Chapter Forty-Four:

Magneto stood, with Rogue by his side, on the lowest level of the newly constructed dome. They were speaking with Charles, Jean, and Scott. His son was present as well but seemed it be absorbed with the book in his hands and not paying attention to the conversation. There were other students in the room, making use of the space, completing their homework, but he paid them little mind.

"Charles, again, I really thought Magneto was going to mention it before he went to get the supplies," Rogue said, grinning up at him, an amused look on her face. He gave her a look before sighing and turning to his old friend.

"Charles, I-" he said.

"You don't have to apologize, old friend. It's quite all right," he said. "Rogue," he said looking up at her. "I've read over this syllabus of yours and there are some rather thought-provoking topics," he said with a raised eyebrow. "Including alien civilizations?" he asked. He noted a few looks of skepticism within their small group.

'Time travel is too unbelievable, but aliens are fair game?' he thought to himself amused.

"Yeah," she said letting out a nervous laugh as she brushed her hair behind her ear. "Truth is mutants aren't even close ta being the strangest species in existence," she said.

"Like the Asgardians?" Pietro asked, looking up from his book.

"Yup, that's one example," she answered with a smirk.

"Really?" Jean asked.

"Wow," Scott muttered under his breath. Rogue opened her mouth to speak again but-

"Rogue- I've read every book the school library has on Norse Mythology. I have follow-up questions. Lots of questions," Pietro rapidly said.

"Son, when did you take up this subject?" he asked.

"Today," Rogue answered for him, with a grin. "It was only six books, but still it's impressive," she commented.

"So, are they actually gods? Do they really live on a flat piece of land in the middle of space? What's up with Loki's kids? Is one of them really a giant wolf? How did Loki give birth to the goddess of death? What did they think about death before she was born?" Pietro asked rapidly.

Rogue let out a soft chuckle before she took a breath.

"No, they just age very slowly. Yes, it's flat and about the size of the United States, but it's in a pocket dimension. You can't just fly there. The Bifrost's usually the way in and out. Yes, he's a wolf. Asgard actually has a little over twenty religions so they had plenty of theories prior to Hela's birth. Her story is a long one and the truth is I could dedicate a few hours talking about her alone. We'll cover what we're gonna cover when I get up to parallel dimensions," she said. "You're just gonna have ta be patience," she finished.

"Hm, hello, have you met me?" Pietro asked. Rogue let out a laugh at that.

"I promise, we'll get to it," she said. "Our universe is a vast place with a multitude of different life forms. I'll do my best to teach ya about the ones I know about. Earth," she said before pausing. "Or as we're known intergalactically, 'Terra,'" she said using air quotes.

"Terra, huh?" Jean asked with a slight smile.

"This is, kind of, out there, Rogue," Scott added. Magneto watched a look of guilt pass over Rogue's face before she quickly recovered, a nervous smile returning to her features. He caught her eye with a questioning look. She gave him a brief shake of her head- telling him to dismiss her expression that it had nothing to do with him personally.

"Yeah, I know it sounds completely insane," she said. "But everything I'm gonna talk about in this lecture series is based on first-hand accounts. Nothing secondary. All my knowledge comes from definitive sources," she explained.

"Well, that's a relief to hear," Charles said.

"I'm certain everyone will try to keep an open mind," Magneto added, eying Charles, who responded with a prompt nod.

"Yes, of course, we all will," he agreed. He heard Rogue let out a sigh of relief at the exchange. He turned to look back at her and gave her a quick wink, which brought a genuine smile to his girl's face.

"So, who's your definitive source on Asgard?" Pietro asked. Both of them turned to look at his son.

"We'll get to that," she said.

"Oh, come on. Give me a hint," he pestered.

"Not gonna happen," she said, crossing her arms over her chest.

"God, Rogue, you're such a tease," he said, a knowing glint in his eyes. Magneto felt his eyes widened at his son's tone.

'How dare he,' he thought as he posed himself to confront his son. Rogue's hand on his arm gave him pause. His eyes flashed to hers and he found, not anger, but amusement there.

"It's better than the alternative. And you'd know all about that, wouldn't you, Pietro?" she smirked. His son's mouth hung open for a brief second before he started to laugh. Rogue quickly joined him.

His gaze flashed between the two. The annoyance he felt at the exchange had a familiar sting to it. As though he'd had to tolerate these types of interactions before. Normally, he would dismiss such a strange sense of deja vu. However, giving all Rogue had told him, he let his mind linger on the sentiment.

Only to be followed with a sharp pain on the left side of his head and the immediate need to close his eyes.

Magneto was standing in a room made entirely of metal, gazing out of a large window overlooking a courtyard below with a metal fountain and its many moving parts. His attention was drawn to the sight of a little girl, with long braided green hair. She was sitting with her leg crossed beneath her, meditating in front of the fountain. Green magnetic energy emanated all around her as the fountain lifted into the air. He studied the intricate mechanism pumping the water out of the fountain. He was filled with pride as it all worked seamlessly under the young girl's control.

"How's Lorna training going?" he heard Rogue as she came to stand beside him.

"Wonderfully," he smiled.

"She's getting so big," she said. Adding, "again," with a smirk in her voice.

"A blessing in disguise, after all," he said as he kept his gaze on the girl.

"I'll leave you to it," she said, before leaning up to kiss his cheek. He turned his head and met her lips. He felt her smile against him. She gave him another soft peck before walking away from the window.

"I know that look," he heard her say, now addressing another. "What did Crystal do this time?" she asked incredulously.

"The gardener apparently," his son answered unamused.

"Good lord, that woman has no shame," Rogue said annoyed.

"She never has," he sighed. "I don't know why I thought she'd change," he said.

"Wishful thinking?" she asked.

"Oh Rogue, the only wishful thought in my head is- what would my life had been like if I had gotten to you before my father," Pietro said- hearing the smirk in his voice. Magneto felt his eyes widened at his son's tone.

'How dare he,' he thought as he posed himself to confront his son. But was stopped at the sound of his wife's laughter.

"Oh, sugar- even if you had, you wouldn't've known what to do with a woman like me," she said.

"I couldn't've learned," he quipped before they shared a laugh together.

Magneto, having heard enough, cleared his throat, rather loudly. Rogue's chuckle grew softer as she returned to his side. She placed her gloved hand in his and squeezed it reassuringly.

"You know, either of us mean anything by it," she whispered.

"I know you don't," he uttered, as he eyed his son across the room.

"He's just teasing," she defended.

"I'd prefer if he'd tease someone other than my wife," he bit back, staggering to keep his voice above a whisper. "He's only gotten worse since his marriage fell into disarray," he muttered.

"Which we're doing something about," she reminded him.

"Son," he said at full volume, a slight edge to his tone. "I assure you, we are working on this. You won't have to stay married to that woman much longer and soon you can begin your search for a suitable partner," he said, as his hand gripped hers. She rested her head against his shoulder and he felt himself relax somewhat. "Preferably a mutant one, this time," he added.

"Yeah, all that sounds great, dad, but you're assuming Blackbolt will grant us an annulment," Pietro said.

"Once we start the shipments, and I make a rather reasonable demand in exchange for that service, I doubt his people will give him much choice in the matter," he answered.

"The last thing he wants is a revolt," Rogue added.

"Precisely," he agreed.

"Speaking of insubordinance, where's Charles on all this?" Rogue asked, glancing up at him.

He let out a brief chuckle before replying, "he still believes it's a waste of resources, borne of the personal need of the royal family," he answered.

"Can't he see the importance of maintaining political alliances?" she asked, fed up with Charles as she often was. "Apocalypse won't stay dormant in North America forever. Eventually, he will attack," Rogue said.

"I know," he said.

"And when that time comes, we'll need all the allies we can muster," she continued.

"I know," he said again as he squeezed her hand.

"I'm more than willing to do the harvesting myself," she offered annoyed.

"I doubt that will be necessary, dear. As our population grows, so too does our need for resources. Better to update Tempo's rotation schedule now and begin to cultivate a surplus. The work is dangerous but necessary. Charles will come to understand this. I'll see to it," he said.

"Not that his approval is needed," she muttered.

"No, perhaps, not legally. Better to have his factions of mutants on our side. We have enough fronts to defend as is. We can't afford in-fighting," he said.

"We never could," she sighed, her voice full of regret.

"Time makes sages of us all, my love," he said before he placed a kiss on her forehead.

Wanda paced back and forth in the brotherhood manor's living room. In front of her, her daughter sat on the couch. On T.J.'s lap was a plate with a turkey and cheese sandwich that Freddy had been kind enough to make. Out of the corner of her eye, she watched the younger girl, with her tail, lift up the glass of juice, and take a sip before returning it to the floor. Her tail, disappearing from view after its use.

Her eyes lingered on Kurt, once again. He was sitting next to T.J., his hands fidgeting in his lap as he stared at the younger girl. He hadn't taken his eyes off her since she had told them who she was. He had been silent as she explained what she could, but attentive.

'He believes her,' she thought with a sigh. 'He definitely believes her.'

In the background, she could hear a low buzz emanating from the television. The volume was on, but just low enough to be audible. Lance sat in front of it, his arms crossed over his chest as he listened to both T.J and the news. Since he hadn't said anything so far, she knew there had been no mention of them.

Behind her, she could hear Toad breathing, from his seat on Freddy's shoulder on the recliner they were sharing. Every so often he made a revolting noise. A chuckle or the snap of his tongue eating god knows what. She shuttered at the thought of it. She hadn't been able to look at him since T.J's disclosure but she felt his eyes on her as she paced.

"Like I owe him anything,' she thought, irritated. She shook her head as she focused her thoughts back on the issue that actually mattered. "Okay," Wands said as she stopped her pacing. She turned to once again look at T.J. "So, you're from the year two-thousand-twenty-seven," she recapped.

"Yeah, twenty-twenty-seven," T.J. repeated before she meekly took another bite of the sandwich.

"And you live on an island called Genosha, where my father is the king of all mutants," Wanda said. She heard Lance let out an amused huff of disbelief.

"All the good one's anyway. Grandpa keeps the bad mutants from invading us. We're safe if stay on the island," she said.

"Yo, then how'd you end up here?" Toad asked.

"You and your cousins got on the wrong transport, right?" Wanda asked.

"It was an accident," she exclaimed. "We didn't mean to," she said.

"I'm sure it was," Kurt said kindly.

"Just- tell us what happened again," Wanda said.

"Tempo had to go to one of the harvesting islands away from Hammer Bay and we got on her ship by mistake," she said as her head turned towards the ground. "We should've- we should've made them turn back- but Rachel said there was a deadline and if we made Tempo miss it, it could put our alliance with the Inhumans at risk. Luna said we couldn't let that happen. That her mom was looking for any excuse to take her back to Attilan and she wanted to stay with us and Uncle Pietro," she said.

"Of course, he survives," Lance huffed.

"Yeah," Freddy grunted in agreement.

"Right," Wanda muttered, crossing her arms over her chest. "And you've never met any of us?" she asked pointed around the room.

"I was really young during the sentinels' wars. I don't remember much of it," she said.

"Great-" Toad huffed. "We're all gonna die and she don't remember nothing."

"I'm sorry," T.J, said quickly. Wanda's eyes narrowed as she watched the sandwich shake in T.J.'s little hand.

"Toad," she said through gritted teeth as she spun around to face him. "Lay off. It's not her fault.'

"She's just a kid," Kurt added.

"Yeah," he said as he hopped off of Freddy's shoulder and landed in front of her. "And now this kid's the only thing standing between all of us and an early grave. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm too young to die. So, she needs to start remembering," he said.

"Apocalypse destroyed all the sentinels. Didn't he?" Freddy asked.

"They can build more, Blob," Lance muttered darkly.

"Okay but Apocalypse is gone, right?" he asked before pausing to scratch his head. "Hey, what happened to him?" Freddy asked.

"He fell through some sort of crack in time," Kurt answered.

"A time vortex? Like me?" T.J asked- peering up at her father.

"Maybe, I don't know, but Rogue said he might be back," he answered.

"Oh, come on," Toad called out annoyed.

"Why isn't anyone talking this?" Lance asked.

"Rogue told Logan. He said we shouldn't worry about it. That it was only a possibility," Kurt answered.

"So, we risked our lives in Mexico for nothing," Toad said dryly.

"We don't know that," Kurt said.

"It's looking like it," he said as he cleaned his ear with his finger. "We've got what? Ten maybe fifteen years until the evil murder robots take over the country and throw all of us in work camps," he said dryly.

"I think so," T.J muttered.

"You think?" he squealed as he stepped towards the couch

"Toad, seriously, back off," Wanda said warningly. She held his gaze with narrowed eyes. The expression on his face dropped replaced with an apologetic look.

"I'm sorry, Sweetums. It's just- come on, this kid shows up talking about how millions of people are gonna die but doesn't have any details?"

"If T.J. knew her knowledge would be so important, I'm sure she would have paid more attention in history class," Kurt offered.

"It's not just- we didn't learn about the war in detail," she said nervously.

"Heh, and I thought our school was crappy," Freddy laughed.

"Hey," T.J, exclaimed as she stood up, gracefully shifting the plate to the couch with her tail as her hands balled by her sides. "You don't know what you're talking about. My auntie's a great teacher," she proclaimed.

"I'm sure she is, Taila," he said standing and placing his hand on her shoulder. "Why don't you take your sandwich in the kitchen and finish it at the table," he suggested.

"Yeah," she muttered as she grabbed the plate with her hand. "Yeah," she repeated as her tail reappeared and picked up the glass. "Okay," she said before she glanced around the room, looking lost.

"It's right through there," Wanda said as she gestured towards the door that led to the kitchen.

"Thanks, Mom," she said as she walked towards the kitchen. "Thanks, Dad," she said.

Kurt let out a distressed yelp before he rubbed the back of his neck with his hand. Wanda found his eyes meeting him and she gave him what she hoped was a reassuring smile as she took a step closer to him. He smiled back as T.J. exited the room.

Both of them let out a simultaneous sigh in relief before they stepped back and sat on the couch together.

"We are too young to be parents," Kurt muttered under his breath as he closed his eyes.

"Yeah," she agreed as she leaned her head back against the couch- the following suit- needing a moment to collect her thoughts.

Charles sat within the circle listening to the conversation between Rogue and Pietro.

'Of course, when dealing with awkwardness, why not add more fuel to the fire?' he thought with a raised eyebrow. He noted the look of disapproval on his old friend's face but didn't have the patience to offer him any sympathy. He clearly hadn't considered the ramifications of his choice in partner. Perhaps now, he might begin to truly realize what he was signing up for.

His eye widened as he felt a sudden spike of mental distress from Magneto.

"Not again," he muttered, as Magneto froze in place, his hand still gripping the side of his face, as his expression went blank. Rogue walked directly in front of him, studying his face.

"Again?" Jean asked.

"Professor, has this happened before?" Scott asked.

"Yes, this strange phenomenon occurred in my office yesterday. He was completely unresponsive for almost a minute. However, he left before I could properly determine the cause of his mental anguish," he explained.

"So, can you help him or not?" Pietro asked impatiently.

"I'll try," he said as he inches closer towards Magneto.

Jean watched as Rogue quickly sidestepped, placing herself between the professor and Magneto.

"He'll be fine in a few minutes. Best not to interfere," Rogue declared.

"Interfere in what?" the professor asked, his tone accusatory.

"Rogue, why not let him check?" Jean asked. Rogue let out a sigh as she a thoughtful expression cross her face.

"What's going on with my dad?" Pietro asked.

"Remember the enhancer?" Rogue asked. Pietro nodded. "He did some serious damage to his mind while he was using it," she said. "On top of turning off his emotions, he also accidentally suppressed a subsection of his memories into his subconscious," she explained.

"The mind can do that? Give itself amnesia?" Jean asked curiously.

"It can, yes," Rogue said thoughtfully, nodding towards her.

"Rogue, you should have told me," the Professor declared.

"Really?" she laughed incredulously as she placed her hands on his hips. "And what would you have done with that information?"

"Help him," he answered strongly.

"You would've tried, I'll give ya that. And in attempting to do so, you would've made the situation worse with your involvement. Wasn't worth the risk," she retorted.

"And how exactly would I have made it worse? From what I can tell, Magneto has been an emotional wreck since you two starting talking. Are you certain you aren't merely projecting your own influence on him," he bit back.

"As usual, you have no idea what you're talking about, Charles," she said, rolling her eyes.

"A position your silence has forced onto me," he said.

"That's what you're not getting. This ain't about you. You don't need to be consulted on every matter of the mind. You ain't the only telepath on the planet. You ain't even the most powerful one, no matter what you tell yourself," she argued. Jean watched the Professor's eyes narrow.

"Last I checked, I was, in fact," he said pointedly.

"Last I checked, Jean hadn't reached her full potential yet," Rogue bit back. Jean felt a gasp leave her as she covered her mouth. Scott turned to look at her- he saw a slight expression of doubt on his face.

'She's said this before- but I dismissed it- I didn't want to hear it,' she thought.

"But I sure as hell do every time I borrow her powers. It's only a matter of time before she surpasses you and that ego of yours needs to claim the hell down to be ready to accept that and allow Jean the room she'll need to grow into her abilities. Not feel like her powers are wrong for blowing yours out of the water," she said.

Jean felt a chill run down her spine at Rogue's words.

"I've never said that out loud before," Jean whispered. The maddened expression on Rogue's face dropped, replaced with an apologetic one, as she turned to face her.

"Shit, I'm sorry, Jean. I started to explain this to you," she said.

"I know- I remember- I didn't want to hear it," she repeated aloud.

"And I'm not trying to force this conversation on you now. You have time to sit on this- to get comfortable with these thoughts and prepare for what I will need to tell you. But you're so afraid of your powers. It's ain't good for you," she said.

"I can't help how I feel," Jean exclaimed.

"I know, Jean, this ain't your fault," she said. "It's Charles'," she said dryly.

"Hey," Scott objected.

"You wanna talk projecting feelings?" she asked as she swiftly turned back to look down at the Professor. He looked up at her, with narrowed eyes. "You know what you're capable of, Charles, and the idea of anyone who doesn't share your moral code having access to your abilities scares the shit out of you," she said.

"There is a responsibly to having access to another's mind that most with these powers would exploit rather than offer aid," The professor said pointedly.

"Which is why your lessons with Jean have focused so strongly on morality as well as the practical application of her powers," she said.

"And where would you find fault with my approach?" the Professor asked dryly.

"You've watched Jean grow. You've seen the power surges and you know she's only gonna get stronger and that scares you too," she said pointedly. "But the problem, Charles, is she can sense that," she said, her voice rising. "She's telepathic, of course, she can literally feel your fear and internalize it," she finished strongly.

Jean watched the Professor's eyes widen slightly, as his eyes flashed to hers. She felt a sudden wave of fear and guilt radiate off of him. The Professor took a short breath before he closed off his mind- his emotions were gone as quickly as she had sensed them.

'She's right,' Jean realized, her eyes widening.

"Rogue, back off. The professor knows what's he's doing," Scott defended.

"But that's exactly my point, Scott, he doesn't. Not all the time, at least. He ain't infallible and can make mistakes just like the rest of us. And what's his projection has done to yours and Jean's perception of her abilities is undeniably an error in judgment," she said.

"Maybe, you're the one who doesn't know what they're talking about," Scott accused.

"But she does, Scott," Jean said. He looked at her surprised. "The Professor based his training on his powers. Rogues basing hers on her use of my powers. If anyone is going to know how they work- it's her," Jean told her boyfriend.

"Like I've said, your natural mutant abilities are completely controllable," she said.

"An interesting choice in words," the Professor spoke up. "Natural mutant abilities. I noticed it the other night as well," he said. Rogue's eyes flashed towards Charles and then back to hers. Rogue took a deep breath as she walked up to Jean, taking her hands in hers.

"They're a layer to your abilities that you don't about. It's a separate issue from your natural powers. I promise when you're ready to open up that can of worms, we'll talk. You just let me know when and I'll make myself available. In the meantime, you just keep handling those powers surges like a champ. You got this, Jean. You can do this," she said strongly.

Jean took a deep breath, sensing Rogue's confidence, taking it in. It was a nice change in pace from the Professor's fear and Scott's doubt.

"I will," she said with a smile. Rogue gave her a smile before pulling her into a hug.

"You're gonna be fine, I promise. I'm gonna help you every step of the way," she said. 'If I can train Rachel, I sure as hell, can train Jean,' Rogue thought. Jean shook her head as she quickly pulled out of Rogue's mind, not meaning to read her thoughts.

"Thank you," Jean said, dismissing the stray thought from Rogue's mind, suppressing the urge to ask who Rachel was.

"Always," she said.

Wanda opened her eyes with a sigh. She and Kurt were still sitting next to each other on the couch.

"I can't believe this," he whispered. "It's so crazy," he said.

"I know," she nodded, her tone also hushed.

"What do we do?" he asked.

"How am I supposed to know?" Wanda asked. "I've never been a parent before," she said.

"And you think I have?" he asked.

"No," she exclaimed as she struggled to keep her voice low.

"Hey," Lance called out. Wanda and Kurt turned to look at him. "Don't you think you two are buying into her story a little too easily?" he asked. Wanda shared a glance with Kurt. "For all you know, this could be so kind of trick," he suggested.

"Yeah," Freddy agreed. "How do we even know she is who she says she is?" he asked.

"Hm, hello, have you looked at her?" Toad asked.

"Maybe she's a shapeshifter," Freddy offered.

"Why would Mystique pretend to be our daughter from the future?" Wanda asked.

"I think mother would have created a more believable alias than this," Kurt agreed.

"Okay, maybe it's not Mystique," Lance said. "But there's a lot of mutants in the world. That's all I'm saying," he said.

"Could be a telepath messing with our heads," Freddy said.

"The professor or Jean could prove she's telling the truth," Kurt argued.

"So maybe we should ask one of them," Lance said. Wanda turned to look at Kurt again.

"What do you think?" she asked him.

"We should tell someone what's happened," he said.

"We can't just- we need to tell her what we're going to do," Wanda said nervously.

"We will," Kurt said. "No one's reading her mind without her permission. But we- we need help, Wanda. We can't deal with this on our own," he said.

"Yeah, I know," she sighed. "The phone's in the kitchen," she said. He gave her a nod before they both walked into the kitchen.

As they entered the kitchen, Taila flashed a meek smile before she stuffed the remaining piece of her sandwich in her mouth.

"T.J.," she said as pulled out a chair and sat next to her. "We're going call someone and ask them to read your mind. Maybe you know more than you think you do. Is that okay?" she asked.

"Depends on who," she said as Lance entered the kitchen.

"I was going to ask the Professor," Kurt said.

"Charles Xavier?" Taila asked as Lance walked over to the refrigerator and pulled out a bottle of water.

"Yeah," Kurt nodded. A disgusted look crossed the younger mutant's face.

"I don't want Xavier reading my mind," she exclaimed.

"Yeah, that's not suspicious at all," Lance muttered as he removed the cap from the bottle. Wanda's eyes flashed to Kurt's, trying to ignore Lance.

"T.J., listen, the year you are from, is very far in the future. I do not know why you distrust the professor," Kurt said.

"Auntie said not to let him read my mind. That he's not as smart as he thinks he is," T.J. said.

"Well-" Kurt said nervously. "He has given me a home for many years now and I trust him to know what the right thing to do is. So, I am asking you to trust me. Can you do that?" he asked.

"I don't know," she said.

"Please," Wanda added. "We've helped save the world once before, but- I don't know- this feels different. It feels like it's bigger than us. That we can't handle this on our own. So, please," she said again. They listened to T.J. let out a sigh.

"Okay, okay, I'll let him read my mind," she said reluctantly.

"Everything will be okay," Kurt said.

"I hope so," she sighed.

"I guess we should head over to the institute then," she said as a look of panic passed Kurt's face.

"Rogue's class. I completely forgot about it. How late are we?" Kurt asked alarmed.

"Pretty late," Lance answered.

"Auntie's teaching?" T.J asked.

They both turned back to look at their daughter.

"Yeah, it's her first class today," Wanda answered.

"What?" she exclaimed excitedly as she stood up. "That's so cool. Can we go?" she asked as she took hold of her hand. "Please," she said, drawing out the word.

"Hm, yeah, we can go. I'm supposed to be there," Wanda said. "But how are we supposed to explain her?" she asked looking at Kurt. "Should we just tell everyone?" she asked.

"I'm not sure that's a good idea. Not until we know more. Maybe, if I had an extra image inducer," he said.

"Come on," Lance said. "We're late enough. You two can figure out the details on the way," he said.
