Chapter Thirteen
Of Fallen Fortune
The Citadel was not what Josephine expected.
As someone who had spent her entire life on the same planet, she had expected the seat of power within their galaxy to be more than just a space station. They were many things about the Citadel that did live up to the expectations she has of course. She had caught sight of many different species of aliens and humans going on about their lives. She had seen many shops, lighten up in the different culture of their patrons along with drinks and foods that she had never even heard before.
But they hadn't managed to spent much time by themselves with their bodyguards keeping watch nearby. Given their status and their wealth, it was a way of discouraging anyone from having any nefarious idea. While on Antiva, it hadn't been that necessary to have bodyguards, given they lived on her family lands, here however, was a foreign area and her father had been more paranoid as of late.
With the school year on vacation when her father had told her that he was going to the Citadel, she had wanted to visit the seat of government within the galaxy and her father hadn't had the heart to refuse her from coming.
"Josie," a voice called out entering inside her room.
Her younger sister, Yvette was all smile when she entered within the room. Her skin was much darker than Josephine's who had taken the same shade as their father, thought the resemblance between them was noticeable to all who see them together. The two sisters shared much of the same features and even their eyes were of the same shade of color. Yvette was only younger than her by a few years and yet her smile was blinding as she reached where Josephine was seating.
"Yvette, what did I tell you about entering my room without knocking?" Josephine said, her tone exasperated.
"Please it's not like you're playing with your dolls," Yvette countered.
Josephine feels her cheeks flush.
"I wasn't playing with them," she said, "I was just fixing their clothing."
Yvette gave her a look that told her that she didn't believe a word of what she just told her. When she was much younger, before Yvette was born, her father had spoiled her with a collection of dolls from well-known shops around Ferelden, Orlais and Antiva. Josephine had grown quite attached to them and even now on the cusp of adolescence she still sometimes spent time with them and fix them when she sees them dirty or even out of place.
Of course, her younger sister had to walk into her room by then…Josephine loved her sister dearly but sometime she annoyed her very much.
"What is going on that you have to run in here for?" she asked, "Do father need us for something?"
Yvette shook her head at that, the dark curls dancing to and fro at her excitement. Now that she was looking at her younger sister, the girl was vibrating with excitement.
"No, not that," she said, "They're Jedi here…and they're talking with Dad."
Josephine straightened lightly.
"Jedi?" she repeated, feeling her eyes widen lightly, "Are you certain?"
Yvette nodded.
"Yes," she said, "I saw them."
Josephine could feel something spark within her at the words. She knew of the Jedi. She doubted there is someone in the galaxy who didn't know about them. They were a mysterious and very ancient from what she had read about them in the history they had of them in Antiva. It would seem the Jedi had been in existence even before the Citadel was the seat of power within the galaxy.
Josephine straightened up from where she was lying on and stood up, straightening her dress.
"Where are they?" she asked.
"I think they're talking to Dad," Yvette said, a light smile upon her lips, "You want to go and talk to them?"
Josephine nodded and walked out of the room, hearing her sister following after her. The two sisters made their way through the hallway hearing her father's voice…thought not catching what he was saying given what was going on within her mind but as she drew closer, a new unfamiliar voice spoke out.
A woman's voice.
The Jedi, her mind whispered to her.
"We will do our duty till you return home Mr. Montilyet," the woman was saying, "However, do you have family here with you?"
"I am here with my daughters," her father answered.
It was when Josephine arrived within the room, drawing the attention of her father and of the Jedi that were with him. Her father smiled lightly at her as she and Yvette approached but Josephine attention was upon the two Jedi that were across her father.
They were both wearing similar robes she noticed at first. Gold and white robes which they had a brown cloak attached to her form with a small buckle that had a symbol upon it, one that she remembers seeing on something about the Jedi. One of them was a woman, and adult woman with golden hair and soft gentle eyes as both of her hands were joined in front of herself, hidden within her sleeves.
The other one was much younger, younger than Yvette she realized. Short red hair, framing a long face with long elvhen ears and bright silver eyes. Her features were much too serious for a child of her age. Her own cloak covered her entire body, thought Josephine could see a light inquiring look upon her features as she observed them, with eyes too wise and too old on the face of a child.
"Ah, here they are now," her father smiled approaching them, "Master Jedi, I will like to introduce to you my two daughters, Josephine and Yvette."
This job just got a lot more difficult, Ellana thought to herself as she observed the two girls across her.
She stayed silent as the introductions continued and gave a light of her head when her name was announced by her master, giving a light smile to accompany. However, within herself she can feel the light doubt of this protection details going more and more complicated. While protecting only Mr. Montilyet was doable, adding his daughters to the equation was not something that she had expected…thought it would make sense since she had seen one of the daughters when they first arrived. She just hadn't made the connection then.
Given the emotions she could feel from the two older girls across her, Ellana wondered if they knew about the assassins that were after their father's life?
"Ellana, come with me."
She glanced at her Master as the woman led her toward a corner of the room.
"Keep your guard up," she told her with a light frown upon her face, "Montilyet may think that Assassin have honor, but people who kill for money are never so black and white. You will be in charge of keeping his daughters safe."
Ellana nodded at her.
"The Force still feel twisted Master," she said, "The danger is still there."
She nodded.
"It could mean that the Assassins are not far," Solana told her, "Or they could be getting ready to make their move soon. I will protect the father when he leaves for his meeting today. Now I have to speak with the guards about their usual routine, you can stay here and socialize with the daughters. They seem to be quite interested in you."
Ellana nodded. She could feel it as well their curiosity and apprehension when they were first meeting them.
"Do you think they know the real reason we're here?" she asked.
"I don't know," Solana answered her, "But they're smart girls. They'll probably think we're extra precaution from an overly cautious father. I'll be right back."
She nodded at her master who left the room and she turned her attention toward the Montilyet family. Their father was speaking to them as she approached and the look on the girls' faces were puzzled at least.
"…extra precaution," the man was saying to them.
"But we always made do with Antonio," the eldest said, Josephine she was called if Ellana could recall.
"And I trust him to do his job well," the man answered, "However, a little extra precaution never hurt anyone. We are still staying here before we return to Antiva at the end of the week."
Josephine frowned lightly at him.
"Is everything okay father?" she asked.
The man smiled at her.
"It's fine," the man told her, "Don't worry about anything."
Ellana had heard those words and she knew that the girl was smart. She was probably starting to figure out something was off, given their presence. She can feel them in the Force, while the youngest sister, Yvette seems to be excited and joyful, the older one Josephine was curious and yet, worried probably about her father she mused.
Later that afternoon, Mr. Montilyet left for work and with a meaningful look from her Master, Ellana knew that she had to stay in the apartment with the two girls. She was still wearing her cloak as she took her seat upon one of the nearby chairs and sink into a light meditation. The Force hummed around her just as it always done on Odessa thought it required a bit of effort from her considering that everything on the Citadel was artificial…no real living thing around her, except for the people that lived upon the space station.
The strange twisted feeling from the Force was still present and Ellana was trying to figure out exactly where it came from and what was causing it, but that was easier said than done. They were thousands of myriads of feelings upon the station itself and trying to figure out one was like trying to find a needle in a haystack. She knew that the Montilyet family was in danger that was she could sense. It could be from the assassin Mr. Montilyet told them about, and Ellana will do her best to protect them after all she was a Jedi.
That was what Jedi do.
She then felt one of the sisters approaching her. From what she could sense, this must be the younger one. She was approaching toward her. She can feel her curiosity and amazement being directed in her direction.
"Is there something you needed?" she asked.
Yvette let out a startled yelp as she jumped away from her. Ellana opened her eyes, staring at the girl across her. She had a light smile upon her lips as Yvette looked at her, completely surprised.
"I thought you were asleep," she said, "You've been sitting there for a while."
"Not asleep," Ellana told her gently, "Meditating."
Yvette looked at her, her emotions all written upon her features.
"Are you really a Jedi?" she asked.
Ellana nodded.
"That's so cool," Yvette started a wide grin upon her face, "I have heard about Jedi before, but I haven't really met one before. I mean…we've all heard stories about your Order but I never really see one. Hey do you have a laser sword like they said in the stories?"
"They're called lightsabers," she gently corrected, "But every Jedi has one."
Yvette frowned.
"Aren't you a bit young to be using one?" she asked.
"I have trained to use one," Ellana answered her with a small nod, "It's a fundamental skill that all Jedi have…where is your sister?"
"Oh…she went back to her room," Yvette said, "Getting ready actually."
Ellana blinked.
"Getting ready?" she repeated.
Yvette nodded, "Since this is our last week on the Citadel, we wanted to go and get some souvenirs for Mother."
Ellana blinked. Since the girl didn't know about the assassins, it would seems that this would be a risk, and the Force despite being calm, still whisper of danger to her, of the danger that still follow the Montilyet family. She stood up from her seat, nodding.
"Then I shall go with you," she said.
Yvette grinned, seemingly happy at her decision. At that moment, Josephine arrived within the room. She was dressed differently than before, her clothing simple and yet there was this elegance to it that caused Ellana to tilt her head lightly at the older girl. Josephine was beautiful she noticed, not yet an adult and yet still managed to bring a gravitas to the room.
"Yvette, are you ready to go?" she asked.
"Yes Josie," she laughed, "I've got our Jedi to join us."
Josephine looked at her, a surprise in her gaze but she nodded.
"Alright," she said simply.
Ellana had a feeling that Josephine didn't really know what to do with her. Maybe she didn't match what a Jedi was to the older girl. Shrugging lightly, she followed Yvette out of the room and the three of them were in no time walking out of the building with one of the guards presents. He called himself Miguel and the one called Antonio had gone with their father to the Embassy to speak with the Council on whatever business they were here for. Turns out he was the one who usually protect the girls whenever they've gone out.
"Have you ever gone shopping before?" Yvette asked her.
Ellana shook her head.
"No," she said, "There wasn't much need of it. The Order had provided me with everything that I need."
"Well, this will be a novel experience for you," Yvette laughed, bringing an arm around her shoulder, "I have gone shopping for jewelry, dolls and even make-up…thought along with a few lip-glosses. The Asari have mastered the arts considering their entire race of women."
"They're mono gendered Yvette," Josephine interjected, her tone exasperated with her sister, "C'mon, we'll take a skycar and it will lead us to the Citadel markets."
They used an Avina, the Citadel V.I., to signal one of the said skycar and after they all seated inside, they all flew up toward the direction of the Citadel market, joining the endless traffic that danced across the station for a few moments. From her seat by the window, Ellana caught sight of many buildings going around her as she was seated beside Yvette, while Josephine and Miguel took a seat at the front.
"The usual place, right?" Miguel spoke out.
"Sure," Josephine answered.
The skycar came to land at the end of a road which was filled with many buildings and many peoples going on about their lives. Ellana could see many products on sale from the many vendors that she caught sight of. She had never seen a place like this before and she couldn't help but feel amazed at it. She followed both Yvette and Josephine who were already discussing about how many stores they'll visit for the day, and she understood that this was not the first time the two girls had come on this part of the Citadel. She glanced around herself for a few moments, taking the sight around herself as her two charges were already browsing at a window which had displayed many clothing to drawn in costumers.
Chancing a glance at Miguel, she noticed that the man was observing the crowd around them. He seemed completely relaxed but Ellana could feel his alertness to the situation that he was in. Ellana turned her gaze toward Josephine and Yvette both of them smiling at a piece of clothing they were holding, the joy in their gaze as they spoke to the Asari seller who was managing the store. Probably found a gift for their mother…
A sudden dark wave of the Force slammed upon Ellana, causing her to stumble lightly in her steps. There was malice within that wave, a thirst of blood and determination to kill, so potent that it took her by surprise. The dark disturbance caused to scan the crowd in front of the store, her eyes suddenly sharpened by the Force and her hand instantly going for the hilt at her waist, the movement hidden by the cloak she wore upon her form. She quickly turned her gaze toward Miguel who was still by where he stood, still scanning the crowd probably haven't noticed anything wrong yet.
The Force screamed within her…and Ellana moved, instantly drawing her lightsaber, the silver blade humming with power as she came to stand right in front of the entrance of the shop where Yvette and Josephine were standing discussing with the Asari seller, as a blaster shot reached the exact same spot and with a wave of her blade, the shot was deflected into the floor in front of her.
Screams and panic echoed across her as another shot rang through but she was prepared now, blocking the attack, rebounding it back to where it came from. Following it with her gaze, Ellana caught sight of the open window in the distance as her eyes found the shooter's location.
There you are.
"Miguel, protect them," she said turning toward the man, "And make a call to C-Sec. I'm going after the shooter."
She barely heard the man's answer before she used the Force and jumped upward toward the top of the Citadel markets building and then with a dash, she was running forward aiming straight toward the direction she had felt the dark wave of the Force. She could feel that it was were it came from, that building. It was no wonder she couldn't find it within the crowd. It was never there in the first place.
Ellana reached the building instantly going toward the stairs that were on the outside, moving quickly to reach the top where the shooter was situated, and she heard the hum of a skycar starting from the top of the building and when she was near enough, Ellana jumped using the Force to push her higher than anyone could ever go, before going a shoulder roll land upon the top of the building.
Her eyes found the skycar there, a blue one as the man at the seat of it instantly turned toward her, having noticed her presence. Ellana ignited her blade once more as the man at the seat aimed a pistol at her, and started blasting as the sky car started taking flight.
Ellana was ready as she was already deflecting any shots coming her way, thought she sent some back toward the shooter as the shot hit the car in some part of it but none to actually do any real damage. The skycar was already too far for her to do anything to it, when the shots stopped, she watched it go lowering her lightsaber and extinguishing it.
An attack against the daughters...
