Artemis POV
Artemis Fowl and Butler were in space in a spacecraft in the middle of nowhere. According to Butler. Artemis knew exactly where they were. Artemis went up here on his own behalf, to study and explore. Artemis was up to something, as always.
Every time Butler was busy doing something, Artemis Fowl the Second was working on an experiment he hid from him. He didn't exactly like doing this without him knowing, he had that feeling of guilt he hated. Even though he was an adult now, he knew what Butler would do if he knew. He would turn the spacecraft right around and head back to Earth.
Artemis floated to the front of the spacecraft. All the blue lights of the screens made him look devilish like when he was young. He tapped a couple of the screens swiftly, almost gracefully. One of the screens lit up red with a beeping noise. He frowned, wondering what the problem was. What could be wrong, Artemis thought. The probe hasn't gone anywhere. He had sent out a small probe into a large nebula that could not be seen from looking out the spacecraft. It was easier for Artemis to hide his experiment because Butler didn't understand half of what was on the screens.
Artemis tapped another series of buttons. The probe had successfully entered the nebula but he lost any control of the probe. The only signal he had from it was its location. It was already in it. Artemis was indeed interested but he did not like this situation. There was something that happened that he didn't understand. He groaned and studied the situation carefully. I've clearly lost the signal. If it was jammed, I could easily find what was jamming it. Hmm… The probe was there but it had seemed to completely disappear from view.
Just then Butler walked in - more like floated in - holding a tray of pouches that were space food. Butler himself hated space food but it was all they had. He had asked Artemis if it was possible to create fake gravity so they could walk but Artemis said it was just some movie rumor and was quite impossible - impossible without magic. Artemis was startled that Butler came in and tapped something on the screen. The screens turned back to their default state.
"Hey Artemis, I brought food. It's similar to ceviche. You seem to be eating less recently." Butler said. Artemis' stomach rumbled. Now that he noticed, he was hungry. He was so focused on his work he hadn't eaten much. "Say, have you reported to LEP recently or Foaly?"
"No. I thank you either way, Butler," Artemis said, but he could tell he was slightly suspicious. Just then Artemis had a giant breakthrough. He waited until Butler floated away and tapped rapidly, his fingers a blur on the screens. He did a dozen math equations in his head and started to write notes. When he stopped, The screens were full of notes that wouldn't have made sense to anyone but Artemis.
A month later Artemis had constructed a small wristwatch. When Butler asked what it was, if Artemis was honest he would have said it could track where nebulas interact with the atoms around it and charge them, creating a wormhole to possibly change locations. But he said, "I've constructed a wristwatch from minerals from space. It could possibly measure new kinds of units." Butler didn't seem too interested in that.
It's merely a prototype and if I could I would hide all the wires sticking out if I could. Artemis thought. It's surely not formal but it'll have to do. Especially in this situation… I have to tell Butler. He has set it to go to a small bedroom on the spacecraft… Artemis sighed and wrote a small note on a sheet of paper with a pen that he let float around. There was an old computer on board, from the early 2000s. On the screen was and image of the small bedroom and its coordinates. It had all emergency programs in it which would bring him back if something went wrong. He was wearing his astronaut suit in case he accidentally teleported outside. Artemis was ready to go.
On the wristwatch, there was no watch, really. It was a watch but Artemis had removed it. It had a metal cap with a symbol of a bow and arrow. What the goddess Artemis used. Artemis Fowl twisted the cap. A bright flash of blue filled the room. Butler noticed and came to the room as fast as he could float. Artemis had disappeared. Butler grunted. It was half worry-grunt and half angry-grunt.
Where has he gone? Butler looked all over the place until he found a small note with Artemis' handwriting on it. Butler read once then twice, more agitated. What have you done now, Artemis Fowl. He set the note down. It said:
Dear Butler,
I'm sorry if I had worried you.
I had tried to solve our little problem but it seems something has gone wrong for you to be reading this.
You might need Holly and the other's help
-Artemis
