Chapter 8
"Where is Kurt?"
Blaine's palms were sweaty. He resisted the urge to wipe them on his pant legs while Burt Hummel stared him down. He could do this. It was fine. Blaine was good with parents. He could make an good impression on Kurt's dad.
"He's inside. Waiting for you. He was so excited to find out you were coming!"
Burt's face softened. His eyes stopped flitting around at the house and settled on Blaine. He gulped at the appraisal.
Please don't think I'm not good enough…
"He's a wonderful person. Kurt is. We… I have really loved having him around."
Burt didn't respond other than a grunt and another look. Blaine licked his lips.
"You have to understand, we didn't mean to cause a panic or a manhunt. We were just trying to keep Kurt safe. He lost all his memories, you see. He thought someone was after him and we were just trying to keep him safe. He hit his head- but he's fine! He's not damaged. Like, he hit his head, but his face looks fine. Nice as ever," Blaine babbled.
Burt stared at him, unreadable. "Kurt was injured?"
Blaine nodded vigorously. "But he's fine now! He's getting his memories back! Wes made sure he was okay. He's a doctor- well, he's a nurse, but he's studying to be a doctor."
Burt eyed him like he was the one who had hit his head. He raised an eye brow in a very Kurt-like way. Must be genetic.
"Son, that's not what I'm concerned with at the moment. Where is Kurt?"
Blaine swallowed and gestured towards the house. "Follow me."
He very calmly (and not at all terrified) led Burt to the doorway just as the first few drops of rain plopped onto the ground. Mentally, Blaine was beating his head into a wall.
As they entered, the other boys all twisted to look at them. They were all seated around the table (Sebastian was perched on the edge like the rebel he was) holding steamy mugs of what Blaine thought must be hot chocolate. Wes always made hot chocolate when he felt guilty.
The hazel-eyed teen cleared his throat. "Everyone, this is Burt Hummel." He was about to introduce everyone when Burt quickly scanned everyone present before turning back to Blaine.
"Where's Kurt?"
Where was Kurt?
Blaine took a deep breath. This was the father of the boy he was in love with and he was blowing it. He fixed his smile and drew on his natural charm. "He must be in the bedroom, Mr.- er, uh I mean Burt." He turned to the others. "Is Kurt still packing?"
Wes stood and stuck his hand out to shake Burt's, which he did begrudgingly. "Hello. I'm Wes. I run this home." Burt didn't look pleased. He was mumbling something under his breath about irresponsible adults. "Kurt went outside to look for Blaine. Maybe he went around back?"
They all rushed outside. At first, the boys of Dalton house huddled together in a sad clump, waiting for Wes, Burt, and Blaine to bring their friend to them for goodbyes. However, after they called for the boy and silence met their calls, everyone began to search for him while ignoring the rain.
"He's not here!" Blaine yelled above the thunder. His face was pinched with worry. Burt scratched roughly at his head.
"Where the hell is he? I gotta say, I'm not really impressed with your establishment at the moment."
Wes' eyes flashed in the lightning. "Look, I am terribly sorry about not reporting him immediately, but he was just here. No one ever comes here!"
"I'm just saying this is all your fault-"
"Hey!" Nick interrupted as he ran up carrying a soaking wet bag. He looked worried. "Kurt had this when he went outside!"
David looked sick. He recognized the bag he had loaned to Kurt only a half an hour ago. Two police cars rolled up at that moment and the detectives made a bee line for Burt, serious black umbrellas bobbing above their heads. As he explained what was happening to the best of his ability, Wes gathered his boys. They all looked frightened and cold and upset. Sebastian had stood under the small awning while everyone else looked for Kurt and played on his phone. If Blaine hadn't felt so lost, he would have punched him.
Something was very wrong here. He felt it in his gut. Kurt wouldn't just run off and not without his things.
"Mr. Hummel, I understand you're frustrated but you need to let us handle this. We think we know who the perpetrator is and it's best if you just stay here until we check out her apartment."
"So you think it's his coach too?"
The detective looked impressed. "We can't divulge any information at this time, but it would be safer for you to wait here." She grasped his arm. "I promise we will do everything we can to find him."
Burt deflated and hung his head. Water dripped off the edge of his ball cap to the puddle below. "Yeah. You're right. Call me when you hear something?"
She nodded and jogged off with the other officers. They pealed away with sirens blaring and lights flashing in the rain. As soon as they were out of sight, he straightened up and started towards his truck with a determined set of his jaw.
"Hey!" Blaine hurried after him. "Where are you going? They said wait here."
Burt didn't turn around as he yanked open the squeaky door to his truck. "I'm going to find my son. If he's there at her apartment, great, but what if she took him somewhere else? I'm going to look so more ground is covered." He slammed his door shut.
"Do you even know where he is?" Blaine asked, exasperated. This is exactly what Kurt would have done. Jumped headlong into something to help the person he cared about. He might not look like his dad, but he was so much like him.
"Well… no." Burt's confidence slipped momentarily. "But I have to at least look."
"What if I knew where to look?"
Sebastian sidled up, his hands in his pockets casually as if he wasn't soaked from the downpour. They turned to look at him. Burt's eyes narrowed.
"And how would you know where to look?"
Sebastian raised his chin. Somehow he pulled off the superior attitude with his hair plastered to his head. "Because, like I told you all earlier I've been doing research trying to find out who Kurt was and that included people around him. If you're saying it was the cheerleading coach, Sylvester right? If you're saying it's her, she probably won't go home. That's the first place they will look." He raised his eyebrows pointedly like everyone should have guessed where he was going. Blaine huffed impatiently. Sebastian rolled his eyes. He was surrounded by morons. "Does she have an office at the school?" He dangled his phone in front of their faces with an address on the screen.
Blaine's mouth dropped open. Burt smiled tightly. He reached out his open window and patted Sebastian's back. "Thanks, son. I'm going to go check it out. Good idea."
Sebastian looked a bit smug. The fact that Burt looked so pleased with Sebastian and annoyed with Blaine stung him a bit. Wes put his arm around Blaine's shoulders.
"Come on, boys. Let's go inside and wait for news."
Burt started his truck. Sebastian stepped back, but Blaine broke out of Wes' grip and clung to the truck door.
"Wait! You can't go alone! It could be dangerous! Let us come too." Water snaked down the back of Blaine's neck and into his shirt. Burt stared him down before the corners of his lips quirked up, threatening a smile.
"I'll be fine, kid. You all should stay here."
"Blaine, I won't risk your safety," Wes said firmly. Blaine shook him off again.
"I have to make sure he's okay!"
"You're staying here."
"I have to agree with him," Burt nodded towards Wes. "You need to stay here and the longer I stay here talking to you, the more trouble Kurt could be in."
"You're not the only one who cares about him!" Blaine blurted out. He clung to the door with one slippery hand and waved to the rest of the Warblers with his other. "We all do! And I know for a fact that if Kurt was here right now, he wouldn't want you going off into a dangerous situation by yourself."
Burt was definitely smiling now. Wes sighed, knowing he was losing the battle.
"Blaine, my job is to keep you all safe and we are not going off to god knows what-"
"Didn't you tell me once that everyone deserves to be safe and you would do anything to make that happen? We have to do that for Kurt."
Wes drug a palm down his face. "Yes, I did say that but this isn't for us to get involved-"
"Wes… I love him…" Blaine couldn't meet the other's eyes when he said it, but Burt looked like he had just had his suspicions confirmed. Wes groaned and stuck a finger in Blaine's face.
"Alright, we will go with Burt, BUT we are calling the police AND if it looks too dangerous we are not going anywhere near it. Understand?"
Blaine responded by hugging Wes tightly and running off towards the van, the others following.
"We will follow you there," Wes told Burt. He nodded.
"Don't expect me to wait for you."
Wes sighed and plodded tiredly towards the van. Maybe he should have been a veterinarian.
You're going for a little ride. Coach Sylvester says to get lost and stay that way…
Everything felt fuzzy and his head throbbed. Something was tight around his wrist and cutting into his flesh. His arm was asleep and his neck was sore. Kurt sat up with a jolt and then wished he hadn't.
"Ow…"
Kurt realized three things: One, he woke up sitting in a chair. Two, one arm was handcuffed to said chair. And three, he was sitting in an office… it looked familiar, but he had just had another head injury and he was a bit foggy on the details.
Blinking at his surroundings, he rubbed his achy neck and hissed when he touched the wound on the back of his head. The door opened suddenly, causing him to whip around with fright.
"Oh good! You're awake!"
It was a very tall blonde woman in a track suit and a shorter blonde teenager wearing some kind of atrocious camouflage outfit. He knew them! He racked his brain for a name, but came up short.
"What the hell is going on?"
The tall woman smiled while the teenager went to stand beside her.
"Porcelain, we are so glad you're home. Now, not to be blunt, but we have a proposition for you." Without looking away from Kurt, she opened a hand and was given a piece of paper by the teenager. "I need you to sign this saying we had nothing to do with your disappearance and you absolve us both of any responsibility. Sign here. Becky, give him a pen."
Kurt swallowed. Things were coming back in waves.
"Becky? You pushed me out of the car! I… I remember now!" He looked at Sue. "And you! Coach S… Sylvester! Coach Sylvester!" He jabbed a finger on his free hand at her. "You're the one who told her to! But why?"
Sue didn't seem concerned, but her eye twitched. "Becky, what's wrong with him?"
Becky shrugged. "I think he got hit so hard his brains leaked out."
The chain on the handcuffs went taut as Kurt tried to jerk his hand away. "I had amnesia, but I'm starting to remember now. You just wait until the police and my dad get here!"
Sue laughed heartily and Becky giggled along with her. "Yeah, that won't be happening. We made sure of that." She turned back to Becky. "Go get it."
Becky scampered off to do god knew what and Kurt struggled against his bond. Sue's eyes narrowed at him as she put her hands on her hips. "So you forgot everything, huh? Damn. That would have been nice to know before I made this plan." She toyed with a small key that Kurt realized went to his handcuff. "You're not going to sign it, are you?"
Kurt stopped pulling long enough to fix her with a withering glare. She made a dismissive noise and went to sit behind her desk, tossing the key between her hands. Kurt resumed trying to free himself much to Sue's amusement.
"Why? Did I do something? Why would you do this to me?"
"Because!" She stood and slammed her palms down on the desk. Kurt jumped at her sudden change of attitude. "You don't deserve it! I do! I have worked hard to get where I am and everything just falls into your lap! You and your stupid glee club and your insufferable father! I should have gotten the recognition! Not you!"
Kurt stilled. "What the hell are you talking about? I have like, no luck."
She laughed without humor and paced in front of the desk. He watched her toss the key on the desk. "I wanted the article, but they wanted you because your gay. You get everything."
"You're kidding right?" He couldn't stop the disbelieving snort that escaped his mouth. She frowned at him. "I'm bullied almost daily because I'm gay. The school hates the glee club. I will agree with you about my dad though. I hit the father jackpot with him." He ignored Sue gagging. "Wait, is this about that magazine article? I remember now! For the Cheerios! They… they wanted me?"
Sue seethed. Kurt laughed again. "You're pissed because they picked me and not you? Are you fucking kidding me right now?" He threw his head back in disbelief before gasping at the pain that shot through his head and neck. Sue smiled wickedly and Kurt felt like a mouse trapped in a corner by a cat.
"None of that matters now, because I'm taking care of you once and for all." Becky came back into the office carrying a cup which she gave to Sue. She stalked up to Kurt slowly and he tried to back away as far as he could, but he was stuck. "I give you, Sleeping Death!"
"You're going to poison me?" Kurt whimpered. Sue scrunched up her nose.
"No, I'm going to drug you and stick you on the next boat to Mexico. Try it. It's apple flavored and delicious. Full of protein." Her smiled curled up like a snake unhinging its jaw as she forced Kurt to drink it. He struggled, but with Becky holding his arms and Sue pinching his nose, he had no choice. He fought as hard as he could until things became a little blurry.
Pavement crashed by in a wild grey blur. Trees swayed dangerously over in the wind as they sped by and rain splashed the windshield, swiped away quickly by one of their wipers. The other one was missing some rubber and it made a grating squeal against the glass. The storm was definitely picking up now. Blaine tapped his foot frantically, willing the van to move faster as they followed Burt's truck. Wes squinted at the road, driving as fast as he could while still being careful. Blaine wished he was a little less careful.
Why didn't I stay with him… Why did I have to go off and sulk like that? Now he's gone and it's all my fault!
Blaine's thoughts wouldn't give him a moments peace. He was so mad at himself for letting his guard down when he knew someone was after Kurt…
"You need to stop."
Blaine glared at Sebastian. He knew he was being irrational, but he was angry.
Angry at the psychopath that kidnapped Kurt.
He was angry at himself for letting it happen.
He was angry at Sebastian for looking so damn calm.
He was angry at the fact that he would never see his mom again.
He was angry at the van for being a piece of junk and going too slow!
"What?"
"Stop beating yourself up. You know it isn't productive." Sebastian studied his nails. "Kurt doesn't need you to feel sorry for yourself. He needs you to come riding in on a white horse and rescue him."
"I'm not beating myself up," Blaine lied as he glowered at him. Sebastian remained unbothered. "I'm just… I could have stopped it."
Sebastian snorted. "Okay. Look, just stay calm. We will be there soon."
Blaine rolled his eyes away and rested his forehead against the cool glass on the window. Jeff leaned up from his seat behind Blaine.
"He's going to be okay. The police are on their way and we'll get Kurt back."
Blaine picked at a button on his blazer. "What if he doesn't want me to save him? What if he doesn't want me at all? I… I meant what I said. I love him." He whispered the last part and looked up when Nick snorted.
"Dude, are you kidding? Kurt definitely loves you back."
"Yeah," David chimed in. "I've put my best moves on him and he's only got eyes for you. I even did that eye sex thing and I might have as well been a Beanie Baby."
Nick snorted again and Jeff giggled. Trent popped up from his spot opposite Nick. "Don't worry! He chose you, remember? The day he came to us, he got on your bed! It's a sign, right?"
Blaine couldn't help but smile at the younger boy and he crossed his arms. "God, I hope so."
Everyone was quiet, lost in their own thoughts before David cheerfully broke the silence.
"So, can we talk about how Blaine made himself look an ass to Kurt's daddy? Like, it couldn't have gone worse! Well, I guess if you had talked about his butt or something."
Blaine groaned and gently smacked his head on the glass. He wished he was already there.
Kurt could remember a time when he was very little that he got into the medicine cabinet. He found the cough medicine that tasted really yummy and drank a bunch of it before his parents discovered him. They rushed him to the hospital and he remembered it being one of the worst days of his life.
Ever since then, Kurt was always wary of medication. He didn't like the way they made him dizzy and groggy. So after Sue and Becky forced him to drink some of the drugged smoothie, he was understandably upset. He started feeling the effects almost immediately. The room swirled around him and his vision went fuzzy.
His head lolled to the side as he tried to see what they were doing. They were fighting. Becky was panicking, worried they were going to get caught. Sue was trying to tell her it would be okay. They weren't paying attention to him.
He was close enough to the desk that he could reach some of the things on it. He reached over to the phone and missed it completely. He felt like he was on the merry-go-round. Kurt finally grabbed the receiver and punched in 911.
They were still arguing. Perfect. He left the receiver off the base enough where they could hear everything. Maybe someone would come. The little handcuff key winked mockingly at him. He could reach it if he stretched… He swiped at it, but a wave of nausea hit him and he bent over. He was running out of time. Finally getting a grip, Kurt lunged for they key again… and got it! He almost yelled out in triumph, but bit it back at the last moment. He fought against blacking out as he tried to fit the key into the small hole. Suddenly, the key was snatched out his hand and Sue was there sneering at him.
The punch she delivered snapped his head back before he could see it coming.
"How dare you! You are going to ruin our plan! Maybe I should kill you!"
It was the last thing he heard before he finally succumbed to the darkness.
By the time Burt made it to McKinley with the Warblers, it was late afternoon and the school was abandoned, classes and after school clubs being long over. The door was locked and they all quickly looked for another entrance before Wes sheepishly made a suggestion.
"I could pick the lock…"
The others turned to look at him, mostly with admiration. David was grinning like he had just won the lottery.
"Wesley Gilbert Montgomery the third! How come this is the first I'm hearing this?"
Wes scratched at his neck. "Look, I'm not getting into specifics, but sometimes you have to bend the rules a little." He narrowed his eyes at David. "And I'm not the third nor is my middle name Gilbert."
David grinned wider. "You're such a badass, Wes!"
He shooed the others away and got to work fiddling with the lock. It didn't take long for them to get inside and they snuck down the hallway looking for signs of Kurt.
"Ew. Public schools smell so bad."
"Shut up, Sebastian."
"Guys, I'm scared."
"It's okay, Trent. We are all here with you."
Burt shushed them all and glanced into an empty classroom. "I have no idea where her office is, but I'm sure we will find Kurt when we find it."
"Maybe it's by the gym-"
"Shush!" Blaine hissed. He was the only one who hadn't spoken. "I hear yelling!"
They all listened and heard the muffled yelling Blaine was talking about. They crept towards the sound and found the door to an office. The light was spilling through the door by a window and they peeked inside. A gasp rippled through all of them as they watched Kurt, handcuffed to a chair, reach for the phone. He missed and they gasped again, then he finally got the phone. Jeff wordlessly slipped the cellphone out of his pocket and tiptoed down the hall to call the police. It looked like Kurt was hurt so he would need an ambulance.
"What's he doing?" Trent whispered. Nick clapped a hand over the younger boy's mouth and shook his head. It wasn't safe to talk. Blaine gnawed at his fingernail as Kurt reached for the tiny handcuff key on the desk. Oh no! Sue had seen! They looked at each other frantically and Burt grimaced when she punched Kurt. He jerked his chin towards the door, letting them know wordlessly he was going inside. Wes shook his head vehemently, but Burt ignored him and cracked the door.
Sue was yelling at Kurt, not watching the door. Becky was by the window, breathing hard and rocking a little. She wasn't doing so good. It must have finally hit her how serious this was.
Burt had crouched down and was slowly making his way to Kurt and Sue when it happened.
Achoo!
All eyes immediately went to Nick except for the boy in question who looked at Sebastian. The taller boy was covering his mouth with a hand and blushing in embarrassment. Nick smirked a little. At least it wasn't his fault this time.
Several things happened simultaneously. The first was Burt leaped up towards Kurt. He had slumped over after the blow and seemed to be knocked out. The second was that Blaine charged into the room behind Burt with the Warblers close behind. The third was Sue grabbed a letter opener off of her desk and held it close to Kurt's throat. He didn't react.
"Don't come closer!" Sue's eyes flicked around wildly. Becky glanced wide-eyed between them all.
Burt walked slowly to Sue, not taking his eyes off her. His palms were up in surrender. "Hey, let's take it easy here. I just want my son back and you want to escape. You can do that, Sue. If you hurry, you can get away before the police get here."
Sue swallowed hard and Blaine inched up behind Burt. She saw them closing in and pushed the letter opener to Kurt's neck. The pinch caused him to stir and he moaned groggily. Burt sucked in a breath as Blaine whimpered helplessly.
"Stop where you are!" Sue shouted. Kurt's eyes rolled around in his head.
"What did you do to him?" Blaine asked. He had never seen Kurt like that before. Sue smirked.
"Sleeping Death!" Everyone gasped again, horrified and Sue rolled her eyes. "Oh for the love- it's not poison! I need to rename it I guess."
Burt sighed in relief and stepped closer. Blaine followed close behind. If only he could get to Kurt…
"Sue, you're outnumbered here," Blaine said calmly. "You should listen to Burt and run while you have the chance. Give us Kurt and you can get away."
Burt and Blaine weren't far now. Burt reached out towards the letter opener. "Just hand it over and we can all get what we want."
"No!" she snarled. "I win this time! Me!" She lunged forward with the letter opener as Kurt's eyes snapped open. He swatted her arm away and Burt took the opportunity to dive for the letter opener. Trent saw Becky run to Sue's aide.
"Look out!" he yelled. Blaine jumped in front of Becky, blocking her from getting to the struggling pair behind him. Becky tried to duck around him, but David and Nick joined Blaine and she sat down hard on the floor.
Burt had almost wrestled the letter opener out of Sue's hand when he yelped.
"She bit me!"
Sue cackled and raised the letter opener before Burt made one last effort and grappled for the weapon. He wrenched it away before Sue kicked him hard in the leg and she ran for the door. As she neared the door, Sebastian stuck his foot out and tripped her. She hit her head hard on the floor and blacked out. Sebastian smirked.
Burt stood with a groan and rubbed his leg while Blaine snatched the key from where Sue had dropped it and immediately released Kurt from his handcuff. He caught Kurt as he slid, now free from the handcuff. He mumbled something as Blaine held him, but he shushed him.
"Don't try to talk, sweetie. We've got you."
"Hey, do you hear that?" Trent said. Sirens blared outside and they saw blue and red lights flashing through the window. Wes sighed.
"Did I ever mention how much I hate cops?"
"Tell us more about your life of crime, Wes," David smiled. Wes ignored him and helped the others get Kurt outside to the ambulance.
Lights flashed bright everywhere in the parking lot of the high school. They reflected blue and red in Kurt's foil-like emergency blanket that had been draped over his shoulders in the back of the ambulance. Blaine thought he looked ethereal, like a beautiful dream he never wanted to wake up from. He ignored the purpling bruise on his angel's cheek. It would heal soon. Kurt didn't see him. He was focused on talking to yet another police officer, tiredly resting his head on his dad's shoulder. Burt had one hand bandaged and his other held Kurt's tightly. He hadn't let go of it since they drug Kurt out to the ambulance earlier that night.
The Warblers had stood off in a knot, always together. The police had questioned each of them while the medics worked on Kurt and Burt (the latter did so reluctantly. He was only concerned about his boy.) Once they had finished, the boys had shuffled to the side of all the action and waited to hear from Kurt. He had regained consciousness relatively soon and spent several long minutes embracing his father, causing Blaine's heart to break a little. Thankfully, he was able to answer the questions asked of him. He was recalling more and more as he was surrounded by familiar ground.
They had also been treated to see Sue Sylvester being hauled into custody, ranting and raving about how she wasn't finished. Becky was more subdued, crying and frightened. Blaine felt bad for her long enough to remember she had pushed Kurt out of a moving car and then bludgeoned him over the head. That made him feel much more okay with her being taken away.
They watched Kurt happily as Burt squeezed his shoulders and surreptitiously swiped tears of relief away from his eyes. Blaine had hoped. Maybe Kurt would want to talk to him, say something, but he didn't look around for Blaine. He seemed content to be where he was, in the arms of his father. He overheard an EMT say they were taking Kurt to the hospital to run tests and check him out.
A sudden commotion caught everyone's attention. A gaggle of teenagers were trying to break through the throng of people staring at the school parking lot in nosy fascination.
"Move! We are Kurt's friends and we demand to know he's okay!"
"If you don't let us through, I will tell every news crew it's because I have two gay dads and you will have a lot of angry phone calls and emails! I'm a fantastic actress! I can sell it!"
"Yeah, I don't need to act. I will shove you up his ass! I'm from Lima Heights Adjacent and I will end you!"
Kurt noticed as well and squinted at the teens before he waved them in. The officers reluctantly let them through and Kurt was suddenly surrounded by several boys and girls who were very happy to see him. With a tug of his heart, Blaine wondered which one was Finn. Surely this was his glee club he had heard about. As they all chatted and cried and laughed together, Blaine nudged Wes and tilted his head towards their van.
"Let's go."
The others stared at him incredulously.
"What do you mean, let's go?" David asked. "You have declared your love for Kurt to everyone except Kurt! We deserve closure man!"
"You have to be brave," Jeff said.
Sebastian just leveled him with a knowing gaze.
Blaine shrugged them off. "Guys, he's busy right now. Let's just go home." He started towards the van. Wes sighed and guided a half asleep Trent to follow Blaine.
Nick, who had been quiet this whole time, glanced towards Kurt. He looked a bit tired, but happy. He knew Blaine was being silly. So, he did what any good friend would do.
ACHOOO!!!
The fake sneeze (that was more like a scream, let's be honest) attracted the attention of Kurt's school friends, Burt, and the other Warblers, but most importantly, it got Kurt's attention. He called out to them, shouting for them to come meet his friends.
Blaine shot Nick a murderous glare and he shrugged as if it hadn't been intentional. The Warblers shuffled over to Kurt who called for a group hug. They obliged, crinkling his blanket.
"Guys, these are my friends who kept me safe the whole time I was lost! This is Wes. David, Nick, Jeff, Sebastian, and oh, poor thing! The sleepy one is Trent." He searched their faces until he finally landed on Blaine's who was definitely not hiding behind the others. His friendly smile melted into something softer, something reserved just for him. His cheeks pinked. "This… uh, this is Blaine. My very own Prince Charming."
His friends must have caught something in his voice because most of them grinned widely and sidled away to give them a moment together. The Warblers backed up a bit too, leaving Blaine alone standing in front of Kurt shyly.
"Hey," Kurt breathed. He was staring into Blaine's eyes like her really was a prince from a storybook. Blaine stared back, his heart racing. He was transfixed, lost in Kurt's eyes like he was drowning.
Burt coughed, reminding them they weren't quite alone. "I'm going to… Uh… I don't know. I'll be over there." He jerked a thumb over his shoulder to a spot not too far away. He wasn't letting Kurt out of his sight.
In the silence that followed, they both seemed to get very shy. It didn't feel like they had last talked only a few hours ago. It felt like days.
"So, you're going to the hospital?" Blaine tried.
Kurt nodded as he smoothed out a crease in his blanket."Yeah, just so they can make sure everything is alright. They don't think I got another concussion, but just to be safe. Dad insists." He rolled his eyes, but it was said fondly.
Blaine smiled tightly. "I hope everything is fine. I mean, like there's nothing wrong with you. I mean, of course there's nothing wrong with you, but like, your body. Not that there's anything wrong with your-"
"Blaine!" Kurt laughed. Blaine looked at him helplessly.
"Yes?"
"I wanted to ask you this before, but I wasn't sure how you felt… but tonight has made me realize life is too short for regrets. Especially when I keep getting kidnapped by a crazy cheerleading coach and her henchwoman." Blaine could only listen, stuck in Kurt's eyes like a fly in a web. "Would you be my boyfriend?"
Blaine answered by kissing Kurt hard on the lips, then gentler. Kurt's lips were very soft and he melted into them as happily as he would drown in his eyes. Kurt dropped his blanket to cup Blaine's jaw with one hand and thread his fingers through the soft hairs at the nape of his neck. He shivered and settled his hands on Kurt's hips. Another cough from Burt startled him into removing his hands and bracketing them on either side of Kurt's hips. Blaine felt Kurt nibble at his bottom lip and then tentatively run his tongue along it. His knees almost went out. He felt like he had been denied water for years and now he was standing under a waterfall. He heard wolf-whistles and cat calls coming from the Warblers, but they were soon silenced by a stern look from Burt.
As nice as it would have been to never stop kissing Kurt, a throat was being cleared pointedly behind them. Kurt lingered on his lips for another moment before smiling into the kiss and pulling away slowly. They stared into each other's eyes again as Burt shuffled up awkwardly and stood beside Kurt. Blaine held onto his hands as long as possible until the EMT informed him it was time to go.
"Well, that woke me up." Kurt winked. "I was getting a bit tired. So I'll take that as a yes?" Kurt said, looking at Blaine through his lashes.
"It's a definite yes," Blaine replied as Kurt's hands slipped out of his. Cheers sounded behind him as his obnoxious friends and Kurt's glee club celebrated the brand new relationship. Kurt didn't stop smiling at him until his dad gently steered him into the ambulance and shut the doors after nodding at Blaine. He didn't exactly smile, but there was a twinkle in his eye that gave Blaine hope.
David clapped Blaine on the shoulder as the ambulance drove away. "Now we can go. B, you about ate his face off!"
"Shut up, David," Blaine said, but the huge smile of his face contradicted his words. He watched the ambulance as long as he could before following the others to the van.
