Chapter one: What happened.
While Making The Potion to hopefully help her mom, Mildred found the last ingredient being snatched out of her hands. "Mum, Give me that back, Please" She Begged, eyes full of worry and dread. Her mothers face already showed parts of stone.
"Why? So you can take away my magic?" Her mother all but hissed at her. In all these years together, Mildred had never seen so much hatred in her mom. Power driven her almost past the point of recognition.
"That is not what I'm trying to do!" Mildred pleaded. "I'm trying to stop you from being turned to stone!" Hopefully, Julie had noticed the phantom mask on her. Hopefully she'd see that it was all to help her.
Only.. "Lies now is it?" was her whispered response. "I'm so disappointed in you, Mildred" At any other point, hearing her say that would have made Mildred sad for completely different reasons. Today, It made her sad because that was not who her mother was. Or who she should be. "You know.. I think some time in that sculpture might do you good"
"No…" Mildred whispered in disbelief, wondering if she'd really do it. Or it was another one of her motherly threats. Like 'It'll be bed without tea!' but then she brings you some food anyway. But to Mildred's Dismay, Julie Raises her hand ready to strike. "N-No! No!" She yells out as she jumps out the way, her door being hit instead of herself. "You're not thinking straight mum! You're not You!" Another attempt at reasoning. "Look Mum!" She yelled her potion at where the door once was. "Look! Us.. Before this all began!"
As the Images played, Julie lifted her hand to her face, for a moment, Mildred hoped it was because she was remembering.. And the stone was fading. That is until her mother turned to look at her once more, half her face being covered in stone.
"You're trying to trick me.." Julie muttered, Face like Thunder. Her hand raises, ready to strike. Before the area, where the door was meant to be, opened up. Revealing a more than Angry looking Miss Hardbroom, and Miss Cackle. "For this Attack, Throw her Back!" They yelled out in Sync. Julie went flying, through the wall, and down to the courtyard.
Mildred and the teachers ran up to the person sized whole in the wall. If it was anyone other than her mum, Mildred would have laughed at the situation. But instead she stared helplessly down at the ground where her mother had landed. For a moment, she wondered i she had died. That is until, like a zombie, Julie stranded from the ground. Her head shot up.
Allowing Drill and Miss Bat, On the ground, to throw her back further. The Two teachers moving forward to close in on her. From behind, Mr Rowan-Webb appeared. Startling Julie..
"You may have won the fight! But the battle is far from over!" She yelled out, her head turning, to stare at Mildred. "I'll be back.." In a flash of smoke, She disappeared. Leaving the reaches to look around, as if she was going to pounce. But as it appeared, Julie Hubble was long gone.
Mildred felt the tears sting at her eyes.. Her mother had left her. And it had been her fault. Up until now, despite it being her choice, she had blamed it on the magic and it's allure. But there was no question now. Mildred was the problem.
A gentle hand rested on her shoulder, while talking could be heard next to her. She couldn't quite make out what was being said. As if her head was being held under. In more ways than just her hearing. She felt as if she was drowning. The world leaves her, as she stared in one space, the space her mother once stood down below.. All while she felt as if she couldn't breathe. But at the same time, there was nothing she could do to bring herself afloat.
The Hand left her shoulder, And a voice called her name from beside her. It took Mildred a moment to realise that is what was happening. The sweet voice of her headmistress calling her. Slowly, Her head turned to look at Miss Cackle.
Miss Cackle.. Who had been there from day one. Who Had helped her the whole way. Who Had warned her against this. No, Forbidden it. Now stood, sorry faced, hands held in front of her, And completely right. Infuriatingly so.
Mildred was expecting the lecture.. The Telling off.. The Expulsion. What she wasn't expecting was Ada to slowly shake her head, open her arms and say "Come here"
Mildred didn't even realise she was moving till she was wrapped in the pink cardigan of Miss Cackle. She did however realise that she was crying. No.. Not just crying. She was weeping, Wheezing, Wailing. All the W's really.
For Mildred, it felt as if hours had passed, in reality however, it had only been five minutes. Miss Cackle patted Mildred's back, as if a signal to a dog. The Young girl pulled back, now realising they were in her office. And not alone, as HB stood unusually quiet. Her deep frown, looking more sad than displeased.
"Has it been sorted, Miss Hardbroom?" Ada asked, finally addressing the sullen witch. Mildred realised something as her head spoke. She'd make a wonderful grandmother. With all her cardigans, Soft spoken words and warm hugs. Just to name a few.
Perhaps that shouldn't have been what first came to Mildred's Mind. Perhaps it should have been 'what's been sorted?'. Is this when all the yelling, and expelling came in?
"Indeed." Miss Hardbroom drawled out, in her usual manner. But.. It lacked that crisp bite her words normally have. If Mildred didn't know any better.. She'd mistaken it for softness.
The Should be Grandma looked to Mildred and said. "Tomorrow. We will have a talk. For tonight however, You will be staying with Miss Hardbroom. I do hope that wont be an issue." She brought her hand up to hold onto Mildred's arm.
The Mildred in Question, looked towards HB. Who was conveniently looking out the window. Mildred was too tired to ask questions, or to argue.. Or to do anything really. So, She nodded. And then followed on.
She'd never had to go towards staff Quarters before. In fact.. Now it made her wonder what to expect. What was worse, Was Miss Hardbrooms surprisingly chill attitude. She thought for sure when all was said and done she'd snap.
'You wretched girl!' Was what she was expecting. 'You should never have been here' also would have done it. But.. This felt like a Silent treatment. And that was far scarier than whatever nasty comment HB could make.
Soon, the pair came to a stop, and Miss Hardbroom muttered something under her breath. Mildred was too tired to even try and listen in. But, whatever was said, seemed to have been the key to opening up the door. Leading them into a rather spacious room.
Mildred couldn't help but take in the lay out. Three Straight walls. One where the entrance door stood, to its right, A Small Kitchen area, Mainly with sink, Cups, A Kettle. So.. Less Kitchen. More Tea making areas.
On the other side sat a tall bookcase. Filled with Study books, fiction books, and none-fiction books alike.
One Wall held a Fireplace. While the other sat a large Red Sofa with Gold Accents, A Matching Chair, That Mildred could completely imagine HB sitting at like a Queen, and reading her books. And to top it all off, The coffee table, complete with chess set on top.
Once she was done marvelling at that area, she looked to the other side of the room. Where Hardboom now stood. The wall is not straight.. No.. It made a semi-circle. With three Doors on it. One was dead centre, the other two a little off from it.
Mildred should have expected no less from the Cackles.. Than odd shaped rooms.
Miss Hardbroom pointed to the middle door, and for the first time since they left Miss Cackles office, spoke. "The Bathroom." She then moved to its right, and opened the door. "The Guest Room.. And Your home for the.. Time being, Mildred…" She trailed off, in a way Mildred just knew she was going to mention her last name, but stopped herself. Most likely as to not add salt to the wound.
HB stood to the side, to allow the student entry. The Room was nothing special. A Bed, a bit bigger than her own. A Chest of draws. A human sized mirror, a small book shelf with only a few books on it, and a chair nearby. But, the item that stood out to Mildred, was the Cat bed, paired with Tabby on top. It was then she noticed that by them both, was a small trunk. Most likely with things of hers in it.
Without a second though, she leaped forward to take a hold of the tabby and hold him tight. Briefly turning to Miss HB and saying "Thank you.." She realised then. That was the first time -SHE- Had spoken since her mothers departure.
Miss Hecate Hardbroom looked surprised for a moment before simply nodding. "For.. Tonight." She started. "Keep the door open." Before she moved, pulling the door too, but not quite closing it.
Mildred expected that it was so HB could keep a better eye on her. Make sure she doesn't do anything stupid. Not tonight.. Anyway. One mess up a day.
Mildred kicked off her boots and lay down on top of the bed sheets with tabby. Crying softly into his fur as the memories, Thoughts and implications of the day came crashing back to her. Before long, she had cried herself to sleep. The only thing she would register until she next woke, was the soft Blanket being thrown over her, Before sleep really did take its hold.
