Kara was shooting through the sky. Below her she could see the Sweetwater River. She followed the river. Riverdale wasn't that far away. She was going to enjoy spending time with her cousins and she was sure that they would want to see her too. She really needed the vacation. Things had been so hectic at National City that any break would be a welcome one. Grant was being so unreasonable lately, asking Kara to do more than even she was capable of. Her cousins, the Coopers, still didn't know her secret and she intended to keep it that way. The less they knew, the less likely they were to become a target. They were expecting her to arrive by bus. When she got close to Riverdale, she would change into her civilian clothes and show up at the bus stop, where they would be waiting for her.
Kara thought about her cousins, Betty and Polly. She wondered what they were up to. She'd heard that Polly was with Jason Blossom. From what Kara was able to gleen, the Blossoms had some bad blood with the Coopers, but the two had overlooked that and were now dating. Kara thought it was sweet that their love could blossom despite their families' animosity. Betty on the other hand had eyes on the boy next store, one Archie Andrews. Kara was curious if the two had gotten together yet.
Kara looked down at the river. She was flying high enough that no one could see her, at least without a telescope or binoculars. She scanned the ground. The river twisted and turned. Up ahead she could she a rock poking out of the water. On top of the rock, it looked like there was a person sitting on it. Why was there a person sitting on the rock? Maybe they were out for a swim and had stopped for a quick break? Or maybe they were in trouble? Kara decided to check it out to make sure someone wasn't in danger. She flow down towards the ground, landing in a thicket of trees. Supergirl couldn't be seen this far away from National City. Kara quickly changed into her civilian clothes and headed towards the river. She could see the person on the rock. It was a girl. Kara guessed she was a teenager. Her hair was red and she wore white clothes. "Hello! Hello!"
The girl turned to Kara and stared at her. "Are you okay?"
The girl said nothing. "Do you need help?"
The girl still said nothing. Kara sighed. "I'm coming over there."
Kara stripped down to her underwear and dove into the river. She swam over to the rock. Kara raised her head and floated in the water. She examined the girl. Her clothes were wet. Her eyeliner was running. She had a look of shock on her face. "What happened?"
"My brother," said the girl.
"What happened to your brother?" said Kara.
"We were in a boat," said the girl. "I dropped my glove and he reached down to pick it up. Then the boat...the boat turned over."
"Where's your brother?" said Kara.
"I don't know," said the girl.
"Here, let me help you," said Kara. She climbed on the rock. "I can take you to shore."
The girl raised an eyebrow. "You can't."
"I can," said Kara. "I'm stronger than I look."
The girl hesitated for a moment, weighing her options, and then decided that maybe she should let Kara help her. The girl got on Kara's back and Kara swam to shore. When they got to shore, Kara made sure that the girl was alright. She then went to put her clothes on. As she lifted her jeans, the girl spoke. "What's your name?"
"It's Kara. What's yours?"
"Cheryl," said the girl.
"Well nice to meet you Cheryl," said Kara.
That was Cheryl Blossom. Kara didn't bring up that she was Betty Cooper's cousin. She used her cellphone to call for help and soon a rescue crew arrived. Cheryl didn't say anything to Kara as they waited. Once this incident was over, Kara met up with her cousins. They were curious why she wasn't on the bus. She concocted a story that she had gotten off the bus to get a cup of coffee and stretch her legs. She meant to get back on the bus, but it was gone when she got to the bus stop. So she had to walk to Riverdale. It wasn't too far away. So that was why she had been on the banks of the Sweetwater river just in time to hear Cheryl's cries for help.
Kara didn't have much contact with Cheryl for the rest of her visit. Aside from when Kara saved Cheryl, they had only one serious interaction. Kara was at the mall with Betty when Cheryl walked up to them. "Are you seriously wearing that sweater?"
Kara guessed she was talking to her. She looked down at her maroon sweater. "What's wrong with it?"
"Everything. Here." Cheryl grabbed Kara by the arm and dragged her into a clothing store. She picked out a new sweater for Kara and watched as she tried it on. Kara had to admit that she liked the new one better than her old one. Cheryl went ahead and paid for the sweater. That was the closest Cheryl got to saying thank you.
