"Hey. Sam? Mom? You guys ready?"
Dean wasn't happy about this. After he and Sam had found out about their mom working with the Men of Letters he had been furious. After Sam told him about how they could wipe out all the monsters in America he was a little less furious but still suspicious. He trusted his little brother's judgment though. He always had. It was just Sam could be too trusting sometimes. Especially when he thought he could make a difference in the world.
There was nothing wrong with wanting to make a difference in the world. It was just Dean was a little more realistic. What they did made a difference. One monster at a time. Taking out every monster in America? It simply didn't sound like reality. Sam had always been a little more of an optimist though and Dean had never begrudged him for it. He had given his childhood to protect that innocence as long as possible and he was glad his brother still had some of it.
He was just angry with his mom if he had to be honest. She sides with the people who tortured her son and didn't tell them about it. Not to mention leaving them and all the unresolved issues that were brought up. He was working this case with their mom because of Sam more than anything. He trusted his little brother and that counted for a lot. Plus, Sam seemed to have forgiven their mom. He hadn't had any kind of relationship with her and he wanted one. It was only fair that he try for his brother if nothing else.
"Yup. We're ready." Sam said to his brother.
"Okay. Let's go."
Dean said and walked out. Sam sighed and looked apologetically at his mom. He wasn't really angry or upset anymore that she had sided with the people who had tortured him. At first, he had been but he had quickly realized that this was still his mom. He would always side with his brother when it truly counted since they were a team.
But he did want a relationship with his mom and he knew the only reason Dean was putting up with their mom was because of him. He wanted Dean to do it for himself as well. Dean had had some sort of a relationship with his mom since he was older but had still only been four. He didn't want Dean to be angry on his behalf and if it was anyone who deserved to have a good relationship with their mom it was Dean. Dean had always wanted his entire family to be together.
After he had left and gone to the impala Sam and his mom had come out soon after. Sam ended up sitting in the back seat so their mom could ride shotgun. The ride was full of tension and no one really talked much. Thank God it was a simple werewolf case that was relatively close by. They'd be there soon enough.
Unfortunately, these things were never simple. They had ended up splitting up. Sam went with their mom. That had been a bad idea. Somewhere in the back of Dean's mind, he had known it but he also knew Sam was more than capable of taking care of himself.
They had all decided to split up. Sam of course going with their mom. He didn't mind it but he also knew Dean was doing it to protect their mom as much as him. Sometimes that was frustrating but he had also been dealing with it his entire life and was used to it.
The best way to attack the werewolves was to go from two different sides anyway. Once in a while, you would find a pack of werewolves together. This was one of those times. There were at least 8 werewolves. He looked back at his mom and at the nod of his head they went in.
The fight had gone well so far. There were 6 werewolves where Sam and their mom were so hopefully Dean was only dealing with two. He had no backup.
They killed the first 5 easily but the 6th was apparently enraged by the falling of part of its pack. He went straight for Mary who had been busy killing another werewolf. Sam had just finished killing another one a second before and when Sam called out to warn his mom the werewolf lunged at him. They grappled for a second, the werewolf managing to take Sam's gun and shoot him in the shoulder before Sam took the gun back and killed him.
"Sam are you okay?" Mary asked.
"Yeah, I'm good, go help, Dean."
Mary quickly found something to use to put pressure on the wound and not listening to a word Sam said continued to help him. Sam bit back a gasp at the pressure on the wound. He had gotten shot in the shoulder before but he thought the bullet was still in there this time. That made this a lot worse and it have been nice if his mom went to get Dean. For all, he knew Dean was being outnumbered right now while his head was starting to swim from blood loss.
Dean dispatched the two werewolves they were counting on being there easily. Unfortunately, there was one more he hadn't been counting on. The third werewolf was tough but as he thought he heard Sam gasp he dispatched of it quickly to see what was going on. It sounded like he was in a moderate amount of pain as he was holding back the gasp nothing really life-threatening but he still wanted to know what was going on.
"Sammy, you okay?" Dean asked as he walked into the room.
Sam's shoulder was bleeding and his mom was pushing down on the wound to try to staunch the flow of blood.
"How bad is it Sam?"
Dean asked rushing towards his brother and taking the towel his mom was using away from her. For all, he knew she was making it worse.
"Bullet is still stuck in my shoulder," Sam said a little breathless.
Blood loss was starting to take its toll.
"I'll be back Sammy. That bullet has to get out now before it can do any more damage."
Sam nodded. Dean quickly went to get the first aid kit from the impala. He got the forceps out and after cleaning them with alcohol and giving Sam something to bite down on, he set to work. It wouldn't hurt as much as the bullet in the stomach but it was still a bullet wound. Not as life-threatening but could still have the potential to kill.
Their mom was still there but Dean was completely focused on getting the bullet out of Sam's shoulder. After finally getting it out he bandaged the wound quickly. Sam was still a little unsteady so Dean made sure to be there if he wavered while he walked to the impala. Sam made it though.
He got promoted to the front seat for the drive home. Their mom sat in the back. It wasn't really that their mom had been doing anything wrong per se but she should have come gotten him sooner. He had plenty of experience with bullet wounds in his brother. His mom did not. He knew how to help him.
Once they got back to the bunker for the night they said goodnight to their mom and then decided to watch a movie. Sam hadn't lost a significant amount of blood but it was enough. Dean was just glad Sam was okay. That's all that had ever really mattered to him and all that would ever matter. For as long as he lived he just wanted Sam to be okay.
