Chapter Seven: Missing Mildred - Part One
Mildred ran to join her friends at the table. This time accompanied by Felicity, but only because she just had to write about Mildred's Mum. Mildred answered in sharp, short answers. Not wanting to give the girl quite what she wanted.
Felicity went on and on about how everyone wanted to know what was going on in Mildreds head, Why her mom had been like this. Had there been any signs beforehand? Who else knew about her magic. And how long were they planning on keeping it a secret.
She was also wondering what Millie was going to do now her room had a hole in it. She'd kept quiet about Miss Hardbroom and the spare room. She'd already been missing from all her lessons. Last thing she wanted people to think was that she was on house arrest.
She might be soon, but she wasn't just yet. Never mind the questions she would get about HB and her living area. It was bad enough she felt like she was intruding. She didn't need to gossip about it as well.
She was so grateful when dinner had ended and they had all been let go for the evening. "Want to come hang out in my room, Mille?" Maud asked as they started to walk out the hall.
"Oh..I em.. I can't." Mildred started, suddenly remembering something. "Miss Hardbroom wants to keep an eye on me, so i'll be in detention"
"Detention?!" The Two girls cried out together. "That's Harsh, even for HB" Enid grumbled.
It would be rather harsh, yet.. Perfectly on point for HB. At least it would be if it was true. Mildred didn't want someone breathing down her neck again. She felt like she was just getting passed from person to person.
'I'm done with this one bothering me, your turn'
And it was all because they felt sorry for her. Her Mum had abandoned her. After trying to turn her into Clay and take over the school. People we're glossing over the fact that it was Mildred's fault after all.
Mildred shugged to her friends and started to walk off in the directions of potions, before getting anywhere close she walked out into the open air of the school grounds. She just needed to clear her head a bit. Just a little bit. That's all that's needed. She was sure.
She found herself walking down towards the forest, The same forest where Indigo moon stood. It was foolish of her, even though she knew. Although it was on school grounds, that didn't mean she should be wandering around it on her own.
She tried not to focus on that, instead focusing on the sound of her feet against the floor, the leaves and twigs giving way to her. The Sounds of birds tweeting and chatting above her. The Wind moving the trees around in an elegant dance.
Being out in this open forest should have made her feel Free, capable of anything. Yet, the closer she got to Indigo, the smaller and more fragile she felt. Perhaps that feeling was a warning, 'don't do it, Millie', 'it's a bad idea, Mildred', 'turn back, hubble'.
But she wasn't listening to that nagging voice in the back of her head. If she wanted nagging, she would have stayed inside the castle. Mildred wanted some control over this whole thing. This situation. The Problem, if you will.
The problem was far deeper than Julie Hubble. It was with the whole Trouble Hubbles. Mainly Mildred. She should never off become a witch, Miss Hardbroom was right. She didn't belong here.
Mildred brought a hand up to her cheek, suddenly realising she had started to cry. The tears silently fell down her cheeks. Was it the feeling of being unwanted here Or the fear of leaving here that had brought on the tears?
It was like a double edged sword. Either way she will be unhappy. As she approached Indigo moon, she couldn't help but question if that's what Miss Hardbroom felt like. It doesn't matter what happens, she'll end up unhappy anway.
Mildred couldn't help but feel odd at how much similarities she shared with Miss Hardbroom. What's the odd of two girls at this school, Both with brown hair, both with brown eyes, both stealing a wishing star, both wishing a non-magical magical, and both causing a lot of trouble for it. She wondered what else they shared in common.
But that wasn't all she wondered. She also wondered if Miss Hardbroom had a point with learning the witch's code back to front. Perhaps the only way Mildred will ever be able to redeem herself, and her family, was to become the best witch that ever lived.
Unfortunately for Mildred.. She didn't know how to get there. What way would be best, What did she need to brush up on. It wasn't enough to just be costing along doing the bare minimum.
When she gets back, she's going to have to ask all her teachers for extra work. Perhaps in time, she'd even be able to figure out a cure for Both her mum and Indigo. They deserve better. And Mildred would make sure that it happens. One way or another.
She came to a halt before indie before crashing to her knees. Feeling the sting on them, but not caring in the slightest. Tears now ran down her face like a tap left on. "I'm sorry.. I'm so sorry.." She choked out. Head hanging down, and her other hands taking hold of the dirt below her in tight fists.
Despite her current crying fit, she couldn't help but feel as if she was being watched. Like someone, or something was looking at her, waiting for her next move. Or maybe.. Just waiting to attack.
Onto part two..
