A/N: So humor is usually my preferred genre to write but 5B moved me to try my hand at pure drama. This is a one shot about Lucifer's perspective in the aftermath of Dan's death. Chloe/Lucifer are very much a couple. Takes place after 5x16.
Lucifer had thought many things over the four years he knew him. He thought he was weak for a while, he thought (often) he was a douche, and he thought he was ultimately a decent guy who struggled and wanted to be good. But most of all, he always thought he was average.
He sipped his scotch and eyed the shoes Dan had had on when he died that were in a plastic back on Chloe's table. Trixie had insisted on taking the shoes from the hospital because she was with him when he bought them but Chloe wanted to get the blood off before Trixie kept them in her room. The shoes, under the blood, were average to their surface. Lots of cops wore shoes like Dan's. Lucifer's shoes were handcrafted, Italian leather that very few people could afford.
Chloe approached Lucifer rather frantically. Now that the war was over Dan's death had been hitting her even harder. It didn't help that Lucifer so far could not get Dan to cross over to heaven. "Do you think Trixie would want to watch mine and Dan's wedding video and when she was born or would that upset her?" Chloe asked, holding up two discs.
Lucifer, formerly the Devil, currently God (though he was still figuring that out), was shocked by the question. How would he know? Dan would probably have some inspirational comment he read in a book to say. "What would you have wanted?" Lucifer asked. Immediately he worried that was the wrong thing to say by bringing up her own loss of her father, whom she just left in Heaven.
"I waited. So I should wait, right?" Chloe took a sip of the water she had close by. "Or I could just leave them out and she can decide, right?"
Lucifer eyed Trixie's door. "I think that's a good idea. She's a smart girl. She'll see them if she wants too."
"I should call Dan's Mom. I want her to know the Espinosa's will always be welcome to see Trixie."
"You did that yesterday, Chloe." Now wasn't the time to use his pet name of Detective.
"But she should know I really mean it." Chloe ran off to get her phone.
For someone who had been around for millenia, this was new to Lucifer. Seeing everyone upset at the hospital gave him a realization he didn't need Linda for. He loved Chloe ans she wasn't the only person he loved. The love was very different for each person, but he loved Maze, Linda, Ella Amenadiel, Trixie, baby Charlie, and yes, even Dan in a dysfunctional way; he wouldn't have put so much thought into a revenge plan if he hadn't cared so much about Dan having shot him. Everyone who was on Earth that he loved, minus Charlie, were devastated.
His father was a God who was famously more interested in Earth than his family. That was one way Lucifer has identified he was already a different God. He was on Earth and would remain on Earth as much as possible, though he'd pop up to Heaven, but he was he to be with his family; well, the family that matter the most to him. Upon further reflection, the first God was a terrible ex-husband who banished his ex-wife to hell. Dan became a better ex-husband than he was a husband, and a better father and it didn't take him an eternity to get to that place. Dan was better than God, at least in that respect.
Lucifer could hear a sad song about missing someone faintly, playing from Trixie's room. Trixie, who needed to hear Dan was dead from Lucifer in order to believe it. Trixie, who now was going to grow up without her actual father. He didn't do fear easily, but secretly he was terrified she would ask him if he thought her father was in Heaven, because he couldn't even tell that child a lie over the horrifying truth. Lucifer had heard about Chloe's father on their first case. Chloe was struggling with missing Dan as well as having her grieving child be in an all too similar situation Chloe had been in.
Lucifer eyed Dan's shoes yet again. They didn't seem so average anymore. Dan's shoes were suddenly more intimidating than running the universe. Lucifer would be damned all over again if he ignored his family for the world.
"Chloe," Lucifer said once she was off the phone, "tomorrow I'll look into getting the blood off the shoes."
Suddenly, an idea hit him. He stared at the shoes and thought about the blood coming off and his new found powers removed the blood. If Trixie ended up insisting on the blood against Chloe's wishes, he could in all likelihood put it back.
"Have I told you yet that you're my favorite God?" Chloe went over to Lucifer and leaned into his chest, and he put his arm around her.
It was small, but a start nonetheless in Lucifer's new journey into familyhood.
A/N: So, that's the end of this story. Dan wasn't perfect, but I loved watching his journey, and everyone in 5x15 were heartbreaking. I hope you all liked it! Thanks for reading.
