Epilogue: Sesshomaru and Rin

A cool spring breeze rustled the treetops. The shade of the flowers was just enough, allowing some patches of light to hit the ground. Rin's hands held onto her school bag as she walked up the old trail, her eyes soon drifting to the soft pink petals.

"I think what I'm going to miss the most when spring is over are the cherry blossoms."

"They'll be back next year," Sesshomaru assured her, "and the year after that, and so on."

The thirteen-year-old pondered, a satisfied smile appearing on her lips. "So... forever?"

"Yes."

She hummed. The road ahead seemed endless for a moment. "How long is forever anyway?" she wondered out loud, inhaling the musky scent of the soil beneath their soles.

"However long we want it to be."

The whisper of the leaves outside carried into the quiet house, mixing with the dripping of the coffee maker, and the ticking of the clock on the wall. An April wind rippled the pages of a book left open on a table. It swept through empty corridors until it reached the living room.

From the couch, enjoying the morning light, Rin cackled softly at the photograph of two thirteen-year-olds smiling at the camera, their uniforms disheveled by the cutting breeze outside the school.

"My hair has seen better days," she mused, rumpled brown eyes set on the unruly dark hair that framed the girl's smile.

"I think your hair looks just fine," her husband replied in a time-worn baritone. Rin smiled, slowly turning the page.

"See? That's more like it, no?" she gave a feeble laugh.

Her gaze fell on the photograph of a young woman in a timeless white dress. Beside her was a dapper young man dressed in black. Their smiles retained the juvenile thrill of their late twenties.

"That is one beautiful bride," Sesshomaru agreed, leaning in to place a kiss on his wife's parchment-soft cheek.

Her smile stretched wider as she leaned her head on his shoulder. Her hand reached for his, their fingers intertwined. Just as they closed the leather photo album, the front door opened. Footsteps echoed in the foyer.

"Mom, Dad, we're home!"

There is time and people we want to spend it with; missed opportunities, and second chances we shouldn't take for granted. One spring of 1999, on a day much like any other, Sesshomaru met Rin. Sakura came into full bloom that year and every spring since then.

As the decades went by, their strolls grew longer, their treads slower, but the flowers never failed to bloom. They still walk, and sometimes, on occasion, the dewy scent of the ground beneath their feet brings back memories of two middle-schoolers walking back home, unaware of the future.

And... that's a wrap. Excuse me while I... 😭

Thank you so much for all the love you've given to the story. Knowing that there are people out there who enjoy the fic was what kept me going. Really, thank you.

Although it's been a bit of a wild ride, each chapter bringing forth new emotions, I wanted to give Sesshomaru and Rin a well-deserved happy ending. I hope it didn't disappoint! The theme throughout the story was learning to move on. Some characters did it better than others. Some asked for help, some didn't, and while it took Sessrin some time to come to terms with their past, the results were rewarding. ❤️

While I've loved bringing this story to you, I might need to take a break from writing due to work and other professional goals demanding far more of my attention than I had originally anticipated. That said, I hope to get back to writing new fics in the future!

As always, thank you for reading, and until next time! ❤️
