Chapter Fourteen

Family Matters

"You chased down the suspect…but he still managed to get away?"

Ellana had both of her arms hidden underneath her traveling robe as she looked up at the two Citadel Security officers. It was only a few minutes ago that this place was filled with people and shoppers but with the shoot-out that had happened, most of the place was cleared out as C-Sec shuttles were flying about keeping the area secure and keeping the people that were still present calm.

The two C-Sec officers that were with her were working upon their Omni-Tool as they were asking her questions on what had happened. They were being professional about it of course, thought Ellana could feel that they were less than enthusiastic about working with her.

"He was in a skycar by the time I reached him," she answered, "It was marked by blaster shots."

"We already have people looking for it," the Asari officer said looking at her with a light frown, "You didn't get a good look at the suspect?"

Ellana glanced at her.

"It was a man that much I could tell," she said, "But I didn't get a good look at his face."

The Asari nodded at her before glancing at her Turian partner.

"Well, we've got everything we need here," she said, "You can go Jedi."

Ellana gave them a light nod of her head before turning away and walking off. She can hear them talking between themselves. She approached the location where Miguel was standing with the two Montilyet girls and Yvette looked at her as she approached.

"Hey, are you okay?" she asked.

"They just wanted an eyewitness report," she answered her, "Since I was the only one who saw the person who tried to kill you."

"Let's get out of here then," Miguel answered, "I've already contacted your Master and the others. They'll be waiting for us when we return."

The group climbed into a skycar together.

"I think dad won't be allowing us to leave the hotel anytime soon," Yvette said after a while.

She seems to be less excited than she was earlier today and Ellana looked at her, with a light frown upon her face. It made her wish she had captured the man who had tried to assassinate them, and maybe they'll have a lead on why the House of Repose wanted to kill them…thought something about the entire thing felt slightly off to her.

When they've reached the hotel, Mr. Montilyet was already there waiting for them along with Solana Amell. Her Master glanced at her with a small look of concern but Ellana simply shook her head, not wanting to discuss anything right now. When he had seen his daughters, the man quickly approached toward them and taking both of the girls into his arms, hugging them close.

"Are you both alright?" he asked, fussing over both of them.

"We're fine dad," Josephine answered with a grin, "We didn't get hurt at all."

"The Jedi managed to intervene before things get too out of hand," Miguel answered, a light shame in his tone, "I didn't even notice…not until it was already too late."

"Then I thank you Padawan Ellana," the man said looking at her.

Ellana simply smiled at him.

"It's fine," she answered.

"Well, after such a day, we are going to have to travel to Antiva sooner than expected," he said, looking at Amell, "You will be accompanying us yes?"

"We will," Master Amell answered with a small smile, "It is our duty to protect you until this matter is resolved my Lord. However, I have a need to speak to my Padawan about today's events."

"Of course, of course," the man said waving his approval and walking off with his two children.

Ellana stayed standing as her Master approached her and placing a hand upon her shoulder.

"You've done well protecting the girls," she said.

"I didn't expect them to be attacked like such," Ellana answered, "I thought that the House of Repose was targeting the father."

"So, I believe," her Master answered with a light frown upon her features, "If their reputation is to be believed, this wasn't a move I expect from them."

Ellana glanced up at her Master.

"What do you mean?" she asked.

Master Amell stayed silent for a moment, seemingly thinking.

"I think there is more going on than we are aware of my Padawan," she answered her, "I want you to keep close to the daughters. If the House of Repose is targeting them, then they are as in much danger as their father."

Ellana nodded.

"Yes, Master."

"Why don't you go?" she asked, "There is still something that I need to do, but I'll be back soon."

Ellana looked at her, feeling a light confusion rising within her.

"Is everything okay Master?" she asked.

"Just need to return to the Jedi Temple for something," she answered, "I will return shortly."

Ellana nodded. Despite she was still curious about what was going on with her Master, she trusted her, after all, the woman was familiar since she was a kid and she was grateful that they have been drawn together as the Force willed it.

She gave her master a light bow, before turning away and walking back at the direction of the apartment where the Montilyet are staying in.

Solana Amell knew something was off ever since the moment they've received the news of the attack on the two girls. She had been standing a few feet away from the meeting that had been going on with the Asari Counselor and Lord Montilyet, as they were finalizing the prints of the deal they needed when a C-Sec officer had entered the room, bringing them the news of the attack upon the Lord's daughters.

The man had turned a chalky shade of white at the news and had instantly rushed toward the apartment where they had met up with the girls and her former padawan. The C-sec officer had told them that the attack was thwarted by a Jedi who had been present and Solana knew it was her Padawan's actions that saved the day…thought the attack upon the girls instead of the Montilyet patriarch raised red flags.

If it had been any lowly gangs that had been after the attack, it wouldn't have been as serious as she made it out to be, but the House of Repose was not a place that made mistakes. If the rumors she had heard about them were true, then, there is definitely more going on than Lord Montilyet had been saying.

She made her way out of the skycar she had taken, and was now walking up toward the Temple that was in front of her. She gave nod of acknowledgment to the Jedi she recognized but quickly made her way up toward the communication room. It wasn't long before she reached a console in front of her and started pressing the code that she needed to contact the person she thinks might have some insight into the Assassin's world.

It didn't take long before a hologram materialized in front of her. An Elvhen man now stood in front of her. Despite the blue glow of the holo in front of her, she knew his skin was darker than most as his hair, long and pulled back from his forehead as his eyes found her own.

"Well, this is a surprise," the man said, a light accent within his tone, "I didn't expect you to call me Bonita. How long as it been since we last seen each other?"

Despite herself, Solana couldn't help the light smile that grew upon her lips.

"Hello Zevran," she said, "I'd say it been a few years, give or take."

"Indeed, it has," the Elf, Zevran answered her with a light grin, "But I have a feeling you didn't call me just because you wanted to relive the old days. Now then, my beautiful Jedi, do you require the service of the Black Shadow?"

Solana shook her head, feeling slightly exasperated. Zevran didn't change at all despite how long since they've seen each other.

"No," she said, "However, I do need information you have about the House of Repose."

Zevran's eyes widened a bit at the name.

"Well, what have you gotten yourself involved with now my dear?" he asked, shaking his head lightly, "the House of Repose is not something that many even know about…Orlaisians do love to use them in their Great Game of knives and politeness."

Solana crossed her arms.

"Then, do they target something other the contract they have been given?" she asked.

Zevran chuckled.

"The House of Repose is more old-fashioned than the Crows ever was," he said looking at her, "their contract is the only thing that matter to them. Now are you going to tell me why you're asking about them?"

"A client I am protecting is being targeted by them," she said, "his daughter was just attacked earlier today and I have a feeling that the House was behind it."

"I don't think so," Zevran said, "If your client is the target, then he will only be the one getting attacked. They don't really target other members of the family, as far as I know…unless they went through a major change recently, but even that I would be aware of. Your client is either lying to you about something or he isn't the target."

Solana sighed to herself.

"I was afraid of that," she said, "Then it would seem that I will have to talk to my client again. Thank you for the info Zevran, you've been a great help."

"You do know that the House will never stop sending their assassins after your client correct?" the man told her, "I don't mean to frighten you my dear, but if you are intending to protect that client then you will be there for a long time. Unless you get rid of the original contract…something I know that you'll never do, after all, Jedi are paragon of honor and peace."

Solana glanced at him.

"And how do you propose I do that?" she asked, "I hardly know where the House of Repose is and even if I could find it…I wouldn't know where…"

She trailed off, noticing the look on Zevran's face. Then, she understood what he was asking her without even saying anything.

"Zevran, I can't ask you to…,"

"You're not asking…I'm offering," he said, "You are in over your head with this Amell. This is not going to be like the Architect on Ferelden. While it was terrifying on it's own right, that battle was something Jedi are trained to fight. This, however, isn't that battle. Against an assassin, you sent another assassin…or a rogue, if you're feeling generous."

Solana frowned to herself. She knew that Zevran was right in a way. The battle against the Architect ten years ago wasn't like this mission at all. Back then, she didn't have a Padawan with her and if the assassins are going to keep on coming, it won't be long before either her or Ellana made a mistake that leads to someone's death.

And she didn't want her Padawan's first mission to be something like that.

She sighed again.

"I will be on Antiva in a few days," she said, "Can you get there on time?"

Zevran smiled.

"We will be waiting for you."

Solana blinked.

"We?"

Zevran only gave her that sly grin of his before disconnecting. Solana shook her head a bit at the man before a light smile appeared upon her lips. Despite the circumstances, it was nice to talk to her old friend after so long.

Thought what Zevran had revealed to her was concerning. Lord Montilyet was lying about who the target was and given the attack that happened today, she finds herself believing that instead of him being the target it was one of his daughters and she doubted that Yvette was old enough to be pursuing the family business.

Night had fallen a while ago for Ellana as she stood in front of the glass looking out toward the passing skycars in the distance. She didn't have her cloak on, staying only in her tunics as she observed the distance in front of her. The others guards were patrolling the hallways where they were staying in. She knew that they will be travelling back to the Montilyet's home planet of Antiva.

Hearing a sound, brought Ellana back to herself as she focused on what was around her. She then followed after where the sound came from finding Josephine seating at a table with a small cup in her hand. The young woman seems to be lost in thoughts as she didn't even notice her arrival.

"Josephine?" Ellana called out, tentatively.

The young woman looks up at her.

"Evening," she answered with a light smile, "I thought I was the only one still awake."

Ellana only smiled shrugged lightly.

"Is everything okay?" she asked.

Josephine seems to deflate lightly.

"I was just thinking about today…," she said, "If you weren't there…I could have lost my sister before we even knew what was going on. I…I just don't know how to deal with that."

Ellana took a seat upon one of the chairs in the room, looking at the older girl with a light frown.

"I'm sorry this has happened," she said.

Josephine looked at her, a sad smile upon her lips. The girl had something weighting upon her shoulders and her mind, Ellana sense, and it doesn't seem to have to do with the attack itself.

"But it's not your fault," she said a light smile upon her lips, a sad smile, "Did you know that my family used to be in the trading business?"

Ellana tilted her head lightly.

"Your father mentioned it," she told the older girl.

A smile appeared upon Josephine's lips at that.

"It's a point of pride on Antiva," she said, "Most noble families there are. With an entire galaxy, it is easy to get business flowing with trade. Yet, despite our advancement, the Montilyet name is looked down upon, ridiculed because of something we aren't even responsible for."

She looked down at her drink.

"As the next head of the family," she said, "When I found those old records of our trades, I thought to myself maybe…I could bring some honor to our name, to erase the stain that is still there despite it being so long ago… I wanted to help bring my family back to what it was."

Ellana feel herself still at that, realizing what Josephine was saying. Something must have shown in her eyes for the older girl looked away tears falling from her eyes.

"Why didn't you trust us with this information before?" she asked.

"It was a family matter," Josephine said softly, "At least…that's what father said but I don't want my sister to die because of my mistake. She almost died today…how can I still be okay?"

Ellana stood up from where she was seating and came to stand in front of Josephine. The older girl looked at her and she took her hand within her owns. She can feel the raw guilt and self-hate that Josephine was feeling in that moment. Feeling that she was struggling with because of what she had done had brought danger to her family.

"You made a mistake," Ellana said simply, "A terrible mistake but from what I know, mistakes can be rectified."

"How?" Josephine asked.

"First," Ellana said, "Be honest with us. Your father asked the Jedi for help, and we will help but we can't if we don't know all the details. My Master and I will do whatever we can to keep you and your family safe Josephine, but for that to happen, you have to work with us."

The young woman looked at her for a long while before she gave a small nod.
