Chapter 1

October 31st, 1991

A sharp crack disturbed the otherwise peaceful night surrounding Bobby Singer's scrap yard. A woman, clad in dark cloaks and clutching a small bundle to her chest, raced up the front steps and banged desperately on the front door. Approaching footsteps were all the warning she was given before the barrel of a shotgun was shoved in her face. A tense moment passed before the gun was slowly lowered, and frown bloomed across the gun toter's face.

"Amanda? The hell are you doing here at this hour?" Bobby grumbled, running a hand over his sleep tussled hair, and taking in her tense form. She brushed her blonde braid over her shoulder, rocking the wakening child in her arms.

"I can't really explain right now Bobby, there isn't time. I just, I don't know where John is and Severus…well I can't trust him right now." She rushed out. "I need you to watch Eliza, just until I know things are safe, or, God, just safer…"

"What are you talking about girly? Did your husband do something dumb again, put you all in danger? I swear that boy is fixing to get himself kil-" He muttered, cutting himself off as the bright grey eyes of his surrogate niece popped open, and her little arms waved towards him, wanting to be held. Amanda shifted her into his arms, and Eliza let out a happy squeal before laying her head on the gruff man's chest and settling down.

"Please Bobby. Just watch her for a few days. I brought a bag with enough food and clothing for at least a week, and some of her favorite books and toys, so you won't have to even go to the food store or buy anything." She pulled a tiny bag out of her cloak at his reluctant nod, enlarging it with a silent spell. She placed it at his feet, reaching up to her child to press kiss her head.

"Mommy loves you baby. I'll see you soon." She backed away, nodding at Bobby with a watery smile. "Thanks Bobby. I'll bring chocolate from Remus' stash for you when I come back for her."

"You better girly. Stay safe out there." Bobby said, shifting the two year old slightly. Amanda Winchester smiled back at him.

"Where's the fun in that?" And with a wave of her wand, she was gone.

It would be nearly three days later when Bobby Singer found out what had happened. Learned that Lily and James Potter had been killed by Voldemort, leaving their son Harry an orphan, that Amanda had been killed by her husband in cold blood alongside Peter Pettigrew, that Sirius Black had been arrested and incarcerated for his crimes only moments later, also leaving Eliza parentless. All this information had come from a rather frantic Remus Lupin who had spent the last three days looking for Eliza. When he had set his amber eyes on her tiny form, playing with blocks on the carpeted living room, the utter panic that had keep him running for the past few days seeped out and he collapsed into an armchair only a few feet away from the girl. Bobby had brought him a drink, and after he had explained what had happened to the girl they had both seen as a sister, he brought him another. The werewolf stayed with Bobby for a week before insisting that he had to get back to England. Before he left, Bobby made him promise to be an active part of Eliza's life since, "with John Winchester as her kin, she'll need all the help she can get, 'specially from her godfather, werewolf or not." That had brought a tear to the younger man's eye, and with a nod, he too was gone.

Two weeks later, John Winchester arrived on his doorstep, concerned because he hadn't received a letter from his younger half-sister in nearly a month. His two boys, Sam and Dean, who were 8 and 12 respectively, rushed in once they saw their baby cousin sitting on the couch where Bobby had been reading to her. A quick explanation of what had happened was given, and within minutes John was picking up the youngest Winchester to hug her tightly.

He would spent the next day explaining to his boys, particularly Sam who had just learned of the supernatural, how Aunt Amanda died, how she was a witch, but not an evil one, and how Eliza was likely one as well. He tasked them with nearly the exact same thing he tasked Dean with almost eight years earlier, "look out for your cousin".

It took all of three minutes for Dean to stop looking at Eliza suspiciously for being a potential witch, Sam even less time than that.

A month later, Professor Dumbledore had shown up on his porch, with his sad grandfatherly blue eyes and a devastated Severus Snape behind him. It took hours before John would lower the shotgun he had pointed at the man, and nearly two weeks before he would even let the man see their shared niece.

Confronted with the man who had aided indirectly to the death of her mother, his half-sister, Eliza had cheered, gotten up on unsteady legs and stumbled into the dark haired man's arms. Held there, by his pale and shaking hands she asked a question that had been repeated many times since she had first been left at Bobby's. "Where's mommy?"

Drawing back sharply at the question, Severus looked to the two men also charged with caring for this girl, the last piece of their sister left, for help. Finding none in their pain filled eyes, he cleared his throat, turning back to Eliza. Her grey eyes, so much like her father, his tormentor, shined back at him, full of childhood innocence that he was determined to protect.

"She is in heaven." Her head tilted, not understanding. "She's gone, but she didn't want to leave you. She loved you very much."

"Oh." She whispered, something connecting in her little head. "She's like Auntie Mary?"

Shooting a glance at John who had tensed at the name of his dead wife, Severus sighed gently. "Yes. Like Auntie Mary."

"Do you think," she started, her eyes now filling with tears. "do you think they're together now, mommy and Auntie Mary? I don't want her to be lonely."

"Yeah." John croaked out behind Severus, coming to kneel beside him and run a hand over Eliza's blonde curls. "They're together now, watching over you and Sam and Dean. They'll keep you safe. Ok?"

She nodded, tears dribbling down her cheeks. "Ok." And she launched herself back into Severus' arms, letting out a wave of sobs as the full impact of what it meant to no longer have a mother came crashing down on her.

Later, when she had cried herself to sleep, Severus slipped a necklace onto the table by her cot, along with a note. The note explained what he couldn't, that the gold necklace had belonged to her mother, that it was her most prized possession, and that the charm, given to her as a child, would protect Eliza as it had her. The symbol on the charm, a strange zig zagging mark, was not explained, nor would it be for many years to come. And as Eliza Winchester-Black slept on, she had no way of knowing the impact that she would come to have on the world she loved.
