good hugs"
"You sound like such a girl"
"I am a girl"
"You know what I mean, you sound girly, not like Hailey"
"You're the one who asked me what my type is and besides I asked you first, so why don't you answer, huh?"
"Uhhh, strong, independent, sassy, sarcastic, funny" he said listing a few things "short, knows how to put up with my love for golf and my truck" this caused Hailey to burst out laughing.
"Someone who gets me" he continued "someone who I can trust, who I can count on to have my back with anything, who knows what I'm thinking without me having to even say it, some who I can go get drinks with and talk about things that I wouldn't usually talk to anyone about, someone who helps me and pushes me to be a better version of myself everyday"
He finished and his eyes met Haileys he could see her cheeks where slightly red and he knew she understood what he was saying and who he was describing.
"Jay I-" She was cut off by a knock on the door and Jay jumped up and cleared his throat.
"Um that'll be the pizza"
"Yeah" she whispered, getting up and grabbing her purse while Jay went and opened the door and got the pizza box from the delivery guy. She follows quickly behind, money in hand paying the guy, just after Jay takes the box, muttering a quick thank you and closing the door.
When she got back to the living room, Jay had the pizza box open on the coffee table, and the movie on the screen ready to play. She sat back down in her spot and turned to Jay.
"Jay…"
"Let's just eat and watch the movie, okay?" Jay said "if you don't eat soon it's gonna get cold" he told her taking a bite of a slice. So that's what she did, she ate and watched the movie, they both did, in silence.
The movie finished just over two hours later, they had both finished their pizza long before that. The second the movie finished Jay made himself busy with cleaning up the mess from the pizza.
He took as much as he could into the kitchen with him to throw in the trash. Hailey picked up the rest and followed him in there, putting all the rubbish she had collected into the trash can. As Jay started to walk away, she took a deep breath and started talking "My type…" she started, and he turned around to look at her not expecting her to talk
"My type is tall, smart, handsome and funny guys" she started "gotta get my sense of humour and be just as sarcastic as me. They've got to be kind and caring and so god awfully stubborn sometimes" she continued "they've gotta have this insane love for golf and trucks. which I'll never understand but go alone with it anyways" she laughed before going on.
"My type is someone who gets me, who I can trust, who I can count on to have my back with anything, who knows what I'm thinking without me having to even say it" she repeated the words he had said to her "Some who I can go get drinks with and talk about things that I wouldn't usually talk to anyone about, someone who helps me and pushes me to be a better version of myself everyday" she finished meeting his eyes.
"I'm not dreaming right now, am I?" Jay questioned.
"You've been dreaming about me, Halstead?"
Jay shook his head, laughing and held his arms open.
"Come here" he told her, and she did, wrapping her arms around his waist and him wrapping his arms around her shoulders.
"Does this mean you're my girlfriend now?" Jay asked when he pulled away from the hug.
"I don't know, ask me and find out" she said, smile wife.
"Hailey Anne Upton, will you be my girlfriend?"
Hailey nodded "yes, yes, I'd really like that"
"Yeah?"
"Yeah"
Jay cupped Hailey's face with his hands and pulled her into a kiss, her hands resting on his chest. It was electric, Hailey swore she could feel literal sparks, it was the best damn kiss either of them had ever had and it was sure as hell was worth the wait.
Notes: I have never been to a shooting range and I'm only going off what I've seen in tv shows and I don't know a lot about guns either so if I wrote something wrong please don't get mad or hate, I tried my best.
